We have always loved 5 Guys for their fries and burgers. This afternoon they failed badly on both counts at the Amity Rd. location. The burger was dry and flavorless. The mouth feel, texture and flavor said: It's Monday so today's fries are on encore performance of yesterday's fries - reheated. Service was good, restaurant was clean. I will never again visit this location unless I have a flat and need to pull into the parking lot to change it. $29+ for a little burger that was awfully dry. I would pass on that if it was free. a bun with vegetables Reheated fries that we're not enjoyable to eat. and a 15% tip No way I will chance a repeat performance. Stopped here before my class at SCSU, I hadn't had their burgers in a long time and I quickly remembered why. The burger really didn't impress me, it felt like just a slight upgrade from a McDonald's patty, nothing special for the price. They have free peanuts while you wait, but I passed on those. The cashier was friendly. I got a big burger with lettuce tomato grilled onions and ketchup. The toppings are free. Every table in the place was dirty, so I decided to just take my food and eat in my car. The fries were hot, salted well, but came out soggy, which was kind of disappointing. The burger was good, albeit rather greasy. The place was satisfactorily clean for a fast food joint, but not great, and the vent hoods seemed in need of repair. Why, why, WHY are shakes so often unavailable at this ONE location? And in the rare instance when shakes happen to be available, the Five Guys mobile app NEVER shows shakes. The shakes menu section has been missing from the mobile app for years, just for this location. This is a local owner/manager issue. This location does not have enough staff working to cover register, grill, fries, takeout/shakes, etc. simultaneously. They have purposefully removed shakes as a menu item online to avoid the issue. This five guys is somehow never open. We went for dinner one night at 7pm and the refused to take our order because they were "closing at 8". On the door it says their hours are 11am-10pm. Went back the next day at 1pm and they were still closed. We called the store and ask when they would be open and they said "not until after 3pm probably". It's absolutely ridiculous and we will probably not be coming back here even though we live right around the corner. However, maybe it is for the best they weren't open because then we would spend a fortune on not even that much food, sure its good but is it really worth spending over $40 for two fast food meals?? In short, if you are planning to go here call ahead and make sure they are actually open to save yourself a trip. Gotta say, this place rocks. I'm only deducting a star because I think that the prices are a little outrageous and there's some inconsistencies with the fries (sometimes too salty, sometimes overcooked). They greet you when you come in and I'm sure their energy level is tough to keep up with throughout their shifts, but they seem to do it with ease. The latest addition is the Coke soda fountain which lets you add as many flavors as you can dream of. Excellent addition in my opinion. Fries are good.. sometimes a little too cooked or too salty but definitely one of their selling points. I've noticed that this store seems to not give as many fries as others. I'm sorry but every single employee in there at this current moment would somehow fuck up a PB & J sandwich. I waited at the counter for 15 mins, for the guy to say I need to catch up on orders. Then stare at me for maybe another 11 minutes. After my order was put in, a solid 35 minutes went by before anyones order was made and mine came about 15 after that. Are you planning the well worn Boston to NYC trek and kind of annoyed you have to drive through Connecticut? I have something for you that will make a bit less boring. Stop at Five Guys in New Haven, just off the Wilbur Cross (Route 15). This location is about 100 yards off the parkway and there is plenty of parking. The staff is friendly, and like all Five Guys locations, they serve up some pretty darn good burgers and fries. There is ample seating inside and although always busy, there is always somewhere to sit and eat. My only complaint is that the last time I went, they mixed up the lines on the soda machine and regular coke was coming out of the diet coke taps. This is also a good location as it is almost midway between NYC and Boston. read more

Good? Yes. Better than In-N-Out? No. Still, you'll be hard pressed to find a better burger for the Five Guys price out in Connecticut. The burgers are not shockingly cheap, but for the quality and size they do pack great value. The default burgers come with two juicy patties on a soft sesame seed bun, but you can get "little" burgers with single patties. I tend to opt for the "little" option, though the regular burger is delicious, with any added value you get from doubling the meat. It still has plenty of great meat and leaves a little more room for fries. You can get either size with cheese and or bacon on top for a little bit extra, and the rest of the toppings are free free free. I love the toppings policy, which makes the burgers an even better deal, and I definitely take advantage. I like to load up with some combination of lettuce, tomato, pickle, jalapeno, grilled onion, grilled mushrooms, hot sauce, and ketchup. My burgers inevitably end up dripping juice and condiments, making a mess of my face and dining space. I usually need a fork so as not to miss a stray mushroom or bit of jalapeno. The fries are great but inconsistent. They're made fresh from real potatoes on display in the store, and the portions are gigantic. The texture varies from day to day, and while they're fantastic when they tend towards crispy, they can be soggy, too. The food here is as simple as the name suggests, and I like that Five Guys sticks to a couple basics and does them well. As far as chains go, and especially fast food chains, Five Guys is in the very top tier. The burger won't blow your mind, but it's solid and the price is right. As for the fries, when they're good, they knock out any competition - and yes, the fries are much better than In-N-Out's. I also like the space and the accompanying dining experience. Even though Five Guys is a casual-as-can-be chain burger joint, it has a fun vibe, with peanuts in their shells for snacking and a view of an open kitchen. The place gets crowded, but lines go fast and seating is easy to find. For the price and quality, Five Guys is worth coming back to again and again. For Californians visiting the east coast, it's a must-try, if only to make the obvious comparison. I happen to prefer In-N-Out, but it's close, and many others disagree. Great burgers, mountains of fries, and they don't complain when you go to refill your soda more than once. A regular fry can be split among 3-4 people. That being said, I suppose it justifies the pricetag. It's a little up there for burgers (two burgers, a large soda, and a regular fry is close to $20), but I guess any place will charge that much for a good burger. One thing I do love is that they have malt vinegar for your fries. The parking lot is horrendous, however. There are 3 speedbumps at minimum, and they're steep. I can't drive there in 2 of the 3 cars we own, because I am afraid the speedbumps will rip the oil pan out. There's also no secret back entrance where you don't have to go over them, but that's the whole Amity Plaza. You don't have to wait TOOOOO long, unless you go during peak hours. The staff is generally pretty pleasant though. I always get a double cheeseburger, all the way, with jalapenos - and even though I did wait 30 min once (an entire soccer team had walked in before me), I still think it's well worth it. read more

Very unpleased, order came to over $50 and I have an allergy so I asked for a lettuce wrap burger, tipped ,20% only to see my lettuce wrap burger was not in the bag and I was not given a receipt which would be needed for a refund or replacement. After a long day of work was really looking forward to it too. Holy carnivore batman! I was freaking hungry, but that was more meat than I needed to eat in a month! We finished half our root beers just watching them make the burgers, and spice the fries. We were salivating by the time we got our order. I think we might have even danced to the car. The juicy burgers hit my tongue, and I was hooked. I've always loved a good 5 guys burger and Cajun fries! Super happy to see that I can get a one person size of fries now in a small. Having a mad craving for a little bacon cheeseburger and totally forgot this location existed until I saw the sign and the store from the Merritt parkway so I drove on in. Glutton for punishment just after getting a nice workout in. The place was clean and the staff super friendly, some of the most friendly people I have encountered at any of the 5 guys locations I have been to. The menu is exactly the same everywhere, the layout the same, and the food, awesomely delicious. My order came right out hot and fresh. And yes, the fries are greasy and the burger hot and juicy. This was my third visit to a Five Guys establishment, I thought perhaps for my first two I had just caught them on an off day, but this will be my last, as all three were consistently mediocre at best. Previous stores visited were on Newbury St in Boston, and in Stoneham MA. I just don't understand where all the good reviews come from for this place. I got the two patty cheeseburger, not flavorful, not juicy at all, at any of the shops I visited. Strike one, there is no option on doneness, I want a medium rare burger, but all they offer is medium well, more like well done. Strike two, the regular sized fries are ridiculously large for one person, and have been greasy every time as well, and at 2.99, with a burger, and a drink, you're pretty much at 11.00 for a disappointing meal. The third strike was the iced tea, which is instant, not fresh brewed. Even mcdonald's has fresh brewed tea. I wish In and Out would come east and bury these guys! It's a Five Guys, so you probably know the menu by heart or you avoid the place to save your own. The staff is nice and I like the clientele here too - always an interesting mix of people enjoying themselves. But I don't know if I like the Five Guys burger better than the local Educated Burgher burger and I actually find the two quite similar - in terms of beefy flavor, greasiness and/or juiciness, crispness of lettuce, softness of mushrooms and onions, tangy-ness of hot sauce, etc. Because this shop is located in greater New Haven, I just thought I'd mention it. In the past 4 years I've seen the closing of Paul's, Yankee Doodle, Copper Kitchen and 1/2 of Clark's. If Connecticut doesn't watch out, it's native burgers will become extinct. Does Five Guys even offer pickle relish?* Sigh. Moving on: their fries are often worth my while and I do know that I like Five Guys better than In-N-Out. Having frequented this Five Guys and numerous others throughout the Tri-State Area, I have to say this is my favourite of them all. I'm not sure why, but the fries are always extra delicious at the Amity Rd. location. I wish it were closer to Yale and downtown New Haven, but the drive is always worth it. The interior is clean (save all the peanut shells, but whatever, they're free!) and the orders are always handled to perfection and the wait is long enough to realize that it isn't crappy fast food, but quick enough that you aren't bogged down. Originally from the West Coast and California, I've heard and had all of the In-n-Out mania. Five Guys is better. This is a REAL burger and the option of bacon. In-n-Out does not have that and the burgers are quite small, plus the fries at Five Guys blow In-n-Out's wimpy fries out of the water. This place not only makes the best burgers from scratch (and yes, they Beat Harry's Place which i gave 5 stars to yesterday, for that kind of down home snack shack place) but ''5 guys'' is in a class by themselves! They feature a different potato everyday. They get the freshest, and sometimes its an Idaho, sometimes it a Californian ----- whatever! BUT, they are sliced and cooked JUST as my grampa made or that you can make at home. REAL potatoes, fried in amazing FRESH oils, NEVER greasy tasting! THE key, is to get them from their place to yours, without eating all the fries out of the bag! I instantly got on the horn to my hunny to let him know, and he was so excited also....especially becuz we knew I was moving up here...and low and behold, not only had our (former) fave Red Robin expanded up from VA, but now 5 guys (which puts RR to shame in the burger dept.....no contest) is in CT too! He was as blown away as I was! 5 guys is not much on atmosphere (u should have seen the old shack we used to go to at their orig) but now from the one i have visited a couple times in FL b4 i moved, they have a pretty big area inside for eating (u order at counter, then be seated, they will call u or deliver)....and when we were on Merritt Pkwy driving by on my move from FL to Hartford, we went by a location in New haven-----this one here that I added---- (before the tunnel) that looked like it had a drive thru! a drive thru! I cannot tell you how proud I am of these guys (I know, silly, but its so awesome to see a place u supported (like once a week at least!) make it big!! O-O-OOO-O.MY.GOSH! I went here for the first time, and my burger tasted delicious! I like that you can add extra things to your burger without extra charge. One order of fries can feed 2 or 3 people. They were really good-the brown paper bag containing our burgers and fries came out nice and greasy. Also, they have Cherry Coke-my fav! This place is super casual.
