I was excited for Five & Hoek because it looked like they did coffee right. By that I mean less American and more European. I was right about that. Good cappuccino. Good cortado. But it was lacking any atmosphere. No seating. It was a grab and go coffee spot down an alleyway. The alleyway and hard to find aspect is great... if there is a payoff. Which there wasn't. I have been wanting to try this place for a while and it was really nothing special. I didn't find their drink offerings, very enticing and they really tasted horrible. I'm going be honest with you they were absolutely absolutely horrible These drinks were probably the worst I've ever had the service was absolutely slow and the prices are high so I wouldn't go back. 10/10 coffee 1/10 service Rude girl on staff. Loved the coffee then my family and i met this one 8/7/2022. She wouldn't even make eye contact with myself, or my elderly family member ordering coffee. After a couple seconds of her looking behind her while we were trying to order she rolled her eyes, refused to answer any questions, didn't smile, at one point she turned around again while we were ordering-completely turned her back to us for a good 3 minutes or so. She was the rudest individual I've ever met which is a shame because i thought this would be my new go to spot. Just moved to Wheaton from Chicago. Will never come back because of her. Awesome coffee selection- their seasonal coffees have some unique flavors that are worth checking out!

We were in the area and I wanted to grab a cup of tea to warm up. It turns out Cafe K'Tizo is closed on Sunday, so I mapped us to the oddly named Five & Hoek in downtown Wheaton. Parking can be a pain because of all the construction in the area, but the inside is spacious and trendy. Not family friendly like Cafe K'Tizo, but geared more to a younger crowd I think. The menu is similar to other coffee shops, but they had an interesting sounding drink with blueberries and lemon sparkling water, which was incidentally out. They were also out of the "goat" dish my in-laws wanted. To top it off, they were "out" of mugs, so they had to serve our coffees in disposable cups, but it was Sunday afternoon so not a big deal. Anyway, the cappuccino I ordered was superb. I enjoyed it. My in-laws were also impressed with the latte they ordered. Good coffee. :) read more

I had the delight to be a part of their "super secret sample group" for their new Calming collection. A very innovative approach to a rather bland segment of the coffee market, decaf. They boast different craft decaf blends, 75%/50%/25% caffeine blends. Never have I ever experienced different levels of caffeine in this way. After participating in the group, my favorite decaf blend they have is the Columbia Sugarcane. I brought it to my family's get together, and everyone was raving about "how good the decaf was" and "this tastes caffeinated" Besides the innovative line of beans, they serve a great latte and delicious pastries. They're also tucked away in the cutest alley. Can you get any better than that? Definitely take the time to come here and support a local business who hits it out of the park! read more

Some of the best coffee in the area! I've never disliked any drip coffee prepared there and they rotate the roast pretty frequently. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable too. I walked up and thought the outside of the coffee shop was cute with the tables out in front giving customers the opportunity to sit either inside or out. Entering the cafe I went in the afternoon around 3:00 o'clock and there were a lot of younger teenagers in the coffee shop than I was expecting to be in there. However I made my way to the counter to inspect the menu and I made the choice of a Hot Hazelnut Latte and when it was given to me by the barista there was an adorable coffee art. Which honestly after my stressful day made my day a lot better. The hazelnut flavor was in attendance but it wasn't overpowering which was great. I always thought good cafes only existed in downtown Chicago but it is nice to now know that I can get that result out in the suburbs as well. read more

Spent most of a recent rainy Monday working from this shop, because Yelp told me it's a good spot for getting some work done. Yelp once again didn't let me down! There isn't a sign outside that says "Five and Hoek," but follow the "River Roasters" sign and you'll find this shop easily! The barista who rang me out was super chill when I took a minute to find my card. I love not being rushed, bless! I ordered an iced coffee and double chocolate chip muffin. The iced coffee was pretty large, but I still got another because I can never have just one cup. I gave into temptation ordering the muffin, which was also large, and was totally worth it. Y'all are gonna hate this word, but it was moist and perfect and that's my breakfast/snack recommendation. It went well with the coffee! There was also plenty of seating available inside, both at the bar area and at tables, and plenty of outlets as well. WE LOVE A COFFEE SHOP WITH OUTLETS! PRAISE. As I said, this particular day was rainy -- I'm talking DOWNPOURING, so unfortunately the WiFi was being temperamental for quite a few of us in here. However, the barista was exceptionally cool and restarted the router for us lil workers. It continued to be a bit difficult, but truly I'm going to assume that's because of the weather, and technology is a butt sometimes. Nice little place in the heart of downtown Wheaton. Their coffee is good while the beer flavored one is awesome. They have some good food as well. Not quite a full service restaurant, a cafe with some good food options. The place is clean and quiet when needing to get some work done or meeting someone. I like the rustic look and seems like they are trying to repurpose an older space which adds some nice character to the whole experience. Staff is friendly and helpful. Definitely a great alternative to the busy Starbucks across the street. read more

It pains me to update this review because, as you can see on my first review, I clearly LOVED this place. However, it has completely changed, and not for the better. For one, the location is different. It is down an alleyway past what appears to be other business' garbage cans. There is hardly any seating, and NO customer bathrooms. Seriously? How are you supposed to sit at a coffee shop and not even have the option to use a bathroom (mind you: Covid restrictions have eased at the time of this review, and the person working literally said, "you can use the bathroom at Starbucks across the street."). The bourbon spiced latte is still there, but the price increased significantly while the quality went down significantly. Overall, "disappointment" is the word that comes to mind now when I think of this place. It's a shame too because I was really looking forward to frequenting this establishment again after not being able to go out much from the pandemic (I also used to happily drive over an hour to go here). This is our new go to coffee spot in downtown Wheaton. The hubby and I recently moved just a few blocks away and even though we have free coffee in the lobby of our apartment, we still take the walk over here to grab a cup of their local brew. Tables can be a bit hard to come by especially with some college students bunkered down cranking out papers (hey I mean we all have done that!), but people are friendly and typically other customers will even be 'Wheaton Neighbor-Friendly' and let you share their table :) Although their bags of coffee beans are pricey (around $16), we still will buy a bag here and there to have at home so that we can have some fresh River City Roasters brew before we jet off to the train & to work. Loved the maple almond latte even more - outstanding flavor and velvet foam. Blown away by this local gem as I had been missing really good coffee from home in Seattle - can't believe this exists in Wheaton! "It's not their fault I have no tolerance for children and entitled adults & tweens." This is what I had to repeatedly utter while coming here on quite possibly the busiest Friday night at any coffee shop anywhere. I'm talking ass-to-ankles packed in and a line out the door like they it was the second coming of Dumb Starbucks (See also: http://la.eater.com/archives/2014/02/10/dozens_wait_for_over_an_hour_at_dumb_starbucks.php) So, with taking into account how terrible I am with tolerating most humans and leaving out my feelings on sharing personal space with anything that isn't a cat or other super cute animal, I have to say that I think River City Roasters is a 5-star win. Based on product, LOVE. The Green Hornet matcha latte was beyond bananas. And had the line to order not been a good 15-minute wait on top of what was probably at least 20-minutes of orders ahead of mine, I would have absolutely ordered a second large-sized serving immediately after trying my first sip. My guy got their dark roast and fell deep, deep in love with life after only moments earlier I'd detected more than a slight tinge of sleep in his emerald eyes. It's one magic pour-over they're percolating here. Now, I think there was some sort of special event taking place on the night we came in because they had two charitable vendors with tables up front selling beaded necklaces and T-shirts and there were signs about how much $ it costs to get food and clean water to people in less fortunate places of the world... which, since this place is in Wheaton, means just about everywhere else. There were about a zillion people here of ALL ages, including a number of unattended stumbling toddles, which got my goat to no end, but again, not RCR's fault their patron's don't feel it necessary to keep and eye on their spawn. Speaking of Wheaton, it's a super church-y church town, that up until recently was also a dry town, which is probably why having a really great coffee shop with stellar live music and friendly vibe late on Friday night means this place gets packed to the gills when there aren't many quality bars within stumbling distance. Aaand speaking of church-y, based on the very brief description on their website, I believe this roastery (sp?) has some sort of Catholic affiliation, but you wouldn't get that sense from going there. Or at least I didn't, and trust me, I'd be the first person to be struck down from the heavens or burn up upon entering if it were the case. Basically, this god-less heathen approves. read more

I seriously think my cool level goes up 97% just by hanging out at this place. I'm not sure what it is exactly, because I frequent many coffee shops, but it's just a really cool place to hang out in. The vibe is upbeat and busy, but laid back at the same time. They have a bike hanging on the wall as decoration which is neet. Small tables for chatting with friends line the shop with large tables used as communal work stations in the back. Not to mention a few comfy chairs as well. Great locale downtown Wheaton with superior service - yay I'm a fan! These baristas have art talent that's for sure. I enjoyed my first pumpkin spiced latte of the season here while posting up to get some work done, and boy was it FANCY. My cream designed latte flower was well done folks. I really like River City Roasters. Only problem, a ton of other people do too. I'm usually here in late afternoon and it can definitely get pretty crowded. Bad service. After I noticed several customers who placed orders after me get their drinks, I approached the counter to ask if my drink was still in the line up. It was not. The barista replied he would make my order, and then I waited several more minutes while he proceeded to make 3 more drinks before making mine. I'm a reasonable customer, but I was disappointed that not a single person apologized for the error. To make matters worse, watching the barista sniff espresso shots before throwing them into drinks is not a good look. read more

OK, so the last time I was here the place was packed and there was no where for me to sit. So I got a cup of Joe and hit the road Jack and didn't look back. It was a good cup of coffee, I drink mine black and typically unfancy, although I do enjoy some good espresso on occasion. I wanted to give this place another try, but between trains crossing at main street (I start heading east or west when that happens) and a very real lack of parking it was weeks before I was able to get back there. I was at Mariano's earlier in the day and had a big, Dark Chocolate Chip Cookie that was just begging for a good cup of coffee to go with it. I listened and even though I had to park a block and a half away, I went and got my cookie the coffee it so richly deserved. I left the cookie in the car with the idea that the place would be crowded and I would just take off. The place was almost empty. So, now I was in a quandry... I had appointments and should probably get going but I didn't have to hurry... should I get a fancy coffee? Maybe an espresso doppio? And then I looked down and there it was.. staring back at me... Monkey Bread! And get this! I was able to get a diet version... They had a regular and a small.. I got the small.. that makes it a diet version, right? The poor cookie, completely forgotten! I ordered a regular coffee to go with my (low-cal) Monkey Bread. So, ok.. I like this place, it's got a little of the too cool for school vibe, but they make a very good cup of coffee.. the two times that I've been here I would say.. a good step up from Starbucks. I wish they were more convenient and that I knew when the right times to go in are... it's a hassle to walk down there, or park far away if you aren't sure whether you will get a seat I have to admit the Monkey Bread was really good and I think maybe I was fooling myself with the diet thingy. When I got back to the car, the Dark Chocolate Chip Cookie was obviously in distress... I promised to make it some espresso when we got home later that day. read more

A very good indie coffee oasis in the Chicago burbs Pros: -Coffee- On-site roasting, and in my last visit to the area, I had 3 drinks that were delicious improvements on the coffee I've had in prior visits -High quality milk -Space- The remodel in the past year or so from the prior tenant has allowed for more seating space -Service- Good service from nice people Things to improve: - Consistency - Lots of variety in skill level between baristas, although this has improved a lot from the past. Hoping they continue the upward trend I've been noticing. - Cleanliness - Crumbs and spills every visit. Even the coffee bar can be littered with dishes from past cuppings. General maintenance and attention to cleanliness definitely needs more attention and improvement. - Pastry - The muffin I had here tasted like a week old Costco muffin and the other stuff I've had hasn't been much better. I love the DIY ethic here as a whole, but the pastry needs work. 3.5 total. If River City Roasters pays more attention to the details--especially cleaning up after inconsiderate patrons who think mom's around to wipe up after their mess--this would be 4 stars easy. read more

This is the "coolest" spot in Wheaton. I know I'm not cool enough to hang here but the employees are friendly and don't seem to mind that I'm bringing the room down. Their coffee and chais are great. I've only liked coffee for a few years so I don't know enough about it to have a discerning pallet or be an expert on the matter but I do know that my taste buds enjoy it all. They make their own syrups and always seem to have different ones so it's worth a regular stop in here. River City is pretty much the only reason I ever come downtown! read more
