The best lobster roll I've had outside Maine. They trust their product enough to not douse the meat with mayo - just a touch is enough, and they don't over season with tarragon, like so many hipster places do. The roll stands proudly by itself but does come with pretty decent fries. Pretty expensive, but it's a hip place serving fresh product a looong way away from the ocean. Comes w delicious field and fire bread to dip in the buttery broth. Also, if you feel like having some wine with your meal, head over to Apartivo across the market and they'll deliver the seafood meal to you in that seated section or patio. As far as counter service for their seafood case, these guys are pros. Friendly and knowledgeable. Selection is local farm raised and from both sides of the coasts. I've never gotten home and been disappointed with my cut. So many times I've told them what I'm trying to do with a dish at home and they know the perfect fish and portion for what I need. They'll also debone some of those fillets with pesky spines as an added curtesy. They really want you to enjoy your fish however you or they prepare it. Love this place! read more

Well this is unfortunate. 2 stars only cause the fish quality and knowledge is best in MI. Prices to match. Many items overpriced though. That is not the issue here though. Customer service is. I drove an hour with a cooler to buy a couple of hundred dollars worth of fish. Wed 230pm. Not a sole in line or waiting. One fishmonger at a laptop with his back to the customers. 5 or so other employees who also had me on the pay me no mind list. I strolled the counter making eye contact with the multiple staff who walked buy without acknowledging me. After 5 min I had my order in mind and decided to approach the counter at the register so possibly on of these clowns would offer to take my money. Again employees walked by looked at me and kept on moving. More customers rolled in and noticed my frustration. At this point some manager looking person came marching over and demanded to know where everybody was. Never acknowledging me. I left having never spoken to a staff member. I will never return. I question why I keep returning to this place. The seafood is overpriced, even if you include the shipping. The big issue I have is the staff. I usually have the same guy wait on me (I think he's a manager or owner). He is always extremely rude and hostile. In my opinion, the positive reviewers have very low expectations for seafood. I ordered the fish and chips. As stated earlier, the fries were excellent. For cod at $14, I expected more! I received three small pieces of cod that was fried way to hard with no batter to protect the over cooked, bland fish! Had I not thrown it away, I would have shared an updated picture! As for the mediocre service, it matches the underwhelming fish! For Grand Rapids, this maybe acceptable. My sister and I went for a late lunch. I ordered the whitefish sandwich which was really good, my sister ordered the chowder in a bread bowl as per the black board and was told it could be served that way. I forgot to pack my lunch on Thursday this week, so I stopped in to the Downtown Market to see what sounded good. I was headed for sushi, when the board at Fish Lads caught my eye. Specifically the Po Boy. I love me a good Po Boy, so I pulled up a barstool and ordered the one with soft shell crab instead of shrimp. It did not disappoint! A very good sandwich, filling, fresh ingredients, good flavor. The fries were really good, too. And, of course, they have malt vinegar for the fries, which is my favorite. Service was good, and the guys working there seemed to be having a good time and they were all very friendly, chatting it up with customers. The only downside is it ain't cheap. Worth the cost for sure, but not a place to grab lunch regularly just because of the price. With that said, good luck finding a cheap seafood place with seafood as fresh as Fish Lads serves. This place has amazingly fresh fish and seafood. My partner and I stopped in on a weeknight for dinner and had a shrimp Po Boy and the lobster roll- both fresh and delicious, plentiful servings with hand cut fries. A few weeks later we stocked up on cooked lobsters and crab dip for a New Years feast, which was delicious (crab dip is spicy but oh so delicious) and the guys behind the counter were totally helpful and friendly. Recently my wife got the oysters which she said were delicious. All in all a great experience, educated and dedicated staff, great food. It is an expensive place for sure- sea food is typically rather expensive however, so that's not a major surprise. read more

Found Fishlads online and read the wonderful review. Went in on 1/26/19 and ordered 2 orders of the perch fish and chips. The fries were under cooked and the fish was over cooked and rubbery. When an employee asked how was I meal, I explained the fish was over cooked and rubbery. He said "ok, thanks" and walked away. No one else came to speak with us, or offer us a refund or a replacement meal. Very disappointing experience. read more

They are fish professionals...they know their fish and everything is really fresh. Smoked fish dip is the bomb diggity dog! Lobster rolls--one of the best I've ever had. At $19 a pop it better be! Fresh and full of lobster chunks. And not too much mayo. Seafood cioppino (fish stew) was very delicious. A little on the peppery side but that was fine. Pricey joint, but you get good stuff here.
