Let me start with the good. The food was very good! We enjoyed the cherry pancakes, bacon, potato and eggs were yummy. Good coffee and mimosa. I would've rated it a 5 star experience had it not been for the following: I asked for a table outside. The host said I couldn't have one because there were none available (mind you I could see an open dirty table that I would've waited for). They sit me right away and 5 min later they seat someone else outside at the empty table. Then when I went to order my food I wanted an omelette but 3 egg omelettes are always too much for me so I ordered a Sunrise (you get 2 eggs ANY style) and asked for it to be a mushroom Swiss omelette. The waiter actually says because it's a special order and the kitchen is backed up it's going to take 45 minutes to make it that way. But scrambled eggs (I make eggs at home...it takes about the same amount of time to make scrambled as it is an omelette) wouldn't take that long and if I just ordered an omelette off the menu it wouldn't that long. So what is the logic in telling me it's going to take 45 minutes for something that to me isn't even a special order when an omelette is a style of cooking an egg. It was a ridiculous comment and ended up just annoying me as a customer. How is that good customer service? read more

We were staying at the great wolf lodge down the street and came here for breakfast. The portions are huge, the omelettes were really good. The pancakes were just okay. The service was good, and they had a decent kids menu. The place is really big and there is a ton of parking and seating. Definitely a place you should check out on any trip to TC! We were at Great Wolf Lodge for a few days and stopped in here on our way out of town. So glad we did! I order the ultimate hearty and the portion and price was not bad! Great place to get food before a morning days start! The atmosphere and people were so friendly and clean. This is an amazing restaurant. I have a severe dairy allergy and my server was extremely careful, attentive, and kind. I felt totally safe and heard! The food was absolutely delicious. My husband and I were heading out from Travers City and the day/night before we were in downtown. We didn't want to have to go to downtown again for breakfast and pay for parking, so we found the Flap Jack Shack while on our way out of town. I was a bit apprehensive about going based on the outside (I know, don't judge a book by its cover!). The place is retro, but not dirty. It is very clean and cute! Had oldie but goodie music on and we were seated right away for a Friday morning. Their prices are reasonable, much more reasonable then going to downtown Traverse City. Our waitress was pleasant and attentive. I got "The Sunrise" you get a bit of a taste of everything. Their spuds had good flavor and didn't just taste like a potato. Flap jacks were fluffy and my two eggs were cooked just the way I wanted them. My husband got the "Ultimate Hearty" which basically is the same just three eggs instead of two and added sausage. Good breakfast spot. We stayed in Traverse City over the Memorial Day weekend, and ate here twice. Food was what you'd expect from a breakfast spot. We liked the breakfast potatoes and waffles the most. Husband liked the pancakes. It is more expensive than a Dennys or IHOP, but the quality was better. Stopped in for breakfast last year when we were up there visiting and the wait was well over an hour, so skipped it. This year it was only 20 minutes, waited and got in. It has been forever since I have eaten at a Flap Jack Shack, I think it was over in Petoskey. This one has a 70's style decor, nice west facing patio and on a hill for a nice view. I got the breakfast burrito and my girl for the french toast. Burrito was like a breakfast burrito but covered in sausage gravy, was just ok. I would not get it again, messy with not much seasoning for flavor. French toast was also weird, not bad, but just was bland. Next time I am in the area I am going to skip it. The service was really good, which is unfortunate that they had to serve the really poor food that the kitchen created. We ordered a plethora of items, most of which was undercooked... looking at you side of sausage links. The flapjacks were thick, dense, dry (even with chocolate chips), and in my kids case, undercooked. The eggs were uneventful. The potatoes has no flavor. The shining part of the meal was the toast, but it was soaked in butter, taking away any potential taste of sourdough that might have come through. The coffee was good, I'm guessing it was prepared by the serving staff who seemed to know what they were doing. I lived in southern Indiana for a while and that has left me with a deep skepticism of anyone north of Indianapolis claiming to have good biscuits and gravy. Fourth year visiting but unfortunately not same experience as in the past! When ordering our breakfast entrées, we could not substitute anything for toast or hotcakes so we ordered the pumpkin hotcakes! When receiving our bill, we were each charged $6 per order for those and I was charged $6 for two glasses of unsweet iced tea. Our bill was $55 for two breakfasts, coffee & ice tea. When asking our young sever, she said that her supervisor had told her those pumpkin hotcakes would be a $6 up charge and that the ice tea is not refillable as soda is! Traverse has a bunch of brunch spots, honestly a few too many mediocre options. It's seems like every time we visit there is a long list of new places we "must try" only to be disappointed by most of them. Where do I tell people to go for brunch when they visit TC? Flap Jack Shack!!! Consistency is one of the hardest things for most restaurants to accomplish. I don't want to waste a brunch when I'm on vacation. I know when I go to the shack that my service, drinks and food is going to be exactly as I expect it to be. Get your skillets, pancakes, omelets. I have yet to take anyone here and they say "I didn't like my dish". I must warn you that if you are going on a weekend there might be a decent wait. Maybe get there early? Or have some great morning convo over the coffee that is set up in the waiting area. Large outdoor seating area. Most people I take giggle at the exterior of the place and yes I agree it's kinda silly looking, and yes the revamped interior still looks a bit cheesy too. It's charming silly appearance has grown on because everything else just works so well. If you are trying to impress your guests with a fancy looking brunch place: This is Not the place to take them. We had eaten dozens of times at this Flap Jack Shack pre-Yelp, but not recently because we no longer lived in Traverse City. The pancakes and French Toast were to die for. The place was always packed, even during traditionally low volume times. Saturday and Sunday mornings were times of long lines. We liked the other Flap Jack Shacks in Charlevoix and Petosky (now the Little Traverse Bay Cafe) but favored this one. So we found ourselves in Traverse City this afternoon, and we decided to have lunch there today. I should add a caveat that traveling from the Upper Peninsula back home 10 years ago, we took a detour to Traverse City to eat, and chose this restaurant. We regretted that decision. The building looked old. The food was uninspired. The service was comatose. We left thinking, "K Mart and Pontiac are not the only brand names that are dying." We speculated what might replace this restaurant once it was torn down. So, today, we were shocked, but in a good way. Still open and lots of cars in the parking lot? Walking in, we spotted first off what looked like a bar with a counter with stools. "So they have a Liquor License now?" we observed. The second thing we saw was a outdoor deck. The interior looked newer but like before booths outnumbered tables. I had the Reuben; she had the Turkey Club. Both came with shoestring fries. Everything was yummy. I don't generally identify servers in my reviews, but Summer served us, and she was perfect. It appears that the management of Flap Jack Shack found a way to revitalize this restaurant. I had lunch yesterday there with my sister. They were very busy serving gay pride tables. We got seated and both ordered the country fried steak. Meanwhile, my root beer was so flat I ordered a diet Pepsi. The waitress was friendly but wore her stress on her face and spent very little time with us. (We did leave her a nice tip, however). The meal was one of the worst in recent memory. The country fried steak had either been grossly overcooked or had been re-heated just for us. After a few bites, we both quit eating and didn't ask for carry-out containers. The French fries were also unacceptable, stuck together and tough as though they were reheated as well. The best thing on the table was the ketchup. Our meals each, with tip, cost $25. It was money badly spent. We left there wishing we'd made a different choice; rarely does this happen at the other places we go to like Applebees, Chilis, Olive Garden, Red Lobster. I suspect most people who have a decent experience are there for a fatty breakfast and sugary baked goods. You can have it. I will never return there again. read more

We stopped here for brunch (now called the flap jack shack) instead of heading downtown, because we figure this place would be quick, specializing in breakfast. after the waitress dropped off our drinks and took our order it was 40 minutes until she came back, & I seriously overheard the manager tell another table, 'it's like summer when we average 20-30 minute waits on tickets' how is that possibly acceptable at a breakfast spot? we asked if our food was near up she had no clue, at the 50min mark, we started scooting out of the booth to leave, and the food showed up, they forgot to actually dip my French toast in egg, I'm not quite sure they even cooked it, it was cold white bread covered in a tart berry sauce. I got the manager to take it off the bill, but really at that point the entire meal should have been written off. Having been a long time Traverse City visitor we were long overdue for our 1st visit to the Flap Jack Shack. Saturday morning as you'd expect are busy, the wait was however not long. The service was a little slow though our waitress got it all correct and even remembered our to go coffee cups. Now for the important portion - THE FOOD. It was very good for the price but sadly was not quite warm enough. We had waited for quite a while so we made it work and due to the busyness of the restaurant didn't ask for any adjustments or warmups. It was birthday dinner. Flap was slow, 3/4 tables. I ordered 22 Classic burger and fries medium on the burger. Says grilled bun, which it was. Burger needs some kind of seasoning, and bun was dry as a bone . Brioche would be a better choice. Fries were nice and hot, good! I was with two other people and their meals were about the same as mine kind of blah, the steak was nasty and the other person really didn't care for theirs either.
