Goldberg and Scott are very good at what they do. They provide personable service at VERY reasonable rates, and perform the service quickly and expertly. They also trustworthy. I had to go to the City by way of Caltrains, and I needed some work done on my vehicle; however, I was not going to be back until later in the evening (after they closed). I left my car with them, and paid for the service beforehand. They performed the service as agreed, left the invoice with the vehicle, and I arrived later that late evening and happily drove off. read more

100% pleased with my experience here. I have a hard time trusting people with my car, since my dad is a mechanic and always did all of the work on my car until I moved across the country. I'm always worried about people feeding me BS and upselling me when it comes to places like this because I am a young female. The whole process of bringing my car in somewhere is usually stressful, figuring out how long it'll take, taking time off work, etc. All of those fears/that stress went away at this place. I called yesterday for an appointment for oil change for a Saturday. Got one immediately, first thing in the morning on Saturday. Got a call on my way over confirming my appointment for that morning. Dropped my car off, took a nice stroll around the farmers market and got some fresh strawberries, and my car was done in 45-50 mins (oil change and tire rotation). Prices very reasonable, upon paying, I wasn't upsold for anything - I was told honestly that everything looks good, my tires are still new/good, brakes good, etc. Couldn't have asked for a less stressful / better experience. I will be coming back for all of my future auto needs. read more

I've scrapped together enough for a diagnosis (and a turbo replacement). Initially it says not a turbo issue, and perhaps something much more serious. Care to guess what it could be? I'll post the results with a full story from start to finish soon. I'll adjust the rating when this is finished. The story isn't over and it would be unfair to say more now but it isn't looking good. 10/27. It appears the computer is malfunctioning, may need replacement, and then programming at a dealer. Some big expenses which I can't afford on top of the turbo replacement.Crushed again. 11/4/15 Looking like there is a motor issue as well. Turbo, computer, and motor, which was previously tested as in near new condition. But it was "stronger than ever, and dialed in. Come get it." just before a drove less than 1 mile to Boom! There was an empty energy drink in the passenger side floor, so perhaps the road test went bust. Perhaps the suggestion to just drive it with the turbo computer function off had already been implemented.(I said no, turbo controls off sounds bad). Don't know yet, but will soon. And again, I'll be reporting more as it develops, Great news is I found a financial backer to finally get it back to Stage 0 if not paints and some mods even if some things prove to be broken. I see SCCA cones, 11/20/15. Things are moving along swimmingly. The car is improving daily at the other place. I just checked my Yelp Messages for the first time and found Sam had replied directly to me 3 weeks ago. Sorry Sam I hadn't seen it until now. He sent his phone number and "I'd appreciate it if you would communicate with me directly as opposed to indirectly.Thanks in advance." And I replied "Sam, I would have appreciated many things, like following through on the "I'll find a turbo for you", and the shouting as I rode by "I'll call when the have the turbo". First off, let me apologize for your experience with our shop and the absence of communication. Secondly, for the record, I had purchased a turbo for your with the intention of calling you when I had received it. However, we had some updates to our client database and began to move toward a digital shop experience and had lost your number in the process. The turbo I had purchased for you has been in my office, for the past 5 months and I have not been able to contact you. I had dropped the ball and have not been able to communicate with you during this time. My sincerest apologies. Please give me a call so that we can discuss the situation and try to provide some sort of resolve for your bad experience. Cheers." Sam's reason for not contacting is he lost my contact information in a database move. Apparently his mobile was also affected. Odd. We had texted and called each other before so i was in the phone a well. But those pesky electrons getting lost. Like no back up made? And then he had my paper copies of my invoices with my address (1 block away) and phone phone number, and the credit card receipts. But I am to believe that for 5 month he held an expensive part in his tiny shop and found no way to contact me? Sorry Sam. That is beyond what a reasonable person would believe. Rather you now created this story to excuse your prior actions. Apologies rejected. Forgiveness requires two things. Acceptance of the wrong. And making it right. Ready to do that? read more

I brought in my truck as it had failed a smog check at a different garage that was not setup to repair it. First Auto figured it out fast, fixed the problem, and went the extra step to complete the smog process that was already started. I went to First Auto Service because it had such great reviews and on top of that had a Yelp deal! Let me tell you the reviews are deceiving and the deal was not worth it! I had to replace the radiator in my car, so I called over. First Auto Service mentioned that the radiator would cost $150-$200, which it was. He suggested that I buy a new thermostat for the car also, which he said would only be $10 max, when the actual price was $19. They mentioned that they would charge 2 hours of labor, which would be $90 per hour. Ok, so we were thinking that the total would come to about $400, well it ended up being about $500!! They charged an additional $80 fee for the thermostat that was only supposed to be $10 max. What happened there?! Also the guy in the office was super unprofessional. Whenever I was in the office, he was having casual conversations with the guys in the shop joking around with them instead of focusing on completing my service. His paperwork was all over the place, and of course when he gave us the total, he conveniently forgot to put our Yelp deal toward the price. I had to remind him. Not organized! Not professional! And hidden fees! They got the job done fairly quickly, but I will not be going back again. read more

I visited this place on 12/5, following great reviews. I am sorry to disappoint but I experienced a major issue with the results of their work - the person who changed the oil in my car forgot to put a rubber ring around the filter and as a result all the oil leaked out. I am lucky I have worked with cars myself and noticed on day 4 that the acceleration is not delivering and makes strange sounds, and the oil indicator lihgted up sporadically. I checked the level with the stick and what do you know - empty! I promptly drove the car to the place where the owner fixed it promising to punish the worker who did it severely, and asked me to come back, offering a discount. Even though he was very accommodating, the trouble I got in thanks to his unqualified worker almost killed the engine and could have caused an accident. I am not coming back even with a discount as the risk is not worth it. I'd give the place a one star but due to the nice owner I'll throw in a couple more. read more

We went in the following day and they diagnosed the problem within hours and fixed it for a great price! Edit: They called me and scheduled an appointment at the earliest to fix my rear breaks. Changing my rating to 4. My experience wasn't good. I called them regarding a shake in my steering wheel when I apply break. Just from the symptoms they were able to say what needs to be fixed which was great. When I asked when I can bring my vehicle he said "right now". So I assumed appointment is not needed. I took the car to the showroom to confirm that the fix that they are suggesting is the right thing. The dealership took a look at my vehicle and said all the breaks are almost done and all of them need replacement. The dealership is far from my home and I didnt want to get it fixed from them. So the next day I took the vehicle to first auto. They didn't inspect my vehicle. They said if something needs to be fixed they will give me a call. They said they needed half a day. I took the rest of the day off and stayed home to get things fixed. The next call I received was to pick up the car. They had just replaced the front breaks. When I asked about the rear break he said. "I don't know. yeah maybe that needs replacement as well" I was pissed that I took 1/2 a day off to get a part of the problem fixed. At this point I was pissed, but that wasn't the end of it. From then on whatever I asked he blamed it on me not showing up the previous and showed up today without appointment. The treatment was very bad. I didn't want to drive with new breaks on front and old ones on the rear (NO MECHANIC WOULD ALLOW THIS). So I called him the next day and asked for an appointment, he was ignoring me. Poor treatment and half measures.. read more

Have been going to this place for years. I called on Monday afternoon asking for an oil change. Sam said difficult today he"ll call me back at 3:30. No call. I call 9:30 Tuesday morning and they say bring it within half an hour. I send email to my work, drop off car, fill paperwork ask them where to leave the keys(leave it in the car) and head off to wait somewhere. After an hour with no call I head back and the car is still there. I ask the person what happened he said I didn't leave the key and the car wouldn't start. The key was right there and when I made him start it started no problem. Instead of owning up he ignored it, he said I should have left the key in his office (when in fact I had asked him where to leave the key), the car was not starting(it's a button start) and I was not reachable. I ask him for a solution. Only solution wait for couple of hours more when he finishes the car up on the lift and get to my car. No apologies. Go to another place if you want. Already more than hour late for work I had to take my unserviced car and leave. Booked appointment at my car dealer. I liked this place and always try to encourage small business. But I'm will not be coming back if it's so unreliable. read more

Had a flat and took my car in without an appointment. It was fixed in 15 minutes. Easy and affordable.

This could have been five stars, it was a fast oil change--everything was fine until a few months later, my car broke down after the engine made an awful noise. It turns out, my oil filter was punctured by something on the road. I had it diagnosed at a JiffyLube, and they've informed me that the filter that was put on with this oil change was not designed for my car, and hung below the frame of the car, making it vulnerable. The spindle that threads the oil filter to the engine was bent in this ordeal, and I am now looking at thousands of dollars in repairs to get the engine replaced entirely. read more

I took my car in for oil change and was surprised to see how thorough they were with checking all other fluid levels and topping off where necessary. Later on I checked their prices for dong a front end brake job to compare with another mechanic that I had been doing business with for years in Sunnyvale. Much to my surprise they were $75 less expensive. Based on their proximity to my residence and pricing they seem to have captured my business now and in the future. I have taken my wife's '09 4Runner and my '06 Civic to Sam and the service was fast and affordable. I appreciated that one of the techs stated that I should not get my tires rotated on my civic because America's Tire Co. does it for free if the tires were purchased from them. I don't normally submit reviews, actually I think this is my first, but I've had a few issues with First Auto, the last of which resulted in a dead engine and needing to buy a new car. I had been taking my Corolla here for the past few years without issue, and as the other comments have mentioned, Sam was always great. However, not too long ago after getting my oil changed, my car started shaking like a tractor when I drove away. I went back, and it turns out the mechanic hadn't seated the cable plugs correctly (?), which was a quick fix- but also a bit concerning, but I continued to go there. The last time I took my car in was in March to get the oil changed again. Sam didn't put a sticker on my car, and said just to come in again when the maintenance required light came back on. That light never came on, but what did happen is my oil filter light came on while driving, and then a few blocks later the engine died completely, and my boyfriend and I got to spend a lovely 2.5 hours on a sketchy street in downtown San Francisco at 2am waiting for a tow truck. Turns out whatever mechanic changed the oil last failed to screw the drain plug in all the way, and it slowly started to fall out, until if came out completely and dumped all my oil. The engine was shot. I tried to call First Auto, but the technician that picked up the phone said I haven't been in since November (just found a receipt from March), and someone else MUST of changed my oil since then, because it had been so long. When I told him no, that they were the last people to change my oil- I guarantee it- he got defensive and then tried to turn the blame on me for waiting so long to get the oil changed again (when in reality, Sam should of put a sticker on my car notifying me of what mileage to get oil changed at). I'm not sure if he could of also failed to reset the maintenance required light? I didn't pursue it any further, and don't typically like to bring stuff like this up, but this cost me probably around $6,000- which would of been the value of my car if I traded it in instead of scrapping it. I've heard horror stories like this in the past, and it's honestly terrifying that a mechanic can make such a small mistake that could result in such a big life altering and incredibly stressful and expensive series of events. read more
