We had a really good breakfast at The Cafe and I can already tell this is going to be one of those places we'll come back to! The atmosphere is modern industrial with a fun, lively feel. It is on the louder side, so if you're looking for a quiet, intimate breakfast, this probably isn't that kind of place. But for a busy breakfast spot, the energy works. The prices are moderate and felt very reasonable for the atmosphere, portions, and overall experience. I ordered the biscuit and gravy with a side of bacon, and let me just say... these were NOT your average biscuits! I got two huge, fluffy biscuits with little cubes of sausage tucked in between them and everything was covered in pepper gravy. The biscuits were soft and delicious, the sausage added just the right amount of flavor, and the pepper gravy pulled it all together. So good! My husband decided to go big and ordered the breakfast plate with all the fixings PLUS a waffle. Naturally, I had to sample the waffle, and I'm pretty sure I made my decision for my next visit right then and there. That waffle was delicious! It had a subtle vanilla flavor that paired incredibly well with the maple syrup. That vanilla + maple combination was honestly my favorite bite of the meal. The portions are generous, the food is flavorful, and there's enough variety on the menu that everyone should be able to find something they'll enjoy. Between my biscuits and gravy and my husband's breakfast feast, we definitely left happy and full. The Cafe gets a big thumbs-up from us, and I'm already looking forward to going back -- especially for that waffle! read more

The cafe is a beautiful restaurant and space, but my most recent visit was disappointing. Upon getting to the restaurant, the main doors were open to let in freah air which was great! I started off with a diet coke and it fell flat. The menu listed a fountain drink and it was coke served from a soda gun. The carbonation wasn't strong and didn't last past the first few sips. I ordered off the breakfast menu and got the huevos rancheros and a blueberry muffin. The eggs were cooked to order and the potatoes were delicious! The muffin was okay. It was a bit on the dry side and would be skipped next time. My friend got a BLT and wasn't impressed. One piece of bread was soft while the other was hard, almost stale. My latest visit to The Cafe was a lunch order for the BBLT - a BLT with bourbon bacon jam. I requested mine on the side and for me, that was a good decision. A little goes a long way. The bacon was thick and a great portion. The fries are thin and super salty. I'd recommend a different side to go with your sandwich. I noticed a pick two for a salad, soup, or sandwich. It included a drink, which made it a good deal. The menu offers several breakfast and sandwich items, plus bakery, salads, and sides. Plenty of seating and I enjoyed the brightness of the main room with its high ceilings. We had a table of 40+ people. The food came out together and our server hustled with a smile. read more

A group of us went here for an early dinner before going to a ballet. There are a couple rooms. One was a very large open space/hall which was decorated for Christmas. The second room is more of a bar setting and was a warmer setting. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant, so they were only seating in the second room. Our server was good but the food was less than desirable. I ordered the Pan Roasted Chicken which was fine. I ordered Brussel Sprouts and green beans as my 2 sides. The brussel sprouts were a little too greasy for me. Someone else ordered the Hot Brown which was also fine but he said it tasted like it was reheated. A couple people ordered mashed potatoes and said they tasted like instant potatoes. Someone else ordered the Pimento Cheese Chicken Sandwich. The cheese did not look like it was handmade, which is what they claim on the menu. It looked like package cheese and also looked like it had been sitting for a while. Took my daughter out to lunch. I had not been to The Cafe in a few years. It's such a cool spot with beautiful ambiance and artwork. We were shown to our seat and drink orders taken promptly. Everything on the menu sounded so good it was hard to choose. I settled on eggs Benedict with a side of grits. . My daughter had a burger. I had coffee and she had a latte. The coffee was pretty good and she enjoyed her latte. Her burger looked really good and she said it was and ate it all. I enjoyed my eggs Benedict although the Canadian bacon was kind of dry, the eggs and hollandaise sauce were perfect and very flavorful. The star for me were the grits. I asked for cheese with them as I usually do to add flavor but they would been great even without it. They were warm, creamy and full of flavor. Probably some of the best I've ever eaten. The service has gone down farther and the food let's just say I would not pay a third of what I did for what we got. The oatmeal was super dry and not cooked. The breakfast sandwich was on a day old cold biscuit with half cooked bacon. This is two bad trips here in a row. That equals a no return for us. We used to love this place but they have gone down hill and since my last review they have declined even more. So if you are thinking of going here save your money. I have always been to this place for either brunch or lunch but I tried it for dinner for the first time. The dinner theme is Southern comfort food so expect fried green tomatoes fried catfish things like that. Overall I thought the meal was extremely heavy and oily. But I believe that is to be expected for any kind of Southern food. Breakfast and lunch offerings--looked great! We got there, and it was a clean space, moderately busy with an early lunch crowd. We were seated and waited on Crystal ( I think!) promptly. I ordered the Early American sandwich and hubs had the Rubino. My husband w thoroughly enjoyed his while mine --well was ok. The French bread looked like it hadn't been cooked at all. I was stunned a server would even bring something that obviously uncooked to the table. My fries were almost cold and were beginning to shrivel. I was in no mood to complain and send it back. Met a friend for lunch. Parking was quite an issue- you may need to drive around the neighborhood to find a spot. I had the Art Deco (a BLT w avocado). Sandwich was very generously sized. Sadly, I fear The Café has gone WAYYYY downhill in terms of service, pricing, and quality since they moved to the warehouse from their old location. I used to LOVE The Cafè, and I would go at least twice a month. These days, whenever it is suggested to me, I find myself desperately lobbing suggestions at my dining companions, trying to avoid stepping foot inside the restaurant's grim corporate walls. The last time I went, I didn't get any further than ordering a water before the menu and my (rather unpleasant) server ran me out. It's so sad, because I love their chocolate tuxedo cake more than anything else in the world. This place is blandly named and blandly decorated. It's just a big, open, loud space. I know they have music/events, but still. It was packed, as was every other place for Sunday brunch, but at least they could seat us. Service was awful. We could barely flag down our server to get waters, silverware, etc. I thought my shrimp and grits were just OK; most in our party did not care for their food. We met an out of town friend who requested to go to The Cafe. Not sure how his meal was as he didn't say, however, my wife and I ordered breakfast. To be honest we both felt that the bacon could have been a little crispier and the roasted potatoes were overdone. I had ordered a biscuit but instead received toast. Although I finally got my biscuit it was rather cold. Service was polite and I did get a couple of refills of coffee but the kitchen was a bit slow in getting our food out. We stopped here for a 6 PM dinner prior to attending a performance across the street at the concert hall. We had allowed a 2-hour window; however, we were feeling it was not enough time due to the restaurant staff appearing to be spread thin. We ultimately made it in time, but I'm thankful our venue was located across the street. I was able to order a margarita about 20-30 minutes after being seated and am glad I also decided to go ahead and put in an order for a Kentuckian sandwich and bleu cheese Cole slaw -- no cooking involved, just assembly. Wise choice! Our food arrived and the margarita was finally delivered to the table 10 minutes later. We had each requested frozen with salted rim, and both were inaccurate. We opted not to say anything due to time constraints. Venue was moderately loud due to almost capacity crowd. It was punctuated at times with sharp increases in noise when the staff person bussing tables would shove dishes into his bin in what seemed to be one feel swoop. The majority of the patrons would jump to attention each time this happened, and it was more the norm than the exception. We plan to return here in a few weeks when we attend another event in the area, so I am willing to give it another try to see if this is the norm or an anomaly. This was our first time. I was expecting great things since the atmosphere was so cool with the jazz trio playing on the stage. The restrooms were just plain gross! Dirty, pungent and not appetizing at all. Then the food came. I ordered the avocado toast. I had to look for any avocado because there was so little of it and covered up with spinach leaves and diced tomatoes. The toast had to have been sitting for awhile because it was cold and chewy! The poached eggs were so runny, that they looked almost like white snot. The side of sausage patties were soooo dry and soooo spicy (not listed as spicy on the menu). I didn't even finish it. Honestly the whole thing was simply disgusting! Probably one of the worst breakfast meals I've ever eaten and as a result I am now sitting with an upset stomach. We enjoyed the sandwiches and sides that we ordered. The big turn off was the restrooms. My friend used the single restroom and warned me afterward that it smelled terrible in there (and not from someone who had used it before her). And then when I needed the restroom before we left, I decided to use the larger women's restroom in the main part of the dining room when you first come in. As soon as I closed the door to the stall, the smell was overpowering. The only thing I could assume was that it was coming from the drain in the floor and it literally smelled like raw sewage. I could not get out of there fast enough. It may seem a trivial thing, but I have often read that if you want a true indicator of a restaurant, check out the restrooms. This place definitely needs to do something about the smell in their restrooms because it was pretty off putting. read more

I always love The café. Food is fresh, different, and delicious. We arrived on a rainy Tuesday at 11:45. Lots of open seats. I have no complaints about the food. The half-and-half special is a DEAL! I enjoyed the chili and especially the King Charles(tuna melt). My disappointment was with the service. First time customer. Arrived at 12 noon. They stated that it would be an hour wait, so please reserve if possible. Even though there is a lot of seating, they do get a lot of customers. To kill time, we walked around one of the little shops inside the establishment. We were seated at 1pm. The waitress let us know that it was going to be a wait, which it was. We didn't get our food till 2pm. During our waiting time, we was entertained by a 3 man band called the 'Derby City Dandies.' They played with a stand up bass, drums, electric acoustics guitar, and Ukulele. They played a little bit of everything from jazz to bluegrass. We ended up grabbing their business card before leaving. Once we received the food, my order was fine, but the other dishes, the eggs were cold (my friend didn't eat it), and the tator tots were extremely salty (my sis didn't eat it). Also, if you are not familiar, make sure to read the menu when ordering, there were some and/or which we was thinking it came with the order and it didn't. I thought my Belgin waffle came with the fruit and whip but you have to ask for it. If not you will just get the waffle. My friend thought her order came with potatoes and it did not. So just confirm what your order comes with or doesn't so you won't be shocked when you don't get it. My friend had to ask for her orange juice twice (once from the lady that brought our drinks and second time when she reminded the waitress). She finally got her OJ when her order came out. I personally won't be back. I don't mind the wait but when your food comes out cold, especially after patiently waiting, it's just not worth it. Pros: 1. A shuttle picked us up from the public parking. Driver stated that he was available till 2pm. Though it's not a far walk, it was right on time. It was pouring down raining and as soon as he seen us parking, he asked if we wanted to ride. 2. The little shop had a lot of interesting things for shopping while you wait to be seated. They even had a 'Paint You Art Out' section where you can sit and paint on ceramic plates. 3. Place is spacious. 4. Waitress was nice. 5. The band was entertaining. 6. Absolutely fantastic. I really wanted to try benedictine and found out this place served a sandwich with just the stuff. I made a reservation for breakfast and I'm grateful we had a rental car because this place was a little bit of a trek from our hotel in downtown Louisville. No reservation was needed at 9am on a Wednesday as there were only a few tables. This place is huge though! I imagine it is probably quite crowded during brunch times, and deservedly so. The staff were awesome, the server was one of the best servers I've ever had. I ordered my queen anne sandwich with homemade benedictine with sliced cucumbers and lettuce served on walnut wheat bread. This usually comes with bacon but they were able to omit this upon my request. It was definitely unique and not like anything I've had before. The spread is delicious. The cucumber was copious. I didn't hate myself after eating it, there was definitely some nutrition in there. GF ordered "southern grits scramble" with grits, scrambled eggs, bacon, tomatoes, and cheese served with toast.
