I'd describe my experience at Civil Kitchen as mediocre. The hostess greeted me but was somewhat unfriendly, leaving me at my table without a word, where I waited for 5-10 minutes without any service, even though the restaurant was not even close to half full. My server was friendly and professional, however. I ordered the fish tacos. The fish was crunchy and delicious, but there was very little in each taco, with each piece only running about 2/3 the length of the small tortilla. The tacos, despite their many toppings, tasted rather flat, although the slaw was fresh. One more thing: The limes that came with my drink and tacos were drying out and faded. We were walking around downtown and decided to try this place. It was a nice day and we sat out on the patio. Sitting out on the patio allows for a great view of downtown. Our server, Isabel was very nice and we appreciated her service. Also, Rey was sweet as well. We ordered the chicken sandwich and the pork belly tacos. The chicken sandwich is big, I had to take out one of the strips of chicken since it made the sandwich huge. The chicken was good, the fries didn't taste fresh, almost stale-ish. This might be the best thing I've put in my face for a long time m. Lordy, it was so good, it about makes me want to cry. First off, Emery our server was spectacular. He was spot on when I couldn't decide what to order and to surprise me. I got a small pecan, apple salad with goat cheese and a balsamic vinaigrette and the Seoul Food Chicken sandwich. I have never had chicken so tender and juicy and the slaw was perfect. The salad was equally amazing. The goat cheese and candied pecans, my mouth is watering just thinking of it. My son ordered the Brussel sprouts and chicken and waffles. Both off the hook. I should have walked through the whole place. It was architecturally interesting. Delicious cocktails for $10. Most of the great menu items are well under $20. Kids menu is a little pricey at $10pee, but hard to complain too much. I had the BBQ pork belly tonight at it was CRAZY good. Super meaty, fatty pork belly so tender I didn't use the knife at all. Laying on a bed of sweet potato hash that was the perfect sweet compliment to the belly. My wife had the Blue Goat Burger. Which was substantial and delicious. Her side of choice was the sweet potato waffle fries, which came with a little sugary coating that I would've requested they hold, but that's just me. We came to Civil on our way to Branson. The ambience is excellent, super hipster. Waitress was kind and was quick. Food was mediocre. The menu looks phenomenal but the actual presentation was a disappointment. We started with the truffle fries. The flavors together were great but there was no adhesive, ie a sticky cheese to keep the toppings on the fries. We also ordered the feta dip which seemed frozen. It was not a dip it was a blob like frozen butter. I also tried the date n'apple salad. The dressing just did not pair well with the toppings. In my opinion, the dressing completely ruined the salad. Very disappointed. 3rd time here. I believe last 2 times- over 2 years ago were both a 5. Previously loved the chicken and waffles but this time fry cook very heavy handed- chicken cooked to death. We came here not knowing a single thing about it after reading reviews. I got the bahn mi tacos. The tortillas were just pulled from a bag without making any attempt to heat them up. Brought this up to the server and she blamed it on the temperature of the slaw they put on top. It did absolutely no good to bring it to their attention, because they just wanted to deflect. Coming home from Branson, went to church in Springfield and I was up for a place we haven't tried. I did some searching and found the Civil Kitchen had some good reviews. I read my wife some of the plates and she was good with it. On the drive, the part of town we were going through didn't look great. Springfield is an interesting city, it is rough around the edges, but places I've been to seem to be clean and maintained, anyways, back to the review. The restaurant is in an old building and they went along with it having a rustic atmosphere. I would say when eating here, bring a good sized appetite. We had the onion ring stack appetizer, it was 2 stacks of onion rings, they were outstanding. My wife had the fish tacos. She gave that dish her highest rating of YUMMY. I had a chicken sandwich with coleslaw. It was A+. It was 2 small breastfeeding pieces fried with cheese, honey mustard, onion and tomato. The side of coleslaw was an Asian style, also A+. Again, bring an appetite as I couldn't finish it. The price per portion ratio is very good. The staff are nice and our waiter, I wish I remembered his name, was very good at top off waters and iced tea and checking on us regularly. Short story long, if in Springfield for lunch or dinner, check it out, you will be pleased. The liquor selection is also very good. Being on the road as we were, I didn't imbibe.
