My fiancé and I had some of my family in town and planned a great dinner out for a nice steak. After much research we decided on Five O'Clock Steakhouse due to the great reviews on this being one of the best supper clubs in the nation and making it onto Forbes top 25 places to visit list. My cousin and I are steak connoisseurs, so we were a bit nervous going in reading some of the reviews on the steak. However, the reviews on ambiance still had our attention. We got an 8:30 reservation and were told to please take a seat at the bar upon arrival. They had a great blues singer in the bar which provided an outstanding atmosphere for us to enjoy some old fashioneds as the ladies picked out some martinis. I'll break this review into 5 categories: atmosphere, food, drinks, service, and value: Atmosphere: 9.4/10. Easily the claim to fame for this place. Worth the visit because of the atmosphere alone. Bartenders were friendly and made great drinks as we waited for our table. The live music was a great touch in the bar. At our seat we were placed against the wall, but had plenty of room from the other tables. A true old time supper club feel and one of the best I've ever visited. Food: 5.7/10. This is where we felt let down. We were nervous reading the reviews on the steak being a bit bland, but figured those reviewers were nitpicking. However, we all agreed. The steak portions were very generous. I had the bone in ribeye, my cousin had the prime rib, and the ladies both went with the 8oz steer tenderloin. We all ordered medium rare and the steaks were each cooked to perfection. This is where the praise ends. As I mentioned, our table has some serious experience eating quality steaks. While the steak quality wasn't in question, the flavor was certainly lacking. The steak was sitting in a pool of mushroom au jus and lacked the simplest of flavors needed of salt and pepper. Pretty bland simple meat flavor. We all expected much more for the price we paid. Apart from the steaks, the bread at our table was fresh and satisfying as well as the salad with a house made ranch. Drinks: 9.2/10. Where the food lacked, the drinks shined! We loved the old fashioneds. They were freshly muddled in front of us. Be sure to call your whiskey or they will use a rail fleischmann's whiskey. We went with Bulleit and they were fantastic. The girls also raved over the martinis. They went with the key lime and the starburst flavors. Service: 7.3/10. The service was great. Our server met us at the bar and introduced himself. Let us know we could enjoy a drink or two and the people sitting at our future table we're finishing up. No pressure at all. You order your food at the bar and are seated with a table salad ready to enjoy. Our French onion soup and table bread came out shortly after we were seated. Our waiter was very attentive, filled our waters frequently, ensured our drinks were full, and kept us up to date on everything going on. Where this section loses points was at check time. I picked up the bill and asked that they please use the $100 value on a visa gift card I had in my wallet and put the rest on my credit card. He understood and left with the check. He then came back and let me know if we're splitting this that the 100 was not half the bill. I informed him it would be just me paying and again explained to just use the whole gift card and then my credit card. He agreed and left again. Finally; he came back with the check complete and swipe receipts, but informed me he could not use the gift card so I should keep it and he just charged it all on my credit card. Not the end of the world but I have never heard of a Visa card not being accepted. Value: 4.2/10. The food was just okay, but truly disappointing for the price point. At nearly $50 per steak, we expected to be truly impressed. This was not the case. The drinks were outstanding, however at $12-$18 per drink, I cannot say the value was great. Our overall experience was great as we enjoyed our time together and the atmosphere and drinks were very good. I would recommend visiting Five O'Clock Steakhouse to enjoy this supper club experience, but do not expect to be blown away by the steaks. read more

Both the food and service was outstanding! The evening started on the right note with the prompt valet service. Entering the bar there was a jazz combo playing setting the relaxed mood. We were seated in the bar and were greeted immediately by a cocktail waitress. After receiving our drinks the waitress for our table arrived to explain the menu. Once at our table the attentive service continued. The star of the evening, however belonged to the steaks all four of us ordered. I'd stack them up with any steak house that I've been to across the US or anywhere else for that matter! Overall it was a superb evening and will be difficult to top! read more

Had dinner here for the first time in around 15 years. It hasn't changed a bit. And that is a good thing as far as we are concerned! Same old school supper club atmosphere, same terrific service, and the same outstanding food. We were a party of four with our companion couple visiting for the first time. I had always told them of our past enjoyment here and was hoping it would still be a winner. It was. Two of us had steaks, and two had prime rib. All portions were huge and cooked to perfection. This restaurant came highly recommended by a co-worker of mine and knowing how much my boyfriend likes a big chunk of red meat, I figured this would be right up his alley. Food: The food here is the pricey part. A steak can run $40-90 easily. A large shareable salad, bread, and relish tray are included with your meal. I had a bacon wrapped filet and my boyfriend had a New York strip steak. Perhaps, this is just my own lack of knowledge, but the bacon was thick cut and ashy gray and practically raw. My steak was delicious as was the parmesan cream sauce it was sitting in! My boyfriend's New York strip wasn't a strip steak, but rather a 5 inch thick hunk of meat the size of a softball. He loved it and I thought it was very good too. Side dishes are extra and are large enough for two people to share. My one big complaint...the way that leftovers are packaged up. To-go containers come in all shapes, sizes, and material types. Here, they come to your table side with plastic bags similar to the produce bags you get in the grocery store. They open one up and just dump everything into a plastic bag, tie it up, and then stick it into a paper bag. It's so nice to be leaving an expensive restaurant with a soft, mushy bag that could potentially leak in transit (sarcasm). I would expect better from a place with this kind of price tag. Service: Our server, Joanie, was wonderful! We never had to hunt her down for anything. She took our order and delivered everything with no issues at all. Atmosphere: The atmosphere here is reminiscent of an old-school supper club. Dark and dimly lit. Nice for a special night out. Community: It's obvious that the community that Five O'Clock Steakhouse is located in has changed a lot since the 1940s...and not for the better. The intersection of 27th and State St. is loaded with the kinds of businesses you would only find in depressed, low-income areas (think currency exchanges, wig shops, and pay day loans). We were about to park on the side street across from the restaurant until my boyfriend noticed some bizarre looks from the neighbors. Granted, my co-worker told me this isn't in the greatest neighborhood, and while I never use valets (I'm perfectly capable of parking my own car) I felt that based on the fact that Five O'Clock has a fully enclosed, gated parking lot that can only be accessed by the valets, that's probably saying something. The 2 valets were both very nice young men (probably students from nearby Marquette University) and I was grateful for their services. Overall, I'd say this was a perfectly nice place to have a special date night dinner, but hardly worth going out of your way for. If you want steak, you can certainly have a meal of comparable quality at Weber Grill, Carson's, or Gibson's. read more

Very average steakhouse, but the ambiance is very special. Let's start with the average part. For the prices 5 o'clock charges I would expect to be very impressed with one item. None. Veggies were bland. The crab mac-n-cheese I was so looking forward to? Kind of fell flat. Cocktails? Just ok. Not terrible by any means. Ambiance - AWESOME. It's like I walked into a scene of the Sopranos. Do yourself a favor and pay close attention to the artwork and random signs. Warning - they do things differently at 5 o'clock. You enter the restaurant and immediately order drinks and sit down at the bar. You order your food from the bar. Your food is prepared THEN and only then do they seat you at your actual dining table. While I know this is an old school steak place, I not a big fan of the what looks to be pan fried or oven baked to caramelize the steak and its Aus Jus sauce was a little bland (tasted more burnt) and not much flavor. Came here to try it because of its legendary status as old school even though its in a sketchy area. For the value I feel it was a bit over priced. Since Im a tourist I had to go to check it out. Delicious! All other steakhouses take note. This is how you do it. From the drinks to the classy staff to the warm lighting and yes the steaks, everything is perfect. I definitely got the feeling that old Italian gangsters in the Prohibition days would've loved meeting here after hours. In this case that is a compliment. This is not just a restaurant, it's an experience. When you first walk in, you are seated at the full bar and greeted by the bartender. You are given the dinner menu while at the bar. The server also takes your order there. Once your first course is ready, you are escorted to your table. The server immediately brings out warm rolls and your first course. We have been coming here for years and it used to be great, by far our favorite steakhouse. Then most recently we had a terrible experience, things have gone way down hill. The evening started by the servers being confused as to who is taking us. Then an hour wait to be seated past our reservation time. An HOUR! Our sever was clearly frazzled and rushed and it was apparent in the service. We ordered an app and a soup....they came at the same time and both were highly disappointing and not to the same level of quality we had experienced here in the past. Before we were even done with our app or soup, or entrees arrived. We felt so rushed. I had half a bowl of soup left that I had to ditch so I could eat my entree before it sat too long. Which it turned out, the entrees already had sat...,under a heat lamp...getting dry and rubbery. We had to send the lobster tails back they were so chewy. Overall we had a very bad experience and to top it off this was supposed to be a lovely meal to indulge and celebrate my husbands birthday. We won't be back, not at those prices. Upon entry you are seated at the bar to wait for your table and waiter will come up to you with a menu to explain, then they will come back in to take your order and then take you to your table. The service I will say is great! restaurant wants to go on nostalgic vibes but I will just say old and dated it can really stand a revamp and still keep its charm with these prices they can afford it. Upon being seated you are greeted with a relish tray, salad and bread great start I order shrimp scampi, ribeye, baked potato, and cream spinach . The steak wasn't anything to write home about meat wasn't tender nor was steak flavorful. Shrimp were fresh but were not very tasty, everything seemed to just be lacking seasoning. Except bake potatoes which was great but I put that together myself. Ended the meal with the cheesecake which was good. For the price would I go back no because there are alot of steakhouses in the city and this one for the price point not worth the visit. read more

This is the best steakhouse I have ever been to, hands down. Me and my boyfriend come here frequently and have had amazing experiences every time. Best place for an anniversary, birthday or special occasion. Tonight we had Caitlin as a server! She was the best server we have ever had here. I will defiantly be requesting to sit in her section from here on out. Everything about this place is amazing. The old school supper club vibe with live music sets the mood. You start off at the bar and place your order while getting some cocktails. If you like Old Fashioned's, this is the best Milwaukee style old fashion. Go for the brandy sour. The food here is unmatched. Starting off you get bread with honey, Wisoc style Relish and salad. Then we get to the good stuff, steak. We normally do the surf and turf, steak and lobster. I have had the prime rib, but the Filet is the best. You have a la carte sides at $5 each, cant be beat. Last but not least, dessert. I normally hate dessert and do not order it. Here they have a magical key like pie, best dessert I have had in my life. If you are debating any steakhouse in Milwaukee or here, come here. Ask for Caitlin, because she is literally the best. The best part about this place is the ambiance. It's atmosphere takes you back to an old style mom and pop eatery. The drinks are wonderful (definitely recommend the key lime martini). The steak was wonderful and cooked to perfection. Family style sides was a fun twist that encouraged us to split things and be able to try a wide array of dishes. Was it the best steak I ever had? Not quite. Definitely in my top five. Pretty pricey, but I felt like I was paying for the experience as well as the food. All in all, not my first choice if I just want a good steak. I've been to places "fancier" than this, but NEVER any as good. The restaurant has that "old-school" vibe and you're literally transported back to a time when going out for steak was a big deal. Service was text-book. Now on to the food. That was very probably the best steak I have EVER eaten. 8 oz. filet, medium-rare (at the chef's suggestion), cooked to PERFECTION (No kidding), unbelievably moist and tender, flavor that will make you jump up and slap yo mama. This place is such a gem in Milwaukee! Holy goodness, what a beautiful filet! We ordered the 16 oz filet, the creamed spinach and a French onion soup. The meal comes with bread and salad. For the salad we had the delicious homemade ranch dressing. The fresh bread was delicious with butter and honey. The French onion soup has a deep rich beef base and was amazing. The creamed spinach was so delicious and was done perfectly. The filet,,, THIS IS THE BEST FILET IN THE USA!! It's charred so beautifully and is perfect rare inside,, and the flavor is amazing! I've eaten filet all over the planet,, no one does a filet like they do! We finished our great meal with a lovely piece of key lime pie, it was delicious too. Went for a birthday party dinner with a table of 9 people, the service was decent but the older two women were kind of aggressive. Food overall was not worth it in my option. I ordered the stuff crab mushroom and they tasted as if they were frozen. I also had the bone in filet mignon and a side of asparagus. The steak was cooked to my liking but nothing I couldn't do at home better and the asparagus was under cooked. For me it just wasn't worth the cost. read more

Interesting old school steakhouse. The decor is so old it's all back in again! I loved the warm atmosphere, old chandeliers, dark lighting, and professional wait staff. This is classic dining with a few twists. First, you sit at the bar enjoying your drink and the waitress comes over and hands you the menu, explaining that she'll take your order here, before being seated. Once seated, you'll enjoy a classic relish tray and family style salad and bread. She gets a few salad dressing preferences to serve on the side in a three cup serving piece. We closed out our drink tab and we're escorted to our table, drinks in tray for the few that had not finished. The salad was fresh and delicious. I calorie splurged and had the blue cheese dressing. Yummy! The bread was warm and crusty. I slided it thin. We ordered the Wisconsin cheese plate. Tip- get the Wisconsin cheese plate!! It had many flavorful cheeses (4 or 5?), nuts, grapes, and jam. It also had slices of bread. I would surely get this again. We also got the crab Mac and cheese and baked potato sides. What was nice is that she split the potato and served it table side. Same for the Mac and cheese but she put the extra Mac and cheese on the table. Very nice! No awkwardness of who should start the serving and passing. Now for the main event- then bone in filet. Seriously one of the best pieces of meat I have ever had in my life. I'll be dreaming of that steak forever. I pity the steakhouse in my future because the bar has just been raised. By far and away one of the greatest steak houses there is in the United States. Period. End of story. Accept it and go there. Five O'Clock was recommended to my wife and I by a family friend when we mentioned we were spending a weekend in Milwaukee. This review is a few years late, but must be posted regardless. Upon entering it was instantly one of my favorites. Sit and relax at the bar, order a few drinks, and btw-order your food. You are seated as the appetizers (amazing thick cut bacon) start arriving at your table! Amazing to start but then the steaks. I'm from Chicago and these steaks will rival any steakhouse here. Seriously! Cooked to perfect medium rare for both my wife and I. The service by the way is some of the best we've ever had. By the time dessert came this was already one of our all time favorite restaurants in all our world travels. In the days before Uber it wasn't always easy to get a cab where the restaurant is, and that goes for any city pre-Uber. As we waited and waited the owner noticed and began talking to us. Cab service was way off that night, no fault of the restaurant. But the owner continued the conversation with my wife and I, poured us some extra drinks on the house as we waited for a cab, and even called multiple cab companies on our behalf! It turns out he was familiar with my family's record store just outside Chicago. We talked about good old times, had some good drinks, all after the restaurant had closed. He would not leave until our transportation was taken care of. Finally our cab came. I'll never forget the friendship, service and great food from that night. The most perfectly cooked filet I ever had. Black on the outside and perfect red throughout inside. Wonderful mashed potatoes. Great homemade salad dressings and salad. I represent many restaurants as their attorney. I can truly say none have steaks anything like these!. And to top it off- live music! I hemmed and I hawed about reviewing this place because I don't like to leave negative reviews unless they really upset me. And this place didn't. Its just a little disappointing. . It wasn't bad it's just very different. They call it a supper club or something. I'm not from around here so I didn't know what that was and I didn't like the idea of it. You sit at the bar and order your food from there and then get sat down. That's closed minded of me to not like that. But I definitely without a doubt would have rather just been sat down at my table. I've never done that before. Then I was told when ordering they do their steaks differently and char the outside of the steak. I thought awesome I love a little crispness. This thing came out and looked like it didn't survive a nuclear blast. It looked like it was the last thing remaining from a house fire. All I tasted was burnt char. The steak to me had no flavor all I could taste was burnt flavor. It came out how I ordered at medium rare it's just the burning was too much. For how much you pay for a steak here there's far better steak options. I don't know about any in Milwaukee but just in general. It just wasn't my style. If it's your style or you want something different you'll love it. It's just not for me Pros: amazing waitstaff. Bartender and waitress were so nice. Amazing lobster Mac and cheese. They had good drink options. Ambiance was great a cool little vibe and place. French onion soup was great. Very corona virus mindful. Blockades in between tables waitstaff wears masks Cons: bread could be way better. Very average I thought. Could be a little more custom with the bread and butter option. The steak. You know how you can go for long periods of time without experiencing "the best (fill in the blank) I have ever had"? Then the gap in time starts to extend so much that you actually forget? Well that has happened to me with steaks over the past several years. I have had plenty of good steaks in recent memory, but if you asked me when and where I had the best steak in my life, I wouldn't know how to answer. That is until last Thursday night's dinner at the Five O'clock Steakhouse. I was in town for a wedding and we brought a group of about 20 to the Five O'clock Steakhouse. What a perfect place for a group this size of good friends. The atmosphere is casual, the service was extremely friendly, and then there is the FOOD... The salad is simple yet fresh with your choice of 6 different dressings that they bring to the table for you. The complimentary bread is warm and crusty. The list of sides is also the list of appetizers, you can order prior to your main course or during, your choice. We were a large group and ordered family style and I managed to try a little of each. Onion rings were good, shrimp cocktail was good with really large shrimp, the crab stuffed mushroom caps were actually just ok and I wouldn't order them again. However, remember something...you came here for the steak, and you are going to be served a massive one. So be warned, DO NOT fill up on the salad, bread, or appetizers, because you are moments away from a beef celebration you won't soon forget. If you are like me, you probably have your "go to" cut of steak. My cut of choice is usually a Rib-eye, my wife's is Filet Mignon. However, I decided to break from the norm and order the Porterhouse, medium rare. I think it was the phrase "Finest Cut" used in the description and the placement of the Porterhouse at the top of the menu that swayed me. I am so thankful I made that choice and I recommend all of you steak fans to give the Porterhouse a try even if you are leaning to your old favorite cut. The steak came out almost engulfing the entire plate. It had to be 20-24oz at least. It was sitting in a pleasure bath of butter and it's own juices. Small mushrooms were situated around the steak, almost strategically placed to put in better perspective the sheer massiveness of the Porterhouse. I have attached a photo that every steak lover will appreciate. The steak was cooked to perfection. Every bite was already tender, but then when you dip it in it's own juice right before taking a bite it was perfection. I am not just saying that, for me it was perfection. I didn't know it was possible for a steak of this size to be so tender on every single bite. There was not one single tough little piece of tissue or fat through out the whole steak. It may have been an overload of fat in my blood stream slowing blood to the brain, but I was on a beef high about 15 minutes into the meal...and it was awesome. I managed to put the whole steak away, which is rare for those who know this "eyes bigger than stomach" guy. I want to visit Milwaukee again. I want to bring my closest friends and family here and I want them to experience what I experienced. I don't know whether to thank Five O'clock Steakhouse for the best steak I have ever had or to be upset at them for setting the bar so high. Actually I do know...THANK YOU. read more

It was probably my own fault... There were six of us. We gathered at the bar and were told that we should each get our drink and the waitress would stop by to explain the menu. We were seated shortly after that. The table was set with a non-descript green salad and a relish tray with enough items for a couple. The waitress came by to check on drinks and ask which dressings she should bring. She came back and took our orders. Here's where I made my mistake: I didn't order steak. I'm not much of a steak eater but baby back ribs were on the menu, so I ordered those. Two people ordered steak, one ordered pork chops, and two ordered lamb chops. Three of the group were OK with their choices--steak and pork chops. The lamb chops were tough and over sauced. Very little was eaten. The ribs were very spicy; I took them home to rinse the sauce. Five O'clock Steakhouse is that Milwaukee supper club style restaurant. It's so unassuming in its location on 24th & State. When you walk inside, it's like a whole new world: mature and Rat Pack style. We were the youngest "kids" in there and I loved it! Since we had a party of 8 we did order at the table. Sometimes you will order at the bar - which is odd, but their reasoning isn't - it is so the kitchen can get a head start and have time to let your steak "rest" before serving it to you. Now, that's impressive and thoughtful to the meat! There are fun drinks on the menu, some old classics like Old Fashioned, Sazerac, Tom Collins. They also have ice cream drinks which I would have loved to have the room for but didn't. After Peter C spewed his steak knowledge on me, I was convinced that I had to get the bone-in filet mignon because where in the world else am I going to get this as an option?! Done. And it was a great, great choice. That filet was so tender and wonderful and all things good in this world!! Medium-Rare was perfect. The au jus... the au jus... I just want to drink it straight. Is that gross? It was yummy and even though I initially abstained from bread, I did later take a small slice just so I could soak it in the au jus and eat it. It was great that we not only received a relish try, but also salad! And it wasn't a chintzy! It had cucumber, tomato, a couple black olives and even cauliflower! The dressing options were plentiful! I very much liked the blue cheese and it was doused all over my salad. Also: FREE VALET! Additionally, there are several seafood options. The wine was fine, but I was hoping for better. I really hate leaving negative reviews, and I'll preface by saying, by NO means should you avoid Charlie's - Try it! Experience it at least once in your life - but as someone who was REALLY hyped on going back (haven't been in years) - I was let down a bit. So I feel compelled to give Yelp an accurate review - to the best of my ability. The Wisconsin Supper Club experience is one of my favorite - however. I can't help but feel like this place has become 50% hype, and 50% resting on it's laurels. My filet was overdone, a bit tough, and stringy/grainy, which, in my experience in the kitchen working with beef, this can certainly be attributed to beef quality - damn. I know the pool of "au jus" is kind of a signature of the house, but I found it to be a bit too greasy and salty. It didn't compliment the steak.. I couldn't help but feel that it's only function was to make the steak "not as bad" It wasn't horrible, I actually took some home and ate it as a second meal. It was simply not "as good" as I remember, was hoping it would be, and for what it cost us. The service was a bit slow and inattentive - and the place wasn't that clean. The grimy fog on the mirrors that adorn the place was so thick that you could actually see strings of dirt that has stuck to them dancing in the air like cobwebs. It pains me to only give such a staple in Milwaukee a 2 star review, and I know there are a lot of people who will disagree with me. The 2 other members of my party both agreed that a better choice for a similar steak/experience is "Milwaukee Steakhouse" which also gets rave yelp reviews, but has no history and hype to hang their hat on. As another Yelper already recommended, another great choice (but a bit more upscale) is Carnivore.
