FIVE GUYS BURGER AND FRIES is located in the South Shore Center mall on Alameda Island. My immediate impulse is that FIVE GUYS should be re-named, "AMERICA'S LAST GREAT HAMBURGER AND FRENCH FRY RESTAURANT." To date, I have been to Five Guys on four occasions. THE FRIES. The French fries are thick and tasty and do not in any way resemble the toothpick-thin fries that are sold at most fast-food restaurants. In contrast to the flavorful fries at FIVE GUYS, the so-called French fries from that place with the golden arches taste like processed cardboard. And then, there is that other place that has imitation golden arches, and where these golden arches have a bend in the middle. Their French fries are not in any way French fries. Their French fries are just crunchy potato sticks, the kind you can buy in a can. In contrast to the fraudulent French fries that are sold by these two restaurants, the French fries from FIVE GUYS are tasty and have the compelling flavor of cooked potatoes. THE MOST ELEGANT FRIES IN THE U.S. Now, the most elegant French fries that are available in the United States of America, are the puffed-potatoes that are available at the venerable Antoine's. Puffed potatoes are also called, "pommes souffles" and the recipe is distinguished in that two different batches of oil are needed, one at 280-300 degrees F and the other at 350 degrees F. Antoine's is located in New Orleans, which makes it difficult to purchase a meal comprising puffed-potatoes (unless you live in New Orleans). And so, FIVE GUYS is my preferred place for French fries. Every couple of years, I make my own French fries with boiling in olive oil, and I can slice them as thick as I want. Once, I made pommes souffles using the two batches of oil, and this recipe actually worked (the potato slices suddenly expanded and puffed out, when dipped into the higher temperature oil). In addition to having more personality, the health food nut can be consoled by the fact that raw vegetables such as raw jalapenos, raw peppers, and raw stringed beans, are higher in folic acid than the cooked versions of these plant foods. Folic acid, which occurs in foods as various forms of "folates," is important for all cells in the body, where the first sign of a deficiency in this vitamin is anemia. (Okay, so much for this consolation to health food nuts.) Also, FIVE GUYS does not skimp on the size of the meat patty. LOCATION. The location of FIVE GUYS is stellar, at least in comparison to other business locations near the coastal areas of the entire east bay. With the exception of Pinole Regional Park and Crown Beach on Alameda Island, the entire coastline in the east bay is a dismal affair. Please note that Crown Beach has two bird sanctuaries, one called Elsie Rohmer and the other taking the form of a roped-off area near the end of Grand Avenue that is reserved for those cute little snowy plovers. The mall itself is a handsome affair, with elegant bronze statues of deer and squirrels. The anchor stores in this mall are Safeway, Trader Joe's, and Kohl's department store, though many shoppers will likely have another favorite destination among the many businesses at this mall. Other attractive features at this mall, are the annual Santa Claus house, and an Independence Day (July 4th) concert. CONCLUSION. To summarize, if you want to spend an hour experiencing, America's favorite culinary past-time (burgers & fries) I recommend FIVE GUYS more than any other restaurant. read more

Went to Five Guys Alameda with a couple of buddies on opening night. Since Five Guys is a chain, we expected the same quality and prices as the others and that's pretty much what we got. The Alameda store is a little small inside but has lots of table outside which are really nice on a nice night like tonight. Ordered the usual Little Cheeseburger, wife splurged on the Bacon Cheeseburger, 1 friend had a grilled cheese and the other a burger. All the burgers were typical Five Guys quality, cooked well and full of the mushrooms, pickles and other stuff. The fries were on the soggy side so -1 stars for that. Overall, not a bad experience for opening night. The place was packed all night and I suspect they'll get better as they all get to speed. For the price, IMHO Five Guys beats In-n-Out and certainly McD's and BK. We'll be back often. read more

Ehhhhh my experience here wasn't the greatest. It's my first time going to a Five Guys and I have no idea why, but I had high hopes, and maybe too high of expectations... First thought walking into this place was wow there's a whole lot of people in here, and half of it was basically the staff scurrying around in the transparent kitchen. I just got a very hectic vibe as I was, in a way, mesmerized by the logistics of the kitchen. So onto the ordering. I thought that it was pretty neat that you can create your own burger with whatever toppings you wanted in it at a flat rate. I ordered mushrooms and lettuce (dont ask why I just want my veggies!). Apparently the cashier didn't hear me say lettuce because when I got my order, it was sans lettuce. The cashier seemed kinda bitchy, which kinda deterred me from complaining about my order. (In-N-Out staff aren't bitchy!) The staff was hectic too, so I just let it slide. Sorry for me comparing this place to In-N-Out, but I thought that the burgers were bigger, which is a plus. The taste was great and not too shabby. The thing I didn't understand was why did they wrap the burger in foil which ultimately caused the buns to be flat and mush. =[ Oh yea, I also thought that it was cool that they gave complimentary peanuts. I've stayed away mainly because of the 3 star reviews. Today of all days in the pouring rain, I decided to give it a chance. Boy, am I glad. You get your choice of toppings on a single patty (little burger) or a double (regular). The bacon was crispy and freshly cooked. The patty looks nothing like the pre-fab patties of your usual suspects of fast food purveyors. And the fries are neither the typical skinny fries nor big steak fries. They're a happy crispy medium. I love the Cajun flavor option. The small fries are enough for 2. I appreciate the inclusion of calories on the menu. It steered me away from the larger sizes. I always get the little burger, which is a perfect size for me for lunch. The selection and the quality of the toppings are awesome. The burger patty itself is a little weird. It is very flat and tiny and burnt around the edges. It just is the way it is. The bun is fresh though and it all comes together surprisingly well. The fries are ok - servings are huge. I'm thinking this place could be a little quicker getting their orders out to the customers. The place is busy and the staff are nice. Burgers are okay and the spicy fries rock. I just can't imagine having to dish out $15-17 bucks for a burger, fries, and a drink and then having to wait for more time than necessary to get them. The staff could also use some faster reaction time to see that their tables need to be cleaned as the customers are leaving. Not when they are asked to clean them. I love 5 Guys. :) They are the only burger joint (that I know of) apart from In-n-Out Burger that has the choice of a lettuce wrap instead of a regular hamburger bun. Kudos to that! I'll keep coming back for your lettuce wrapped bacon burger. :) The lines are usually not long and the staff is very efficient, friendly and attentive (there's constantly someone who takes the trash or sweeps the floor). The place is big enough and has outdoor seating as well. The only thing that I don't like is the waiting time. I know they make everything fresh and on spot (patties) and that it takes time, but when you're hungry it's still a heck of a wait. No special sauce, the bun has little to no integrity, patty is whatever, they don't put the cheese on the patty while it's grilling (so the cheese isn't melted) and it's expensive! This is a typical Five Guys restaurant. It tends to be busy around dinner time when I pass by but the workers tend to be quick. The only hold up seems to be the customers who are trying to figure out what they want on their burgers or who are asking why there are boxes of free peanuts laying around. I love getting a little cheeseburger which I can add sautéed mushrooms to and their little Cajun fries. They call these sizes little but they definitely fill me up. The fries are put into a paper cup but the worker normally puts in a nice healthy additional scoop into the bag so that it could be enough to feed two slightly hungry people. The Cajun fries can get a bit on the salty side but I love them anyhow. Five Guys is a bit more expensive than In n Out but the restaurant is clean and I feel like I'm normally in and out of it with my to go order within 10 minutes of ordering. Five Guys does not, however, serve milkshakes which is a let down since it goes so well with burgers and fries. That's why I'm giving a 4 instead of 5 star review. read more

This was my family and I first time coming to Five Guys and it most likely be the last. We visited the Alameda Location and the customer service was horrible. We asked questions bout the menu as we have small children who didn't know what they wanted and as we asked questions the cashier rolled her eyes and said things like" I don't know" and "it's on the menu" we spent a nice amount of money in the restaurant that night and then had to go to a supermarket to get more food to feed our kids because the food was nasty and they didn't want to eat it and neither did my husband or I. Ordered online, email said ready in 7 minutes, showed up after 10 minutes. Told the manager my name, and that I had ordered online, and he said nothing and went off. They were more than happy to switch out the bun for lettuce & I love that they fry their fries in 100% peanut oil so I can still eat those too!
