At the time, it surprised me because we were only five years into a newer, cookie-cutter home in Irvine. Jonathan personally came out, assessed the issue, gave me a quote, and his tech completed the repair. It was a tough job, and the total cost was $795. I left them a glowing review. Fast forward to now--same issue. The garage springs broke again. Naturally, I called Jonathan, and he sent a tech named Danny out the next day. Danny was polite and quiet. When I asked how much the repair would cost, he said he needed to measure the springs first. He also started emphasizing that this was a "very heavy" and "custom" door, even throwing out a comment about the door being worth $15-20k. That immediately felt odd, considering every neighbor in my tract has a similar door. I reminded him that his company replaced these springs years ago. I stepped back inside, and when I returned about 15 minutes later, he was already working on the springs. That caught me off guard--I had asked for a quote upfront--but I trusted the company. I was a repeat customer, and they had treated me fairly in the past. About two hours later, Danny finished and told me the door would last for years. He mentioned installing heavy-duty "custom" springs and said he just happened to have them on his truck for another job later that week. When I asked for the price, he again said he needed to measure and calculate. Then came the shock: $3,400. I was floored. When I questioned the "hourly employee" claim, he admitted he works on commission. I paid the $2,000, but I wasn't happy about it. And not the price at this point, just the principle. The door is the same door. The springs were "heavy duty" last time too. Calling them "custom" doesn't justify the markup--especially when they're already sitting in the truck. Anyone can Google the actual cost of these springs. I think their thoughts are "lets call it custom" and that justifies the quote. Jonathan called me afterward and apologized extensively. We spoke for about 30 minutes. He agreed that dropping from $3,400 to $2,000 made no sense and even asked me not to post this review. I told him it wasn't personal--I believe he's honest--but the commission-based model encourages upselling. He also mentioned that Danny isn't licensed and works under his license, which is concerning given how dangerous garage springs can be under that high tension. After I confirmed I was still leaving a review, Jonathan reviewed my old invoice and claimed the previous work didn't include spring replacement. What can I say. Very nice approach, instead of ordering from another company that I had spoke with. Jonathan expressed that the LiftMaster from the other company would probably have been made in China I proceeded to listen to him and hired Jonathan First off, they sent me a email with an estimate. But in doing so he requested the money upfront with some kind of pre-pay something. I explained I do not deal that way as I don't know that much about all these different ways to pay these days. He was fine with that so we proceeded. The fellow that came out, I let him know and Jonathan know that I had a gorgeous very expensive. Stefan notice bush, where the old motor was sitting under. He reassured me. This would not be a problem and they would be very careful. Also, when the installer saw the bush, not really a bush, he proceeded to let me know he could put it lower and not be in contact with the Stefanotis plant. The only problem I noticed when he was done was it moved very slow compared to my old one, and it did not close to a point where a younger person could push and they could get in. My experience in the past, it can be adjusted to close tighter. A few days later, I noticed something strange, and went over to my huge plant and noticed my old motor and arm were missing They were a total of maybe nine months old, to the tune of $800. Finding in the past few months, it was not the motor that was the issue. Without asking me, and not with my knowledge, a few days later, I called Jonathan to inform him that the motor was missing, and the arm and motor that were put in were a lot shorter. The gate is very, very heavy, consequently, it needed a heavy duty motor As I talked to Jonathan, we argued back-and-forth, he telling me that they normally just take the old equipment. I I then said, the installer did not ask me if he could take it and I would've gotten a refund as it was not that old. He then proceeded to call the installer, and calling me back. He said they had thrown it away. I then asked, you had no right, taking it without asking me and the gate is closing extremely slower then in the past. Also that it is not closing to a point where child cannot push it and get in. That has been a heavy issue because of our swimming pool. Now, we are at a standstill, I know he is busy, but he has not returned my last conversation, as he feels he was justified and just taking the equipment, in adding when they changed out the motherboard, there was a four amp battery that they did not need to take. In closing, yes they do good work that is not my issue. My issue is they use the wrong size opener for the weight of my gate, also the length. I am unhappy, with the attitude, not necessarily the work ethic But you do not keep someone's property, placing it or not, unless you talk to the homeowner or the individual involved first. Repeat first you ask. That is my dilemma. So it is still closing slower and not as tight as it has in the past for the amount of money that was put out. I feel my age was a factor in this dispute between Jonathan and myself. As I said, my issue is different than maybe all the other individuals, and I'm sorry for the both of us for my unhappy over this transaction So in closing, I guess we are stuck So please in the future may be an outstanding company, etc. Do more research which is not my forte. I got a response from 3 garage repair businesses. One gave me a 2 hour windows to come provide estimate and never showed up. The second came and wasn't confidant and perhaps was an ESL Barrier. The 3rd was Jonathan from First Garage and Gates gave me an estimate cost for parts up front. He honored the appt time we agreed on, came and repaired, and tested. Johnathan was just fantastic!! My powered sliding gate had many issues for many months and then completely died.. A guy that does this kind of jobs a few months ago offered me to repair it with a forecasted cost of $2000 as the motor was for sure gone and I needed a new one. I called Johnathan yesterday and he came today. He did reconnect the motor to electricity and tuned the chain tension and another couple of technical issues and fixed it in 15 minutes!!! They broke my garage door to manually open it then forced me to pay them to repair the damage THEY did. UPDATE: Owner Jonathan immediately reached out to me to make right the unethical business practices of his employee--who I later found out was not his employee but contracted from another business (?). I reached out for garage door repair on Yelp. Fred quickly responded and was at our home within a few hours. After being quoted $300 for a repair, we opted to get a new garage door because this was the 2nd time we had to repair our garage door. Fred told me that they could probably install the door the following week. After agreeing on a certain price, Fred called me a couple of days later and said that the door cost would be $300 more than what he quoted me. Since I had already paid $763 towards the garage door, I didn't want to start the process over with another company so I agreed to the $300 price increase. The garage door ended up being installed a month later instead of the following week. After all was said and done. The garage door installation was great and we are happy with the finished product. I did not appreciate the $300 price increase, the company should know how much the product will cost them in order to give the customer an accurate quote. I had a broken spring in the center of my roll up garage door. David showed up right on time, took one look and immediately said he could replace it easily. Since the door is 22 years old he asked if I might want to have him install 1 spring on each side with a heavier cable, or if I simply wanted to stay with a single, longer and stronger spring in the middle. The prices David offered me were very reasonable for either option, and at no point did he try to upsell anything at all. He went right to work (had to move a lot of stacked up stuff inside the garage out of the way, but he did it kindly and happily.) David serviced the rollers and tracks as well and fixed something so that the door will never again come loose and fall off track - which it has done twice in 12 years. Before he left he helped me reprogram the entry code and made sure absolutely everything was functioning as it should. David is soft spoken, friendly, hardworking, and kind - and he definitely knows what he's doing! My first choice had initially been to go with another company - but I changed my mind instantly after hearing what he had to say.
