My husband and I decided to go here for dinner on a Saturday night instead of Red Lobster. Bad choice. We are from San Diego and prefer to eat at non-chain restaurants. Apparently that's not a good rule of thumb for Fredericksburg. I got 1lb of snow crab legs. He got the fried shrimp and grilled scallop combo which comes with hush puppies and two sides. He chose mac 'n cheese and grilled veggies. Total: $33. We congratulated ourselves for paying half of what it would cost at Red Lobster... but it turns out we got pretty much half the food. I liked the snow crab okay, although the butter tasted weird, possibly margarine. I was very frustrated to not have a metal fork to crack open the crab legs. They provided a wooden mallet (useless!) and a metal crab cracker, which with the smaller legs just pulverizes them and gets bits of shell into the meat. But the crab was decent, and it was only $13. His combo was tiny. He saw it and said, "It looks like a kids meal". He got 6 fried shrimp, one scallop cut into four pieces, four hush puppies, and the sides, which come in very small styrofoam cups. The shrimp were fine. The scallops were rubbery and tough and had a weird tarry sweet sauce. I liked the hush puppies and ate them for him; he didn't like them. The other sides were decent. Overall, not worth $33. First time visit to the Fish N' Grill and it will not be the last. The food was excellent and the portions, wow, you definitely get more than enough (thank goodness for take home boxes). The staff was very attentive, never an empty glass on the table and made sure you were completely satisfied. Wanted so bad to like this place. Stopped by after a local appointment and this was my first meal of the day at 1:45, so I was hungry. I ordered the fried chicken special for lunch, coming with two sides. The collard greens and cole slaw both were good. The chicken, although hot and juicy, had no flavor at all. I kept adding pepper and hot sauce to no avail. My husband had the cheesesteak (wish he wouldn't order them in this area, since he's from New Jersey) and even though they said the roll would be grilled, it was very soggy and not good. I yelped this place as my boyfriend and I were leaving Raleigh NC and wanted to break up the trip back to MD. Upon entering the restaurant everyone was welcoming and there were explicit No tipping signs as" it was there pleasure to serve you " which I liked . The service was a little slow to the non locals . (It was not extremely pa led or busy. I don't think it was on purpose at all but it took a while for 5 pieces of chicken and a Po sandwich to come out vs the various seafood platters that came out before ours . My husband and I found this place on Yelp and gave it a try. We wanted crabs and called and they advised us they had jumbos. The crabs were not what we considered jumbo but were good. We also ordered the hush puppies and they were very good. My husband ordered shrimp and they were 4.5 out of 5. The place was very clean and the service impeccable! One of the best servers we have ever had in Fredericksburg. Very attentive. We will be returning to try some of the other items on the menu! Great job guys! read more

I was in VA this past weekend visiting some family and stumbled across the fishNgrill! I was very excited because I have always been a fan of good ol black cookin! I had a fried oyster basket with some collards and sweet potatoes. I hate to say that this was far from the sweet fried black food I am used to eating. This place does NOT know how to cook collards. I did have to give 2 stars however for the decor and the clean restrooms. I unfortunately spent a good deal of time in the ladies room after the grease soaked basket of bullshit I consumed. The food is awesome. I had the scallop & oyster combo and asked if I could sub fried clams instead of scallops, which they were happy to do. It was delicious. My sister had scallops grilled. They were the best I've had in a long time. Macaroni & cheese was incredible, and the other sides of potato salad and corn on the cob were delicious. I've only been here once but the visit was great. The crab legs were fresh, tender and juicy. The catfish and shrimp were yummy. Other places have larger pieces of catfish but theirs was still okay. I have been going to Fish N' Grill since it opened a couple of years ago. I have tried several of the items on their menu and its usually pretty good overall. They have a decent size menu and everyone that I have talked to about their food seems to enjoy it. What has kept me as a customer is their CRABS. Here's a little info for all you crab lovers out there: Prices: The priced were what originally drew me into Fish N' Grill. Back in their "glory days" they had the absolute best prices in town. When I first started going there about 2 years ago they had a sign out front for $9.99/dozen (might still be there today). These were obviously not the best quality of crabs and unless you don't mind flushing your money down the toilet, should be avoided. The #2 males were a little better, I think they were around $15/dozen, the #1 male were priced great at $20/dozen, and the dreamy Jumbo's were priced very well, usually around the $25-28/dozen range. Back in theses days I used to be a 3 times a week customer. Lately, when I call to check on their prices, I get responses like $40-50/dozen... And don't look to get any serious discount these days for buying the 1/2 bushels either. The problem is that you can find better quality crabs at other locations in the area for these prices. They should have stuck with their old strategy of cheaper crabs and worked on the quality thing... They would probably double their yearly revenue. Quality: The crabs at Fish N' Grill are good, but they are hit or miss. Some times I go there and get 1-2 dozen and am blown away at how good they are. Then I'll go the next weekend and I'll get a dozen or two of total junk... trash crabs.... I don't know if it is a supplier problem, lack of time available to sort to trash crabs out prior to serving (should be weight first, then size), or simply a mathematical calculation of how many junk crabs to give you in your dozen... The fact is, with the prices they are charging these day ($30-50/dozen), you would expect a solid dozen crabs that have been checked for weight, size, and guaranteed to be good. Those light weight trash crabs should be thrown to the $9.99.dozen pile and made into the daily specials. Now, when I go into the deli and order them, I always check the weight when I get back to the car. Being burned a couple of time with trash crabs has taken some of their credibility away from them. Luckily, they are always willing to take them back and provided you with another dozen if you are unhappy. Service: The service at Fish N' Grill is pretty good in comparison to some other local establishments. The employees are polite, the place is clean, and the location is very convenient. All in all, I would give Fish N' Grill 3.5 stars. They have the potential to become a five star seafood place if they would just focus a little more on thier quality assurance practices (making sure all bones are removed, getting rid of the trash crabs, etc.). My recommendation would be to focus on the original roots of the establishment... You already have the customer base, keep your prices reasonable and your quality up and you have a "diamond in the rough" with this shop. ========================================================================= ****UPDATE***** AUGUST 2017 Fish N' Grill has made some serious improvements to their restaurant. They have done a total renovation on their store and have definately continued to improve on the quality of their food. Im still weekly customer and have found that they have the BEST crabs in town. The prices have come up since their early days, but so has the overall quality of what they deliver and the line that you stand in each and every visit is proof that FNG is getting it right. Their in the supply and demand business, and what they supply is definately drawing in the demand. Service is always awesome, the food is good and it is very reasonably priced. WELL DONE FNG!!! Found this place on Yelp when passing by Fredericksburg. Huge hangover, so had to stop by for fried goodies. Soon as we walked in, all the staff was so kind. Got the oyster and fish combo with mac n cheese and mashed potatoes. Everything was so so so so good. The mambo sauce was fun on my oysters. It's like a hot bbq. Will come back for sure. Was really pleased to see such great customer service. For example, a couple was walking toward the door with their boxes after eating and an employee stopped to bring them a bag for the boxes. If you are in the mood for great sea food at reasonable prices then Fish N' Grill is the place to go. Started with the crab flat bread that was loaded with crab meat. Followed the appetizer with the "Steam Pot" for two. Reasonably priced at $39.99 the steam pot was chuck full of snow crab, mussels, clams, shrimp, sausage, corn on the cob & potatoes; more than enough for two. The dipping sauces were savory & the hush puppies were done to perfection. Only thing keeping my experience from being a 5 star were the tough/chewy clams. Would definitely go back!!! read more
