I went to Fish With You with my fiance and some friends. It's located a few minutes away from the San Mateo Caltrain station. The restaurant is small and cozy and the servers were very attentive. We were given our menu as soon as we sat down and the prices are really impressive. While ~$17 a bowl is fairly average in the Bay Area, the portion sizes are absolutely massive here. Our friends had said they usually only order a small size and split it without feeling hungry after, so we did the same. I split a large bowl of Royal Tomato Fish with my fiance (he was feeling particularly hungry) and the broth was so nice and flavorful. The tomato flavor was refreshing and the fish was absolutely delicious. We also ordered an extra serving of rice because large soup orders come with a complementary serving of rice. The rice was really nice and fluffy, although $2 for a bowl might feel a little expensive. Considering how a small bowl of soup here is basically two adult human servings, I didn't mind at all. The waitress came over a few times to just check in with us and was very attentive to our water cups, which was really nice. The service was great and I felt very comfortable eating here. I'd definitely go here again, although I'm not sure how much of the menu I'd explore because a lot of the items are spicy. Although the restaurant is really small, my friends and I were able to find seating really easily on a Monday evening for dinner. You order everything by QR code from your table and everything comes out in about 20 minutes. In terms of flavor, all our broth choices (signature, sichuan, tomato) tasted pretty good, but I wish there was more substance per soup. This restaurant chain has over 2000 establishments worldwide, and I can definitely understand its popularity. We ordered the Green Szechuan Pepper and Fish & Golden Soup Suancai and Fish. Both great soups, but my favorite out of the two is the Golden soup. The Green Szechuan has good flavor, but it's a challenge avoiding the peppercorn as it's a bit overbearing -- losing the flavor of the soup and moreso of just me getting a numbed tongue lol. The Golden soup is a hot and sour soup. I also enjoyed the basa and snakehead fish options. The workers were really friendly and accommodating. Rice comes free with the soup and you can refill as many times as you'd like. The only thing I'll say is the soup pot is not as hollow as you think, but still good portions of food. read more

I highly recommend the lemon sour (yellow colored) soup. Perfect for those who don't want anything overwhelming or spicy. The suancai was also very good but could've been less salty. The chewy sweet rice cake was good. I am surprised a lot of their appetizers are on the sweet side. Not expected but it's probably to accompany all the food they serve which is strong in umami flavor. The issues were from the rice. You default get a free 2nd bowl of rice with every M size soup purchase. (L size gets you 2 refills) the rice was hard, and cold. Rice you should be using for fried rice, meaning it was probably leftover. Not a problem but it didn't sit well with the soup. We ordered the golden soup (small) and signature (large) this time. The past two times we've come, the portions have seemed bigger. The size and designs of the bowls have also changed. The large comes in what feels like a larger bowl now, and they are more generous with the toppings. Now my boyfriend and I can happily eat one large and be full, whereas before we could come very close to finishing one large and one small. This is a great improvement! Service also seems to be more attentive, whereas before we were never offered rice refills or water, this time we were. It's great to see these improvements being made. The interior of the restaurant does still feel more fast casual or cafeteria like as someone else said, but it's an approachable environment. New fave soup spot! We got the golden spicy sour soup, and I'd definitely go back to try some other flavors. Ordering from the online menu was quick and easy. The food came out relatively fast. The mala was so on point for the soup! The first level of spicy (one pepper) was great for eating with rice, next time will venue into the two pepper level of spicy for sure! Soup comes with rice, and we ordered the youtiao or chinese donut as well, which was great for dipping. Next time, I would skip getting the sausage - nothing special. Rice was done well. According to them, their popular soups are in order: Laotan, green pepper, and royal tomato. I'm not sure why their "signature" suancai & fish is not up there, but it was certainly delicious and mouth numbing. These soups are mainly stewed using pickled vegetables, herbs, and spices, and littered with fish filets for a light, zesty, and healthy meal. You can choose small or large for most of them; the menu suggests getting large for two people, but I easily shared the small with an appetizer and dessert and had leftovers, though we didn't have a large appetite. If you want more rice, then get large as it offers an extra bowl for free (though rice is not worth the extra ten bucks). The large also offers 4 side dishes of your choice opposed to 2 (the signature flavor has fixed sides). You also have a choice between snakehead or basa fish (except for the signature flavor). The soup bowls look huge, but they're an optical illusion as the actual bottom is halfway through the bowl. The interior is a little small and cramped, and it smelled like bleach when we came in at night. The servers aren't the best at English, so it's up to you to figure out the menu, which you can safely order from using the QR code on each table. It looked like there was self-serve water, but a waiter just gave us our waters anyways. A lot of people order takeout from here, and it seems to carry well. - Signature Suancai & Fish (small) It's advertised as medium spice pretty much (two chili peppers) and it did have a strong kick of heat from the chili peppers which were littered through the soup! There were endless Sichuan pepper which made my mouth instantly go numb on contact. I had an interesting time playing the game of how to scoop around the Sichuan pepper so that I don't bite into one and paralyze my entire mouth. The signature flavor automatically comes with snakehead fish (which still has skin attached), sliced celtuce, and sweet potato glass noodles, which was a good combination. The noodles are nice and chewy, and the celtuce acts as a crunchy veggie contrast. There were also pieces of tofu skin floating around. The snakehead has a distinct eel-like feel, firm texture, and muskier taste. The soup itself tasted like a smooth, zesty soup made with pickled mustard greens, and it was somewhat comforting despite the danger of the peppers lurking about. - Classic Crispy-Coated Chicken Tender The crispy fried coating was a bit uneven with not enough crunch. You can choose chili powder or ketchup as a topping. It was extremely basic with some hard spots. It's worse or on par with the popcorn chicken at generic boba spots. - Coconut Lava Ball First time I've tried this and was pleasantly surprised to actually taste coconut lava! It's like liu sha bao except the lava part is a creamy coconut liquid with some sago. The outside is a delicious fried chewy dough with pockets of crunch - I'd definitely get this again to end. The menu is not too extensive but looking at the size of different pots, I think the small could feed 2 average appetites and the large could feed 3 average appetites. You'll get rice with it no matter what and this is definitely something you should have with rice cause it'll get pretty salty otherwise. You'll get the option to add some extras and we opted for the lotus root which was great because it added a necessary crunchy texture. However, it wasn't prepped well because we got some pieces that had the gray root. All in all, the meal was tasty and good value since we shared. The restaurant is on the smaller side and all of the tables were already occupied when we got there during Sunday dinnertime, but the wait time was reasonable. We got a small Tangy Lemon Fish and a large Tomato Flavor Crispy-Coated Chicken Tender to share. Both soups came with rice, and we could choose two sides to add to the small one and four sides to add to the large one. The menu suggests a small for 1 person and large for 2 people, but I think the portions are generous. The small soup would probably suffice for 2 people and the large soup could probably serve 3-4 people. The lemon soup was more sour and acidic than I expected, but I should've known better since suancai is already a bit sour. My friends liked it though, so that one came down to personal preference. The fish filets were tender, and all the ingredients soaked up the soup's flavor nicely. The tomato soup had a nice acidity to it and a more balanced flavor profile. Though the fish was tender, we didnt feel that it absorbed enough of the broth flavour, and it couldve done better with more time to let the flavours seep in. One thing to be aware of is that in the app order link on the tables, the large portion of the signature sauerkraut fish dish is non spicy, whilst the smaller one is spicy. Recently in China a new type of restaurant became really popular. It's typically a chain restaurant serving very few similar dishes centered on one particular recipe. For this restaurant it's fish with pickled vegetable. I believe this is indeed a chain from China and I went during the soft opening period. You can tell they try because the place is really small so they try to accommodate your party but I do not recommend you to go if you have more than 4 in your party. Also it's not a romantic place so probably not a first date place either. Fish has two options with small or large portions. They made it sound like that you should order small for one person and large for two. I however recommend large for even one person unless you are on a diet because there really isn't enough fish pieces. The rice is not wuchang rice despite what they say because it's my favorite rice in China. Overall I'm happy it's here in the Bay area but it's not so good that I'd miss it. This read more

It's conveniently located on B Street, which has become a popular destination for Downtown San Mateo as it is part of the closed section for pedestrians only. Interior is VERY clean. I almost feel bad spilling spicy red soup on the white tables when eating. The chairs are awesome to crack your lower back on too. Definitely try it out one time. The food itself is soup, spicy and non-spicy, with fish, vegetables, tofu, noodles, and other things all combined into one pot. You can choose to share a pot together but I'd opt for 1 pot per person because it is mostly soup. The menu is pretty straight forward to order from, with English and Chinese options. You scan a QR code (pretty standard nowadays in restaurants). We ordered a Classic Spicy Fish Soup and Old Pot Sauerkraut Fish Soup. Both Larges. We also finished both. They give you endless white rice if you love to carb up. The Spicy is more of a numbing type of spicy but it is a good kind of feeling. Both pots tasted good to me and my partner! They give you quite a bit of noodles and tofu skin, which I'm really happy about. Service is okay. They actually do not fill your water; you have to do it yourself. The water station is right by the counter in the front. I feel like this restaurant could cater more to the takeout crowd, as I see the signs for Fantuan in the front. I'm just glad their lowest tip is 15% as a choice; I know Downtown San Mateo can be higher than usual for tipping due to location. No complaints on service, pretty standard and straight forward. Really happy there is a sauerkraut fish place open in San mateo. We've been several times already. It's great to eat in store or as take out. Come early or expect a wait, particularly in the evening. The service is prompt though, so the wait is usually not too bad even if you do have to wait. They have some non spicy options that are just as tasty. They have a non spicy sauerkraut version as well as a tomato soup base one! Both are very good! We always get the snakehead fish upgrade bc basa filet we can buy in the grocery store, and if we are going to be eating out, why not?! I really like the texture of the snakehead fish. For a large, you can choose 4 sides to add in. For a small, you can choose 2 sides. They already come with tofu, so no need to get that unless you really want extra tofu.
