My first experience with Five Guys was about 10 years ago, back in the glorious 'burbs of Northern Virginia, when the high school seniors would drive us freshmen to grab burgers and fries after indoor track meets. This was back when there were only five locations, and until about a month ago I had zero idea they had expanded outside of the Virginia area. But anyway, let me give you the scoop on this fine location (and do my best to avoid rambling like an old man on the porch). The gf and I walked over this evening - "Opening Day" - for a late dinner. It has the familiar red+white checkered theme of Five Guys, a spacious seating area, and is in a great location at Clark+Fullerton. Back in the day we would go to a cramped location in a dumpy part of town, but I don't miss it much - this place looks awesome and still manages to feel authentic. There are peanuts for you to munch on while you're in line or waiting for your order to come out. Back in the day you used to just drop the shells on the ground, but as I dropped my first peanut shell I realized the floors were pristine, so maybe this isn't kosher at the Chicago locations... but if you do happen to see other people doing it, go ahead and join them! We each got a "little" cheeseburger and then split a regular fries. I can't say enough about how delicious the burgers are, and there are plenty of toppings to choose from, including grilled mushrooms and jalapenos. And don't worry, there isn't some "secret" menu like at those uppity In 'n' Out burger joints. As for size... we used to take down double cheeseburgers after workouts in high school, but unless you're amazingly hungry a normal-sized hamburger will be plenty. The fries are also to die for. Back in the day (I need to stop saying that) they would have a chalkboard behind the counter saying where their fries had been shipped fresh from on that particular day. They don't have that here, but the fries still taste amazingly fresh. Insider's tip: the regular fries are PLENTY for two people. If you're ordering takeout, they will put an 8oz styrofoam cup in your bag and then proceed to fill it with about 2 cups' worth of fries. Did I mention how greasy all this stuff is? This is not the place to go if you're on a diet. The final touch at any Five Guys is receiving your brown paper bag covered in grease splotches from the burgers and fries. As Dr Nick would say, that's your window to weight gain. But after my amazing meal, I can attest that you will almost certainly find the calories to be worth it. read more

Well Five Guys Burgers was definitely good, and definitely on par as In-n-Out. I can't really compare the two because I feel as if they're two different type of burgers. What makes an In-n-Out burger good is the grilled green onions, the thousand island sauce and the soft buttery buns. What makes a Five Guys burgers good is the juicy double meat patties (standard on all burgers), and it's huge selection of toppings. I had the bacon cheeseburger with tomatoes, lettuce, grilled onion (regular white onions), mayo, pickles, grilled mushrooms, jalapeno peppers and ketchup...there's still more toppings that you can put on top. It was a great burger and I would totally go back And a little pointer, don't order a large order of fries for yourself. Order a large order of fries and share it with 3 or 4 people. They fill a cup full and then throw in another scoop into your bag; it's ridiculously a lot. read more

This place rocks!!! Beats the renal system out of In 'n Out Burger any day of the week. If you're the kind of person who wants their burger rare, you're just as useless a human being as any idiot willing to spend $50 on a steak and then orders it well-done. You don't know the first thing about food, dining out or the etiquette of ordering. And if you don't like their fries, you've invalidated your opinion. Their fries are the best. No argument. One more bit of advice for all reviewers: Don't bash a place and claim you can get the same thing better elsewhere, then NOT say what that other place is! OMG these burgers are great. If you like a big greasy,sloppy burger like your mom used to make in the frying pan at home, this is the place for you. No, it's not a gourmet burger, just a basic all-American burger that will bring back memories. The fries are fresh cut and geasy too!. Love thee fact that they have vinegar to make it an even more decadent experience. Make sure you only order a small order of fries and split them between two people because they give you way more than one person can possibly eat. It's also not a place you want to eat every day if you want to walk thhis earth for long - very filling. read more

I've been coming here a while and it's nice that you get a lot of fries and can have your burger your way (where have I heard that before?). The 14th of Oct at half past three though, I was disappointed by the small crispy fries, probably the ones that'd been sitting there just cooking for hours, and the hot dog I ordered was missing 3 of 4 of the ingredients I'd asked for. Fail on the fries and the toppings. Taking a look at who was putting the food together, I should've known better than to believe they'd get things right. read more

A burger place that does not charge for a single extra anything you might want in your burger. Instead of "$1 burger" nights at places like Bar Louie, spend an evening at 5 Guys, and get Mayo, Relish, Onions, Lettuce, Pickles, Tomatoes, Grilled Onions, Grilled Mushrooms, Ketchup, Mustard, Jalapeno Peppers, Green Peppers, A-1 Sauce, Bar-B-Q Sauce, and/or Hot Sauce with no hidden fees or extra costs. read more

This place does make a tasty burger! However, at more than ten bucks for a burger and fries it is a little steep. Also, the burgers are very messy and greasy. They taste fantastic and they give you a lot of fries, they just happened to turn the bag clear. The service was fast and I can't really complain. All around a pretty good experience if you don't mind a couple of grease stains on your shirt. read more

I normally order from here and have splendid service whether the food is good or not. Today the customer service I experienced from the manager (Rosie), the one who made sure it was clear that i knew she was mixed with black, was very rude, to the point where I myself and everyone behind me walked out! Incompetent! Do not waste your time going to the Matteson location. The lack of care for the customers is insane. They continuously mess up orders, forget orders, have you waiting over 30 minutes for fries, are rude, and completely unprofessional. I will never patron this place again I will be reporting this location to the Better Business Bureau. Throw the whole place away. read more

Really good! This is as close to a homemade burger in a fast food joint you will ever find. Everything made fresh, with your options to choose from a huge selection of toppings and the fries are crunchy fresh yum! I wished they offered a bit more than just burgers but that's what keeps this place simplistic. Just burgers 'n fries! read more

Great burger, even cooler drink machines. Seriously there are like a hundred drink choices and if your a drink mixer like me sheer heaven. Burger was tasty, called ahead so the wait was short. The fries are so good I burned my tongue being greedy and the peanuts are a nice touch when you have the munchies. read more

Why not just go to McDonalds? There's really not that big of a difference. The burgers are mediocre; the paint the store with like 2-3 colors; the staff is underpaid and it's not a Chicago brand. Waste your money somewhere meaningful! read more

Basic Five Guys. Not much different than the other locations I have been to. The difference is that this location was a little dirty but it is the city. It's a busy location. The food was good and came out fast. read more
