This is the egg scramble with goat cheese. My wife loved it!

Mrs. Garrett and I went to Richmond, Virginia, to see my wife's twin brother "Deputy Chief Casey Johnson" graduate from the University of Virginia. He walked the stage to receive his Master's degree in Public Safety. We stayed near First Watch at the Hilton, which was within walking distance, in a city named Short Pump, Virginia. Upon entering First Watch, we immediately noticed the spacious, open-concept layout and rustic interior décor. It created a great vibe and complemented the friendly service perfectly. We sat at the bar and were helped by a kind young lady named Victoria, originally from Slovenia. She was attentive, checked in on us often, and struck the perfect balance--warm, helpful, but never pushy. We absolutely loved her. Then there was Mr. Smith. I noticed him right away because of how he moved throughout the restaurant--like he owned it. He was picking up trash, clearing tables, removing trays--doing the kind of work many leaders overlook. I thought to myself, Now that's how an owner should run a business: be one with his team, and in return, the team becomes one with him. As I observed Mr. Smith, I couldn't help but be in awe of the menu. Great drink selection, and the staff were energetic and hospitable. I ordered the Egg White Frittata with a side of mixed greens and house potatoes--it was wonderful. My wife had a scramble with goat cheese, and we shared a lemon curd pancake that was absolutely amazing. The mimosas were excellent. The place was spotless. We even DoorDashed from them the next day--and came back again, this time with Casey, my wife's twin brother and his fiance "Paula". Mr. Smith even suggested we check out Carytown--and we're so glad we did. We had a great time and eventually found our way to Brown's Island. It's a beautiful spot to walk, with views of downtown and paths that cut through the lush greenery of Richmond. Later, we stopped off at the nearby indoor/outdoor Westfield Mall. It was huge--perfect for shopping and soaking in some local vibes. During our trip, we met so many kind people--a pleasant surprise in a world that's not always so warm. We even took a drive to Charlottesville, about 45 minutes northeast of Short Pump. What a charming, quaint area! It reminded us of Berkeley meets Santa Cruz meets Los Gatos. If you're from the Bay Area, you know the vibe I'm talking about. Overall, this was an incredible trip. We truly fell in love with Mr. Smith at First Watch. He comes from a law enforcement and military family, and he shared a bit of his story with us. That was refreshing--especially in a time when so many people are reluctant to share anything personal, especially with a stranger. Mr. Smith, thank you. We suggest First Watch before you go anywhere else when visiting Short Pump, Virginia. Mr. Smith is now family, and we look forward to hosting him in the San Francisco Bay Area when he and his family come to town. So, if you're ever in Short Pump and find yourself hungry for a great brunch, phenomenal service, and that rare kind of energy that reminds you of home, good friends, and homemade food--go see Mr. Smith at First Watch. Tell him the Garretts sent you, and that they send their love, too. Enjoy the rest of your life. ‍

Turkey gravy biscuit with two eggs and grits

First time visiting First Watch and I have to say we were underwhelmed given all the hype about this chain. We went for breakfast about 10:30AM, greeted and seated immediately by hostess, waiter came by promptly and we both had coffee, very good blend and a pot left at the table. I liked that... My wife ordered the three breakfast avocado tacos and I ordered the turkey sausage gravy biscuit with two eggs. Wife loved hers, I ate about half of mine and gave up - turkey sausage is awful. I also ordered grits instead of potatoes as my side and they were the best I have ever had - delicious. I also ask for an extra biscuit and while it was quite large, it was dry and overbaked. When the bill came I was charged $3.29 for a single biscuit. Most restaurants don't charge extra for any bread products - especially at these prices. Total for both breakfasts, extra biscuit and coffee, over $42 plus recommended tip of 18, 20 or 25%. You don't get more than 15% from me unless service is stellar - while the service was acceptable, it was far from stellar and asking me for 18% tip as a minimum is a tad insulting, especially at First Watch pricing, while is very high end for a fairly average restaurant. Environment? Lots of hard services and a very loud din as a result, even when only about half full. I doubt we would return, given other menu items were equally overpriced, for example, a single multi-grain pancake, $8! No meat, nothing but one "huge" pancake. Most breakfast menu items were in the $13-16 range, which is quite high when compared to places like Cracker Barrell where prices are closer to $9-10 for most menu items for breakfast and their pancakes are INCREDIBLE as are their biscuits, which they do not charge extra for, by the way. Doubt we will be back.

This is my first time at first watch and I will definitely be back. The waitress was attentive. The food was cooked perfectly,the restaurant had a nice vibe, this was a very pleasant experience. I even ordered their kale juice to go and when I tasted it, it was very refreshing.

Is it even a Saturday morning if you don't start your day having breakfast at First watch with your family??!! We love first watch and tend to start our weekends off here with breakfast. From our many trips to FW we've learned that there is always a wait so it's best to sign up for the waitlist on line prior to driving there. They have a solid breakfast and brunch menu and also offer limited time specials as well which are always delicious. We love FW, check them out.

Such a good decision for breakfast! Went on a Friday morning and it was pretty busy but fast service. I got a cinnamon pancake with eggs and sausage. It was delicious. The farmhouse hash was tasty. Service was pretty good and the restaurant felt comfortable and clean. Would definitely return!

The restaurant wasn't crowded this morning so we're were seated quickly. The server appeared quickly but took quite a while to bring coffee. The food was good and came out fast. I was really disappointed and the servers lack of attentiveness. No coffee or soda refills and never checked back at all after the food came out. Very disappointing service.

We went here for a little Saturday morning brunch and it was an overall pretty good experience. We had about a 30minute wait so I highly recommend that you make a reservation before arriving. We had three small kids and two adults and we were pretty satisfied with our food and service. The pancakes were huge and delicious, I'm not sure what kind of syrup they give you but it's terrible. The chicken sausage, bacon, and eggs were all also on point. Additionally we had the hash which was surprisingly good. Finally we tried a few of their new juices the lavender mint was delicious enough for the kids to ask for two glasses of it. The passion fruit one was also quite good.

Their lovely fresh drinks made in house - kale tonic, meditation drink, and a watermelon sunrise (or something like that) :)

Oh, so good! We were seated quickly and our server had coffee in hand for us while we perused the menu. And what a menu! Lots from which to choose. Savory, salty? Take your pick. Hub had the Floridian French toast, which is loaded with fruit. The French toast itself had excellent flavor. This was served with warm syrup. I went with savory and ordered the Baconer omelet, which was true to its name with lots of chopped bacon, with Monterey Jack cheese and avocado. As if that wasn't enough, it came with potatoes and toast. And we couldn't pass up the summer special appetizer of bacon and cheese cornbread, served topped with honey butter. Yes, we rolled out full and happy! Super kind server and friendly register staff. Highly recommend!

Delicious restaurant with a varied menu and healthy options. I enjoyed my crab omelette with mixed greens on the side and slice of oat wheat bread. You can pass on the mixed greens for potatoes or fruit if you prefer. Service and ambience were top notch. I look forward to going back. read more

We love the food and staffs. I am so glad that they opened in Richmond area. They are very patient with my children and do their best to serve what we ask for. For example, my daughter only likes strawberry and when we order fruit cup only with strawberries they always try to do so. Of course, the food is delicious, fresh, and innovative. The server whom we started seeing in Midlothian location is now also working in short pump location, she remembers us and awesome. It gets very busy, but they do have 'get-in-the-line' app so that you can plan things around based on waiting time. Highly recommend to everyone! read more

I met my mom, godmother, and a few other people there one Saturday morning. It was rainy and there weren't manly people in there. I wasn't told the location late so I was the last to arrive. The server was rushing me as soon as I walked in saying that the kitchen was about to close and that I had to order immediately. I ordered Floridian French Toast and hot tea. Everything was good, I just wasn't impressed with the service. I will try it again when they aren't about to close. I have worked in restaurants for years and while I know it's annoying when people come in late, we didn't realize that they closed down so early, and you should NEVER make a customer feel like a burden for coming in to eat and give you money. read more

The Broad Street location in Richmond, VA was our first visit and it was a first class experience. I can't give the 5th star, because when I called to make a reservation the person that answered was rude and short (We are not from Richmond so we had no idea you had to make reservations online). But, after we arrived for our reservation, we were seated immediately, the waitress came over in maybe less than 2 min. She was awesome and our food was awesome. Thank you for the experience. We may even try the one in our home town. read more

I really wanted this experience to be great. The service is one of the worst in our area. From no manager to be seen ... no body in amazement came to see if our experience was great and then the server smashing the coffee pot in the table where 1/2 of the restaurant turned around ...... one employee did notice And apologized but the experience was done . The food was better than average ..... sorry I wanted to say better things but I do not lie for anybody. It will be a long time before we go back read more

First time eating from First Watch. I downloaded the app but noticed there wasn't an option to order my food to go. I work nearby so I just walked in to order. I was kinda nervous about how long it would take to get my food since I was on my break. I ordered the Asian Pork Belly Breakfast Bowl. My food came out at a decent time (thank goodness because I was hungry-hungry). This particular breakfast bowl is a seasonal dish. I wish it was permanent because it was so delicious. It's spicy and savory with a hint of sweetness. I highly recommend it. (Also I'm surprised at how well my food stayed in place because it's all about that presentation) read more

First visit and it was great! Waited about 30 mins for a table on Sat mid-morning but was able to snag a seat at the bar. Very loud space but everyone was having a good time. Kristina was wonderful - she promptly brought us drinks and engaged in a discussion about menu items. I chose the Eggs Benedict BLT and my daughter had the A.M. Superbowl which she hasn't stopped raving about. Prices were reasonable and the food was prepared and presented perfectly. We will be back. read more

We went to First Watch for Sunday Brunch. We downloaded the app and checked in ahead of time. Once we arrived, we were seated within/less than 5 minutes. I really like that there's healthy options that are still delicious. The wait for our food was longer tHan expected but it was overshadowed by how delicious and fresh our food was when it arrived. first of all, i'm from phoenix arizona visiting and this was one of the best dining experiences i've had in a while! especially after COVID, the staff was very accommodating and had us sat in a wonderful booth! our server Hailey was quick to ask us for our orders, and was very efficient in brining our the food! she recommended this amazing watermelon juice that we really enjoyed, and made sure that our food was out on time and quick! i had a very enjoyable experience. read more

Food was tasty, but service needs improvement. We waited at the hostess station, unacknowledged with three other parties for 10 minutes before a hostess appeared. She never greeted us, nor apologized for the wait. One couple left before she ever showed up. Once seated, we sat with menus for 25 minutes before our order was taken. When we finally received our order, the meal was flavorful and fresh, just not worth the wait. Hope staffing and training issues are resolved. Not planning to return. read more

Visiting from Boston and thought we'd give First Watch a try. We were seated promptly on arrival and quickly greeted by Bailey. She was super friendly and made great recommendations. I had the chickichanga which was amazing. Wife had the summer crab omelet which she enjoyed as well. My daughter had the farmhouse skillet hash which she won't stop raving about. We shared the million dollar bacon and a chocolate pancake. Mmmmm bacon! The food was fantastic and Bailey was frequently checking in to make sure we were ok. The restaurant is an open floor plan and I can see how it could get loud when busy. To compare this place to iHop is absolutely ridiculous and says more to their personal preferences of food quality. read more

First time visiting this place. Went for breakfast on a Sunday. There was a 30 minute wait but it was well worth it. This place is great! The menu had all the usual breakfast items on it. I had the lemon ricotta pancakes. They were amazing!! Very light and fluffy. Coffee was good. Service was great. Everyone very friendly. I will be going back. read more

Stopped in for a breakfast "lunch." I've been to one in VA Beach but this was better than I remember. Lauren was an attentive server with delicious recommendations! The chorizo omelette hit the spot. I love the unique menu items although I don't think my young children would agree. They would, however, enjoy the free WiFi. Great spot with a pleasant atmosphere! read more

My husband and I tried out First Watch a few weeks ago and had a great experience. We followed the advice of the previous reviewers and downloaded the App so we didn't have a wait when we arrived. The food was delicious and the portions were just right. The best part of our visit however, was our server Brandon. He was efficient, polite, friendly, and his timing was perfect! FW came highly recommended and the food did not disappoint. I had the avocado toast and others at the table had the lemon pistachio pancakes and plain pancakes. The atmosphere is great and comfortable though loud. Why only three stars? This was our first time here and when I asked what the server's favorite thing on the menu was she said she didn't eat breakfast here. Then we ordered the million dollar bacon and though three people came out with our food the bacon did not. And it never did show up. Halfway through the meal I found someone and told them not to bother. We didn't see anyone again until they brought the check. We were there pretty early and it wasn't that busy. I would try FW again but only because the food was good. read more

Remotes getting slammed around. Napkins and pens tossed onto the counter. Water being splashed onto the floor like a toddler throwing a tantrum. The entire atmosphere at the bar felt tense and uncomfortable. It got to the point where we almost felt awkward ordering anything because every request seemed like it was ruining their night. At one point another couple sat down next to us and almost immediately started looking around like, "is this really happening right now?" I actually ended up warning them that no, they weren't imagining it, and that it had been our experience the entire time too. That alone should tell you how uncomfortable the atmosphere was. Which is unfortunate because the kitchen actually did their part. The food was good. Really good. But good food only carries a place so far when the service makes you want to leave before the meal even arrives. I've worked in and around hospitality long enough to understand busy nights happen. But there's a huge difference between being overwhelmed and taking it out on customers. Tazza Kitchen has the food figured out. Now they just need the front of house experience to match it.

For entrees my husband got their farm & oak burger with Cole slaw and I got their wedge salad with fried chicken. Both were good. The salad was nice and cold and crisp, which was appreciated on such a hot day. It did have too much dressing so next time I might ask for less dressing or have it on the side. I enjoyed the food, service was good and it is a pretty restaurant. I'll probably come back for supper some time to try some of their more in-depth meals.

The menu has so many tempting options that it was hard to choose, but we both landed on the Hot Chicken Sandwich with cayenne butter--and we're glad we did. It had the perfect amount of heat: enough to bring some spice without overpowering the flavor. On the side, I ordered the green beans after our bartender/server highly recommended them. Normally, green beans wouldn't be my first choice, but they were seasoned perfectly and ended up being one of the biggest surprises of the meal. My partner chose the mac and cheese, which was the superior side (although both were excellent). The service was friendly, attentive, and genuine throughout the evening. Despite arriving on a Friday night without a reservation, we had no trouble getting a table. They only accept reservations for parties of 5-8, so I'm glad we decided to take our chances. One of my favorite parts of the evening was chatting with another guest at the bar. He and his wife shared several entrées with their young son, and they couldn't stop raving about the short ribs--which their son happily claimed for himself by the end of the meal! They also highly recommended the salmon, so we've already got ideas for our next visit. My only tip is that you think hard before deciding to eat on the patios if it's cold and windy, the umbrellas will attempt to fly away. It can also get chili on a brisk day. No parking lot but plenty of street parking.

Sunday was our second time dining here. The first time we visited, we waited a good 30-40 mins for our food, but quickly forgot about it because the food was delicious. Well, this past Sunday, about 45 minutes went by and our food had still not come out. We had not been checked on by our server until after the manager came over to tell us something had happened to "the ticket." She quickly scurried over to mention she was sorry and that she had noticed our food had not come out. We were offered muffins and our meal on them, which is nice, but I'm pregnant and was starving. Also, my 2 year old was starving and getting antsy. And to top it all off, my cheesy grits never got brought to the table. I'm only giving them 3 stars because the food has been great both two times. But, when a pregnant woman wants grits, SHE WANTS GRITS. read more

First Watch has delicious food choices and the atmosphere is very rustic and modern. Danielle was our server at the W. Broad St. location and she was awesome. She provided menu detail including her favorites, answered our questions, kept the pace of our meal including refills right on time, and was very pleasant. I had eaten at First Watch in Roanoke, VA and I had to share this restaurant with my foodie friends in Richmond. Definitely will return soon!
