They were staying at a midtown hotel and I live in Inwood. They were open to restaurant suggestions, but when my friend said his wife wanted to see Washington Heights, I knew we were going to Cañave. I have been to about every bar/restaurant in Inwood and its immediate environs. There are many good places, but I tend to prefer places where the music is not overbearing, you are not jammed in like sardines in a can, and service is exceptionally good. To make a long story shorter, we arrived at 7:30 p.m. and left at 11:30 p.m.! We talked, ate, and drank the night away. I suggested the shrimp ceviche, and we split two orders of it. It was fabulous and a quintessential example of example of Latin Fusion. My friend ordered steak and his wife, at my suggestion, ordered the roasted chicken dish - which I seem to never recall the name of - and rice and beans, and I did the same. This dish has recently become my favorite in the neighborhood. In fact, it has become one of my all-time favorite dishes. The drinks were incredibly good, as I savored my favorite, the delicious coconut margaritas. To top it off, the homemade flan the best I have ever had. I would be remiss were I not to compliment the staff. They were extremely professional, attending to our every need and thoroughly explaining items on the menu (I had forgotten the ceviche part of the shrimp dish, which they immediately filled in!). The easy listening music is superb and encourages conversation. It was nonstop talking, laughing, eating and laughing. We talked about old classmates, teachers, the school, etc. We caught up on the gaps in the years that we had not seen each other. In truth, it was an experience that could have only happened at Cañave. I highly recommend this gem of a restaurant!

We were so excited to see chocolate fondue with seasonal fruits and a red wine poached pear dish. We ordered both and admired the cozy, warmly lit space. The chocolate fondue was great and the poached pear was okay, we ended up sending it back because it wasn't what we expected, no biggie tho shit happens. Upon looking around that's when we noticed one of the chefs making a disgusting mistake. He was wearing the same gloves he used to wash dirty dishes to prepare foods we and the entire restaurant ate. Not only that but he was also eating the fruits he cut with those same gloves! Did I eat the germs off someone else's plate while he was washing the dishes? Probably! It's really a shame and a disgrace to this beautiful restaurant. To top it all off the server was also taking shots on the job and seemed to get more hammered with each shot. I ordered the prosecco, and we tried the chocolate fondue and a pear dessert. The bartender took our order; he told us that the chocolate fondue came with seasonal fruits, which he told us came with bananas, strawberries, and apples. When he gave us the desserts, the fruits on the plate were nothing, he told us. It had mango, apple, and figs (my friend is allergic to mango), so she was only able to eat only the 5 little apple pieces that were on the plate, and the figs were very mushy. The pear dessert was not so great. So I asked the bartender if he could exchange the pear dessert for more fruits for the chocolate fondue. Again, it was random different fruits; the second round of fruits was figs, oranges, and grapefruit. Cordial is small, so you can see the chefs cooking in the kitchen. With that being said, you can see one of the chefs washing dishes with gloves on and then proceeding to eat a mango with the same glove and then preparing the meals he cleaned dishes and ate with. It was so unsanitary. I just got disgusted and disappointed quickly after watching him. The sad part is that I and my friend were super happy to find a chill place to go and hang out near where we reside, but unfortunately I'm not sure I'll go back.

The sweet plantain was a nice contrast to add between the savory meat and seafood. The Crazy Roll had salmon tempura, cucumber, sweet plantain and avocado. This one was interesting because the salmon was good but I was a bit over the sweet plantain by this point because it pretty much took over the simplicity of the salmon. Afterthought: All throughout the rolls the cucumber had such a nice crunch to it and the avocado was soft and ripe. Each container had a nice glaze over the rolls and a bit in the bottom of the container. The chicken teriyaki was honestly was my favorite one out of the three. Mainly because it was crispy chicken. Which added a nice twist to a traditional chicken teriyaki. All three are served with a delicious seaweed salad, fresh SPICY ginger because, babyy this ginger was HOT and a side of soy sauce. We did ask to sit outside and was denied because we were told we didn't make reservation, even though there were lots of empty tables. The server mistakenly served red wine and then Champagne instead of Chardonnay when asked for it. Instead of saying "we don't have Chardonnay," she should have simply informed the customer. After our meal, we stacked our plates and placed them aside to signal the server that we were finished. We endured a 30-minute wait for our bill, which was an unpleasant experience. Additionally, we desired to depart promptly due to the excessive loud music, which was getting on our nerves. Definitely not our place to go eat out; very disappointed. Oh, and food was okay, that's all I can say.
