I never write Yelp reviews but when I do, it is when a restaurant is EXCEPTIONALLY BAD. The food is alright, but the people working there are absolutely the worst. It took them, 4 people in the kitchen, 25 minutes to get me an order of just small fries! The worst part is, I was the only customer that ordered recently at 3 PM when it is the least busiet time of the day. During those 25 minutes, they fooled around the restaurant and knocked over stuff all over the floor. They also let a crazy homeless with his shopping cart inside the store and let him scavenge the garbage bins... UNBELIEVABLE!!! My wife and I were hungry for a great burger and since we hadn't tried the new 5 Guys in downtown Santa Cruz, we thought we'd give it a shot. "Cheap" it is not. Good it is not. We were very disappointed in the burger and fries, thinking it would be on par with In n Out burger. I don't know what the hype is all about, but one thing is for sure: we are not going back. My burger was bland, even though it had so many goodies added to it. The sautéed mushrooms and onions created a very slick surface for the bun, and the double patties slid around, making a big mess. This place provides good value, interesting options for your burger such as grilled jalapenos and mushrooms, different sauce options, sizable fries, and free peanuts. Quite inexpensive compared to other restaurants in terms of quality and portion size. Maybe it's not gourmet, who cares, you will never ask "where's the meat" when eating their standard double burger, even if you have them pile veggies on it like me. Way way way (is that enough ways?) better than fast food burgers. Probably the place gets bonus points if you are into milkshakes, as they have a bunch of flavor options and again, it's quite affordable. Went to five guys last night with my family. Spent over 30$ on food and had it turn it out to be super shitty. I ordered a veggie sandwich and it was literally a bun with lettuce between them. The milkshakes were disgusting. Pretty much just milk with a toxic taste to it. I got an Oreo milk shake and it was pretty much just vanilla. Customer service was horrible as well. If you're going to charge people so much for food make the food better. Get veggie burgers. read more

This is for the Santa Cruz branch, bas service and your staff to include your managers need "customer service training." It's really....really sad when someone orders a milk shake, wait 15 minutes, is then told it was already served up. I give the three star review because they managed to forget bacon on the bacon cheeseburger three times in a row when I went there - and their bacon is the main reason that I attend this establishment. The burger is OK. The bun is so-so, the Kraft-esque cheese is lousy, and the patty's general lack of flavor is masked by loads of sloppy fat. Seriously, their bacon cheeseburger has 148 percent of the saturated fat you need in a day. Five Guys is famous for its greasy French fries, the smell of which wafts all over downtown. I can often smell the scent when I'm sitting at my office desk trying to work--kinda disgusting. Inside, the joint blasts hokey-ass classic rock Pandora stations a too loud. And apparently, you're missing out unless you order A1 steak sauce on your burger, which is pretty much a sign that the sandwich itself is lacking. I have heard that certain Five Guys locations are better than others, so perhaps Santa Cruz has simply gotten shafted by a lazy franchise owner. It's a shame that there isn't an In-N-Out here in the county. Because their Double Double is MUCH better than this stuff and for only a third of the price. Still if you are looking for a solid burger around here, I'd recommend, Jack's, Betty's (in Seabright), Burger-Dot, Surfrider Cafe, the 515, Gabriella Cafe or the Red Restaurant and Bar. But... if you happen to be at this VERY intersection and in need of something fast/cheap, I'd suggest The Sandwich Spot across the street. read more

If you want a fast food eatery with expensive prices don't look elsewhere. I have visited twice in the last year and have regretted it both times. In my opinion, proven true twice, Five guys is just a lot of hype. It's like having a name brand without a 'good brand' of reputable food. Chili's is next door and their hamburger dishes are actually cheaper and delicious. I can take my family to chili's get a great burger and I'm served at the same time for less. Honestly, if it wasn't for our summer tourists, who visit are beautiful area, they would probably have gone under by now. There is a lot better hamburger joints in town. I've only visited Five Guys when traveling. When home, I find I can do much better for the cost. The only real reason to visit Five Guys is for their french fries, which are thick cut and cooked to perfection, way better than most fries at a fast food joint. A "regular" size is enough for two people (though I'll eat the entire batch when alone) and it cost FOUR DOLLARS!! Four dollars for french fries? Anyway, Five Guys is akin to In 'n Out, but far more expensive. Personally, if I'm going to be eating all that fat and carbs, I prefer to walk across the street and get a couple slices of Pizza My Heart's award winning pizza . . . and even have a few extra bucks left in my pockets. Overall, the food at Five Guys is tasty, but overpriced in my opinion for its generic flavor. read more

What can I say. If you're looking for a few choice fries in a big brown bag, this is the place. They have those soda machines with like 100 different types which is also a plus. As a Tourist I can say that the burger was better than McDonalds or Burger King. My Creation was a Bacon Burger with Lettuce, Onions, Ketchup and Mayo and it was a great taste experience! I can only recommend Five Guys! read more

Ha! Not surprised this location has horrible reviews/ratings. I've been to many Five Guys locations and actually worked at one when I was younger. This store is NOT how Five Guys presents themselves. I was shocked. I came in a couple weeks ago on a Monday right after they had just opened. The only reason was to use the bathroom because nothing else was open yet. We walked in & weren't even greeted. I said "Do you mind if I use your bathroom? I will buy a drink after, I just reallllly need to go." The grey shirt grabbed a cup & said "that'll be $2.71" with attitude. There was literally NO ONE in the store except for myself & my friend. As if I was going to use the bathroom & book it or something. I thought it was very tacky & unprofessional that he had insisted on ringing me up before using the bathroom. I had no issue paying for the drink, the price was obviously ridiculous. I'm sure people use the bathroom without paying all the time when the store is busy. I was completely shocked how rude the grey shirt was. I hope Five Guys finds people to better represent themselves. I walked out of the bathroom & threw the empty drink cup in the trash. No one said a word. I definitely won't come here again. & according to the other reviews, the food is just as bad as the service. read more

Worst customers service ever! I asked for the bathroom code and was told it was for " paying customers only" I politely tried to tell her I was planning to order as soon as I used her restroom. She embarrassed me by saying very loudly to everyone in the restraint again it was for paying customers only. I told her o didn't want to take my food to the restroom with me... she again very loudly insulted me in front of everyone I. These folks run a clean business, and they keep the place tidy. I love every Five Guys burger (even/especially the Veggie Sandwich! Yum!) but these employees go out of their way to make a solid sammie. Our burger was falling apart with all the yumminess inside, and when we asked them to reassemble it, they made a gorgeous new one with no less deliciousness. First of all, I'm disappointed that you can't give 0 star reviews on yelp!! Went here with my girlfriends for lunch. We all ordered chocolate shakes as well as fries. The fries came within 10 minutes of ordering, but they were greasy and cold. They reminded me of fingers dipped in lotion. We had a time crunch, and we had gone to five guys expecting FAST food! Unfortunately, five guys only caters to the greasy and disgusting aspect of that. Employees were rude. We gently reminded them that we had ordered chocolate shakes, not vanilla, as one employee began to make us vanilla shakes. Instead of throwing them in the trash, he decided to chuck the shake against the wall, covering us in spattered vanilla shake. Without another word, he began making the chocolate shakes instead. After filling a cup halfway, the machine began to spark and whir, finally exploding and covering us in yet more shake. The employee remained unconcerned, telling us, "This happens all the time". The rude behavior continued, he denied to offer us napkins to clean up the explosion of shake drenching us from head to toe. He then preceded to hand all three of us our disturbingly clumply light brown milkshakes. They tasted just as bad as they looked, thin, and with potentially rancid milk. We left the restauraunt furious, and the employee had the nerve to say come again our way out. Needless to say we wont heed that request. read more

Went here over the weekend and I was incredibly disappointed. The food is over priced for a "fast food" place. I ordered a burger and fries, it cost me about $16! Ridiculous. But specific to this location; there was only about 3 people waiting for food, including myself, and it took about 25 minutes for my meal to come out. The person I got the meal for said the burger was good, which is why there are two stars. But the fries were disgusting. The women who rung me up at the register was nice and the facility wasn't spotless but it wasn't a disaster either, so two stars. But honestly I will never go back to this place because it's very over priced, took WAY too long and just wasn't quality food. read more

I have been here several times and the music is always on full blast. Some of the music is not appropriate for a family restaurant.
