I went to the Five Guys on W 42nd Street. And my experience was less than stellar. I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger. And it was sorrily overcooked. Thankfully I ordered all of the toppings in order to give this sad excuse of a burger any kind of flavor. I ordered the fries which were very greasy. These fries were so greasy they immediately start soaking through the bag. My cholesterol level shot up just by looking at the bag. The only item that I ordered that were any good was the bacon cheese dog. The soda was okay. But that's only because I filled it myself. All in all, I won't be going back anytime soon. What is unique about this place is that you can have as many FREE toppings as you like. You have to request for things that you usually do not have to ask for at another burger joint like ketchup and mayo. Other toppings include: Relish Onions Pickles Grilled Onions Grilled Mushrooms Mustard Jalapeno Peppers Green Peppers A.1.® Steak Sauce Bar-B-Q Sauce Hot Sauce Impressive, right?! We also ordered the REGULAR fries that is good for 2 people! Our orders came in a brown bag that was lined with oil. I had to take a picture of how oily our bag was. Our burgers were wrapped in foil. The presentation was a mush burger when unraveled. I do not mind at all. I just cared about the taste. Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed. With all the built up anticipation from hype all the signs proudly strewn across the restaurant walls of all the awards they received in WASHINGTON, the burger tasted similar to the one you can get at anyone's backyard bbq. Now, I'm a big fan of the Five Guys. I love their philosophy, their no holds barred, everything but the kitchen sink in the bag philosophy. Rarely do I pass up on their fries if I have just a little bit more room. This location however is a bit small, and not always well organized. It tends to get flooded with people sometimes, really making the cleaning staff work. It does have a generously sized and consistently clean bathroom, which is hard to find in this area. I'm definitely glad that Five Guys just opened up a burger joint on 55th Street, 'cause I didn't already have enough artery-clogging options in Midtown, such as Burger Joint in the Parker Meridien. Having lived in the DC area for several years, Five Guys offered the best burger in DC and they definitely didn't disappoint in the Mid-Atlantic region. However, NYC is the major leagues, and it'll be interesting to see how Five Guys performs alongside Burger Joint, Shake Shack, Corner Bistro, Brgr, etc. Whereas a Burger Joint burger may be that hipster girl who lives in Midtown and wears designer skinny jeans (with some rips to look cool), a Five Guys burger is like the sorority girl from college who wears tank-top and 501 jeans and you just can't get enough of her. Five Guys doesn't skimp on their burgers and if you order a regular burger, be ready for a baseball-sized patty of beef. If you're not looking for a coma to follow your lunch, order the little burger instead. Also be prepared for a mess, as their burgers are like the ones your uncle used to grill at a summer picnic. They offer a multitude of toppings (unlike Burger Joint) for your burger, so take your pick. The fries are similar to boardwalk fries and I can't get enough of that cajun seasoning. So I finally gave in & boot-scooted myself over the 1/2 block from work I needed to venture through to get to the local Five Guys. The hamburger was pretty good, I'd definitely have it again. The cajun fries were fuckin' awesome & the over-serving of such was phenomenal...even my co-worker benefited from my trip, since there was no way in hell I could have finished all of those fries. I had heard about comparisons to In & Out...and although definitely not on the I&O level, I'd go back...if I was looking to spend a lil' extra on lunch or if someone else was paying. I came here recently to have one of their burgers and to try their Cajun fries. Sadly, I've discovered that this place is no longer my second favorite burger spot. It held that 2nd place spot for a long time, and it fought off many worthy opponents. However, a lot happens over the course of a year. I've sampled a lot of other burger establishments. Well, I finally had an opportunity to revisit this spot, and I didn't enjoy my burger as much as I had a over a year ago. The burger was, in a word, dry (fyi: they only cook to well-done). My toppings were fine: mayo, bacon, and tomato. The fact is, I've been spoiled with better burgers. I miss squeezing my burger and having it squirt juices back at me. I miss a burger patty that is soft and tender to the bite, I miss that char-broiled flavor. Regardless, the burger was good and tasty, the peanuts are still free, and the soft drinks are still AYCD. In fact, I sampled their Cajun fries, and those fries are very good. They add a touch of spice to their already great fries, and enhance them just the right amount. Definitely one of the better seasoned fries I've tried. I hadn't noticed my first few visits, but the prices are quite high for a fast food meal. Burger, reg. fries, and reg. drink came out to $14. Not quite the recession buster I'm searching for these days. Tip: order the regular size soda since refills are free. And, they give you way too much fries. Not bad, but certainly doesn't live up to the hype. I knew it wouldn't. This place has the BEST fries. The hand cut form fries are great and tasty and worth every penny. The burger is just ok. Not bad at all, but not worth coming back for. The toppings are all for free which is nice though. The atmosphere is horrendous. Just boring and ugly. Everyone I went with hated the atmosphere. Besides finding out that the Mayor is especially good at a certain form of expectorating (my what a guy!), this is what I learned about Five Guys. Five Guys are just too much to handle. I was conquered. My coworker has been raving about Five Guys burgers for two months now. I finally tried them after receiving some advice on how to order from Five Guys. I got a cheeseburger with mushrooms, grilled onions, and your standard lettuce, tomato and mayo. I also ordered a regular bag of cajun fries because my coworker said, "DON'T get the large. They will give you a paper bag the size of a sack of potatoes." Coworker, they still gave me a paper bag the size of a sack of potatoes. Oh my God, I was slightly afraid of all the food. And I didn't know the cheeseburger came with two patties. Oh lord, the meal was large enough to feed a family of four. I had to stop halfway before I had a heart attack. The burger was juicy but sort of tasteless. I should have put salt and pepper or some ketchup or barbeque sauce on it. It is very fresh though. The fries were a bit soft but the cajun seasoning was definitely addicting. I think smaller portions and more taste would have tickled my taste buds and have been friendlier to my stomach. But for the price, you get way more than you pay for. Quick. Affordable. Comforting. Creative. Delicious. These are the words that I'll never use to describe Five Guys. Oh no, I'm serious. Dead serious. I used to work near this location and I knew quite a few people who raved about this place. They're always the ones who march back into the break room with transparent oily brown bags. Don't get me wrong, fats are great, but the sight of that just makes me want to stuff a head of lettuce into my face. After much deliberation with myself, I finally decided to give Five Guys a chance. Little did I know, that oily brown bag was an omen to what I was about to experience. The second I open the door to this location, a burst of heavy & thick air completely envelopes me, and sweeps me off my feet. For a moment there, I thought I would to pass out. The presence of live patrons in the dining area was astonishing. Recovering from the shock, I managed to drag myself up to the register and order myself double cheeseburger. I'm just going to take a second here to mention that the cashier seemed very uninterested and was a tad unresponsive. Not sure if it's due to prolonged exposure to the fumes. Anyway, I get my burger about 15 minutes later. A tad slow, but whatever. I Oscar-Miked myself the hell out of that gas chamber, and hightailed it back to my job. There I was, comfortably sitting at my desk. I go in for my burger, unwrap it, only to have the entire thing fall apart in my hands. This might've been the most haphazardly put together burger I've seen; the cheese was everywhere; the toppings were on top of the bun; and the patties were coming out at opposite directions. Bah! It was aggravating to eat. And upon tasting it, I thought it was exceedingly average. Then another thought came to mind, price. These burgers are definitely overpriced for what they are. I believe I could get something of the same quality at many of the nearby burger joints. Ok, it's better than McDonald's. Ate lunch there about 2:15PM and the place was a little crowded. We called in the order, because it takes them about 20 minutes to prepare your burger and fries. Over the phone, I ordered a burger with everything. Once I sat down, I noticed that it had mushrooms on it I was like OK....Who ther F$%^$K orders a burger with everything and gets mushrooms, I guess me....was not expecting that... Since the mushrooms were over cooked or over grilled, I could barely taste them. Too me the fries are just as good as thier burgers. There was vinegar salt bottle on the table, I added to the fries to enhance the flavor! One more thing, I didn't notice any napkins in the place - they give you this paper/plastic wrap I guess as your napkins..You gonna need lots of napkins, becuase the burger is a juicey greasy messsssss! I love Five Guys out in Hackensack, NJ. Its right around where I used to live and whenever I go back home I make it a point to go there cause I'm a burger fiend and these are among my faves. I finally tried this new outpost in Manhattan today, and its ALMOST as good- but I will say they cook the burger a little longer here and the patty shrinks to less than the size of the bun. At the other location no such problems- so -1 star for overcooking. This a tasty burger- great and plentiful toppings, a double patty for guys with massive appetities like myself is the standard, and its got a slightly sweet tasting soft bun to soak up the grease (though I personally prefer a lightly toasted buttered one). Order it with the "works" which comes with all the standard toppings, and subtract and add from there. The fries are nutty. They give you 3 times what you expect and when warm they are excellent. And I'll say the hot dogs are really tasty here too (if expensive). They are cut split open and they give you all the same toppings you get on the burger. First and foremost, people need to stop comparing this place to In-n-Out. I will not review In-n-Out's burger here, but let's just say it comes in a perfect portion and doesn't fall apart on you, even if you order it animal-style. The burger alone is a meal if you get the regular size (which packs a mean 2 patties). Had I known, I would have gotten the little size, despite my stomach calling me a p%$$y. The beef was properly done. Even though the sign says that all burgers are done well, it was more like a medium well, which gave it that juicy flavor. The 'All The Way' burger comes with a lot of toppings, including mushrooms, which were a bit rubbery and grilled onions. Unfortunately, the bun had gotten soggy and the entire burger fell apart on me about halfway in to it. The fries were bland. Despite their unmistakable Idaho pride and cooking with peanut oil, they have no flavor and aren't very crispy. Over $3 for regular size which is a crap-load in metric system measurement terms. I've had my share of burgers and despite what Zagat and shitysearch rate this place, I can't say that I was impressed by a meal that cost me over $13. I decided to check out this place after reading about the hype surrounding this burger chain making a home in NYC. First off this place is not a cheap eats joint although there are cheap eat articles and magazine covers plastering the walls proclaiming it is. My bill came out to 14 bucks for a bacon cheeseburger, small fries, and a small drink. They have a big staff here but it seems to take quite some time to get your food since they apparently hand-make the burgers in front of you. Plus you can customize it with free toppings minus cheese. It was pretty packed when I came here, but the wait wasn't as long as Shake Shack long waits. I was worried I couldn't get a seat but people seem to move in and out of here quickly. So for the taste test. They offer two sizes of burgers, regular and little. The difference is number of patties. The regular comes with two patties while the small comes with one. I got the regular bacon cheeseburger with caramelized onions, fried mushrooms, and Jalapeo peppers. The meat itself had no flavor. It just tasted like a gooey mass of meat. I didn't really taste the bacon either. Fortunately the burger melted quickly in my mouth. The great thing was that their burgers don't give you gross feeling after you at it like at other burger places. Maybe I was just hungry. I don't know. Otherwise their burgers aren't bad. Their fries are freaking good! They are comparable to Pommes Frites fries at the Whole Foods bowery location. They give you a lot too. Basically they fill up a small pan of freshly cooked fries into a styrofoam cup. Whatever is left over they dump in your bag. They should just scrap the styrofoam cup and give you a bag full of fries. They're no reason to get to a large unless you're sharing with a group of people. A small is more than enough for two people. So I want to say their fries are tied with Whole Food's pommes frites for best fries in the NYC. Finally some good places for fries! Yeah, how can you say Overrated? I liked the burger in general but it is not such a Great burger. You see all these signs inside the place like best burger of 2007. I didn't think it was worth the $9.00 I spent. I got the Bacon Burger, yea it includes unlimited toppings so that was cool. This place is way better than a fast food chain in one of the shittiest parts of the city should be. And that might sound like damning with faint praise, but it really is pretty damn good. Burger Joint beat this place by a mile! Went there for lunch the other day to see what the big fuzz was about. We ordered ahead on the phone figured there would be a long wait. When we got there, the place was full of people, real stuffy and chaotic. We went up to the register to pay after we gave them our names and told them that we ordered over the phone. We were told it would just be a short wait. Long story short, after 45min of waiting, and repeatedly asking about our order; it turned out that they had our orders ready half an hour ago, but forgot to call us. We were furious leaving the place, but still hoping that the burgers would make up for it. Oh boy, as soon as we sank our first bite into the burger, all hopes were crashed. Personally, I don't care how many different toppings, sauces, bells and whistles you can put in a burger, if the burger's meat is not good, nothing can save that! Bland, dry, and disgusting. Five guys in NY tastes pretty close to the Five guys in Arlington Heights. Even though the guy behind the counter squats in a different zip code, he still cranks them out with that same old flavor you can find in other Five Guys locations. Amazing!!!! I still like the cajun fries, but I still wish they double fried them to crisp them up without the hassle of having to ask for them burnt up. In-N-Out rip off gone wrong. Five Guys is good, but not AMAZING, like some say. Yeah, they do the whole "fresh-cut fries, fresh ingredients" thing, but that doesn't help the taste of the burger, as a whole. I enjoyed the fries more than the burger, and the shakes weren't too good. If you want something like Five Guys, done the right way, and in NYC, I'd highly suggest Shake Shack, they do it right. My burger at Five Guys was dripping with grease, unfortunately, that's where any of the flavor was. It made me feel dirty eating this grease patty, I doubt I'll be back here, no point in not going to Shake Shack when available. This is the closest thing the East Coast has to In & Out. Juicy, tender, "oh my God, I might go into a meat induced coma" burgers are not to be missed. Nor are the fries. Tons of toppings, fast service, a CHEAP meal for Midtown. ONE problem, though, as I have a friend who mentioned this: if you have peanut allergies, this place is literally a death trap for you. I know, I know: the idea of death by legume may be funny to many of us, but to a growing portion of the population, they are fatal. The fact that Five Guys is littered with peanut shells and cooks everything in peanut oil is akin to "somebody running up to you the second you walk in the door and smearing peanut butter all over your face and crotch." I don't know where the crotch part came from (kinky!) and this was probably a drunken overstatement, but I still must provide this warning. Comparing 5GBF to places like In N' Out Burger and Shake Shack lacks any basis in reason. Of course, 5GBF is better than McDonald's and current-Burger King burgers. That's just not saying much. I feel like 5GBF is like what BK burgers were back in the early 80's. Back then BK probably gave a funk about a quality product and not profit margins. Now BK has just given up and bent over for its shareholders. McDonald's, in my lifetime, has always cared more about profits than about product. They've always been bent over. 5GBF's burgers are somewhat juicy and tasty. I give them a "meh". I will write this review, but I don't plan on writing home about them. One thing that really annoys me about 5GBF is the purposeful placement of potato sacks in the dining area. Just because 5GBF attempts to make "freshness" apparent doesn't mean "freshness" actually exists. Give up 5GBF. The tacky signage on the walls also sucks. At the 5GBF restaurant in downtown Brooklyn, the wall posts a review from a newspaper/magazine. Someone figured that referencing a favorable quote might impress an aura of favorable opinions. Upon closer inspection of the article, one notices the review gave 5GBF only 3/5 stars. And that was probably on the high-side. If you want the best burgers around, go to Shake Shack (if you're in the North East) or In N' Out Burger (if you're on the West Coast). You won't be disappointed. read more

The burgers and especially the French Fries are extremely oily and loaded with fat. I usually order take-out and by the time I return to my office the brown paper bag is soaked up with oil that the bag broke. One burger and French Fries with sales tax totaled approximately a whooping $10.00! The cooks assembling the burger with customized toppings do not always follow through as they usually forget BBQ sauce or use ketchup instead or forget pickles. It's rather inattentive to the quality of the service. I think this burger place for a fast food restaurant is better than McDonald's or Burger King, but very over-rated. The peanuts are not the main attraction as this restaurant chain is supposed to be famous for their burgers. Excellent! That's all I can say. Great customer service! I'd take it over In and Out Burger back in LA, however, the price is more expensive, but it's worth it! Made to order and quite yummy. Free toppings. And tons of fries. Oh, please note, there is not a big difference between regular and cajun fries, but I enjoyed myself immensely here. Oh also note that the burgers come with two patties so if you only want one patty, order the "Little" burger. Service is good and fries are not oily and greasy and fresh! Only drawback is they don't sell milkshakes. That would really make this place a five star place. As a serious burger lover, I'd been putting off FIve Guys for a while after reading a lot of mediocre reviews from reliable sources, but my coworkers have been raving about Five Guys for so long, I finally bit the bullet for lunch today. Yelp's "Meh, I've experienced better" 2 stars sums up my experience perfectly. Lemme break it down: Service = great, friendly, fast. free peanuts while you wait which is cool but not quite as fun when you can't throw the shells on the floor like all other peanut-serving establishments I've been to. The Burger = Meh. I got the "small bacon cheeseburger" aka a single tiny and mostly tasteless patty with cheese (a cold slice of American) and a few skimpy pieces of overcooked bacon. I added lettuce (a few shredded pieces), tomato (two fresh slices which together were bigger than the meat patty), grilled onions (a couple tiny pieces, maybe?), and mustard (more than any person ever needs between two buns). I probably should've added A-1 or hot sauce to spice it up, and maybe another sauce would have deterred them from using so much mustard. It tasted like a mustard sandwich and, while I love mustard, this is not a good thing. I do not understand what draws people to this burger. Is it the unlimited free toppings? Mind you, cheese and bacon are not included on the free toppings list, and the things that are - sauce, ketchup, mustard, lettuce, onions, tomato, etc. - are always offered free anywhere, at least in my experience. And applied poorly on top of mediocre meat, no thanks. Fries = Pretty good, greasy, and plentiful. Nothing that special. Total for 2 burgers (one regular, one small), 1 order of fries, and 2 regular sodas = $25. Not worth it. It was still a burger, I would eat here again if my life depended on it, but there are way too many other better burgers in NYC to keep Five Guys on my list. read more

This review is for the Veggie burger at Five Guys. My vegetarian friend suggested we go to this place before we start our night. I thought it was a strange suggestion coming from my friend who is a vegetarian. My friend wanted to try the veggie burger. As for me, I just came from a banquet so I just got to watch my friend eat. We ordered my friends burger and the guy asked what toppings we wanted. We gave him a laundry list of toppings. When we got the burger there was no veggie patty, it was a sandwich of toppings! On par with Shake Shack. The fries (both cajun and reg) are great. The Manhattan location doesn't have much seating - it can get crowded pretty quick. It's best for groups of four or less. The Queens location feels like more of an open space & it's less populated. Be sure to check your burger before you bite - getting what you asked for isn't always a guarantee. I've never had to wait for more than 15, 2o minutes for a burger & I've been there on weeknights, on the weekends & holidays. read more
