At first, I accidentally went into a residential parking garage and was locked inside with my car and no elevator. Luckily a resident was leaving and was able to let me out. I eventually found the main cruise port parking garage, but they were full and sending people to this overflow lot. It's basically a field where they park your car and it's almost a mile walk to the port. The day we parked they had a shuttle to get us to the cruise ship, but let us know there was no shuttle to come back to the lot afterwards. There's only a one car sized entrance/exit so it gets backed up when there are a lot of people either trying to come in or leave. I would only recommend this out of desperation. Definitely reserve your parking ahead of time in the parking garage near the port.

So when I was close by I called to confirm where I was supposed to park. PD: Parking Doctor Me: Hello, How are you? PD: what can I help you with ma'am? Me: I made my reservations online, can I confirm which lot I should be parking in? PD: just come to 1254 channelside drive we will show you where to park. Upon arrival, there were a bunch of guys standing around a folding table in a fenced area smoking cigarettes. The lot is in a makeshift grassy area between several dilapidated and empty warehouses. Upon returning from the cruise the driver pulls in by the gate and informs us that we either have to drag our luggage in between all the gates, through the muddy parking lot to our cars or we can pull our car around and he will unload the luggage. My car was a bit away and I had to maneuver around tree stumps, pot holes and half closed fences. Finally getting back to the gate, finding my luggage sitting in the middle of the field and no attendant. I am not picky, I don't normally even worry about where I park my car. But I didn't feel safe in this lot and I wasn't 100% certain my car was going to be there. I was not happy my luggage was left unattended.

I come over here all the time on my nightly walk and people watch. I also have been to Splitsville a bunch for bowling and eating. The LightHaus Beer Garden is at the middle of the wharf and is a nice place to watch a game, catch a beer, and enjoy the Tampa weather. Sundays are usually the best day to come here because then you can watch the cruise boats sail away. The Tampa sign is right next to here. There's not a giant Sparkman Wharf chair that you can get your picture at. Oh, and don't sleep on JoToro. I like getting Mexican food over there and it's very cheap. Once again, another great spot to people watch.

There were quite a few food places to choose from and a nice grassy area to sit outside and eat, which gave it a relaxing atmosphere. The downside for me was that there really weren't many shops; actually I believe I only saw one shop and it was for dogs. I think it would be much better if they added more shops and a souvenir shop would be awesome so visitors and cruise travelers could pick up some unique treasures while they're there. Overall, it's a decent spot to grab a bite and relax for a little while, but I was hoping for a bit more shopping and entertainment.

When I went, it was to see a comedian at the Tampa Theatre so it was a flat $15, which came out to $15.35, no matter how long you parked. (I'm actually not sure if the comedian was the reason it was "event parking", but I didn't see a ton of people going elsewhere.) That's kind of annoying, but it is what it is. I'm pretty lucky that we live in the suburbs so I'm not used to paying for parking. This lot is three blocks from the Tampa Theatre so super convenient. There's only one way out, so I bet when it's an actual busy night it will be hard to get out, but we had no issues. I'm just glad that there is a convenient covered garage so that I don't have to go looking for street parking.

Parking is convenient and affordable (more so than other…read morenearby garages), but the bridge to the Straz is gone now, so you have to go to the street to get there...and the elevators are too small to accommodate 5 expansive floors of vehicle patrons. The stairwell smells like a beach bathroom that's been urinated on/in a thousand times and never cleaned. It's soooo bad. That and the blood stains covered in something foamy at the bottom of one step made me want to puke. Exiting is a nightmare. Allow yourself 46-60 minutes during an event to exit if you're not parked on ground level.

She was with me for my hair appointment, so we turned the whole thing into a full blown mother daughter day, which made it special regardless of what we did or did not buy. Hyde Park Village is absolutely perfect for strolling, wandering, lingering, and people watching because if you want to observe how the well heeled set moves through life, this is your front row seat. You will see retirees with serious jewelry sitting at cafés for hours, young professionals dressed like they have brand partnerships, and valet attendants casually opening doors to cars that cost more than some people's homes. It is fascinating in the best way. As for shopping, I will say this with humor and humility, it is way outside of my budget. I can admire the displays, appreciate the tailoring, and mentally style outfits I am not purchasing, but when I look at the price tags I am reminded that I am there for the ambiance and not the transactions. That does not make the experience any less enjoyable because there is something wonderful about walking through a beautifully curated space without the pressure to buy. For me, Hyde Park Village works as a place to enjoy a gorgeous Florida day, grab a bite, observe the scene, and spend quality time with my mother, which is what truly mattered. I may not have left with shopping bags swinging from my arm, but I left with a memory of a really lovely day, and sometimes that is the better purchase anyway.
