It's the old cliché - do not judge a book by it's cover! If you do, you will miss out on this great place as the outside of the place is deceiving. We just moved to Howell and my husband and I were looking for a place for a Saturday night date night dinner. We did a Google search and this place had great reviews so we decided to go there. When we pulled into the parking lot we almost left thinking that this is not the kind of place we had in mind, but since we were already there and were both kind of hangry, we decided to go for it. We are so glad we did! The inside is very nice, quaint, and very well decorated with a high end feel. Our server could have been a little friendlier, and was kind of short with us, but she was very efficient so that is all that really matters in the end. My husband ordered the fish and chips for a meal and the chocolate chip cookie skillet for dessert. I ordered the chicken piccata for dinner and cheesecake for dessert. It was all superb! My husband said it was the best fish and chips he has had! I loved my chicken piccata too. It was succulent! It was served with a side of penne pasta with alfredo sauce which was delicious as well, but maybe not a good pairing since the piccata was already so rich in flavor and it was too much creamy sauce paired together. With that being said, I took my leftovers home and ate every morsel, so it was delicious, but maybe it should be paired with a different side or the pasta side should be a red sauce instead? I went to establishment thinking I would enjoy a small sit down restaurant. However, that was not the case. Our waitress was fantastic, but the food was horrible. I ordered the salmon and the bottom was black. Seems like the chef did not know what he was doing. I complained to the manager, Lisa, who told me I didn't know what good salmon was. I'm no food expert but nobody likes burnt salmon. I wanted to talk to the chef and I saw him storming into the dining room. I believe his name was Brig. He told me if I didn't like the salmon to get the f**k out. My four year old child and 96 year old grandmother sat in shock. I've never been so disrespected in my life! We had Lunch at the Fireside Grill and it was very good. Husband had the Pork Tips and mashed Potatoes. It was excellent! I had the Fireside Salad. The pork was prepared with great care and it showed , tender and flavorful. Potatoes were fresh mashed . Salad was nicely prepared and very fresh. Service was also very good. Firewood has a warm and cozy environment. I am extremely bummed that they took away their delicious pancakes though. Yet, after church on Sunday, my family and I always stop in for brunch. I was trying to find a casual dining destination between Detroit and Lansing, preferably with outdoor seating and cocktails. The Firewood Grill did no disappoint! The drinks were superb, although never quite all the way full for some reason. The patio while not exactly quaint, did provide great distraction as it is right off the highway so the noise was able to drown out my obnoxious drinking companions. The queso dip appetizer was a pleasant surprise because I've never experienced cheezewiz prepared in that fashion. I used the free bread basket delicacies to dip in it so that I could pretend it was fondu. Either way, still delicious. You don't disappoint Firewood Grill! read more

Something has changed at the Firewood Grill. I messaged on Yelp for the owner to contact me before I wrote my review but 48 hrs later no call. So here goes. Took a colleague to lunch on Saturday, Jan 13th and raved that the food was good- what a mistake! I ordered the corned beef sandwich which comes fries. The fries were chards of potato- maybe 3-5 actual full size French fries, plus they were cold. The waitress could see our disappointment and replaced the fries. Better, but they were tasteless. A corned beef sandwich that states it had Swiss cheese, should have REAl Swiss cheese, not American Swiss cheese slices. There was a black hair on my plate and both of our plates were chipped- hope no one had chipped porcelain in their food! All the waitress could say was "we are ordering more plates." If I were the owner or chef, I would be embarrassed- Beware, their standards have really gone down the tubes. read more

First time eating here and it was excellent! We started with the calamari which was extremely tender and had a lovely sauce. We went on to Chicken Piccata and Angel Hair Pasta Shrimp. Both were delicious and the Italian Wedding Soup was yummy. It was obvious that everything was house-made, including the desserts. Very disappointed with the way this restaurant was managed tonight. We do not get the opportunity to have dinner alone often and were looking forward to our night. It was very quiet when we arrived. My husband ordered a 22 ounce beer. Our server gave him the smaller beer and did not offer to make it right. She brought back bread to our table and apologized for not bringing him the larger beer, as ordered. Still, she did not offer to make it right. Somehow she knocked the beer over all over him. It was even on his shoes. We had to move tables due to the beer all over. She said she would bring him another beer. Again, even though he requested a larger one, she brought him the small one. Our food was mediocre at best. We were pretty disappointed. When we received our bill, we were billed for the beer she spilled all over him. They did not even attempt to make this right. When I approached the bartender/manager she said that they brought him a new beer (comped it), by bringing another. I explained that he did not get any of the first beer and we were indeed charged. They did not even offer to make it right. He was covered in beer. His shoes have to be washed in the washer in an attempt to get the beer smell and stains out of them. We were not disappointed with the service because mistakes happen. We were disappointed that there wasn't an attempt to make it right and they charged us for the beer that was all over my husband. Perhaps they have changed since we went there early last spring. I just looked at their menu as posted on the internet and no longer see that awful cut of steak that I had on it. I, too, saw the chef on TV (as another reviewer mentioned) and had high hopes. We went there for dinner on a cold weeknight. There were not many people in the restaurant; more at the bar than at the tables. I didn't want to eat a huge meal, but did want to try the steak. I was not familiar the oddly named cut of steak that they were serving, but was reassured that it would be good by the waitress. I had ordered the steak to be medium rare. I love steak and love to cook. I know what medium rare should look like. The large triangular chunk of meat on my plate was barely browned, completely rare, and cold. hmmm... I sent it back. It tasted odd; perhaps because it was completely raw. She brought it back a second time. I could cut into it and eat some of the perimeter of the steak... that part that was actually warm, but it really tasted foul. Again, the remainder was cold and raw, and got sent back for more time on the grill. I told my husband that the steak tasted odd. I didn't want to make a big deal about it and ruin his meal, but it was really bad. When the waitress returned, she made a snippy comment that the chef had said that "next time I should probably order it well done." Needless to say, I was not impressed with his comment nor his ability to cook a steak. At this point, I decided to give up. I put it into a box and took it home. When we got home, I asked my husband to try it. He gave it a funny look and said that there was "a fine line between aged meat, and rotted". He said that it tasted like the meat had gone bad. It was really a bad and sickening experience. I was reluctant to write it up, as I want to encourage some good restaurants in Howell as well, but I have not yet returned. Once you feel like you have been sickened by a place, its hard to go back. I will probably give them a second chance some time. It seems that other people have had good experiences here. read more

My BFF & I try to get out at least once a month for dinner. As I had seen that the old Mr. D's Restaurant had closed & reopened as the FIREWOOD GRILL, I suggested we try the food. Upon entering, we were pleased with the new decor & the hostess was friendly & quickly seated us. Our waitress was prompt & immediately took our drink order after leaving us the menu. I ordered my usual Skye vodka & tonic which was good. Our waitress brought over a plate w/warm, fresh made rolls. YUMMY !! I ordered the $15.00(6 oz) filet while Bonnie ordered the $ 25.00 (10 oz) rid-eye. We asked that they be rare to med rare. And they were PERFECT. Both steaks were tender, juicy & extremely flavorful. Bonnie had the loaded, baked potato & it was LOADED !!! My mashed potatoes we just like mom made. Of course, our spring salads were fresh, chilled & crispy with just the right amount of dressing. We requested more dinner rolls & got them lickity split. Told you they were yummy. As I said, I was drinking a vodka & tonic & the waitress came around filling water glasses & accidentally added water to my drink. After we all had a good laugh, she promptly returned with another full drink & way to many apologizes. Mistakes happen & I fully understand this. Never a need to get you feathers ruffled over something this trivial. My total bill was a few pennies over $ 20.00. Bonnie's was a bit more as she ordered the strawberry cheesecake to go. It looked delicious but I'm not into many sweets. Will definitely go back with my hubby in the near future as that filet was just to good not to have again. read more

We are from out of town and came to town to shop at the outlet mall. My husband and I ate here today in celebration of my birthday tomorrow. We had never been here, but I have to say we will definitely be back. The experience was all around 5-stars! Our server, Cathy was a sweetheart! She was so friendly and made us feel comfortable right away. We could tell she loves her job. The food was superb! I had the surf and turf. Filet was melt-in-your-mouth delicious and the dessert I chose was tiramisu with raspberry. An all organic dessert,!decadent splurge created by the co-owner. Such a unique flavor!! This is a really nice family owned restaurant where the owner's daughter is the hostess and everyone sincerely hopes you enjoy your meal. The background music was a little bit loud, and not sung by any of the original artists - we thought that was a little funny. The Tortilla soup is nice and thick with corn and beans. Balsamic vinaigrette salad dressing is brought as 2 separate bottles with balsamic vinegar and oil so you can create your own mix. They also had a champagne vinaigrette that was great. Greek salad was great, and was served with warm pita bread. The teenager enjoyed his burger and fries. The service was friendly, prompt, and attentive. Eager to try a bad needed new restaurant, my wife and I enjoyed our first couple of visits to the Firewood Grill. Yes, there were some small hiccups common with a new eatery but overall we were pleased and i would have given them 3 or 4 stars. But after our last visits, we're cautious about the direction this place is heading. This place needs to decide what kind of restaurant it wants to be. The decor, menu and prices initially suggested a nicer, slightly upscale place but they seem to be sliding into sports bar/diner territory. It's hard to enjoy a nice meal when you have a couple of yahoos sitting at the bar talking excessively loud at each other and at the game on the television screen. If I wanted this kind of atmosphere I'd head over to Buffalo Wild Wings. We might give it one more try but if that continues we'll go elsewhere. read more

FOOD, SERVICE, Management A++. I came in not knowing what to expect. When I walked through the doors it had an inviting feel that displayed both a home feel and a lounge feel as well with their bar. I ordered the beet salad that was exquisitely balanced in different tastes. My girlfriend ordered the calamari for an appetizer in which their sauce for the calamari was great and different from place i have been to! Their portions are family sized as well with great affordable prices. Dinner I had Lamb tips which was delicious and my girlfriend had salmon. Great entrees for any occasion! For service we were greeted right away with a smiling hostess and the waitress as well. It was hard not to smile when she came to our table. It wasnt only her but you can tell the rest of the staff as well are all happy personalities. read more

I had heard good reviews of this place, and I was not at all disappointed. I had lamb chops, the most expensive item on the menu at $29, and they were excellent. Juicy and flavorful. The fried zucchini was firm but cooked with a nice grilled patina. The lamb tip appetizer was some of the best lamb kabobs I have ever had. The Dogfish Head 90 glass of beer at 16 oz, would be a $5 to $6 drink anywhere else. At Firewood it was only $3-not a happy hour special even. My "shot" of Woodford bourbon was served in a brandy snifter and was at least 3 shots worth of bourbon. And $7.50 was a bargain for this. Service was friendly and quick. Prices were great. The only knock I can put on this place is the somewhat loud atmosphere, which given the old diner building is unavoidable. I will be coming back here many times. read more

I work alot of hours and often do carry out! Gave this place a try 3 times. First 2 no big deal, a forgot salad or bread stixs! This last time tho will be the last time. Picked up 2 small steak dinners! Again no bread stix but that was the least of my worries! Amazing the cook even aloud this steak to leave the restaurant! My closest guess is week old road kill. After just two small bites my wife was in the bathroom throwing up for two hours and after i took a look at it and cut into the middle, im pretty sure steak isent supposed to have a grean tint. Costumer service has started to go down hill at alot of places but this place takes the cake. No joke, tho only time i have EVER seen meat like this was on the side of the road. Stopped in for a quick lunch. Ordered a chicken BLT sandwich and a bacon Swiss burger. The burger had two tiny greasy pieces of bacon and an obviously frozen patty. Sent it back to be fixed but unsure of how it came back. We were over it. My chicken sandwich was a tiny piece of chicken breast that they cut vertically and spread out on the bun to try to make it look bigger. We've had way better food for way less money. The manager was obviously aware that we were unhappy as there was nobody else in the restaurant at the time and he didn't bother to come over and speak with us about our issue. To us that was insulting as he didn't careabout why we were unhappy and just wanted to get us out the door. read more
