Today was a day of indecision for me. I, for some reason, couldn't figure out what I wanted to eat. I drove from place to place until finally I parked in frustration. But then my eye caught the sign for The Cheese Steak Shop and I said "Just go there! Why the heck not?" So parking was a breeze for a Thursday afternoon. Walking into the establishment I saw four tables with four seats. There's a garbage conveniently near the entrance/exit door. The menu was easy to navigate. If I had the time, the money, or the metabolism I would have gotten like four different sandwiches. But again( I wanted to make things easy for myself I went for the Classic Philly. Half a sandwich was good enough to fill me up. I didn't pass up on the peppers! I got water for a drink because I'm not into Pepsi products. If you need to use the restroom, you can get the code from one of the people working. The sandwich took about four minutes to cook. The bread could have been a bit crunchier. Loved the way they cooked the meat, the cheese was melted just right, and the peppers were the right type of spice. The real thing that made me pleased to eat here, besides the food, was that they were playing the Club World Cup game between Inter Miami (MESSI MESSI) and FC Porto. It's March 15th, 2020. I know I'm supposed to avoid human contact to stop the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) but the last two days, I really am avoiding human contact because NO ONE was in the restaurant yesterday and no one was in the The Cheesesteak Shop today. Except the nice young ladies making my King of Philly cheesesteak of course. That being said, my sandwiches were ready as soon as I walked through the door after ordering prior to arriving. How was the King of Philly cheesesteak? It was great. I really have no complaints about this sandwich. It has a nice amount of cheese melted in steak. I ordered it with onions and hot peppers. If I have one complaint, it's that they leave the stem on all the peppers they use, so it has to be plucked out of the sandwich. The location in Blanding Shopping hub is convenient, because there is always parking, especially during this pandemic crisis. Nothing to ease my anxiety like a Philly cheesesteak. read more

Got takeout last Wednesday night for dinner and it was absolutely fabulous!! Best ever!! We had the original cheesesteak sandwiches which had so much steak and so fresh. The onion rings were really good but not many in the regular sized order, so if you're sharing order the large. We also shared the green salad and it too was really really good. I've never been to a cheese steak joint that served sandwich with unmelted cheese and extremely dry meat. The meat was made yesterday or made several hours ago. We're all extremely unhappy with our visit. I got the "King Philly" and there was nothing Philly about this sandwich. I had to add mayo and ketchup to the sandwich just to get it down. This is a to go review I placed the order on Tuesday afternoon and it was ready within 10 minutes. When I got there, there wasn't a line and I was helped and got my order immediately. The pick up process was fast and efficient. I got home and opened my chicken hoagie and it was very soggy. There were juices on the bag itself too. I had to rip open the bag to place the sandwich on top to contain the sauce that was leaking out. The curly fries were okay as it was still slightly crispy. This should be eaten at the restaurant and not ordered to go to ensure the sandwich doesn't get soggy. The sandwich was decent though. After perusing the menu, I ordered Motown Philly, a cheese steak with beef, cheese, mushrooms and grilled onion, and a side order of curly fries. Specialties: Cheese steaks sandwiches, vegetarian sandwiches, salads, choice of sides (steak fries, Philly cheese fries, curly fries, cheese steak chips, sweet potato fries, onion rings, chicken strips) and cold beverages. They also have a kids' menu available for ages 12 and under. Seating capacity: about 20 people. Ambiance: casual and comfortable. I like the sports banners on the wall (Warriors, Raiders, A's). I had to chuckle when the older woman/cashier greeted me and said "I haven't seen you for a while." I replied that it was my first time there. (She mistaken me for somebody else.) She was helpful but somewhat stoic. The service was okay. My Motown Philly was good. I shared it (half order sandwich) with my husband. He added hot sauce to enhance the sandwich to his liking. The curly fries were just okay. Taking into consideration the food and the service, I am giving this place a 3 star rating. A friend of mine lives near this place, so over last 7 years we've gone to it quite a few times (very good food). The most recent visit was just flat out bad. We ordered 2 of their standard cheese steaks to go. They were not good. The steak was only hot on the edges. As if it had been taken out of a freezer and quickly cooked. Both of our sandwiches had this issue. If that's not enough, we also witnessed one of their workers being irate and tossing an order at a customer (if the food was anything like ours, well...). The worker then turned her anger at the cook (who didn't look experienced at all). Just not a good environment. In any case, this place has really gone down hill. We realize the management must hvae changed because they used to have cooks that really knew how to cook. Now it seems like they're hiring high school kids and expecting them to be experienced chefs. It was quite delicious with the right amount of cheese and meat balance and the crunch from the peppers . The meat was juicy as I know some locations have dry meat and the bread is usually very dry as well . The customer service is decent at this location as well. What I would mention is the packaging of the food did make the bread soggy and very oily . I'm not sure if their is others ways to pack and prep it as I know it's served fresh and hot but heads up it gets messy eating . This Cheese Steak Shop is hidden away in a shopping center half a mile south of Park Street. On the other side from Nob Hill Foods, in that small building near Tilden. It's a little hard to find, but people have found it. There was a good crowd there when we visited on a Saturday afternoon. How good is it? Consider this: I ate a cheesesteak in Philadelphia long long ago, and didn't eat another cheesesteak for years because I didn't want to have a subpar sandwich that would ruin the memory of Jim's Steaks on South Street. I reluctantly broke that rule with this place. I shouldn't have been so reluctant. This cheesesteak is as yummy as in Philly. Bare-bones interior, with pics of Philly and not much more. Although this location is in a better part of Alameda, it still fits the general rough-and-tumble vibe of much of the island. The Hunny had the barbecue, I forget what the girl had. I was considering the King Of Philly, but finally settled on my favorite, the garlic. You can add onions and peppers, which I did, and they unfortunately covered up the beautiful garlic taste (okay, those three words don't go together for most people, heh heh). A 10-incher can fill most people's stomachs and then some. I'm not that wild about their fries, but I've had few fries that I do like. If you want fast food but want something besides burgers, you may not think of the Cheese Steak Shop immediately. But you should. You won't be disappointed. It was prime time during lunch hour. The King of Philly was $12.99 & hefty amount of meat & cheese. It included grilled onions and peppers. I normally would add the mushrooms but forgot, plus I didn't want it to be too soggy. Anyhow, ample parking and the three ladies were working hard. The only negative thing I can say was that I didn't like the girl who was cooking, grab raw meat with gloves from the fridge then use the same gloves to grab bread. That's cross contamination!
