I have to rate at least one of these unholy outposts for burger satan himself. It's not that it's bad. The burger is a decent size and the price is right. I have to give this place props for consistently keeping their prices reasonable. They offer a fairly basic selection of burgers, cheeseburgers, hotdogs, and some sandwich options. Toppings are included so just lay them on. While waiting for your burger, help yourself to some peanuts. I don't know why you would want to eat these peanuts that are lying around randomly, but go for it if you're so hungry you can't wait even 10 minutes for your burger to come out. Go ahead, I won't judge (out loud). A normal order of fries is large enough to serve a family of 10 and all immediate cousins. If anything, this place will completely fill every inch of your stomach and then push uncomfortably into your esophagus, all for a decent price. It's just that none of this food is good in any way, shape or form. No, not at all. It's a passable burger but the meat is never cooked the way you want it. The fries are so plentiful cause they suck. Big cut, oily, wilted, and all other adjectives you wouldn't want your fries described as. At least they aren't frozen. As any kind of normal, health conscious person I say just don't come here. If you're going to add to your caloric intake, at least make sure it tastes good. read more

Everything about my experience here was fine, the lady taking my order was quick and resilient, almost admirable in her ability to move the line fast and in an orderly fashion... however, when i was waiting for my order, one of the workers had yelled a number i could not hear, so i said a simple "what." That lead him to stop working and give me a talk about how i "needed to respect him, and that he did not care about whether I was a customer or not," all over the simple phrase "what." I agree that my execution could have been better but this is the first time i have ever been confronted by such rude service. Having been working in the food industry before, I understand that after a long day an individual might get frisky but this was totally out of line. To be fair, I don't eat beef... so I can't rate the burgers, BUT I can rate the atmosphere and the vegetarian grilled cheese! So I actually arrived at Five Guys with friends expecting them to also serve turkey burgers. Boy, I was wrong... at least they had grilled cheese... Ok, that's not SO BAD. Anyway, waited in a line for about 5-10 minutes and made my order. Also ordered a large size fries. Found a table to sit down at -- it was very cramped. Ate some peanuts that they have lying all over the place (whether in little tins, barrels... and stepped over shells on the floor). Waited for my order in a huge crowd. I was #80, but they were only on #60 when I ordered. About 10-15 minutes later, had our orders.. sat down to eat. My grilled cheese also had lettuce, tomato, pickle, melted swiss, mushrooms and friend onions. It was on a regular hamburger bun. I bit into it and it was pretty good, but it also immediately began to fall apart. By the end, a good 1/4th of my grilled cheese was on the foil that I had discarded on the table. Fries were very tasty. Soggy at the bottom of the cup (and they used a Styrofoam cup to contain the fries... talk about bad for the environment). I'd probably just go for a regular size next time. I looked at the receipt later and noticed that they charged me $4.50 for the grilled cheese when it said $3.50 on the menu... oh well, one measly dollar... but still noted in my mind. Five guys is definetly one of the best burgers spots in the city. Fresh made burgers and fries with every order. You can't go wrong with that. You can choose from just about any toppings that would be good with a burger. The double patties are juicy and the melted cheese just adds to the taste when you have your first bite. Fries are great as they are seasoned pretty good. Five guys also gives it's customers complimentary peanuts. The only bad thing is that they don't have meals. You pay a steep price for each individual thing you order. You can easily spend $17 bucks on a meal. Take a day out of the week and spoil yourself. It's worth it. read more

Living on the west coast, I've only really heard about this place so upon seeing one, I decided I had to give it a try. Walking in, it was pretty packed. I ordered a cheeseburger and you get your choice of what you want on the burger and they will add it on to your burger. Not knowing much about the place, I was hungry and ordered fries and a drink. Once I got my meal, it was huge. The burger is big, not really a need for fries to be quite honest. The fries were decent, nothing spectacular. It seems to be my luck here in New York that fries are a bit of an after thought. In this case it was OK because the burger was big. I was full from my drink and burger alone. I should have known better when I saw several people ordering just the burger or splitting an order of fries. Since I was alone when I ordered, I figured why not right? Try the entire experience, but it wasn't needed. As for the burger, it had decent flavor. I think it really filled me up more than packed a lot of taste. Yes, I had cheese which gave it more flavor but that was about it really. I wasn't too impressed but it wasn't a horrible burger. Choosing to eat at Five Guys is an exercise in economics. The quality of the burger itself isn't special at all. It's greasy, it's well done, with thin patties, and it's cooked to order in 5 minutes. It tastes like any number of other burgers out there, including: Burger Heaven, Viand's, Gene's Coffee Shop, a non-mayo'ed Burger King, and In-N-Out Burger (Yes, this implies that In-N-Out is not that great. Yes, I said it. It had to be said). Therefore, selecting between these choices is a matter of prioritizing your needs and optimizing your $$$ in the process. Do you want to be served? Then go for Viand's, Burger Heaven or Gene's. Do you just want a plain patty on a bun? Go to Burger Heaven. Do you want fries with that? Go to Gene's and pay $8 for the whole thing. Do you hate being waited on, and want a fully topped out burger, with no fries and no drink? Then! Five Guys is your spot. It's ridiculous that they charge $3 for a fountain drink. You'd be better served taking your burger out or sneaking in a bottle you've bought beforehand. $10 for a cheeseburger and a drink? Yikes. read more

One of the loveliest dilemmas of my life involves Burger Joint vs. Five Guys. Five Guys is a little bit cheaper, and is not going to have the 30-person line of European tourists (not that I don't find our European friends to be charming and well-dressed). Being from Northern Virginia, I've known Five Guys since I was a small one. So... there's a nostalgia issue here, but I really do think the little cheeseburger is a a very good cheeseburger. So fresh. Juicy. Soft bun. Their fries are actually great, I think, but they're often too much for this lady. The longstanding Five Guys policy of providing malt vinegar has given me a taste for it whenever I have fries, so I do indeed appreciate it here, when I am hungry enough to add fries to my order. Even the small order, the overfull styrofoam cup you see pictured, is more than enough for me. The burgers struck me as a tad expensive when they first opened in NYC, but of course, it's still a bit cheaper than Burger Joint, so I keep coming back. Also the employees are nice. read more

In a word. Wow. Unlike the insufferable PinkBerry, I'm totally excited these places are sprouting up all over NYC. With this just two blocks away, I don't know know why any one would wait in line over at Burger Joint (yes, I continue my Yelp-wide crusade against the most overhyped burger in New York). This is the first burger where I have to rave about the bun! It's slightly dense but soft and somewhat chewy (think ballpark hotdog bun). Add in the beautifully greasy patties and made to order toppings, and you have a burger that's sure to satisfy anyone's craving from the burger minimalist to the frilly burger evangelist. The french fries here are rough cut, thick and skin on. I'd suggest getting them out of the bag as soon as possible. As with any thick cut fries, they tend to soften up faster than the thin crispy ones. I tend to like thick cut fries better and these have a real nice potato character to them, but I've had my fair share of debates over the merits of different french fry cuts. read more

You can then customize it with whatever toppings you free, thus creating the burger that you can only get in your dreams. On top of this, their cajun fries are fantastic, and if you're with friends, they will dump them all in a bag for you and you get a few extra also. After listening to my favorite radio show back in California (KLLC), where they swooned over the recent opening of a Five Guys in Pleasanton, when I saw it just around the corner from my hotel, of course I had to try it. I've given three stars mainly for the fries. The cajun fries were SO yummy. A little salty on some, soggier than I'd like, but with great flavor. And the small is more than enough to satisfy you if you're having the burger alongside. I didn't come close to finishing the cup. I believe that a great burger starts with great meat. In my opinion, if everything falls off the bread except for the burger meat, you should still be able to have a tasty bite. I didn't find this to be the case with the 5-ers. The meat was bland, and they used processed cheese, which is also bland. I ordered it almost-Barack-style, with mayo, onions, pickles, and jalapenos. Okay, only the jalapenos are Barack-style. But those peppers gave it a nice kick. I should have ordered the grilled onions instead of the regular. Will I return? No. But doesn't mean you shouldn't stop in and give it a whirl fo yoself. read more

I've heard all about the five guys legend and had to try it myself. Pretty much just got a mushroom cheeseburger and enough fries to feed a family. I don't know if I was expecting too much, but this was a pretty basic burger that reminded me of the Billygoat back in Chicago. I'd prefer to have the burger medium rare, which they don't do. For me, Five Guys is the East Coast version of In-N-Out. Not because the burgers and fries taste the same, but it's the spot you hit up when you don't want the mediocrity of popular fast food spots. The prices here are STEEP. I ordered a hamburger, and when I realized that a regular hamburger was actually two patties, I thought to myself "Oh, that explains the price", but then I thought better. My review is only for the 45 west 55st location. I've been a regular customer since they opened. The employees are always pleasant but the restaurant is filthy. On my last visit I was uneasy when I walked in because the grill surface was covered with old pieces of over cooked meat. I ordered anyway because it was later in the evening and I was hungry. My mistake. After placing my order I was surprised when I did not here the usual "one patty" but I did see the grill cook pick up my "one patty" from a greasy pile of old cooked patties and then put a piece of cheese on top and hand it off to the person that adds the condiments. I HAVE THE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE IN ONE OF YOUR FIVE GUYS. Me and my family (we were 8) went to the 43rd W 55th St New York, NY 10019 Five Guys. First of all, we were really excited about going there because we are tourists and some of us had never being to a Five Guys. When we got there, the place was full so we waited until some of the tables opened up then we proceed to fix the table so we could all sit. When we were already sitting, one of the employees, the most rude person I have ever met including the manager of this place, started telling us in a very loud manner that we are not allowed to move the tables and that this is not Ikea to do so (with sarcasm of course) When she finished, she arranged the tables for us taking away one of our tables, when we asked her if we could sit now, she said no that we already had enough tables (not true) and that she needs to have a free table for the other costumers to which we answered that there were no costumers standing like us and that we were already here and were also costumers. She didn't answered so were confused. My sister who was paying for the food then saw that she was talking to a guy in the kitchen and that he start walking towards us with a angry face. He asked my sister if she was with us and then said to her that we needed to move because we were "in a bad position" which is super weird because it was one of his employee who move us. We told him that we understand what he is saying but he doesn't have to speak to us in that way and his answered was " I don't care" in that moment we understood the bad place we were in and that none of this people were logical or even nice humans beings. We asked for our money back because we didn't feel safe by their treatment so my sister recorded my cousin's interaction with the manager just in case something happened. As we were leaving the manager, Amar Monge, called out "dumb people" and her employee took a picture of us. With a lot of help from fellow Yelpers and my main, Jose, at the counter, I came into 5 Guys w/ a gameplan of a single burger (called "Little Burger") a bacon/cheese hot dog and a small cajun order of fries. By design, I came at night to avoid the lunchtime masses, and pretty much had the place to myself. I ordered the burger "all the way" (which means, as Jose pointed out, everything in purple on the list at the counter--I remember lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, ketchup, mushrooms, pickles, and fried onions) and it was as good as advertised. I can't imagine managing the double burger. I was struggling controling my single, what with the softish bun and sliding tomatoes. Having said that, it was awfully good. The fries, well, you've heard it here before, are pretty amazing---hot, fresh, spicy, overflowing in a greasy paper bag---about everything you could ask for. I tried some with ketchup, some with vinegar and some by themselves and I can't decide which was the best way to go (probably the ketchup, but I liiiike ketchup). As for the hot dog, I liked that it was split. It makes for a flatter, easier eat. My problem was not knowing how to dress it beyond the cheese and bacon (or in lieu of the cheese and bacon). I'll take some advice here if anyone wishes to share. Finally, my visit was marred slightly by the unbearably bad lighting in the place. I know it's fast food, but there's really no excuse for flourescent lights. They had fixtures and I suggested to Jose to try turning off the flourescents just to see what the place would look like bathed in softer more forgiving lighting. Eventually it became clear that my all the lights are on one switch and if he turned off the lights I was suggesting, the kid manning the french fryer could actually die. Understanding that poor lighting is a minor qualm, I begged off of my request. No one listens to me anyhow. read more

They have other stuff, hot dogs and such and they're probably good but I haven't got past the burgers yet. UNLESS YOU HAVE A HUGE STOMACH DONT BE FOOLED. THE LITTLE CHEESEBURGER IS BIG! You don't need the regular size okay. Plus with the fries they give you which is always extra, you'll be stuffed. If you dont like cajun spice like Tony Chachere get your fries non spiced. I don't understand how a small fry, small drink, and the one patty little burger end up being over $10, but they are. Plus the fries used to be a major selling point for me because they are so damn delicious but lately they have been skimping on them. Since this place is becoming quite a franchise, I wonder how much longer it will keep to its "best burgers in a fast food joint that does not taste like poison afterwards" ways. The patty is actually of decent quality seeing that this is a fast food joint (not frozen as far as I know and a good size), add on top a clean looking place where you can usually see what they are cooking (also rare!), PLUS loads of free toppings to choose from including green peppers, sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onions and HALLO you got yourself the best fast good burger you can buy for ~five bucks! So, my other half had a number of missions for our New York adventures - one being to find the best burgers in New York. Five Guys was shortlisted as a must-try venue. Following a stroll (read: shopping trip) across town, I was starving by the time we arrived. We deliberated for a while over what the difference was between a regular and a small burger and concluded that it must just mean a smaller burger... how wrong we were! A regular burger contains two beef patties, while a small only contains one. We ordered our burgers and fries and settled in for a taste. The burger is nice enough. My combination was a bit messy though (mushrooms seemed to make the bun go soggy). Generally, a nice burger... but no fireworks. I'm not sure if it was over-sold to me by my other half so I expected too much, or if it really is just a standard burger. For what it's worth, I would probably go into any fast food chain for a burger, rather than trek across town to come here specially. I fell in love with Five Guys when I was in DC a few yrs ago. Unfortunately I have broken up with Five Guys and eloped with Shake Shack. I heard that Five Guys was opening a few stores in NYC and i was excited! ESPECIALLY one so close to my work! this was amazing! I stopped by and got a few burgers and mmmm after my first bite i was in heaven again. I am extremely pleased that Five Guys still tastes the same as it did in DC. Unfortunately Five Guys is not as messy as its DC counter part with peanuts all over the ground. I went to the one in georgetown it was awesome. Anyways Five guys burgers are extremely tasty but nothing compared to shake shack. What i do enjoy is the wide range of toppings. Thats awesome and their fries are amazing. Now shake shack could rule the world if they just got rid of those NASTY ass fries they have there and just make fries like Five Guys. These fries are heavenly good. I love their cajun fries too. Thats the best!. I shove a few of these in my burger sometimes just so i can get a huge mouthful of everything delicious! Five guys keeps it simple and sometimes simple is the best. Yes, this place is legit. I admit that this is one of the first burger joints that I've tried in NYC since moving here, so I may not be on the up and up when it comes to burgers here. However, I come from the west coast and that means I know In N Out - if you haven't been there, you need to head over to virginamerica.com, book a flight to LA and get one, seriously, they are that good. So, I'm kind of an elitist when it comes to burgers, you could say. So I went to Five Guys a bit skeptical thinking that it'll probably be pretty good, but nowhere compare to a double-double. I'll tell you that it does compare, it's is damn good. I'm not saying that this place is as good as In N Out, but it'll do until In N Out decides to expand out west. The burger is juicy, the fries are awesome and I feel like ass now, the sign of a good burger! I will say that it was a ton of food, much more than I expected, so be prepared. Great Washington D.C burger chain. This location is the first Five Guys chain I've been to and ever since then I've been resorting to come here for their juicy burgers and their hand cut potato fries. They make your food to order so you are for sure going to get a hot burger with the toppings. You can have your way. With A-1 Sauce, hot sauce, jalapenos, onions, mushrooms whatever you like. Sometimes on Saturday afternoons, I frequent this location because my cousin works at the peninsula hotel down the block and we come here to savor the greasy overstuffed burgers along with the fries. The hand cut fries are the best when you drouse the fries with malt vinegar. On top of that, while you are waiting for your order, you can have as much peanuts as you want since it's out by the seating area and you can take as much as you want!! If you are allergic to the peanuts... then I guess you can drink as much soda as you want since it's free refills. p.s- why do all the burgers have to be made well done. GOD dammit. read more

Normally I like five guys, and rate it 4-4.5, but this location is not so hot. I give it a 2-2.5. I was really excited to finally try the Cajun fries.. and when I had ordered I had clearly said Cajun fries.. and when the guy double checked if I wanted a large I repeated loudly "Yes, Large CAJUN fries Please" .. he relayed "Large Cajun fry" and I quickly said "Thank you." Unfortunately, even though there were more staff than customers, the staff were distracted. I saw someone bringing in a tray of dunkin donuts shakes to the back after I ordered and could here the girls in the chicken chatting/giggling. My fries were definitely NOT Cajun, in fact they were not seasoned at all.. usually my fries come a little seasoned and crisped but these guys were a soggy mess. I really think the fry guy got distracted and double dipped my fries in the oil, instead of putting them in the seasoning after the oil. ICK... don't get me wrong I love fried greasy foods! But these were just soggy & bland! I was soo sad because I had high hopes.. and have always enjoyed 5 guys regular fries in the past.. I'm exceptionally averse to wasting any amount of food.. so I brought the fries home.. put them on a plate, pressed a paper towel down to soak up some of the extra grease, seasoned them myself with a salt, pepper, garlic, spice blend and reheated them in the microwave. They were still all soft & greasy.. I had to eat them with a fork LOL. Dipped in my own spicy mayo and ketchup, they ended up being pretty good and I was able to salvage them. But man was that a lot of work to get them to be edible.. and most people probably don't have the luxury of a full stocked kitchen nearby.. I love onions but they put way too much of the raw onions on my sandwich! The grilled onions were perfect, and I like raw onions.. but it was overkill.. I think I had onion coming out of my pores for the next 24 hours!
