Wow. The Fitz is an absolutely amazing restaurant and the best way to cap off a day of Copper Country Cruising. If you want to eat on Lake Superior, you can't get any closer, as the waves are lapping on the shore closer to your table than the host stand. Check the sunset time and make a reservations BEFORE you leave Houghton/Hancock/Calumet, that wall you'll be guaranteed the best sunset you've ever seen over the greatest Lakes of them all. There was a MASSIVE beer and bourbon list that is brought to you on a clipboard. It would have taken me longer to figure out what I wanted to drink than it did for me to drive there from Houghton. Luckily, the waitstaff is very well versed in the menu and they can even help you with pairings. The menu was a little smaller than I would have liked, but that slight inconvenience was offset by the amazing food that they had on it. I didn't get the chance to try the ribs, but they looked absolutely amazing. I instead had NY Strip Steak which exceeded my already high expectations. You will not be disappointed by the food and it will be a highlight of your trip through the Keweenaw. I can't recommend going to The Fitz strongly enough. It's hard to find good BBQ in the Midwest. I know...I've been trying for years! Who would think I would find it on the shore of Lake Superior? Our party of four (and a toddler) tried all the BBQ items on the menu. The Pulled Pork was tender, juicy and flavorful. The Ribs were perfectly cooked, rich and meaty. The Brisket was perfectly cooked with a fantastic bark. my favorite side was the Mac and Cheese. It is also worth mentioning that Fitzgerald's has a huge selection of Beer and Cider. If you use a wheelchair, access is a little tricky. You have to enter through the kitchen (which was spotless, by the way) and then go up one step in the dining room, so make sure you let them know when you make your reservation. Even though it's a hassle getting in, it's worth it and we will definitely be back! read more

We had been talking for a couple of years about staying here and eating in their restaurant before it actually happened. It's located on the tip of a peninsula within a peninsula, and there is not direct route there that doesn't take you out of the way. That being said, it was worth going out of our way to get here and seeing the rural towns along the way that are trapped in time. The room is very simple - two queen / double beds, a tv, a window with a great view of Lake Superior, and a bathroom with a shower. The one thing I would add to the bathroom would be a small shelf or two for placing toiletries. There is nowhere to place anything at all. This is not designed for staying more than a night in, as there isn't much to do in the area and most people, like us, only came to eat in the restaurant. The food was solid and we sat in the bar by choice, turning down the table offered, as the bar seemed more congenial and cozy. We had some cocktails and a bottle of good wine, and a couple of appetizers that the bartender warned would fill us up, and he was right - we ordered a salad and two apps and were full. The pork belly was particularly amazing, flavorful, soft and crispy. WARNING: PASTRY RANT!! We had apple pie for dessert, and that was the one disappointing thing. It was served cold, with no option given of being warmed. It should have been, as the flavors would have benefitted. And warmed in an oven, not a microwave...! One other complaint about the pie is the crust itself - it was under baked by several minutes. This isn't entirely their fault, as it seems to be the way people actually like their pastry up here - the region, from here all the way up the north shore of Lake Superior, is known for pasties, which are little hand-formed pies made with a variety of sweet, but also savory fillings. And, true to their name, they are terribly pasty, under-baked blobs of ick that are an offense to my French pastry-trained senses. The easy solution in my mind would be to just keep them in the oven and only use real butter and lard for the crust!! It drives me mad. I think I'm going to continue this rant in about ten more reviews of various places I frequent in hopes of planting the seed somewhere for someone to try baking them longer to create a crisp crust!! Maybe even try using a better base crust recipe to begin with - Dorie Greenspan has a great one called "good for almost anything pie dough" ... google that (it's posted on several sites and blogs) & start there, keep your ingredients cold, chill the pie well before putting it into a hot oven, with the baking sheet heating up along with the oven too, throw the pies and pasties on that, and actually bake it to a deep golden brown. Set the oven to 450f and turn it down to 375 after you put it in. Check it after about 25 minutes, once the crust has set and allows you to open the doors, and then keep on baking. Don't stop until it's browned, crispy and delicious!! If it's pale and pasty, please, for the love of flaky and crispy deliciousness, keep it in the oven!! And then, when people order a slice, reheat it on a hot pizza stone for five minutes instead of serving it cold. I'm sorry, but not sorry for this pie / pasty rant. You're all crazy to bakers outside of your region, trust me. This insanity must be stopped. END OF PASTRY RANT All this to say, that one day, I'll come back to this place. I had the fortune of seeing my first aurora borealis over Lake Superior late at night after dinner. Around 10:30pm, a strange green gas was glowing on the horizon over the lake. At first I thought it was a distant city's lights, but there isn't anything that direction of that size that would would create that glow. As the evening progressed, I became fascinated with watching it from my darkened room. The glow spread across the entire lake and grew in intensity. And then, at around 12:30am, it began to dance and pulse. I had never seen anything like it. It was like a laser show minus the soundtrack, and I really wished I had a good track to play to go along with it, and some good pot. I walked down to the beach and stood in the darkness, alone and feeling very small as the show moved overhead. It was extraordinary - truly one of the top ten great things I've witnessed in my life. I've always wanted to see it, and I'm sure it was a dull show compared to what one would see in Norway or Iceland, but it stirred my senses and was quite surreal to see, and now I want to travel and see more of them! read more

Fantastic! For starters - my children said the best fries they have ever had . Beyond the fries, the pork belly French toast blew me away. So, so, so, good!!! It was candy to me and should actually be a dessert. The burger was actually cooked medium rare when asked for medium rare. We also had the Brussel sprout and bleu cheese salad and the curry lentils. The preparation of the latter was beautiful. Chicken tenders for the youngest was real food as well. Brisket sandwich and BBQ burger were excellent as well. We were looking for a nice place with good food and heard Fitzgeralds was the place to go. Easy 40 minute drive from Houghton. We were a little early for our reservation so we checked out the falls just up the road and we're entertained by the hundred or so white tailed deer browsing right in the village in practically every yard. When we got seated in the restaurant we were greeted by a very friendly waitress that took our drink order immediately and gave us a chance to check out the menu. The menu is small, just a one sheeter; but that just gives them the opportunity to concentrate on getting everything just right. I had the brisket, my wife had the salmon, our daughter had the Nashville hot chicken and our son had the garlic udon noodles with brisket. Everything was great. Service, drinks, food and the atmosphere. We really had a great dining experience here and will most definitely be back. I was very impressed that they served Paulaner Hefe Weissen...the tall bottle! It went marvelously with the Jaeger Schnitzel, a pork cutlet with a creamy mushroom sauce and spaetzels. A group of 9 adults and 1 child including myself attempted to eat here at about 430. We figured ourselves lucky because it was pretty much empty and we would have a good seat. When approaching the hostess station were told any table over 8 HAS to have a reservation? Which seems a bit ridiculous. They seriously turned away a table to 10? Can they honestly say they're popular enough to do that? I personally have never eaten there before(along with a few others in our group) so I can't comment on the food, I do have family who works in the kitchen and I trust them, but I will not be returning. read more

Where to begin... This is truly an amazing place. This is a destination, and it's worth the trip whether you're coming from Calumet or Chicago. The story of The Fitz is it was re-opened by two enterprising young men who decided they wanted to start a business that they themselves would want to go to. With blind ambition they opened a restaurant, and have tried to steadily grow and improve every year. And it's taken off, been accepted by locals and travelers, and has become a fixture in the Keweenaw. You need a reservation here, for sure. Perhaps I'll make a quick list of my favorite things about The Fitz. - It's right on the shore of Lake Superior. You can enjoy a nightcap on the deck while watching the sunset. - They make competition-level BBQ that you can't find outside of Texas or Carolina. - They have a beer and whisky menu that rivals any in the Midwest. - The staff, especially Mike and Marc, are incredibly knowledgable and passionate. My one criticism is this: they used to have a really great vegetarian sandwich on the menu (for those with a lighter appetite or trying to eat healthier) that was amazing. I think it was called the deer country or something. I wonder what happened to that great menu item. I know it was a big hit. I hope they bring it back. read more

I'm an extreme beer, bourbon and whiskey geek and this place is possibly the most impressive in Michigan for these three categories. First, they often have Founder's KBS in stock, which blows my mind. I work across the street from Founder's and I can rarely get it in Grand Rapids; it's easier for me to drive ten hours and get it here. Second, they often have Bourbon County Stout by Goose Island. Again, you really can't get this in Michigan unless you're in the mafia. Third, they have exotic Japanese whiskey you might not see anywhere else such as Yamizaki, Yoichi and Hakushu. I also had some George Stagg 140 proof bourbon that is super rare. If you don't know what George Stagg bourbon is, consider yourself a Walmart shopper and just go to Applebee's and have a Velveeta grilled cheese on Wonder Bread and a Captain Morgan's with diet coke. Plus, they have super food, an awesome atmosphere and the best deck on Lake Superior in Michigan to bask in the sun on while you enjoy your forbidden fruit beverages. Normally, I don't like to expose my favorite watering holes, but after coming up this way for 30 years, I am confident 99% of Americans are too lazy to travel to a place this remote. When I go here, most people are so lame they won't sit outside on the awesome deck unless it's over 70 degrees, even on a perfect sunny day. That lethargy makes me a happy guy because I get to enjoy it for myself without a mob scene. read more

My wife got dirty rice with hush puppies. Simply fantastic. I ordered the pulled pork. They definitely know how to smoke some good meats. Service was great. The outside area is awesome as you can view Lake Superior but no food service outside. This seems to be a common Michigan problem? Since you can smoke outside can't have food? Also, found it odd that most places won't allow dogs outside. Again, seems to be Michigan law? Not sure. There were some locals there that order food to go and ate outside anyways. Fight the system. I hate this place, to put it simply in a nutshell. My friends and I had a few extra charges on the bill that was unexpected. We got charged an upcharge on salad that somebody didn't have to make since it was an inconvenience. The ribeye steaks, the server said was on sale, they were not on sale. If you're a snob, in the best sense, talk to Mark. He has some off the menu bottles he will sell to the devoted who will pay. Trolls will find beers here we kill for in our towns. The view is incomparable, unless from your own home. Expanse of Lake Superior with some coast. Seating is seriously limited. Reserve!! during prime dinner time. Bar has six seats so don't expect to hang out there while waiting. Menu: Lots to choose from. We got wings with sauce in the side. Their BBQ is really the best. I ordered Warm Veggie Bowl with tempeh. Excellent. Tempeh was steamed/cooked to take away bitterness. Served with rice, kale and mild tahini dressing complimented with sauerkraut and pickled onions. Perfect blend and so filling (I could only eat half) for $10. Hubby got ribs. Smoked. OMG. Someone here likes their vinegar for such things as pickled veggies and Carolina coleslaw (do NOT order if you expect cabbage swimming in mayo - that's NOT Carolina style), but the ribs are just smoked and NOT Carolina vinegary, which is a welcome flavor. They are not oversalted, so won't cause heart palpitations after eating. Just smoked, moist, flavorful meat that falls from the bone. The BBQ sauce on the side is so good; the two compliment one another. Service was outstanding. People of Eagle River are fortunate. It is fundamentally unfair that a restaurant so good is in such a remote location. This would be your go-to favorite restaurant no matter where you lived. Every meal you'll order will be great. Don't try to decide which. Just go numerous times and order something new each time. Make sure to get smoked something. The most difficult part is saving room for dessert.....BUT do save room. My favorite restaurant in the Keweenaw continues to impress. A favorite for anniversary dinners for my wife and I for 17 years, the best of the old menu (pecan encrusted walleye and fresh Lake Superior fish. In particular) and the impressive addition of the smoked meats and dishes really satisfies. On our most recent visit, we started with a French Canadian inspired poutine appetizer with added smoked brisket. Incredible in every way. That appetizer could have been enough of a meal for the two of us. We topped it by sharing the smoked meat sampler platter with ribs, brisket, and pulled pork with two sides. Calling it a table of meat and sides would have been more appropriate. The smoked brisket is particularly good consistently. We took a full meal home with us on this trip. Great, great food and consistent quality for what counts. Service is good but get reservations as they have a strong reputation. There is bar seating if you can't get reservations, but a table is better. The view of *the* Lake is spectacular (it's right on the Lake Superior shoreline) I don't drink, but their bar selection is also quite remarkable and worth a look if you have the interest. A must eat place if you're in the Keweenaw. The ambiance is pretty great (directly looking at L. Superior from the dining room) as is the wonderful staff. The food is pretty excellent. The BBQ is incredibly well done, and the other menu items are great. Def recommend reservations. You'll be there a couple hours so if you like to speed through your meal and generally be 'Murican and not savor a nice dinner out, you might get annoyed. We were on a road trip through the Northern Midwest in June, 2016. By the time we hit Fitzgerald's (and stayed at Eagle River Inn), we had been on the road for ten days. This place was such a welcome retreat. We checked in late, but the owner (not sure which) reserved us a table at about 15 minutes before the designated closing time. The craft beer, whisky and drink selections were amazing. I ordered the beef brisket and topped it with the Carolina coleslaw, and also the pickled onions that come on the side. Sigh...so delicious. My husband ordered a burger and my son ordered the mac and cheese. This was no ordinary mac and cheese--it was so good my husband ordered it the next night. My beef brisket was mouthwatering goodness which my son and husband tried, and we all ordered it the next night when we ate here again! We also ordered the pickled vegetables. They were delicious and the presentation was great as they were served in a wide-mouth mason jar which I found charming. I had an Aviator (gin drink on the menu) to drink the first evening and the second evening I ordered an Orange Bourbon Press which is not on the drink menu, but made by the bartender at my request, and it was great. My husband tried one of the craft beers, but the choices are so extensive I don't remember which one. Service was consistently excellent--as we dined there two times and had different wait staff each night. Dessert was a chocolate peanut butter pie for me and chocolate layer cake for my son and husband. Easily our best meal during out lengthy road trip through the Midwest. The atmosphere is casual, cozy and the view of Lake Superior (especially at sunset) is unmatched with any other restaurant you will find in the UP. Even if you cannot get into the restaurant, buy a drink and sit on the back deck. The sun sets directly outside the windows of this restaurant! The only bad thing I can say about Fitzgerald's is that it is too far away from our home. read more

No non-reservation tables were available - in fact we were told they do not keep tables for walk ins. Maybe that is something that should be posted on the website.
