This restaurant also has a storefront with lots of Asian treats. I loved the food here; everything was very tasty. I was a big fan of the appetizers like the edamame, potstickers, spring rolls, and the satay chicken. My only complaint was that the crab rangoon filling was overly creamy and lacked flavor. The curry was just the perfect amount of spicy. For dessert, the mango sticky rice was the perfect way to cap off a delicious meal. The waitress and owner were very sweet and welcoming. You can tell all of the food is made with lots of love.

The food was so good. It was everything we were hoping for when we decided to come here today. This review has a vegan bent. Most of their entrees can be adapted to being vegan, besides some of the salads, per our server, who I suspect is an owner...? And this is something we really appreciate. A lot of things are labeled vegan on the menu but you can assume this applies to most items, "just let us know." Further, everyone seemed happy. The employees were all friendly. Everyone there seemed to be having a good time. This restaurant also appears to be welcoming to families. It was just me and my girlfriend, but two other tables had small children. Relatedly, they have a small store that has candy and such. This is going to sound weird but it's true. The water was so cold and refreshing. Beyond the water, the food was served quickly following our orders, less than 10 minutes for sure. Also, everything tasted like it was literally just taken off of a stove. We bought the Pineapple Cashew Fried Rice with fried tofu, the Massamon Curry with fried tofu, and the Guay Chai. We love fried tofu and being able to add that to both main dishes was like xmas. The Guay Chai seemed fresh, hot and soft, and the dipping sauce (not sure what it was) was sweet and had a thick consistency. The portions were substantial, the pricing was more than reasonable, and the food was amazing. We brought home enough food for dinner tonight, we went early evening, and maybe breakfast tomorrow? Note: The picture was taken after we had eaten for a bit and does not include the additional rice or the Guay Chai.

Ordering the food over the phone wasn't terrible...but I wish the quality and taste of the food were better. I had a taste for Thai food - specifically pad Thai which is one of my favorite dishes. I ordered that along with the Thai basil fried rice (was to be a bit spicy) and was severely disappointed. Both dishes tasted similar. If I was blindfolded I probably wouldn't be able to pick which was which. I didn't dine in - this was carry-out. The restaurant itself looks small.

Sometimes it can be a big ask for restaurants to live up to their names, but Five Star Thai has no issue with that. Whenever I come to visit my parents, we like to order from here to go, but recently I finally had the privilege to dine in. I'm a sucker for a good Panang curry, and here is no different. You get plenty of food and can usually make two meals out of it. Overall, the food is fantastic and the service is great as well. To be honest, this is probably the best Thai place in all of The Region.

So... this place has done some updating. Food and service was kind of amazing. So much better than when I had written my first review. Ordered the spring rolls and the beef noodle soup and both were cooked perfectly and super yummy. The soup is a HUGE portion. And yum. I'm really glad I went back. Of course, it always helps when you're with great company. :)

This is a small place hidden from US 30. I walked in on a Monday around 7:30 and had a hearty conversation with the owner. I asked for yellow curry chicken, but he said yellow is not typically eaten in Thailand; the red is more common and has better flavor. He recommended I try any of the red curry dishes. I ended up ordering Bankok chicken, with peanuts, baby corn, water crests, bamboo and it was quite tasty. I got two filling meals out if it Dining area is open again, but I took my food to go since I'm currently traveling with two dogs service was fast and friendly.

This is my absolute favorite Thai food place! Everything tastes fresh and the prices are great. We went not knowing they were about to close in about 15 minutes and they were very gracious to serve our group of six! I'd recommend this place to anyone who likes quality Asian cuisine. read more

Just tried this place for the first time. I've never tried Thai food so i wanted to try it. OMG! This was the best fried rice I've ever had! I had the Pineapple cashew fried rice with Shrimp. They give you big pieces of shrimp not those little sample size stuff. This will be a regular place for me. Great friendly service too. Look like great people over there. They are my new friends! cant wait to try their soup.This is a great place! read more

After standing in line for 5 hours at the Three Floyds XV Anniversary Party, my husband and I just wanted to find a simple, local Thai restaurant to enjoy our newly acquired beer. We chanced upon 5 Star Thai Cuisine via Urban Spoon. Boy, were we lucky! For starters, we loved the Crab Rangoons and Chicken Satay. Then, dinner was just delicious. The Basil Fried Rice with Chicken and the Panang Curry with Chicken were perfect, tasty and satisfying. Seriously, not a single morsel was left. We didn't want to end our fabulous dining experience, so our courteous server recommended the sticky rice and green tea ice cream for dessert. Again, a great local Thai restaurant. Amazing food, great service and a friendly atmosphere. Great for a first date or a family night out. Too bad we live in Chicago and can't frequent too often. But, we will be back! read more

Haven't had one bad thing here. My favorite is the Tom Yum soup. Thai chicken wings are off the chain . Pot stickers are killer. Love the shrimp casserole, Pad Thai, pepper beef, and fried rice. Everything is fresh and flavorful. Great servers, friendly staff. read more

Located in a rather ugly strip mall off Route 30 in the Pine Island area of Crown Point, this little store front restaurant offers respectable Thai food. The space is quite limited with a dozen or so small tables. The decor is minimal and nothing special. I ordered the chicken pad Thai lunch special, which began with a small bowl of hot, mild chicken broth with fresh broccoli, green onions, cabbage and carrot. While the vegetables were fresh and crisp, the broth was bland. The pad Thai, however, was a good take on a classic Thai offering. The rice noodles were not overcooked and the sweet-sour tamarind sauce was well balanced. The plate included generous portions of all the component parts - noodles, sauteed tofu, egg, chicken, bean sprouts. I ordered it spicy and I was able to augment the heat with the jar of chili sauce provided as a condiment on the table. The Thai iced tea was a delicious accompaniment to the meal. Other menu items look promising, including the various curry dishes. A return trip for lunch may be in order. While the nearby Asparagus offers a more elegant Thai dining experience, Five Star's considerably lower prices make it a more likely choice for a casual lunch. read more

I was so excited to try this place because I love the Thai flavors but this was a major disappointment. Ordered the fried pot stickers and the chicken fried rice. Pot stickers were delicious hence the 3 stars but the rice was very bland! I will give them a second try very soon and update my review. read more

This is a wonderful restaurant. I recommend it , I eat here monthly.I think if you want fake Thai food, go down the street. I heard the rudest lady ever giving a waitress the hardest time over peanuts. She ordered a peanut dish...without peanuts!!! Lady, she can't read your mind, nor is she a psychic. You made me sick!! Please don't expect good carma if all you can give is bitterness! !! Try the pot stickers. .delicious! ! read more

Good spicing on the food. The fire dish was good, but not as hot as I expected. Also tried the red curry, which was excellent, and the satay which featured a delicious peanut sauce. Service was fine, and the food was to our table in less than 15 minutes after ordering. read more

Had pad thai for the first time 2 months ago.... And then i have had it 6 more times since then! This little hole in the wall has some magic in it! Their potstickers, egg rolls, and pad thai goes for abiut 15 dollars.. Easily serves 2. Absolutely delicious! It has truly ruined any other asian cousine out there for me. Take out is a bit slow but order it 15 minutes earlier than you normally would and it is fine. read more

This is the best Thai food I have had in NWI so far! Not only is the food fairly priced, the staff are absolutely wonderful! I have dietary restrictions and they were respectful and very willing to work around them without hesitation. My food was delicious and delivered in a timely manner. The quality and quantity of food is WELL worth the money. Definitely my go-to lunch/dinner spot. While the atmosphere is not very formal, it is comfortably informal and their grocery section is limited but offers a lot. read more

Best Thai food in Northwest Indiana. Get a bottle of plum wine next door to go with it since it is BYOB. The Drunken Noodles are my personal favorite. Be prepared to wait a few minutes for your food as it is prepared fresh. NOT a fast food joint... We have been going here for about ten years and never have been disappointed. We like to bicycle there via the Erie Lackawanna bike trail. Turn west on the trail just south of US 30 and pedal north through Pine Island. Call first as they are closed between lunch and dinner on some days. read more

I'm new to the area & wanted something tasty so I stopped in to get some Chicken Pad Thai. I got it home and was so hungry I just began to eat, felt something spongy in my mouth (began itching) but I just figured I was hungry and it must be my imagination. As I continued to eat this spongy substance became an issue for me, now I'm thinking the absolute worst if what I was ingesting!! I called the restaurant and asked what is put into the dish only to be told very chipperly "Oh that's Tou Fu, it's added to the chicken pad Thai sometimes". Uhhh........ that's NOT what the menu says and it's NOT what I ordered. I received an apology and proceeded to go into the bathroom to get the very stuff I'm allergic to the porcelain gods & the remainder to the garbage disposal (literally)!!! Thanks to this withheld information, I was forced to drug myself up with Benadryl for a couple of days that ruined my weekend & guaranteed that I'd never return again. Great reviews on this place but you might want to ask them what are ALL of the ingredients they use and they aren't disclosing. Thanks but no thanks. read more

Been here twice. Both experiences were great. We're new to town and wanted to try something local instead of a chain. Five star did not disappoint. I love their Thai iced tea and all the appetizers are great. I haven't had a bad experience there yet and hope I never do. read more

I used to love the food here. But the management has changed and the portions have been reduced now although the prices have not. Huge chunks of bok choy in all the dishes we ordered, instead of the regular chicken or shrimp quantity. The drunken noodles tasted great but very few noodles, replaced largely by the veggies. read more

I think one and a half stars probably more accurate. My spouse and I have been here 3 times over the course of a year hoping somehow things would get better. Rude service from our server on the latest visit was breaking point. The food is just bland. Menu states curry is in a traditional coconut milk stew. I am hard presses to believe this. Tastes like chicken stock and not much else. I love Thai food and I really wanted to give this place a pass simply because options in this area are rather limited. After three visits with consistent bad food I know this is not by chance. Id recommend passing on this establishment. Try Asparagus in Merrillville or its sister restaurant Siam Marina in Calumet City. They are a little more expensive but the food quality has been consistently superior to what you'll find here. read more

For a little hole in the wall restaurant, I was really impressed with the food. It was my first visit and my first time trying Thai food. The service could have been a little better. The server didn't explain the menu to us at all and even when it came out she didn't give us any sort of clue what was on our plate. We will definitely be back though! read more

I live right behind 5 Star Thai and use to order from there all the time. To me the last 2 years have been hit or miss with there food. I just got feed up paying for those times that it was crappy. Plus there is a girl who works in there that is rude. I stopped dining in, then started with pick-up and even on the phone she is rude. If you are a true Thai fan try the one in Flossmoor Illinois Saim Thai. I make the drive 3 times a month to pick-up food. It is so worth the drive and there prices are low and there portions are bigger. Great dining area also and the people are wonderful. I would not waste another dime at 5 Star. read more

While this is not a BYOB joint...it does not matter. Cozy and quiet atmosphere...good service and great food make this a hidden gem. Items ordered were hot jasmine tea, Thai iced tea, egg rolls, pot stickers, Drunken noodles and Chicken pad Thai. All were top drawer...looking forward to trying new dishes again soon! read more

The worse Thai experience ever. My husband's dish didn't come to the table until all of us were almost done with our food, no real explanation, just that they were really busy in the back, but the restaurant was almost empty. I got the Jungle curry with was supposed to have mushrooms, eggplant, bamboo and tofu... No mushrooms were found, only 1 little piece of eggplant and a whole bunch of bamboo. The curry was more like a nasty oily mess. My husband got the massaman curry and the potatoes were undercooked, he wanted his curry spicy and they couldn't even do that. The food was blend. The portions were very small for what they charge. The service wasn't that great ether. The bathroom was out of service so our friend had to drive his 2 kids to a different place in the middle of their meal. They do not have a kids menu, nor have small size meals in case you have a smaller child or want to avoid paying $10 for a kids meal. Try to avoid this place if you want to have a good dinning experience. read more

I have been coming here since I was 4 years old. I'm now 24 and before the new management this place was truly 5 star but now this place isn't even worth 1 star. Save your money and go somewhere else. Old seafood so they salt it like crazy. Also shells in the food luckily my mother didn't cut her mouth on it. The tomato in one of the dish was the core of the tomato also we watched everyone else get their food before us yet we were here first. I really wish I could go back into time before the new management happened. This place now is an embarrassment. Don't bother going here. They are rude and the manager said loudly to the cook "I don't know it's how our fault it's so salty" and even after the second time it came back it was still salty. Not even worth 1 star. read more

This is one of my favorite places to eat. I have been eating here for several years and the food is always fantastic. Order the potstickers and the panang curry and you can't go wrong. This is the only place that I would recommend ordering the tofo from in NW Indiana. I would give it 5 stars if they had more fish and seafood options. read more

I LOVE this place. The owners are awesome and provide great service. The food is great, I am a chicken pad thai person and I have yet to have a better dish at any thai restaurant in Chicago. The prices are good and its a great place for something different around the region. Must try this place out. read more

Been coming here on and off over the years, more often now that my whole family love Thai... The service is always great and for me the Firer Dish is to die for and the Tom Sap soup is a must... Alot people don't like that it is small and not alot of ambiance, but the service great food and the fact toucan talk to the person next to you without yelling makes it feel like your at home just with someone waiting on you... I come here for dinner or lunch.Just a great place to eat and s nice change from your day to day meals. read more

I absolutely LOVE this place! It is a tiny little place and I love the decor! I was in Thailand last year and I just love to go here and look at the things they have! My favorites are the spicy lime chicken, satay, cucumber salad, and of course the mango and sticky rice with some coconut ice cream! It's one of my favorite places to go! :-) read more

The pastries were kinda disappointing, not worth the $13 price for each. The tres leches just tasted like wet chocolate cake, also not worth it. My boyfriend isn't picky at all and didn't like them at all, though he still ate them so our money wasn't wasted. The Dubai chocolate bear was the only thing worth eating and had a good crunch to the pistachio, but the price was still absurd. The second time I went, I was hoping for a better experience, but was disappointed again. This interaction was much more awkward, as the girl behind the counter stood at the register the whole interaction and didn't say much of anything to me. I got the Dubai bear again, a slice of nutella kunafa, and a Dubai brownie. The bear and kunafa were pretty good if you're a texture eater, like me. The brownie on the other hand, was stale and lacked cohesion. It was just some pistachio mix sandwiched between two dry brownies and tasted nothing like Dubai chocolate. Overall, it's a cute place with aesthetically pleasing treats, but they aren't worth the price.

Too bad..this place has gone Way Down Hill! It actually pains me to write this, as I hate to write bad about anyone's business, but this needs to change, or they're going to keep losing business on their own merit. I've been to Five Star many times and it never disappoints. The atmosphere is very pleasant... small, quaint and full of character. The food is delicious and unlike no other. Matter of fact whenever I travel I make it a point to go to other Thai restaurants to compare and no one has ever topped the food at Five Star. I don't quite understand the negative reviews. Perhaps others have become so acclimated to mediocre Thai that they simply aren't used to truly authentic Thai. And for those who know nothing of Thai food, the staff is very knowledgeable and can make excellent suggestions for first timers. Don't pass this little gem up. 5-10 years ago this place would get a 5 * rating. Unfortunately the last couple years with the new owners has changed. The menu, food quality and recipes have changed. What used to be a weekly staple for me has diminished to once or twice a month. My normal dishes have become less authentic tasting, greasier, and lower quality. Sometimes ingredients will be missing all together, without even being notified. I hate to do it but it's still worth your time to try out. Make the decision for yourself. Just had the Panang chicken curry, without adding any heat. It's perfect out of the kitchen. I also love the new store they attached to the office. Though I haven't bought anything yet, I know I will soon. They changed the owner of the place, and some of the recipes have changed, I noticed. I think it tastes better, but my spouse thinks it's just different a bit, not bad different, good different.
