This is more on the GM for not having their staff prepared for the promotion they were running. They were overwhelmed to the point of just shutting down. I really felt bad for them. Not bad at all. I hadn't ordered a sub from anywhere in a long while. I typically make sandwiches at home. I got a targeted ad telling me that Firehouse had some kind of limited-time Hot Ones* sandwiches. It caught my attention... looked over to my wife and said, "We're going this weekend!" We ordered takeout while we were in this part of town. We also ordered a large and split it. It was plenty big enough. The sandwich - Zesty Garlic Hook & Ladder - Smoked Turkey, Honey Ham, Pepper Jack cheese, Onions marinated in Hot Ones Classic Garlic Fresno Hot Sauce, Tomato, Lettuce, and I added a few other things(cucumbers, etc). I also removed the mayo because ewwww. When we arrived home, we were surprised that the sandwich was cut in half. We thought we'd have a mess cutting it ourselves. We didn't ask them to do that... they just did it so perfect for our sharing a meal time. It has been a toss-up on whether sub places cut the sandwich or not. Sometimes, you have to specify it. The sub was good and hit the spot. The only issue I had with it was the bread. It was good but I think they only have one type of bread and it's soft. I wish they had had a harder bread. Nevertheless, the sandwich was delicious and didn't hit my stomach and want to evacuate hours later like other sub places. I ordered through DoorDash. It ended up being $20 for a small sub, chips, and a drink. Of course DoorDash has their fees, but the food itself was $13. I'd be okay with that if the sandwich wasn't so small. The sandwich was $7.40. It was so tiny and was missing half the ingredients. It was just meat and cheese. We have had other Firehouse Subs at other locations and the subs are warm and the bread is warm and crunchy. We have tried the Hurstbourne location inside and got it to go too. I think the subs should be cooked as the name suggests- "Firehouse" Sub. I could have gotten my sub any sub place. read more

I went back to Firehouse on Hurstbourne and ordered a hot Italian sub, my favorite, that was as good as i remember. It was delicious and plentiful with meat and toppings. I know a lot of people who rave about this place so I decided to try it on my lunch break. Immediately, I was disappointed. The service was poor and my order was completely wrong. They also forgot to give me part of it. The bread on the sandwich was SOPPING wet. It was disgusting. The few parts that were dry were actually very tasty, and that made it all the worse that it ended up being maybe a third of the sandwich that was actually enjoyable. I went in for lunch one day and it was busy. The food was good. However, it took multiple attempts to get ny order correct. It may not have helped that the person taking my order decided to take a phone call while talking to me. He repeatedly asked me if I wanted a drink. I repeated said I did not want a drink. He entered my order with a drink. When I saw the receipt, I asked for it to be corrected. Another employee told me to just take the drink. The point was that I wanted my money back. My order was also late because the people making the sandwiches were confused with how it was entered. I am trying to give them grace because I know places are short on staff and my yelling at them won't make anything better. The people who made my sandwich were apologetic. I really want to love Firehouse Subs, but after two less-than-stellar visits to this location I have to resign myself to the fact that, in a town up to its armpits is sandwich shops, this location suffers too many shortcomings to garner my repeat business. First, I love the concept. A sub house created by firefighters. Menu items with names like the Hook and Ladder and the Firehouse Hero evoke heroics and pay tribute to first responders are the centerpiece of Firehouse Subs. The decor is decidedly FireFighter-esque and tells a story that is, at once, brave and sad. Our first visit was quite a while ago and the service was average. Very, Very average. A part of that could have been because, as I recall, we arrived very shortly after they opened on a Sunday. Having spent many years in the restaurant industry I know how it is when people show up when you first open the doors, but at the same time you need to be ready for it. The first visit was met with a nearly audible "sigh" from behind the counter. In retrospect, it was the pretty indifferent treatment on our first visit that kept us from coming back sooner. Fast forward to our most recent visit. We weren't the first customer in the door and arrived about 11:25 on a Sunday morning to a couple of tables already occupied and when we placed our orders there was one other person who was waiting on a take-out order. Our orders were placed at 11:27. A few more guests came in and placed orders while we got our drinks and sat down to wait for our food. On the drink station the Dr. Pepper ran out while filling my cup. Bill came out to fix it right away, but for some reason the Dr. Pepper button was grayed-out. Don't know why. No explanation was given. Never got Dr. Pepper. After about 10 minutes we started looking at our watches and noticed that orders were piling up and no food was being delivered. At this point we heard someone behind the counter say that the toaster wasn't working. Bill to the rescue (again) and eventually orders started coming out. 17 minutes after we placed our orders our food was delivered. That's more than a bit outside the norm for a sub shop, and I'm sure was well outside of the delivery standard of Firehouse Subs. Food delivery wasn't met with an apology or any kind of acknowledgement that this too WAY longer than it needed. My sandwich was warm - not hot - and my wife's soup was the same way because it was put in the bowl when we ordered it - seventeen minutes ago. Food service delivery aside, I took issue with the way one of the managers talked down to the staff. Down. Condescendingly. As if she was talking to an elementary school student who was expected to know something at a high school level and being disgusted that they didn't pass the test. All she did was snip at her employees and at Bill for the duration of our visit. Having spent years in fast food management I know that you'll get better results out of your employees if you treat them and talk to them with respect. Condescension is not a way to team-build, but it's a helluva way to increase employee turnover. Excessive food delivery times. Soft drinks unavailable after being replaced. A manager who talks down to employees. Not a place I care to frequent, especially since Which Wich (a couple hundred feet away) is, in this reviewer's mind, a better option. read more

This was the first time I have had Firehouse Subs. I had it delivered to my office after ordering online. I ordered a pastrami on white with lettuce, onions, and tomatoes. All food was very fresh and has excellent flavor. Delivery was timely and since I ordered extra pastrami, the sandwich was plentyful. I WILL definately order from Firehouse Subs again. Love the subs here. One of my favorites is the Firehouse Hero. Roast beef, smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham, and melted provolone. I get mine Fully Involved; Loaded complete with mayo, deli mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a kosher dill pickle on the side. Meats are refresh as is the bread and veggies. Definitely stop in for a hot toasted sub. I like eating in the firehouse inspired(dig) dining area. Soda machine is one of the 160 some odd combo fountains. I have been seeing Firehouse Subs popping up in my travels. Today, I knew I was close to one at lunchtime so I went and pulled the trigger. Michael and Donna were very cordial when I told them it was my first visit and suggested several different subs to try, but the Hook and Ladder (turkey, ham, cheese and fixings) was the first I heard mentioned so I went with it, "Fully Involved," PLUS some other free extra's which spiced it up the way I like. They don't nickel and dime you for extra's on the sub. I saw where they steam the meats and warm the bread. NO microwaves. I took it to go and it sat in my car for about an hour before I got home after taking care of some business. The sub was better than I hoped and is now my favorite sub shop. My Hook and Ladder came in a nice sub holder, not just a plastic bag. The pickle was individually wrapped in its own baggie too. This company goes the extra mile when it comes to quality. I wish there was one in Southern Indiana (Jeffersonville). Lastly, I like to say the restaurant has some cool decorations, pictures and painting. Michael and Donna give me the impression they are exemplary employees. I look forward to my future visits and will pass the word to everyone talking about dining out. read more

If I could put a negative 5 stars I would. I was very skeptical on even trying FHS. I heard SOOOO many bad reviews but I'm not one to judge off others opinions. I went to the FHS on hurstbourne, and was so excited to try it. After me and my boyfriend ate our sandwiches we thought it was really good, until we got food poisoning. Never again will I step foot in here. Not so great for a first impression. After reading all the other reviews I could throw up, if my organs weren't exhausted from all the throwing up from food poisoning. The one on outer loop is permanently closed. Unsanitary practices. I walked out of the store and immediately threw out my sandwich after watching the worker make it (keep in mind I also waited 20+ minute for a sub). She went from touching a used rag to running her hand through the entire bucket of pickles & making my sandwich. There's no reason NOT to change gloves between using rag and wiping stuff down & touching food. That's like one of the most basic rules of food service 101: change gloves when switching tasks. I literally could still see the liquid on her gloves when running her hands through the food. When addressed she just said "well the rag is soaked in sanitizer so it's fine" uh... no ma'am I don't want to eat sanitizer either & I can clearly see the dirt marks on the white towel you used. that's just gross. Since I didn't seem to get any help in store when I addressed the issue, I am waiting on management to respond on this incident because I'd prefer to be refunded for the food that I immediately threw in the trash. The owner told me to "come back in for a free sub" - I'm not interested in eating here again. I simply want a refund for the food I paid for and obviously did not eat. Yet the owner has not responded to any of my requests for a refund. Yikes. Do better. read more

I went here today for the first time to take advantage of their offer of a free medium birthday sub. I chose the brisket sub (#10). It was fantastic! Soft, fresh bread, flavorful meat, and just the right amount of cheese and BBQ sauce. Friendly and knowledgeable service as well! Next time (and, yes, there will assuredly be a next time) I'll have to try one of the dozens of help-yourself sauces they have on display. I almost wish they didn't have "subs" in their name. Firehouse is, by all means, a serious contender in the sub restaurant market. Ive had every sub on the menu and there's not a single bad sandwich. Oh, when you say double mean, it means double meat. Don't settle for Subway garb where they give you one extra piece of a cylindrical turkey slice for $2.50, Firehouse means business. The location here is up to par with other Firehouse restaurants, 5 stars because its the nearest store to me and I've kept my fingers crossed other franchisee's will follow and open other locations around Louisville. First off the food is always delicious. The only reason Firehouse gets 4 stars instead of 5 is the drink machine. I love having the options of the Coke Freestyle machine but with a location this busy they either need 2 machines or a traditional fountain. It was very frustrating. I have eaten here many times since I work across the street. The staff is normally friendly and reasonable. If there's been an issue with an order it is corrected without question, and that's only been a time or two. But today I was there with my family and we ordered six sandwiches. My daughter, who ordered right before me, requested an Italian and a salad. She was brought a turkey and ranch with her salad. All of the other sandwiches were as ordered. I pulled my receipt and it showed a turkey for her. At this point I'd expect a "Whoops, not sure what happened there, but we'll get what you ordered right away". I was not rude with the server or disrespectful in any way, but what I got from her is an attempt to get my daughter to eat what they had made, then attitude, then finally she agreed to make what I had paid for. You would think that was the end of it. So she's eating her salad and I'm getting disappointed that it's taking so long for them to make another sandwich, so I go ask. The lady at the counter did not know anything about it - she told us she'd replace the sandwich but didn't tell the sandwich maker, who whipped it up right away. We were one of the few tables of customers in the place at the time and my situation could have been easily resolved, but my server chose pettiness and a combative attitude.
