Soupy weather is upon us and I was so excited to try Five Grains! They specialize in making noodles with five different colors. The menu was extensive and had a lot of options. If you're not a noodle person, they also have rice dishes like fried rice or beef with rice. Once you order at the counter, you can take a seat and they bring the noodles to you. I went with the spicy fish fillet noodles. The broth was very good, with a spicy and savory flavor. It came with lots of chunks of fish fillet and had veggies in it as well. The noodles texture was very chewy and on the thinner side. The texture held up really well throughout and the portion was great for the price. The mala noodle soup with flank steak was definitely spicier and saltier, and it had beef intestines in it. If you're into intestines, this could be a good choice for you. Late dinner on a Thursday night. A cool little place, specializing in noodle soups made with five types of grains. I ordered the 5 grain signature noodle soup with fish fillets. We also had the flavored smashed cucumber. The cucumber was real good with that had kind of a light picking with asian spices. Real good while the cucumbers still had b good crunch. The noodle soups were outstanding. The temperature was really hot coming. The size was also huge. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the flavors in the soup were perfect. It was with broth had hints of fish but it was not fishy at all. The heat was also very interesting. It had a heat that builds in your mouth but is does not make your bread sweat. Definitely spicy but I would call it intentional heat. Good food and good service. Was not real busy but don't let that fool you. read more

Delicious soup in ginormous bowls as big as your head! We tried the shrimp, fish pieces, beef, and flank steak.... So much flavor!! The bowls come out piping hot, so take your time digging in, and we love the crunchy chickpeas that garnished to the top of each bowl. read more

Really happy to find a soup location with a lot of variety. Staff were very friendly and happy to give recommendations. Started with the kimchi, smashed cucumbers and spring rolls. Kimchi was soooo good. Perfect flavor to heat ratio. Smashed cucumbers needed a bit more flavor or to be marinated a little longer. But very fresh. Spring rolls were ok. Nothing special They recommended the fives grains soup with fish pieces. It was very good. Broth was flavorful, fish wasn't overcooked. My husband got the beef soup that was spicy. I ordered fried rice and the rice was hard and the peas were dried out. It was a forgettable dish if not for the hard to chew rice and peas. I forgot what my wife ordered but she didn't like it. I thought it was fine except for what I think was mustard greens in the soup. My daughter's soup was good, but she thought the beef tasted funny. I thought it was fine but all the pieces had visible fatty chunks on them. She ordered without vegetables though. Other than my wife and daughter's displeasure, I didn't think their dishes were bad. Oh. My. Goodness. I can't believe this little place exists in Dayton OH right down from my house! Truly an incredible noodle experience. We had to google most things on the menu because of the language difference with the gentleman behind the counter, but I seriously think I'd be blown away with anything I ordered here. I saw so many photos of the pumpkin cakes that we had to try them. I've never had anything like them but they were delicious! The noodle soup portions were massive! Since it's new, I wanted to try it. Stopped in for carryout on my way home from work, did not call ahead. I ordered their five grain noodle soup having no idea what would be in it. The one thing I found a little offputting as a non-oriental person was that the menu gave very little detail about what was in each item. When I got home and opened it up, I enjoyed my meal. It was enough for a smallish meal and then a larger meal. The next day five grain noodle soup had sliced green onions in it. (I stirred it better) It had pieces of a white fish, and several things I wasn't exactly sure what they were, but it was mild and tasty . I will try it again when I am feeling adventurous and pick something else I would rate them at 3 1/2 stars, but since that is not an option I rounded up and that is just mostly because the menu is unclear . read more

Authentic Chinese noodles. My husband got the mala noodles and added beef. It was delicious but too spicy for me unless i had a cold. I got the shrimp, and it was also delicious. Neither had much meat, which is perfect for me. I gave my husband half my shrimp. His beef was small and tender, with no fat or surprises. Lots of noodles in both and the bowls are humongous but can have left today. The flavors of the broth were soooo good. Highly recommend. There is some seating inside. The menu is mostly soup and soup-related items. There are some sides, like gyoza (which were amazing), eggrolls, and some of the best kimchi I have ever had. It was very fresh with a bright, amazing flavor, not too spicy and pickled just enough for a great texture. The main dish I got held up well for leftovers the next day. There are descriptions of the items on banners on the walls which was kind of helpful as the descriptions on the menu are rather brief. Nice and clean too with clean bathrooms as well. I am beyond excited! As a a New York City Chinatown transplant, diverse noodle soup options are....limited. First, do not expect another pho noodle shop. That is not the kind of noodle soup they serve. Second, their chicken soup, do not imagine chicken noodle (because we are Chinese variety). The chicken noodle was immensely rich in flavor. The noodles they use here are a perfect compliment for it. My husband loved it (and he is harder to please when it comes to Chinese cuisine) and my picky Americanized son ate it all and than drank the broth because it was so good. Usually when my sons volleyball team doesn't win; we go for sushi. He wasn't in the mood to go out, and asked for Kroger sushi. A plan was hatched to get him his sushi on the way home and then have a lunch date. After a little debate between Nanyea and Five Grains, we decided to try something new. I've been waiting for this and was very excited. The atmosphere is nice, clean and well maintained. You order at the counter and then they bring your food. I ordered the spicy soup with beef and the oyster pancake. My husband got the Five Graisn soup and friend fish appetizer. I think the fried fish was probably the best thing we ordered. The mala soup with beef had *some* spice, but was not what I wild consider spicy. It had a little of the numbing feeling from the peppercorns, but not much. I really enjoyed the texture of the noodles though, which is important with noodle soups. If you don't tolerate spice well, this isn't the choice for you. The oyster pancake was not what I expected. The person at the counter did warn us that it's pork and shrimp, which was fine. I just expected it to be more of a pancake, but it was more like a flat puffy egg roll that was battered. Definitely difficult to explain, but I took pictures. My husbands Five Grains soup was tasty, but not very flavorful. It has white fish which was good. Overall we enjoyed the food, but with so many other more flavorful options, I don't know if we'll return. Although, I've read that the cucumber salad and cold pork noodles are really good, so maybe we have to go and give those a try. I also had one of the drinks out of the cooler that was good. It was an orange peel and plum juice. I was very disappointed when I left it on the table when we left. I'd say it was a solid 3.5, but that's not an option. Did you ever check out a new place, full of all the hope and positive vibes in the world (or at least your corner of it?!?) and it just didn't live up to your expectations? Yep, that happened here to me on my first visit. I'll have to come back and re-order something more... exciting (?) than what I got, because I wasn't as "wowed" by what I ordered as I hoped to be. There's a lot to discover on their menu; prepare ahead like we DIDN'T... They'll try to steer you away from the HOT stuff, and it's my OWN fault for taking their advise and choosing a "safer" soup (5 grains noodle soup with chicken). We also ordered corn noodle and tomato noodle soups. Not bad at all, but not nearly as "amazing" as I (or my dining companions) would have hoped. Our sides of flavored smashed cucumbers (YUM), pumpkin cake (oddly mushy breaded/deep-fried zucchini, I believe...) and oyster pancakes (an interesting, eggroll-ish "turnovers") were ok, and all in all, it wasn't a BAD experience, I think I'll need to go back for another try, probably dining in vs take out... Prices are great, our take out orders were filled promptly and accurately, friendly/informative service, along with the cutest restaurant kiddos you'll ever meet. Young son & I went by Five Grains Noodle House a couple days ago. We both had the "Mala Noodle Soup With Flank Steak", plus a couple sides. I got the "Flavored Smashed Cucumber", and young son got the "Flavored Shredded Seaweed." Flavored shredded seaweed.....blehhhh. Nice crunchy seaweed, but the only flavor I could detect was sesame oil. NOT ENOUGH soy/salty/umami flavor. ZERO heat (despite asking for it to be spicy). Flavored Smashed Cucumber - actually fairly decent for a quick pickled cucumber dish, but ZERO heat (despite asking for it to be spicy). Better than the Szechuan Pickles (pickled daikon) I had the last time I visited. Our noodle dishes, however, were EXCELLENT (sorry, no pics taken). Wonderfully flavorful broth. Nice presentation (better than last visit), nice KRUNCH from the chickpeas. Noodles had an excellent texture, not mushy at all. I wish that they'd work a bit more on their side dishes (consistently lacking flavor/balance), based on two visits. That being said, I'll certainly be back. read more

I ordered the wonton soup, slightly spicy, the smashed cucumber, and the fried fish. I also got a honey jasmine green tea which had a surprising taste. The wonton soup was great, it had a sort of pork broth mixed with super soft and nice wontons. I truly enjoyed it. The smashed cucumbers were delicious. My only meh was the fried fish, which were not bad for the price but not something I'd recommend again either. One of the staff, I didn't get his name, was very attentive and sweet, helped us count out the boxes to box up our food. My only complaint was that I ordered the wonton soup thinking it would look like the picture but it looked nothing like it. It threw me off. Other than that, this place was great. Great, traditional Chinese (not Americanized Chinese) food! I got the Noodle Soup with Beef Stew, a side of the Smashed Cucumbers, an order of pot stickers and a bottle of White Pear juice. Delicious!! This is part of a chain that has 4,000+ restaurants in China but only 2 in the US (other is in California.) You can tell the broth in the soup has been simmered for days. Tried this for the first time tonight and loved it! I got the Mala Noodle Soup with flank steak. The broth was super flavorful, and it had plenty of noodles, beef and tofu. My husband and I happened to drive by and decided to take a chance. The place is a very authentic Chinese soup restaurant! The broths are varied as well as the options in them. We started with some basic egg rolls and seaweed salad. The salad was perfectly seasoned and the egg rolls were super flavorful, delicate, and full!! My husband normally doesn't like egg rolls and he finished his before I did mine! Since it was super hot outside, we decided on their "dry noodles" for dinner, i.e. no broth. My husband had the "Dry Spice Noodles" and I had the "Dry Noodles with Pork Sauce." The portions on the entrees were huge! They were so well done and balanced! Even though the pork sauce on mine was very mild, it was still full of the most delicious and delicate flavors. We finished our meal with their "Chinese donuts" for dessert. Very disappointing. My wife and I took our kids to try this place out for the first time. When the food came, mine wasn't horrible ( the flank steak was a little tough, the broccoli and egg were cold, but overall I'd say it was around a 6.5/10), but my wife didn't like her's at all. When she returned to the counter to ask for a refund for her meal, the manager was called immediately and the cashier and manager proceeded to discuss the situation in Korean (alluding to the manager's inability to speak English). The cashier told my wife that the manager would not refund her, and that no one has disliked their food before. My wife responded that a "no refund policy" wasn't posted anywhere in the establishment, she still hadn't received part of the order, and requested that she at least be refunded her meal's portion of the bill. By this time, additional patrons had entered the restaurant and began to observe the situation. One of them came to my table (I was sitting with our kids while this was going on), and asked if it was my wife at the counter. I replied yes, and he told me that they were giving her a hard time. He continued that he'd eaten there once, the food was pretty good so he thought he'd return with his wife, but after witnessing their conduct he'd rather go somewhere else. He and his wife left as I made my way to the counter to see what was going on. Once arrived to the counter, I asked what was going on. My wife explained the situation to me, saying that at one point the cashier agreed to refund a small portion of the bill but the manager wouldn't permit it. The manager then corrected my wife in English, to which my wife responded "oh, so you CAN understand me and speak English?" I didn't feel my wife should've said that, so I calmly interrupted with "ok, so can you guys refund my wife's meal?". After a brief Korean dialogue, the cashier replied with "no". I turned to my wife and said "ok, let's go". We got our children and left immediately. My wife's not a Karen, the bulk of the situation was the cashier and manager talking to each other in Korean. Aside from one individual, the place was empty when we arrived and empty when we left. We won't be returning. read more

We decided to try 5 grain noodle house in Kettering today. It did not disappoint. The soup was amazing! The steak flank was tender and the flavor was amazing g with the right amount of heat. Got it to go for my first experience. But the restaurant does have seating away from the main door and busy to go area. Looked well lit and clean. The staff were cheerful and nice. My online order was hot, well packed and ready when I got there. The soups were great. Plentiful and full of flavor. Noodles were packaged separate so they didn't soften too much before eating. This soup is full of flavor but traditionally prepared stock. We ordered both the five grains house soup and mala soup both with flank steak. Be prepared that the soup base has small amounts of fish, tofu and vegetables. The mala is pretty spicy but is 10X more flavorful than the five grains house soup. The cucumbers were also spicy/umami and a nice cold addition. The pear drink was out but the Jasmine tea was yummy. There's one gentleman/employee who speaks English and is extremely helpful named "Lou" (sorry I forgot how he spelled it). He makes excellent recommendations but the other kind employees were not English proficient. Cozy place if you're okay with traditional noodle soup. read more
