Free toppings. And tons of fries. Oh, please note, there is not a big difference between regular and cajun fries, but I enjoyed myself immensely here. Oh also note that the burgers come with two patties so if you only want one patty, order the "Little" burger. Service is good and fries are not oily and greasy and fresh! As a serious burger lover, I'd been putting off FIve Guys for a while after reading a lot of mediocre reviews from reliable sources, but my coworkers have been raving about Five Guys for so long, I finally bit the bullet for lunch today. Yelp's "Meh, I've experienced better" 2 stars sums up my experience perfectly. Lemme break it down: Service = great, friendly, fast. free peanuts while you wait which is cool but not quite as fun when you can't throw the shells on the floor like all other peanut-serving establishments I've been to. The Burger = Meh. I got the "small bacon cheeseburger" aka a single tiny and mostly tasteless patty with cheese (a cold slice of American) and a few skimpy pieces of overcooked bacon. I added lettuce (a few shredded pieces), tomato (two fresh slices which together were bigger than the meat patty), grilled onions (a couple tiny pieces, maybe?), and mustard (more than any person ever needs between two buns). I probably should've added A-1 or hot sauce to spice it up, and maybe another sauce would have deterred them from using so much mustard. It tasted like a mustard sandwich and, while I love mustard, this is not a good thing. I do not understand what draws people to this burger. Is it the unlimited free toppings? Mind you, cheese and bacon are not included on the free toppings list, and the things that are - sauce, ketchup, mustard, lettuce, onions, tomato, etc. - are always offered free anywhere, at least in my experience. And applied poorly on top of mediocre meat, no thanks. Fries = Pretty good, greasy, and plentiful. Nothing that special. Total for 2 burgers (one regular, one small), 1 order of fries, and 2 regular sodas = $25. Not worth it. This review is for the Veggie burger at Five Guys. My vegetarian friend suggested we go to this place before we start our night. I thought it was a strange suggestion coming from my friend who is a vegetarian. My friend wanted to try the veggie burger. As for me, I just came from a banquet so I just got to watch my friend eat. We ordered my friends burger and the guy asked what toppings we wanted. We gave him a laundry list of toppings. When we got the burger there was no veggie patty, it was a sandwich of toppings! On par with Shake Shack. The fries (both cajun and reg) are great. The Manhattan location doesn't have much seating - it can get crowded pretty quick. It's best for groups of four or less. The Queens location feels like more of an open space & it's less populated. Be sure to check your burger before you bite - getting what you asked for isn't always a guarantee. After reading the Burger Joint vs. Five Guys debate, I couldn't hold in my curiousity and made my trip to Five Guys just to come to my own conclusion: Eh. Five Guys offers tons more toppings for FREE (who would ever turn down anything free??) but despite the hot sauce/relish/onions/mushrooms/pickles medley, the burger itself was not as tasty as Burger Joint. The buns weren't grilled so they were pretty bland as well. Five Guys wasn't nearly as greasy as Burger Joint, and we all know that that's what makes food taste so good. The fries at Five Guys WERE delicious and VERY Cayenne Pepper-y. My friend, however, likes the more salty traditional fry and preferred Burger Joint. Still, Five Guys' cajun fries made the place all the more redeeming. Add on that Five Guys in this location is full of neon lights and white walls gives it a sterile and cold feeling. It's nice that you can order a burger from this place and get the toppings you want on it at no additional cost. All too often I order a sandwich that costs, say $6.00, and by the time I add just condiments alone, I'm doling out 10 dollars for the final product. So, if you're looking for unhealthy, reasonably priced and delicious burgers in midtown, the 5 Guys Burgers and Fries is your place! What a damn fine burger. I have been holding off on going to Five Guys for far too long. In an effort to not eat at "chain" locations for burgers, I've waited too long. Step aside Shake Shack...you have some serious competition. Your little burgers and "special" sauce with "crinkly" fries can suck it. The burgers at Five Guys could take you outside, twist your scrawny little arm and make you cry uncle in about 13 seconds. The fries...oh dear God...the fries. I don't know how else to describe the taste of perfectly made fries other than this: crispy, hot, flavorful, moist, delicious...perfect. Add to the perfect serving of fries my burger with lettuce, tomato, pickle, mayo, ketchup, mustard, grilled onions (at no extra charge) and A-1 sauce...and you have yourself a mean meal, my friends. There are so many great things to say about Five Guys. Let's start with their burgers...they're juicy, made-to-order, and have a huge selection of toppings to choose from. Next, their portions are ridiculously large. I mean, they give you an extra scoop of fries JUST BECAUSE! They also offer peanuts (in the shell) that you can nosh on while waiting for your burger. This mid-Atlantic import is finally in Manhattan. The burgers are huge - even a one-patty "Little Cheeseburger" is enough to fill you up... especially with a side of fries, which they PILE into your take-out bag. You actually have to dig through these fresh-cut fries (the board near the registers will tell you where the potatoes are from) just to get to your burger. Don't be intimidated by the line - despite its length and a bumpy opening, the line moves fast now, and even when it's out to the door, I can usually get through in 30 minutes. Some people LOVE five guys burgers (like my bf), however, like the number of stars I'm giving them, they are "meh" to me. They do make the burgers fresh, and they do load on free condiments and toppings for you to pick and choose from. However, you pick and choose when you order and for some reason, they always get mine wrong! They do have unique fries (long and semi-fat -- in between shoestring and steak fries) with a nice cajun spice, but the portions are way too gargantuan...I disapprove (b/c I'm likely to eat more than I should!). However, at the end of the day, I think the burgers just don't taste as good as those at In'N'Out. I think it's because I am addicted to the Spread. read more

This place ROCKS! The burgers. Two sizes, one is "jr" which is Human size, the regular is for HUNGRY people. Two patties. The buns are a bit mushy but the burgers are GREAT. Just enough grease to be comfort food. The bacon cheese burger was amazing. The fries. Let me tell you about them. They are crispy and cooked JUST right. The plain seasoned ones are to DIE for and the cajun have just enough kick. There is NO NEED for ketchup, these fries are delish NAKED!! Yay for NAKED FRIES. CALL AHEAD for large orders. The place is packed at lunch time and they said they DO NOT deliver. But it's worth the trouble to carry a huge greasy back back to the office! Warning: do NOT eat this food if you have a 2 PM meeting. You will be in a happy carb/fat coma and just want to sleep. I was nodding off at my desk. So I've cut down on my meat intake a lot over the past year, red meat is a 1-2 times a month max for me so when I have had it I usually felt either fulfilled or too ill to think about having it again, especially burgers. Before I'd just grab a quick double cheese from McDonalds and of course I felt absolutely awful afterwards, but I haven't had one of those in at least 8 months. So when my friends suggested we try Five Guys out it happened to be in a period when I had a beef craving so I go along. Quite possibly the best burger I've ever had. Things I love about this place: 01. Most important, you tell them what you want on it, not what you don't want, and when you are notoriously picky like me that's a huge plus. 02. They have green peppers (?!) never tried that but it complimented my burger really well. 03. Fries are top notch to, gotta go for the Cajun though. 04. Very reasonably priced. So overall I definitely suggest it, they even have a vegetarian option, but it's not a veggie pattie, but rather they grill a bunch of vegetables and put it on the bun, from what I've heard that is really good to! But hell, even if that isn't your bag, stick around for the fries. read more

They have bins of peanuts that are good while you wait which brings me to... Service: It stinks. The lines are forever. It's hard to believe there is a recession when the people who work there can have jobs. If you go any time between 12-3 during the week, plan to wait 20-30 to get your food. Soggy burger, double patty, excellent Cajun fries I heard about this place being one of the top burger places, although thus far, I'm underwhelmed by all these burger places. I guess my taste is unique or I just don't like paying so much for a burger. I ordered a regular hamburger from them with the "all the way" option minus jalapeno, chili sauce, which means I'm getting all the fixings (mayo, onions, mushrooms, and a ton of stuff I'm forgetting) and a side of Cajun fries. The fries was excellent. Just enough kick to make it one of the best fries I ever had. The burger was another story. Maybe I shouldn't have concentrated on the fries so much at first, but the burger bun was soggy when I unwrapped it. Nothing makes a burger worst than a soggy bun. The double patty was unexpected, and that combined with the fries made it very fulfilling, a much bigger portion than Burger Joint. But the meat overall was bland. The sogginess and bland tasting burger definitely knocked down the score for me. read more

The closest thing NYC has to In n Out. ~Five Guy's Burger~ Let me start by saying Burger Joint has some serious competition especially since it's only a few blocks away. Start off with your own little bucket of fun (free!) salty peanuts in the shell while you wait. Then with fresh ingredients from the meat to over 8 free condiments with your ( the smaller version) burger including grilled onions, veggies and lots more, its a great meal for under $5! The fries could have used a little more salt, but they were good. This placed gets packed during normal meal times, but is great for groups (4-8) after those standard rush hour times. Long time fan of 5 Guys and my go to fast food burger in life. All I can say is I wonder if the poor franchise owner of this 55th st location ever secretly shops his business. If not, he should. He would fire most of the employees. Screaming obscenities at each other, slow beyond belief etc etc. As I waited and waited for my burger I watched as parents of younger children cringe. They all looked as though they wanted to cover their kids ears. As a New Yorker, I have tough skin but Even I was taken a back and embarrassed for my city. If you are the owner of this location, grab a hat and sunglasses and have lunch in your restaurant. And do it before corporate 5 Guys beat you to it. FYI, burger was good but not as good as other 5 Guys locations. Semi cold from sitting on the counter too long as employees were swearing at each other and messing around. Five Guys has the best burger I've eaten in New York and I've had the good ones. Awesome bun, big patties, melted cheese everywhere and tons of hearty toppings. The fries are fresh ala In & Out and worth the price. Free refills and fast service; I couldn't have asked for anything else. This place is absolutely worth the price and trip over any fast food and I think that is competes with almost every bar burger in town. How oh how did it take me so long to make it over?? I was super excited to see this former rarely-indulged-upon guilty pleasure of mine from DC was being brought into Manhattan. Somehow though I never made it over to pay them a visit. Until now... Shortly before hightailing it over to see WallE, my sister and I need to get our beef fix on. No better place than at Five Guys. I've yet to order anything different at a Five Guys... the standard is a little cheeseburger with ketchup, mustard, sauteed onions, and pickles. Sadly, they were pickle-less this particular Friday. Is that legal? Anyhow, the burger was still quite tasty. We of course opted for the cajun fries. Delish. We ordered the small, which if you've been you know comes out to be like 2x the container size as they pile them in with them overflowing into a mass quantity in the bag. If you've ever seen anyone come out of a Five Guys with a soggy looking bag, know they likely are suffering from the fry spill-over factor there. But the fries are some of the best I've ever had. Yummy juicy burger! A cheeseburger consists of 2 patties, most likely to decrease the cooking time while still giving you the meatiness of a thicker burger. I love that they allow you to pick your toppings since I am a hater of mayo, mustard and ketchup. I got mine with onion, lettuce, pickle and hot sauce. Perhaps my expectations were too high, given the large number of "awards" and "people's choice" accolades it has received. But in the end, I found the hamburgers to be relatively pedestrian compared to what the rest of the city has to offer. I found my experience bordering on what I would expect at McDonald's. I don't dock any points for the thin patties, but they failed to deliver on the more important half of the posted promise of being cooked "well done and juicy". Although the meat is marginally tastier than what you might expect to find at other fast food places, that is a low bar that does not garner any pride points when surpassed. Free condiments with extensive selection? Not a bad thing. The buns? Meh. But the FRIES - oh my goodness, the fries. Order a regular size and they will not only fill (and pile high) a 12 oz styrofoam cup full of potato deep-fried goodness, but they will then place it in a brown paper bag and proceed to flood said bag with ANOTHER heaping scoop of fries. I think they basically double what was in the cup. I love the seasoning on the fries, and appreciate how they are fresh and crispy, straight out of the fryer. Ironically, Five Guys is one of the places that DON'T serve the thin, McDonald-esque french fries that irritate me so. These toothsome, hardy beasts are certainly a credit to the Five Guys establishment, and I would rank them a close second behind my standing favorite fries at Shake Shack. Or third, if you count the pickle chips at Stand as a plausible french fry alternative. I've seen some debate about Burger Joint vs. Five Guys. Burger Joint, hands down. Heard some friends rave about this place, so naturally stopped by after shopping on 5th. No place to sit, really nice cashier, and bags of potatoes stacked at the register that just scream 'look our fries are fresh from idaho.' Being my 3rd lunch of the day, I opted to go for the classic burger with A1, and veggies. 15 minutes later, and $6 lighter, I was ready to be blown away. Yes, the line was long and it took my 45 minutes to get a cheeseburger and fries. However, that cheeseburger and fries may have been the best I have ever had. They give you tons of (free) options for what you want on your burger (I went for fried onions and mushrooms on top of the standard ketchup-mustard-lettuce-tomato-pickle), and their fries are really, really good and come in regular or cajun (a little spicy, a lot delicious). The quality of ingredients (especially the beef) they use is exceptional. If you have some time to stand in line, this may well be the best burger in the city and is definitely worth the wait. read more

Mmm. Cajun Fries. Went here for lunch one day.. I think after it just opened. What a freaking mess! So many people were in there, but the wait wasn't long. There were barrels of peanuts about, free for the taking-- but I'm not one for eating stuff that open to the public. However, what a cute idea since all there stuff is fried in peanut oil. Good luck finding a clean table though, not only here but at any of the Five Guys in the Tri-State. But be sure to order the cajun fries and get yourself some malt vinegar to dip those babies in! The hamburger is a bit too much for me, so for the average person with an average appetite.. I'd say you're good with a little hamburger and top it with whatever you'd like! read more

The first time I went here, I took my order to go and I wasn't impressed when I got home. The fries were soggy and I just thought it was ok. The second time I went, I was starving and ate there. It was SO MUCH BETTER! The fries were crispy and delicious, the buns were soft and sweet, and the combination was just everything I could have asked for. I think this place beats Burger Joint. YUM YUM. Oh and I love how they have a smaller burger portion! It makes me feel less guilty. =) read more

I love five guys but I had a horrible customer experience at the one on 55th st and 6 av. The oldest waiter of the restaurant started to take my order but seemed pissed because I wasn't going fast enough, he just left without saying anything and one of his colleague just took his place to take the order. In the end my order was wrong, probably because of the switch of waiters, but I can totally understand that people can make mistakes. The thing is, that after doing the line again and ordering again I met the first guy again who literally yelled at me while I was trying to get through the all process of making the perfect burger. In the end I gave him the life advice to be kind to people (I was smiling and trying to be nice) and he got so pissed that he told me I couldn't sit in 'his' restaurant, he told me to eat outside, it was 22º F/-6ºC. Great Burgers! Even though you may not feel that great later on. Still worth it! Since I went to school in Virginia I knew about 5 Guys and how great they are. I wouldn't say the best burger in NYC but def better than some other chain/fast food restaurant. Great location in midtown even though you may feel like it doesn't really fit right near 5th Avenue. You can choose between a single or double pattie. You pay a little bit more for a burger but you can have all the free toppings you want. Fries are a must (i personally enjoy the cajun fries). Don't forget the free peanuts in the bin (however the place hasn't been littered yet of peanut shells like other Five Guys I have been to. They accept credit cards which might be a new thing for Five Guys, but I have always known them to be cash only. Tastes great but depends on how it hits your stomach. Still love going! read more

BUT (at least this location) they have the absolute worst customer service i have ever experienced !!!!! honest - i'm a very patient guy. i have worked in food service for over 20 years. i understand mishaps and you cant always get what you want. however- these GUYS go out of their way to treat you like a piece of crap. in a nutshell- ordered food online about 2 months ago- my order was somehow confused with another. the other order cancelled. so over a 2 hour period- including a call from the delivery guy i never received my food. pissed. so i wait a couple of weeks and calm down- i decide to order again- this time i decide to pick it up to avoid confusion. they state online that if you order ahead your food will be ready when you get there- excluding the fries- which they want to make fresh. sounds good! uh uh. when i get to this location its obvious that they havent even begun to make my order. and i'm the only customer at the counter! waiting waiting- pissed! i wait a few more weeks to calm down- decide to try again- i love to torture myself i guess. i order online. 10 minutes goes by- i get a call from the location " i'm the delivery manager- i just fired our delivery person. you will not be getting your food delivered. do you want to pick it up?" um no...thats why i ordered online for delivery? thinking in my little brain...if you are the delivery manager and you just fired your delivery person....i guess you dont have anything to manage and you are out of a job too?! btw they charged me for the food. it took phone calls and 5 days to get my money back. i email 5 guys and tell them my horror stories. i get a call from an HR person. very nice-polite. she sends me 15 dollars worth of gift cards. BF got the bacon cheeseburger w/ lettuce, tomato - loved it! I got cheeseburger w/ lettuce, tomato, grilled mushroom, pickles and jalapeno... MAN the burger was so large it's insane! loved it it was good burger but it wasn't like "it's the best burger ever!!". We also got the cajun fries (regular), and the guy behind the counter apparently just scoop a big chunk of friends and just throw it in the paper bag, it was at least a pount of fries!! SO MUCH!! i didn't like the fries, it was just potato and smushy/greasy, it's not crispy or anything... overall, it's a good burger joint, but we live on the UES won't specifically make a trip out here for the burger.
