As Caribbean people, especially those who own restaurants and serve others, we've got to do better -- raise the standards, man. On Saturday, we went to Flames in Randolph and ordered a large curry goat and a medium oxtail. When I got home, I sat down to enjoy my curry goat and white rice. First bite in -- I felt something strange. I spit it out, and lo and behold, it's a big ol' rock! (See picture below.) I was stunned, like, what in the world is this big macco rock doing in my food? My appetite vanished immediately. I called Flames right away and spoke with a polite employee who apologized sincerely. She asked if I wanted my money back or a new meal. I told her to process a refund. She said she'd let her manager know and that I'd need to come in and swipe my card, but she reassured me not to worry and apologized again. I appreciated that. Fast forward to today (10/28), I went in and spoke with a manager named Nord. After explaining everything, instead of showing empathy or professionalism, she said the employee who handled it "did not do the right thing" and started lecturing me about their policy, saying the rock came from the rice, so it's not their fault. Like WHAT! I had to stop her right there. I said, "Call Jonathan, the owner, and let's just sort this out." I wasn't there to argue and I just wanted a refund or a replacement meal. After a few back and forth, she finally gave me another large goat meal. But honestly, if this was a reputable business, there would've been no need for all that. A good manager would've apologized, empathized, and made it right. Imagine if that rock had broken my tooth -- this could've been a serious situation! What's worse? The employee who handled things correctly got called and reprimanded for simply doing her job -- for caring about the customers and showing decency. That's unacceptable. And let's talk about accountability. Imagine finding a rock in your meal and being told, "It's not our fault, it's the rice." Really? So y'all don't wash the rice? The rice white, the rock black -- how no one see that? That's pure negligence. And to top it off, the food isn't even the same anymore. The curry goat I got today? No flavor, no love, like they forfot ro add the spices-- uugh. Should've just got the refund. The bottom line is this: Flames, and all Caribbean restaurants, we have to do better. Hire people who genuinely care about the customers, who understand what hospitality means. This "bad attitude, twist-up face, no compassion" culture has to stop. Mistakes happen -- that's life -- but taking ownership and valuing your customers makes all the difference. I've been featured in magazines and recommended Flames many times -- globally. But after this experience, I can't continue to support or recommend them. My few dollars might not make a dent, but one thing I know for sure: when people realize they deserve better, they will choose better. read more

I wish we had grab-and-go like this in LA, for Jamaican food. My husband and I were so impressed with the upkeep and all of the options. The prices were very reasonable and most importantly the food was plentiful and delicious. We ordered rice and peas, stew chicken akee fish, festival bread, and paddies. Caribbean food has a bit of original authenticity on the East coast. So it's safe to say I enjoyed the Caribbean food more here. Lol. I said oxtail please no gravy. You think she would take the time to strain some of the gravy (no ) she just plopped it in there. I've got Jamaicans in family so I can vouch that this spot is legit. My favorite part about Flames is that they have plates that come in three sizes--small, medium and large. The small is really a medium, the medium a large and the large a family size. The small plate only cost me $10.50 and I ordered yellow rice, mixed vegetables and curry chicken with curry sauce on my rice. Unfortunately they didn't have jerk chicken, but what I ate was solid I was left full. Everything is pre made so you're in and out even if there's a line. It doesn't look like there's much seating from the outside, but there's about 20 inside. If I lived closer, I'd probably be here once a week. read more

According the the Urban Dictionary, when someone states that you " put your foot in it ", when referring to food. It means that it was exceptionally good. Flame's in Randolph has done exactly that. Their jerk chicken was as tender as I've ever had with hints of garlic and thyme. The scotch bonnet peppers ( really high Scoville units ) were present but not overwhelmingly. It came with rice and peas ( beans ). The lovely lady behind the counter offered to put the sauce from the stewed chicken on top and I'm glad she did. The complexity of flavors really worked. The behind glass pile of fried chicken had me at hello so I had to try it for review purposes only. ( Lie ). Again, juicy as can be and heavily seasoned. Just the way I like it. I was on my way to a repast or after funeral wake when I stop in to get a bite to eat. I notice some Mac and cheese in the concession. The food display looked so good the space was clean and service from the ladies friendly. This place is definitely a hidden gem. I ordered oxtail Mac and cheese and cabbage. I've tried Flames in Randolph a couple of times and was disappointed by the service and by the food. Service: plates are served with a side of attitude. I know we all have bad days but the attitude was the same both times I've been here. Food: I've tried a couple of different plates here. The jerk chicken was my least favorite. It was cold and very salty. The jerk sauce was also not appetizing. The veggies were not fresh. The rice was ok. Prices: If the quality of the food was better, I'd say the prices were reasonable but as it is, the food is overpriced. Wish I had a more positive experience as I love to support Black owned businesses. I hope they consider the feedback. read more

It is also difficult for me to understand how their entrees are so maybe this is biased.The restaurant overall is very loud and rushed. 9/21/2023 for lunch. Food was just ok. Plantains as soon as I opened the container I could see they were old looking. I tried them anyways, they literally tasted like they had been sitting in the fridge for 5 days and reheated. They either never have them or they're never freshly cooked. The rice is also a hit or miss. It is more often waterlogged than not. The thing is, I've not tried them for a while so thought I would rather then going all the way into Boston give them another try. Very disappointed because I have tasted their and it was really good. I can't get enough of Flames and now realize that it's too dangerous to have so close to my home. I give them way too much business! Food never disappoints, oxtails are the best. Service is okay most of the time but can be a bit slow. I do give them all credit for how well they deal with some mean customers. Definitely seen some crazy interactions!! I am the epitome of a regular inflames and as of late, there's an older woman behind the counter who has just been absolutely brutal, brutal, and rude. She gives me small portions, deliberately, even after I watch her, serve the person ahead of me often times getting the same exact thing and she feels their tray up then when it comes to me, this morning woman was served ahead of me. We got the same exact thing, the woman got two heaping spoons of acne, selfish, and dumplings. I got the same exact thing instead I got my self served in a small tray, and I got one spoonful and a piece of fish at that for the same price when I asked her spoonful like the person in front of me she told me I got my portion and I wasn't getting anymore. The girl that rang my food up open my tray and said something to her to the effective that's not enough and they went back-and-forth about giving me more to the back to ask someone I'm assuming and came back in the brutal woman gave me a half a spoon peppers and onion. I should've left it there and walked out but I didn't something needs to be done because the food is wonderful and nine times out of 10. The customer service is wonderful but as of late this woman makes me never wanna come again. I can't understand why such poor customer service.. I have provided a picture $14 is what she charged me for spoonful of acting selfish and my husband was so angry. He said I shouldn't of took it. I shouldn't have paid for it. I should've left it there. It was just unsettling two weeks ago I got the peppers and steak and rice and peas. Saturday I came 3 people in front of me waited 15 mins then when I did get there they got the orders screwed up again and waited 10 more mins at the checkout. First time trying this place and we were definitely impressed. The food was flavorful and well seasoned. The restaurant itself could've been cleaner and better organized. The employee scooping the food was super slow. Food here was flavorful and well seasoned. I had yellow rice, curry shrimp, and a side of jerk chicken. Even though I ordered a small, I had enough food to last me two days. The rice was fresh and well seasoned along with the jerk chicken which was very spicy, but delicious. The curry shrimp was also flavorful and full of peppers. 10/14/2020 - This is the fifth location of Flames restaurant that has opened. There is a variety of food to choose from. Chicken, Steak, Fish, Goat etc.. and a multitude of side dishes. As of this day, I've eaten there four times. The steak is my protein of choice. Very tender. I tried a different flavored chicken plate (sides you choose) early in the week and the chicken was dry. Extremely over cooked. I didn't eat the breast or thigh. I was disappointed. Flames do not skimp on the amount of food they give you. Their plates are packed. Thus allowing 2-3 sittings depending on your appetite. The staff unfortunately is slow taking orders and making plates. You walk into a restaurant because you are hungry. HURRY UP!!! Not that I did, but I wouldn't wait until 6P to head to flames. They are busy and you will wait some time. Social distancing they adhere to, but 10 people not including the workers in such a small space isn't great. They have window guards up protecting the food. You have to practically shout your order because they can't hear you most times. All in all, Flames offer home cooked Caribbean meals in different sized plates for a reasonable price. I've had Flames at the Boston/Mattapan locations plenty of times and they were better than here. The first time I came by, it was packed with people. I stood in line outside and it took forever so I left. A few days after I came back during lunch time. There was only 2 people in front of me but it still took a very long time to get food. I got oxtail and ask if they had jerked chicken since the guy before me got some. The girl said no then said yes and make me wait another 15 mins for the jerked chicken!! She seems frustrated or rather she was new...? I'm not sure. I was there for 45 mins total waiting for food. It was ridiculous, should have left. Rice and beans was a bit dry. The jerked chicken was really spicy!!! If you like the heat then it's a yes. The oxtail wasn't flavorful and was fatty/small. I like the veggies. They give like 3 pieces of plantains. I love Flames. The best one is the Mattapan location but the Randolph is a close second. The second time I went to the Randolph location I made the mistake of going too early for lunch. They were just finishing breakfast and making the switch and somethings weren't done cooking. The jerk chicken wasn't done yet, which isn't a surprise, but the cabbage or plantain not being done makes no sense. That's literally the quickest and easiest thing to make and it wasn't ready so I had to settle for the mixed vegetables which I wasn't a fan of because they were just a bit too raw still. The stew chicken was great both times I had it. The server (a guy) was being a little stingy with the chicken and I knew so but didn't say anything because I thought they changed the portions. Good thing the cashier noticed and she added more chicken to my plate. If your plate isn't struggling to close, they didn't plate it right lol. I love the vie of Flames. If you and everyone in line knows exactly what to order and how to, the line moves quicker (ex. medium jerk, cabbage, and rice and peas with sauce on the rice; you put any other meat sauce on;say the whole order for each plate in on go) Flames adds a community/cultural eliminate to every location which is very much needed. This was the first time I went into Flames, and it will certainly be the last. There were two workers (server and a cashier) present at the time of my visit. They were rather cold. When my boyfriend approached the register to pay, the cashier flat out ignored him. It was rather awkward. At that point, the server walked off to the back, looking at her phone as a line was forming. The cashier just stood there, doing nothing. When the server came back to the counter after looking at her phone in the back, she didn't even bother greeting me. Instead, she just sat there staring at me, likely waiting for my order. It was quite cold, and not very welcoming. And this is just the service. Now the food: we had ordered jerk chicken. It was so dry and salty. The wings were clearly over cooked to the point the meat itself turned hard and dark, like leather. Parts of the chicken were inedible because it was too tough to chew through, and it was just very unpleasant. The rice was a beautiful color but tasted very bland. However, the veg was delicious. Do yourself a favor, and go down the parking lot and head on over to Top Notch if you want better service and Caribbean food. If they're closed, just drive down on over to Wendy's, or even McDonalds. read more
