We stopped into Flame after hearing about it in Dallas of all places -- and although it was full with reservations on a Friday night the downstairs red room was open seating. We went down a spiral staircase into a lounge and were immediately seated. Roxanne was our server and immediately asked us what we would like to drink. Two ice cold Martinis were quickly served up and we enjoyed the cocktail hour. My husband and father in law ordered a Caesar salad and filet and I ordered the tomato salad and jumbo shrimp cocktail. The Caesar salad was huge! And the dressing was heavy w anchovy. My tomato and mozzarella salad was out of this world. We received new silver and our entrees arrived ~delicious!!! Steaks were cooked perfectly and the shrimp were large and perfectly chilled. An excellent meal!!!! Roxanne quickly boxed up my father in laws extras and we were on our way home. We love eating at the Flame. Last night I had the 16 oz toploin and my husband had the 14 oz ribeye. Both cuts are great. In fact, the toploin is my go-to steak of choice because it is always good and is their cheaper cut (at 29ish dollars, I think it is just as good as some of their more expensive cuts). You get a side with your meat, so your choice of potato. I love their fries as a side and they bring out a smoked ketchup with it that is tasty. We've been several times and have had almost all of the potato options. My husband likes the twice baked potato and the baked potato. For the baked potato they bring by a cart for you to fancy up your spud. We have always liked getting either the asparagus or creamed spinach and splitting it with our steaks and potatoes. Last night we just went with steaks and potatoes because everybody is entitled to skip the greens every once and awhile. I've had their Manhattan (super good!) before and we enjoy their house wines. This was a date night for us post COVID, and we were in the mood for a good steak. We had a reservation in the lower level the red room where they age the steaks. First impression for me was that the decor was dated, and I'm always put off by young waitress's in skimpy black dresses. These are high school or barely older young ladies. I'm not a prude, I'm just not comfortable right off the bat. Cocktails were tasty. A lot of classics on the menu. We ordered an app, the fried oysters. They were pretty tasty and there was plenty which is a nice surprise when you visit a place more upscale. Everything came out at a good pace. We didn't feel rushed and had time to linger a bit before the next plate arrived. I ordered for the entree salmon, and hubby ordered the ribeye. I'm sad to tell you his steak was just ok. It was cooked well, and he says had good flavor, but it was tough tough tough. I even tried a bite and completely agreed. We finished with desserts that were just ok as well. Came to Springfield to visit a family member and decided to go to Flame Steakhouse for dinner since their sister location (Char steakhouse & Oyster Bar) was closed. We arrived and we were told we would be seated in the "red room" downstairs; I replied there was someone in the group unable to do stairs at the time; so we were seated at a non linen table upstairs. I don't understand why they have tables covered with white linen and others are not. It should be all or none if you ask me. As we sat our waiter (James) took our beverage order and cleared the additional dish wear on the table. We ordered oysters and I was surprised to see a caddy with hot sauce and cracker's brought to the table; without requesting them. The oysters were fresh and delicious. We ordered the Delmonico (which was good but not a 5 star) with Caesar salad and twice baked potatoes. In addition to this we had popovers and bite size muffins on a wooden platter. We topped off the dinner with coffee and crème brûlée; which if our first cup of coffee was fresh and hot the evening may have been a 41/2 star. What made this 4 (generously) was a dirty dish which was not ours; was placed on our table for a short while...that to me is a definite no . Regardless of the situation. So I'm not sure if I will go back but I may go to the Char steakhouse. read more

Server was not attentive, poor memory of everyone's order, spilled multiple drinks my guests ordered, alcohol beverages weren't prepared properly, and our food was not delivered at the same for everyone at table. I set a reservation for this place 24 hours in advance. Almost every time slot was available when booked. When I arrived to the restaurant for my reservation they told me every table was booked for the main floor and I would have to eat in the "Red Room Lounge". This is not part of their main restaurant. It is downstairs and in what is as close to an early 2000's hip strip club (minus the poles) as one would ever want to comfortably get. This area was dirty, outdated, poorly maintained, and the service was provided by an overly worked cocktail waitress. I did not ask to eat at the Red Room Lounge, I set reservations at Flame. Regardless if they are all in the same building, you will experience two different worlds between the two. I set up a reservation to assure I would eat at Flame with my pregnant sister, and not in a dilapidated strip club like bar. My party was sat at a lounge table that came below my knees (I am 5'4), this includes my sister who is 8 months pregnant and was very uncomfortable. I asked again to be moved upstairs to the place I booked for and was told no. I can't tell you if the food was good or not because I couldn't focus on it due to the atmosphere I was subjected to. An example: quite literally a chair of another patron broke underneath them while they were having cocktails. It. Broke. Under. Them. Again, not the same quality of CHAIR even as the main floor. This place is a sad excuse for a "nice" restaurant in Springfield. Genuinely when I visit town again I hope there is another "fine" dining restaurant that has popped up, just so it can show SGF what good service, atmosphere, and food is really like. Wow what an experience. Valet parking for $3.00! Walked in and immediately headed to the basement. Low lighting, great music, beautiful bar, and great service! I started off with the Mushroom, Sage, Beef soup and I will have to say this is the best soup I have ever had. Then I was given their bread, its was unbelievable. Hard on the outside, soft in the middle with unsalted butter and a side of Himilayan salt. Next up was the 8 ounce Filet with the broccoli and lemon, the steak could be cut with a butter knife. I went and had the most amazing birthday dinner!!! The atmosphere was very high end which you especially notice when you see the price tag of most of the entrees. I ended up finally deciding on the lobster tail which was the best decision ever!!! It was the best lobster that I had ever had. My friends ordered steaks (I don't know which kinds) but they were very delicious. My only issues with Flame would be the attitude of our server. For a very pricy restaurant I expected a very polished and proper server but instead we had a laid back almost too relaxed server. Not saying that it was bad but it just did not fit with the idea of this restaurant. My second issue is with the sauces for the steak. The steak on its own was very delicious but if you were looking for a sauce they only offer 3 and of the 3 only 1 even tasted good. The other 2 were way too disgusting and ruined the amazing flavor of the steak. I have read a lot of mixed reviews for Flame, which honestly surprises me. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Springfield, and it is definitely on par with great steakhouses around the country. Food: Flame dry ages their beef for 21 days, a process that not only tenderizes the meat, but locks in an incredible amount of flavor. They don't waste the steak by cooking it on a grill. Instead, they broil it at 1500 degrees, and take the time to allow the meat to rest, which is an essential step to having tender steak. My steak recommendation: 8oz fillet, medium-rare, Pittsburgh style. Have this served with whatever side you want (I really like all their sides, but I particularly enjoy the twice baked potato and the fresh cut smoked fries.) Drink: They have a really great wine list and a full bar, too, if you're interested in drinks. If that is all you want, you can sit at the bar, and they have a traditional happy hour. Ambiance and wait staff: The whole restaurant is dimly lit--perfect for dates or business meetings--and every server I have experienced has been excellent. Finding restaurants with incredible servers can be a tricky thing. If the server is too pushy or ever-present, it ruins the experience. If she/he is never around when you need them, obviously the experience is ruined, too. Flame has great, well educated, and elegantly subtle servers. Flame is just that on fire. I have been going there for about a year now and business just keeps picking up. First you have the upstairs, a 4 star restaurant and steakhouse. But not like the normal steakhouse's in SW MO I mean upscale. All of there beef is aged on the premises and is exquisite. They cook there steaks at 1500 degrees, so I should probably use the word sear. The flavor is fabulous and wait staff is great. They have a smoked salmon appetizer that you have to try. For two people wine, appetizer, entree, and dessert will run anywhere from $125-$225 for a full meal, it is worth every penny. Now if you want to relax a little more walk downstairs into the Red-Room for early and late happy hour. Food specials of hamburger and fries or calamari for $3 or quesadilla for $6. 1/2 priced drinks and comfortable seating makes it a great place to go out with friends or to unwind after a long day. At times it does get very busy and the wait staff is rushed, but it's all worth it for the decor and ambiance. read more

My wife selected Flame for our four year anniversary dinner. We were looking for somewhere new to go that would cater to her food allergies (gluten and lactose), and I'd been lamenting the lack of good steak in my life for some time. The long and short of it is that the food was excellent, though I prefer my steak less crisp on the outside. They made it perfectly, and it was very good, I just cook mine differently. They were out of the ribeye, so they brought me a lobster tail with my KC Strip (I'm not a fan of strip steaks, but I wasn't willing to go from a 14 oz. steak up to the 24 oz. porterhouse), and the service was overall fantastic. Our waiter, Jace, was really amazing, and he did a great job checking with the chef and making sure everything was just right. My wife enjoyed the filet, and the waiter recommended a pretty good bottle of wine to accompany the meal. The shrimp cocktail as an appetizer was good as well. However, I give Flame four stars due largely to the price. It was fancy, and excellent, but I'm pretty sure we could have driven to Chicago and had a nice meal for the same price of eating at Flame in Springfield. And compared to going to Harter House and buying a bottle of wine and a couple of steaks... But the service was great, and for a special evening, I would definitely recommend Flame. Regarding the waitstaff and service, combined with the food, I'd say it's the best nice restaurant I've been to in Springfield. Be sure to ask for Jace as your waiter! read more

Great steak house. Prices are high but the quality was there. Took my girl here for her birthday. Made email reservations weeks in advance and got confirmation. Get to the flame about 10 minutes before my reservation and low and behold they don't even have my name. They got us a cramped table against the upstairs railing when I see nice table after nice table giggling at my misfortune. Not nice Flame, not nice. Now to the food. I had the Fillet Medallions with candied bacon. Yup the steak was cook to perfection and the flavors were sweet, salty, and delicious. I had the jalapeno potatoes on the side and an ala carte order of lobster mac. Jalapeno potatoes were ok but the lobster Mac was very good. The lady had 14oz Ribeye and loved every bit of it. We also had the calamari fries and they were ok but forgetable. Deep fried and heavy. I should have got something lighter as a starter as the whole meal was an exercise is heavy foods. Great flavor but heavy. She also had a wedge salad and though it was ok, but the star for her by far was the steak. Next time we think the seafood is going have to be an addition. Here is an updated review of the Red Room downstairs: Warning: Do not calorie count in the Red Room. It has come to my attention that Yelp reviews of the Red Room can be outdated as this establishment changed the happy hour menu. The menu is still a 3/4/5 premises before 6pm Monday-Saturday. However, the awesome calamari is no longer on the menu. BOO! My husband, my parents and I came down to the Red Room this past Friday night for dinner. We didn't order any alcohol and guess what-- our waitress was just fine with that. I truly appreciate bars that accommodate those who choose not to drink at that time and give those patrons the same service as the rest of their customers. We all ordered a burger and a side, plus an extra order of fried pickles for dinner. Personally, I ordered the Juicy Lucy. I rarely ever eat red meat, but man, was that burger delicious! Of course, I topped it with the smoky ketchup, dijon mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and jalapenos. The burger itself was rich and like the name, juicy. I appreciated the size of the burger and the toasted bun. Overall, splendid for just $4. I also ordered a side of fried pickles. What? I'm a woman. Of course, I ordered the fried pickles. These babies were piping hot and served with a side of ranch for only $3. I enjoyed that the batter didn't overpower the pickle itself, just complimented it (as it should be). Try dipping these in the truffle aoili. It's da bomb! ps. I really enjoyed my husband's salt and vinegar fries. The fries didn't leave you scrounging for water or a dip to cover up the amount of delicious, artery-clogging sodium. Their steaks comes with plenty of options for sides and I would have to say that their Cheddar mashed potatoes are good as well as their Salt & Pepper fries. However -1 star for their caesar salad which was pathetic in my opinion. The "salad" consisted of 3 leaves of romaine some parmesean and a couple of croutons. Oh man. Went for Happy Hour around the holidays while we were in town. I have been dreaming of the steak tartare for months. It was meh. The carpaccio was kind of gross - gigantic pieces, impossible to cut. The tacos (HH menu) were like jerky. I had avoided Flame for the longest time because I had received several reports from friends that the fare was above average, but the masquerade of a metropolitan steak house came with prices that scaled even higher. On a whim, I decided to find out myself last Saturday evening. Before I entered, I walked past the small valet lot to the east of the building where attentive college students were parking and retrieving vehicles. If there is inclement weather or if a party member has chosen footwear not meant for longer walks, this might be a worthwhile option. I happened upon a great spot on South, so my commute was a short 2-block stroll. I checked in as a single and was informed the wait for a table in the main dining area was 40 minutes, which was not a huge surprise since it was First Friday (a fact I had not considered earlier). Reservations are apparently recommended, and they are accepted both via phone and on their website. Even the main bar was at capacity, so I was directed down a spiral staircase to the Red Room The Red Room is a downstairs lounge which features tall 2-top tables, normal 4-tops, a bar, and some communal seating areas. The lighting/decor is closer to a club than a restaurant, and I learned they have a DJ come in some nights, so while it might be good for a group, if you're on date and want quiet conversation, you might stay upstairs. It seems to serve as both an overfill/waiting room for the main dining area and a place where drink specials and lower-priced, smaller-portion dishes can be offered to serve an alternative clientele than the primary dining experience. Thankfully, it also serves the full "upstairs" menu as well. After grabbing the last seat on the bar, I was promptly welcomed by the bartender and given a requested food menu. It is a single large double-sided sheet (available on their website), and in keeping with the gourmet theme, has fewer options than something like a chain restaurant. I selected the 14oz ribeye steak (medium-rare, advertised 25-day wet aged and 21-day dry aged) with lyonnaise potatoes, a choice that was praised by a fellow bar patron who had just finished a nearly identical meal and was very satisfied with his decision. While I waited for my food, the bartender kept easy conversation with everyone in his charge. I asked him for his recommendation of a simple tequila drink, and after a few questions regarding my preferences, he served me a Milagro reposado on the rocks with a splash of lime, which was spot on. When the entree came, it was blessedly simple: a thick steak with olive oil and seasoning on a white plate paired with potatoes served in a small cast iron pan. It's refreshing to see a restaurant with the "gourmet" title confident enough in its ingredients and process to not add a glaze, garnish construct, or something else "exotic" to appease the foodies. The steak appeared to be broiled and was medium-rare bordering on rare, which I expect from a proper steak house. The potatoes were a good mixture of textures with crispy edges and soft flesh, and both they and the accompanying sauteed onions were heavily seasoned, which I prefer. An aside: I grew up eating fresh grain-fed beef raised by my grandfather, so I rarely get steaks at restaurants since I'm nearly always disappointed. This ribeye came relatively close to those cuts of yesteryear in terms of flavor and impressed me quite a bit with its tenderness. Simply aging a steak this long doesn't automatically mean good results, but if my meal is any indication, they know what they're doing in both their kitchen and their aging room. Whoever trimmed my piece left just enough fat on the edge to add an extra bit of flavor to each sliced piece. It was cooked fairly uniformly throughout and had just a hint of char on the edges. The seasoning was light and worked with the oil to enhance the flavor of the meat, not overpower it. With my top-shelf tequila drink, the whole meal ended up being just over $50 before tip, which I consider a decent value for the quality of the fare. I would have preferred a quiet table to a bar seat, but that was my fault for not making a reservation, and the bartender and other patrons were jovial enough to make it a fun evening. My favorite steak in Missouri is still found in Kansas City, but this is the best one I've had in Springfield by a fairly wide margin, so I'll definitely be back to try other entrees and the ambiance of the main dining area. read more
