We made a birthday reservation for a busy Friday night with no problem. we had been to the restaurant numerous times over the past couple decades and always had a good experience. However, this time the service and the food quality stood out tremendously! Our host greeted us very promptly and brought us to our beautiful table that was adorned with a candelabra with at least five real candles a lit. We were immediately offered some complementary house champagne, which was nice. The menu was extensive on offering very fine foods. However, my wife pointed out for somebody who's a little bit pickier of an eater noticed there was no pasta offerings and only one chicken entrée which was not a problem and ended up being fantastic but a couple more options for picky eaters of non-steak varieties and fish varieties might not hurt. I always frequent this restaurant for the freshest oysters offered probably in the whole state of Missouri, and they never disappoint. Last night they had at least five varieties, including Blue points, petites, birthday girl, and other varieties from both the West Coast and the East Coast. I ordered two of everything and it was very fun to experiment with the differences of the oysters from both coasts, and I ended up becoming a big fan of east Coast Bluepoint oysters. However, they were all extremely fantastic and very fresh. The oyster shucker was extremely talented and preserved the liquid within the shells perfectly. I was unable to find one shelf fragment in any of my oysters, which is unbelievable. As my main course, I ordered nothing but appetizers because they all look fantastic. I ordered the steak tartare and the escargot and both were unbelievably good. The rest of my five table mates ordered their meals, ranging from fish to filet mignon, and they all raved about their food and finished their complete plates. I remember the food quality being good at this location in years past, but this time it really stood out and we now regard this as the best restaurant in Springfield, hands-down. The server Lily was extremely attentive and often had other servers assist with plate arrivals and clearing of the table very promptly. Lillie was probably one of the best servers. I've had a very long time. Don't skip out on dessert as the chocolate torte and the crème brûlée s'mores were both very fantastic offerings. I later met with the manager, Justin to complement his exceptional staff and food quality and let him know that we will be returning very very soon and more frequently in the future. Char Steakhouse by far exceeded my past expectations and is my pick for the best restaurant in Springfield. You won't be disappointed if you try it. read more

Great Friday night dinner. Service was very good. Food was very flavorful. Plenty of parking. Service was good. Standout for me was the food was all delicious. Meal starts with popovers which are a unique and they were warm and good. The shrimp cocktail was fresh and the sauce was delish. The crab cake was amazing, so much crab and flavors were great. When they serve the steak, they ask you to cut into it before they leave. Out of five, two were slightly off but we didn't report it. A medium was medium-, almost medium rare. A medium rare was medium+. However, the flavors were great and still enjoyable. The cheddar jalapeño mashed potatoes were noted as a highlight of the sides. The Brussels were good as were the mashed and the baked potatoes also looked good Plenty of desserts and the surprise birthday wishes and brownie lava like cake. The smores brûlée was unique and tasty. The key lime cheesecake was massive and it was noted as good. They also have these cool Italian mints. Great meal, I will be back. read more

This place has an upscale / contemporary atmosphere....and one of the nicer places to eat in Spfd. Overall, you'll get good service, with many of the items being quite good; but not everything: Tuna Nachos: Excellent. Meatballs: Excellent. Bacon wrapped dates: Always a great appetizer. Watch how many you get, as the very sweet balsamic reduction is a lot of sweet to have. Calamari: Very good option to choose. Wedge Salad: Pretty good, but wish they had chopped up the bacon and onion. Bacon however, was darn good...just not much on it and done as a strip. The misses tonight - I mean major misses: French Onion Soup: I'm a salt person but this was majorly majorly over salted. Tonight, the salt level was ridiculous. T Bone steak: Underwhelming. The steak was hardly seasoned and beef flavor was meh. Lastly, the server tonight was excellent. Her parents obviously taught her how to communicate and excellent eye contact and general personality. The kitchen majorly miss-timed some of the service to our table. For instance, the side potato dishes came out, at least 15 minutes after our entrees. The food was absolutely incredible! my husband and I still rave about it to this day. unfortunately I was really disappointed with the service. our server did a wonderful job with taking care of our table but I had called and made an reservation for my husband's birthday and the person on the phone specifically asked if it was a special occasion to which I said yes, and it went unacknowledged once we were there. our server had talked for a long time with the tables around us, and provided them with special desserts, but never asked or acknowledged us. it didn't ruin our night but I was disappointed for my husband as we had saved up to come here and nothing special was done for him. we both work in the service industry so we were exited to be the once given a special night, but were disappointed. the food was incredible so we will definitely return! read more

Conveniently located in south Springfield, our party of 4 were celebrating a wedding anniversary of 48 years and Valentine's Day and our waitress Jaden was excellent., we all felt like we were being taken care of by the owner. Our table had the 14oz KC Strip, the beef short ribs, chicken bijan and a filet with blue cheese crust along with bacon wrapped dates as an appetizer and s'mores brûlée for dessert. Everything was cooked perfectly. The star of the show that made the evening extra special was our server Jaden (sp?). She had perfect timing and allowed us to enjoy the evening celebrating our daughter's birthday. She had great recommendations and a very pleasant personality. We will absolutely return. read more

Char is a great and upscale place to dine end enjoy really good food. The setting is very nice and the night we went it wasn't super crowded which made it a nice athmosphere. All in all a great experience and definite recommendation. I took one star off the highest rating for wait times. It started when we arrived on time to our reservation and had to wait for over 15min for our table to be ready. Not a big deal as such, but for a place at this pricetag I expect the reservation to be waiting for the guests. Also, The food took very long to be served which resulted in an over 3 hours dinner. A little longer times in an upscale place are ok, this was very long, though... That being said, once the food was there it was delicious and worth it's price! Restaurant was nice and decorated nicely for the holidays. It's located in a strip so we had no problems finding a parking spot in the lot. Received complimentary champagne for a birthday. Started off with shrimp/lobster crab cakes, bacon wrapped dates, and meatballs. All were good and would order again. Caesar salad was good but had to take my anchovy off. French onion soup was so so. The cheese on top was so hard and could barely eat it. Main Entree: Filet was okay. Needed more flavor and didn't melt in mouth. Kansas City strip was good Delmonico had too much fat on it and I love fat thats why I ordered it. Really hard to find any good pieces of meat on it. I sat at the bar in the early afternoon on a weekday. The place wasn't very busy at the time just a couple customers, which was disappointing...since I had come to relax, socialize, enjoy a large meal and meet my new Missouri neighbors over cocktails, but at least the service was quick and friendly enough. The restaurant has a good sized interior not the best or coziest feeling decor, but it certainly isn't bad. It feels like a work in progress that is 3 quarters there. I tried several of their cocktails along with a ribeye steak (I forget the size) and the oysters as an appetizer all was delicious and filling. I will have to revisit another time and try more items on the menu to give it another more through review and to see if there are any exciting specialties to try. I took off a point because although the food and service was just fine overall, there were a few finesse things lacking in my opinion...it kinda lacked that cozy old acquaintance feel or a exciting ultra modern vibe. I have failed as a helper because I did not take any pictures. That being said this is my favorite restaurant in all of Springfield. This place really is a cut above everything else. The wait staff was top notch. The food was unreal. The dates were delicious, and I don't like dates the steak was cooked perfectly nice char and rare on the inside. The sides and salads were also fantastic. There is no part of this restaurant that leaves some to be desired. The overall feel is intimate and inviting. I 100% recommend coming here. What should have been a great experience was ruined by the Events Coordinator at Char. My husband had been diligent in communicating with the Events Coordinator as we were coming from out of town and could not meet in person. We made her aware that we needed several vegetarian meals and that the time we would be arriving would be about an hour range. She assured us that this was no issue and they'd be ready for us. Imagine our surprise when we arrived for our rehearsal dinner and the host wasn't even aware we were coming. They finally let us upstairs to find that none of the decor we had dropped off was setup. The last straw was when it took over an hour for us to get food - and the "vegetarian dish" that was supposed to be stuff mushrooms turned out to be mac and cheese..... The only reason they get 2 stars is because of the great bartenders who were extremely apologetic for their restaurant's shortcomings. read more

The wedge salad was good, plenty of blue cheese and the bacon on it had a great taste. We also shared a strip steak, medium, with a blue cheese crust. The blue cheese crust seemed to be cream cheese blend, honestly not very much flavor. The steak came out sliced on a cutting board, which was a lovely presentation, but was a little over cooked and honestly a little tough and dry. This is a very pretty restaurant with good service but the food was subpar. I had the salmon and it was salted to the moon. The asparagus was also over cooked. The people I was with got the calamari and it was extremely salty as well. I think only one adult didn't complain about their entree and it was the tuna. 4.5 STARS! What a beautiful place. You can tell they take pride in their food prep. We started off with the pop overs, calimari, bacon wrapped dates and meatballs. The bread is missing some dense goodness and a better flavored table butter would be nice. The calimari was fried nicely and not overcooked but could of used a little more salt in the batter. I love a sweet chili sauce with calimari but they use a mayo based paprika colored sauce. It's good. The bacon wrapped dates is where it's at!!! Order two plates of those. So super smooth in texture, sweet like candied yams and the bacon takes your palette back to the dark side of crispy salty goodness. The meatballs are huge and two of them can fill you up enough to not need dinner. Split them with a party of three or four! I ordered the lobster tail sided with lobster Mac and Brussel sprout leaves. The lobster was slightly over cooked and dry but not ruined. The presentation was good. The Mac was comforting and had plenty of lobster inside. The Brussels are OK but why not just give the whole sprout instead of making it hard to dig into a bunch of little leaves. We spent a good amount of time enjoying all our food before moving over to the bar for more drinks. They have a great whiskey list here. At first it was hard to get bar service. The young cocktail servers didn't want to greet us or bring us friendly service until we yelled at the bar tender. She looked around for waitresses and eventually came over. It was not a good look. Service continued to slow so I tipped the main bar tender $50 to get the value started. Another $50 tipped when she brought our first round and another $150 at the end. We stayed until they shut it down. I'm sure they were happy to have us after a slower Tuesday night. Just had dinner for my birthday at char, Alesha was absolutely phenomenal! She kicked butt, was attentive and was very knowledgeable. She brought fresh napkins and silverware for each course, kept our drinks filled, and checked in on us regularly. Couldn't ask for anything better. Thank you Alesha for making my birthday dinner a perfect experience! The decor in here was classy with black and white photos of classic celebrities. The ambiance is upscale with a soft touch of casual. Lighting is low, which is the norm for a steak house, giving that warm intimate atmosphere. I had the prime rib, medium rare cooked perfectly with a charred crust and a nice amount of marbling. My date had the chicken beijan and the Alfredo sauce was incredible. The chicken stuffed with goat cheese and bacon was an amazing combination. I will be back. We were given a glass of complimentary champagne to start out our evening and followed up with the tastiest glass of moscato while waiting for appetizers. The calamari must'nt be missed, not chewy, perfectly fried...delicious! A giant ground steak meatball was up next. Seriously! A glass of red and a meatball alone would have been perfection. And then came the rolls. Splendid. So light and airy. Half of our table ventured into land and sea while the other half chose the petite medallions. And this is where we meet melt-in-your mouth. The steaks are grilled to perfection and made for a very satisfied table. While I'm not expecting Smith & Wollensky in Springfield, at $250 for two, I certainly would hope for more. Made a reservation via OpenTable; they didn't have us down. Had to wait 20 mins. in the bar, offered us one round of free drinks. I don't drink, but ok. We both ordered the special, which we were excited to see was bone-in filet, something we've greatly enjoyed at higher-end steak houses. Meat was gristly and fatty. The oysters we ordered had about a dime's worth of meat in them, and weren't even fully shucked. I guess it's hard to shuck an oyster with no meat in it. End of meal, waiter asked why I'd not finished my vegetable side. I told him they weren't fully cooked; he replied "Sorry to hear that." and took my plate. Normally you'd think he'd offer to take it off the bill? I waited a few days, called, and asked for a manager. I hate to complain about restaurants, but for that price, it was just a bit much overall. The girl who answered wouldn't connect me to a manager, rather made an excuse and had me leave a message. Awful, pig swill. Forty minutes to get over cooked dried out meal of their special steak & crab-stuffed monkfish that had mediocre flavor, way too dry, and overly salty. My gosh what are they doing for these prices? Told the waitress to call the chef over. "Travis" is a twenty-something who needs more control over the orders going out. Will NEVER go again, would NEVER recommend their food and highly discourage anyone from giving this establishment your money. Only bright spot? Drinks were of good quality tho $2-4 higher than other high-end night spots. Normally me and my significant other are huge fans of Char. Unfortunately, we went about a month ago for date night and were greeted with nothing but disappointment. It was not terribly busy, yet our food took longer than usual to come out. My significant other ordered the sea bass took the first bite and it was ice cold. Myself ordering my go to with the delmonico ribeye, ordered medium rare and it came out gray, cold and flavorless. We expressed our total dissatisfaction with our waiter, although not his fault. Had an amazing meal recently at Char. We started off with appetizers and drinks. They have a great selection of wine, whiskey, and specialty cocktails. I had to try the French onion soup and it did not disappoint. It was so rich and cheesy. The soup could have been a meal all by itself. So good. My husband ordered the ceviche appetizer and it was equally delectable. For our main course, I ordered the the 16oz bone in strip. It was a special for the evening. I also had the jalapeño cheddar mashed potatoes. My steak was cooked to perfection.
