Back again, fantastic as always. Our server Brandon was knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. Started with fried green tomatoes, one of our favorite appetizers. They're so good! I had the braised beef short ribs, which were melt-in-your -mouth. Paired with garlic mashed potatoes, roasted root veg, and some of the best collard greens I've ever had. He had the fried chicken with hot honey, garlic mashed potatoes, and more collard greens. That fried chicken was so crispy and delicious. Had the peach cobbler bread pudding for dessert, and it was an EXPERIENCE. The only thing that would have made the meal better was some of the slab bacon, but we'll know to come for breakfast or lunch for that next time! read more

Farm and Oak has been on my list and I finally made it! My husband and I wanted to have lunch out and picked Farm and Oak because we haven't visited this restaurant. They have a very limited menu at lunch so you have a few appetizers to choose from, a few salads and sandwiches and burgers, so straight up American food. It does skew southern with crab cake sandwich, pimento cheese and fried chicken. For an appetizer we decided to try the wings. They were good and came with ranch drizzled over the wings. For entrees my husband got their farm & oak burger with Cole slaw and I got their wedge salad with fried chicken. Both were good. The salad was nice and cold and crisp, which was appreciated on such a hot day. It did have too much dressing so next time I might ask for less dressing or have it on the side. I enjoyed the food, service was good and it is a pretty restaurant. I'll probably come back for supper some time to try some of their more in-depth meals. read more

We came here on Saturday evening, around seven o'clock. The parking lot had plenty of spaces near the restaurant. Upon entering, the hostess greeted us and, at our request, seated us outside because it was a beautiful day. The restaurant venue and ambiance were modern and well kept. The bathroom was clean and nice. The outside seating area was also fairly clean with comfortable seating. Our server (neither my partner nor I caught her name as she said it: she had beautiful braids with blonde streaks woven in) started on the right foot, took our orders promptly, and brought out our waters. I ordered the Smothered Pork Chop, and my partner chose the Fried Chicken, subbed pimento mac and cheese for the collard greens (who can blame her?). The food did not come out promptly. My best guess is that our server was seated with a large table and prioritized a better tip over the two top (us) outside. Eventually, the food came out (~25 minutes, so not terrible), but for the number of patrons in the restaurant, it was too long. My partner's mashed potatoes were cold, but she said the fried chicken and mac and cheese were fantastic. The potatoes tasted delicious, but they were simply not warm. My pork chop was very thick, like a filet, which is okay, but it wasn't what I expected. I prefer a thin pork chop, so that it cooks all the way through (more solid, not soft). It was passable. The beans and rice (Hoppin' John) were also not what I was expecting; I was thinking more New Orleans-style, but they were bland, like cream of mushroom soup on unseasoned beans and rice. We ordered the banana pudding for dessert. We ended up waiting for that for ~20 minutes as well, a half-pint glass of banana pudding with underripe bananas mixed in. Note to the chef: heat ripens bananas, so you could toss a few in a skillet with a little oil in a pinch (egg yolks also work). We waited for another 10 minutes, and I finally went inside and asked the hostess for the check. I realize it is difficult to serve, but you must also consider asking your colleagues for help if you have too much going on. All in all, the food was satisfactory, but the service was lacking. We ended up waiting an hour longer than we should have had to. I semi-recommend Farm and Oak, but look to be seated with the better server, John. He and the hostess saved our experience. read more

My goodness! The best part about visiting home is being guaranteed some GREAT food! For a Sunday early afternoon (~1pm), it was fairly quiet inside with plenty of seating. Bright, airy and spacious, the decor felt like a minimalist farmhouse vibe. S/o to our waiter, Daniel -- his patience was God-sent after we pored over the menu for what felt like HOURS before finally deciding to split a savory and sweet smorgasbord of EVERYTHING. The standouts: Peach Cobbler French Toast (a dessert, for sure, but amazing when paired well with savory foods, West African Shrimp and Grits (huge shrimps, grits could've been a bit more whipped), Cheddar Biscuits, Fried Brussels Sprouts (saucy and huge! so good!), and Short Rib Egg Rolls (not enough short rib), Southern Breakfast Bowl (classic), Blackened Catfish (flavorful). They really should have some bread or biscuits to munch on because the food took well over 30 minutes to come out. Probably closer to 45 minutes. We were starving. In RVA, there are a lot of great restaurants from which to choose. The service was the best thing about my experience at Farm and Oak. It was attentive and timely and congenial. The drinks were ok-- using rail products for what I think they intended to pass off as craft cocktails. My blackened fish was well seasoned and attractive on the plate, but overcooked and dry. The hoppin John (beans and rice) were delicious, and the charred creamed corn were house made-- tasted to me like the corn was not fresh, but frozen. Not the worst dining experience I've had this year, but far from the most memorable. I'm grateful for the food on my plate, but I would go elsewhere for a spec occasion. read more

I brought my father here for a Father's Day dinner, and I was really looking forward to it. I know this is the sister location to Lillie Pearl, so I planned on ordering my usual dishes and had some recommendations for my father. Simply put, the food was not up to par with what I've come to expect at Lillie Pearl, even though the menu items are the same. The short rib egg rolls were bland. Literally, they tasted like nothing. The Brussels sprouts were decent. My father ordered the short rib entrée, and while he thought it was decent, I tried it and again found it not up to par. The desserts were decent enough, but the banana pudding which usually has caramelized bananas on top in addition to the candied nuts did not taste the same. The bananas were mushy and brown, mixed throughout the pudding, and there were none on top, only the nuts. Chanced upon this restaurant and found a gem! A spin-off from Lillie Pearl, Farm and Oak serves amazing comfort food. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Sat outside on a beautiful Friday evening. Shrimp and grits was very flavorful. Smothered pork chop was delicious but a little tough for me. Banana pudding and Oreo red velvet were yummy. Food and service is good but you need to be aware that they automatically add a 20% tip, which appears on your bill as a "Service Charge" and our waitress never mentioned this and I almost added an additional tip. I noticed the bill from the table next to us and in addition to their $17 plus change "Service Fee" they left a $22 tip, so in the end they ended up leaving a $39 tip, very unscrupulous of this establishment, that's why I gave them a one star review and won't be returning. read more

This was our first time at Farm and Oak. We are big fans of Lilly Pearl and this is very similar (same owners). The restaurant is nice and open and tables aren't right on top of each other. There is a small bar area and outdoor space (although it was about 10099 degrees outside so nobody was out there). We started with the short rib egg rolls, beet and burrata salad and the smoked wings. The salad was HUGE and delicious. The beets and radishes were pickled and the candied walnuts a nice sweet crunch. The egg rolls were amazing. The smoked wings were a little to heavily seasoned for me but my husband loved them. My husband had the shrimp and grits and it was so good. The grits were the definition of comfort creamy yumminess. The pork belly bits were a nice touch. I had the catfish with hoppin john. I came to Farm and Oak late one night during a work trip. This establishment was the only restaurant within many miles of my hotel that was open late at night-- and boy, was I thankful for that! After a long day of traveling, this meal was exactly what I needed. Farm and Oak is a clean restaurant with accommodating staff. I have a shellfish allergy, and when staff takes the extra steps to make sure that I am safe, it means a whole lot to me; and that's exactly what Farm and Oak did for me! Since a good chunk of the menu contains shellfish, I ordered the Crispy Skin Salmon, the Charred Heirloom Carrots, and the Fried Brussel Sprouts. The Salmon was perfectly cooked and the sauce that it came with was divine. I felt that the arugula, corn, tomato combo did not pair right with the fish itself. The carrots were amazing- no notes here- simply amazing. Now, as for the brussel sprouts, it was a huge serving and had some major kick to the 'Asian sticky sauce'. I really wanted to order the Cauliflower Steaks and the Roasted Beets, however they were out. The price point of the food was quite high in my opinion. Also a they add a 20% service charge on all meals, not including tip. Something that you should take into account for when dining here. read more

This is a case of service and service charges really messing up an almost perfect review. The food. DELICIOUS! Fried chicken cooked perfectly. Seasoned perfectly. Paired with perfect sauces. Having been to this place twice prior to today I was very disappointed in seeing how far it has fallen from its heyday. Simply put, we arrived and stood at the hostess desk for 20 minutes and no one came over to check on us, no one came over to inquire why we even walked in. Went to Farm and Oak to celebrate my sister's graduation. At first, everything was great. The food was good and our waiter provided good service throughout the meal. When it came time to pay, our party decided to leave the tip in cash. We collected the money and gave it to a relative at our table, who then handed the tip to our waiter. We felt he deserved a tip based on the service he provided. As we were leaving the restaurant, we encountered the waiter outside. He was talking to himself and said, "n****s broke." My mother asked, "Who broke?" and he responded, "Y'all broke ass family can't even leave me a tip." I was shocked because we had in fact left him a cash tip. I went back inside to address the situation and told him we had tipped him. Instead of handling the misunderstanding professionally, he continued arguing and insulting us. The issue isn't the tip amount--we tipped him because we appreciated the service. The issue is the disrespect and unprofessional behavior that followed. No customer should be spoken to that way, especially while celebrating a special occasion with family. I hope management takes this matter seriously because this experience completely overshadowed what should have been a memorable celebration for my sister's graduation. read more

This is THE new Brunch place for me. I will be telling everyone i know how good this place is. For starters, the hot honey, they put it on everything and for good reason. The fried pimento is an absolute must. The real stars for me were the carrots with the goat cheese, you MUST order these, no matter the time, and the French toast. My husband and I went here for supper on a Thursday night. We started with the fried green tomatoes with chow chow and ranch. They were very unique, spicy and tangy. I chose the crab cakes, and my husband had the short rib with mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. Everything was absolutely delicious. The portions are generous, but not ridiculous. We each left only a few bites on our plates because we were full. The service was very friendly, and staff were very willing to answer our questions. We recently visited Farm Oak, which now occupies the space where Natalie's Taste of Libano used to be. There was no wait when we arrived, and we were pleasantly surprised by how spacious the restaurant is. It features a full bar and even has a separate room that looks perfect for events or private gatherings. The menu isn't very large, which we actually appreciated, as it made it easier to choose. We started with the pork belly appetizer. It was good overall, though the barbecue sauce was a bit heavy for our taste--we ended up removing some of it. That said, the corn that came with it was outstanding--full of flavor and probably the highlight of the meal. We also tried the cauliflower "steak." It's essentially roasted cauliflower with a tomato-based sauce and some spices. It wasn't bad, just not particularly memorable for us. After finishing our dishes, we paid and left. While the food might be better suited for a different palate, we're still glad we gave Farm Oak a try. It's a nice space with potential, and we hope it finds its audience. read more

Wow, what a find! My husband and I were on one of our road trips and stopped for the night near Richmond. We always look for small local restaurants with regional food. It was late and Farm and Oak is open late so that's what we chose. First of all our server Hannah greeted us with a smile and was terrific. We started with the fried Brussels sprouts and a wedge salad, both excellent. The Brussels sprouts came in a large bowl, it could have been an entire meal. My husband had the fried chicken and I had the short ribs. They both came with collard greens and mashed potatoes. Mine came with a delicious mixture of roasted vegetables. Went in for lunch on a Monday and everything was so good! I got the og chicken sandwich and it was delicious! The chicken was fresh and crispy and the batter well seasoned. My mom got the cordon blue sandwich and she said it was really yummy! The star of the show was the peach cobbler bread pudding it was piping hot, the peaches sweet and the bread pudding was crisp on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside it was the perfect way to end the meal. Not worth it. My meal tasted like a northern take on sourthern cuisine that was bought frozen from a big box store, cooked, and dressed up. I was surprised I didn't see parsley thrown everywhere. The food was bland. Fried green tomatoes lacked texture and was not worth $12 for the 3 pieces. In previous posts, I saw 4 pieces. The crab cake sandwich made Mcdonald's filet-o-fish look like a lobster dinner. Ambiance was weird. There were cow pictures from Hobby Lobby and 90's R&B music playing loud. The silverware seemed like it came from a yard sale. If there was suppose to be a farm theme, I didn't catch it. Service didn't match up to the 20% fee that was automatically added on. There were only 2 other tables when I was there but I hardly saw my waitress. My glass was almost empty when I finished my meal. The vibe from service was more that of fast food.
