Great food and service. Lots of pancake choices. I didn't realize my side order of cinnamon pancakes would come smothered in a heavy sugary sauce. I would expect that if you ordered pancakes as your main course. They were delicious! Just be aware if you're just expecting a stack of side pancakes (plain) you can add some syrup to, you get more than that. I scraped some of the frosting off and enjoyed them very much. I ordered the meatloaf Dinner to go but I had the ranch hand breakfast (grilled top sirloin, 2 eggs, hash browns & biscuits). I found the exterior clean & easily accessible. Parking was plentiful. The interior was well lit, clean & spacious with tons of booth seating. The staff was very quick to greet & seat me. They were friendly, warm, efficient, & competent. There was a salad bar that looked very fresh & had a substantial & varied of selection. There was 4 different soups to pick from also. The food came out pretty quickly. The scrambled eggs came out perfectly. Light & fluffy with just the right amt of melted cheddar cheese on top. They gave me a small side of salsa which was canned but still yummy. The hash browns were lightly browned. They had the just the right amount of crust & tender shredded potatoes. I am duly impressed by this particular franchise location. If I could give this place a zero I totally would do it. Our server, Angel, was very unprofessional and rude. She seemed to not care about her customers at all. That's the vibe I got anyway. I hade the Albuquerque omelette and it was bad. The jalapeños were like rubber, the cheese used tasted like plastic and there was hardly any chorizo in it. I absolutely love the retro feel of this place and couldn't wait to see if we had another breakfast option in TC. There's actually a nice view especially in the Fall since it sits up on a hill. That's about as good as it gets, I'm afraid. So that makes it a solid 2.5 but I just couldn't round up to 3. When Flap Jack is in your name, I expect some dang good flap jacks. I got one that was full of meat and the hubby got some Reese's pancakes. I was pretty disappointed in the quality of the pancakes. They were bland and tasted like an off brand mix or something. I don't mind a mix if you doctor it up or something but meh. I left half of them on the plate. The hash browns were good...with ketchup. Hot chocolate wasn't great either. Sigh. The hubby said the Reese's part of the pancakes was decent because chocolate and peanut butter slathered on anything gets the job done but he didn't like the pancakes either. Service was okay but not worth coming back for us. We're obviously in the minority because titans of local business were making deals and conversation so they have the locals locked down. read more

My family went to Flap Jack Shack on a Sunday. Our wait wasn't long, maybe 20 minutes. Our waitress greeted us promptly, and came back for our order relatively quick. As we watched other tables receive their food, it was apparent that our order had not been received by the kitchen. I could've appreciated an oversight, maybe one or two tables, maybe if she had told us there was not an order placed. After sitting for close to an hour, she told us our order had gone to a wrong table. it seems in that instance being honest might have served her better. If the order had gone to a wrong table, where was the other table's order? The reason did not seem feasible. We decided to wait another 15 minutes for them to cook our order, since by now we were starving. We thought for sure they would at least comp us a discount. Not only was no discount offered, there was an added 3% surcharge, on top of a pretty hefty priced breakfast that was over an hour late! When we asked what the surcharge was, she said it had to do with Covid. that doesn't even make any sense, but we told her to tell her boss that it's stealing. She did get the 3% surcharge taken off, but no offer for the over hour wait. I realize restaurants are busy and strapped for help, and I realize we could've made a stink and gotten our meal for free. Good business would've been to offer something if you want customers to return. We decided that we will not return, even after being patrons of the Flap Jack Shack for 50 years. Maybe if the food were awesome and a good deal price wis, but neither was the case, so we will not be back. read more

The rest of the food ordered was just as meh. Moreover we waited 45 minutes for our food and the waitress couldn't be bothered to give an explanation or an apology. I love breakfast food. The smell of hot steaming coffee...However when I came here and was seated on the patio it took about 7 minutes to get greeted by our server. A good suggestion may be asking for drink orders right away as a host. There was only one server present in an area of seven tables. The food was made in an adequate time manner. Tasted amazing. Our server did not check on us after we received our meals. If the order had been 100% correct it would've been a situation I could ignore however, we were given the wrong toast. She was nice enough but I believe the overwhelming amount of tables effected her performance. This experience won't keep me from visiting again, but I do think I'll be weary of the same thing. read more

This is the first time that I have ever written a review, but I cannot overlook the rudeness and ignorance of management at the Flapshack Shack. We drove six hours to meet with friends and family over breakfast. Initially we were so excited to be at the Flapjack Shack. However, the ignorance and willingness of management to make reasonable accommodations for a food allergy resulted in our party of 12 promptly leaving this establishment. We will NEVER visit this establishment again and we have warned all of our friends, family, and numerous food allergy social groups of the way we were treated. I love pancakes! So, this place has been on my bucket list for quite some time but my companions had always stuck their nose up at it because of it's old fashioned vibe. I love places like this though so at my first chance we pulled in. So glad I did. This will be my go to restaurant in Traverse for breakfast. Little did I know the Omelette Shoppe had bought it and renovated and revamped the menu. My son and I had the cherry stuffed French toast. Oh man was it good. My wife had the baked omelette and a very good bloody Mary. My daughter had the pigs in blankets. I got to finish hers off. Sausages as big as your big toe! MMMM. We left stuffed. So don't let appearances fool you and Flap Jack Shack don't change anything either. I love how you look. read more

Our first experience with this restaurant left a lot to be desired. We tried to again now two years later and once again we are extremely disappointed. Watched other parties after us get served and finish their meal while my party of 5 waited for our food for over 45 minutes. Waitress offered no apology or even acknowledgement. Restaurant had open tables so it certainly wasn't due to a Saturday morning crowd. We will not be giving Flap Jack's a third try. read more

This place is stuck in 1983. The music and the decor show you so. And the pancakes may have been made back then as well. If their schtick is retro then I get it, but a horrible execution of it. So we sit down and promptly feet stick to the floor and my shirt decided to become part of the table via some sticky substance stuck on the table. My daughter ordered pancakes that looked as though they were made last week with crusty glaze on top. The bacon was clearly cooked and microwaved on my plate. Eggs were fresh and good toast was old and I buttered and the staff was rude. I saw our waitress to take our order. Never saw her again and had to ask for the bill. Came in to Traverse City with my son and his family--Yes we'll go there for pancakes. This was the best place ever!! I had the cinnamon swirl flapjacks--perfection--not toooo sweet--just perfection. My son had the Full of it flapjacks--stuffed with bacon and sausage!!! Indescribable!!! The biscuits and gravy is wonderful too--the waffles are super fluffy with just right amount of crunch on the edges!! The service was awesome too!!! You won't be disappointed. Wonderful waitress, but the breakfast food was sorely lacking. Plain pancakes were heavy and dense, as if the batter had been made days ago! Scrambled eggs were dry, overcooked and tasted like they were made from a dry mix, not fresh eggs. Even the kids wouldn't eat them and the LOVE scrambled eggs. Went here for lunch with a group from work. Sadly, I'm working on eating healthier so I can't speak for the breakfast offerings. However, my group was pleased with what they had, and I saw everything from strawberry cheesecake pancakes to bacon pancakes to eggs. I had the Cobb salad. It was great! Portion size was great and had nice mix of lettuce and greens (as well as all of the other stuff like bacon, tomatoes, onions, etc). Service was a tad slow but I don't know if it was due to having a large group and they wanted to be sure everything was brought out at once? The server was nice though. We were staying nearby and thought we should try a local place vs a chain (Cracker Barrel) for breakfast. Food was not that good. Service outside was not great. It is a cool looking restaraunt but not worth the stop. For a pancake place, the pancakes were so dry no one could finish a short stack. I'd put this restaurant review at around 3.5 stars. Good service, if somewhat slow, food was good overall. I should've just ordered more adventurous, but was trying to be good. Our party of 3 visited the other day and ordered: some kind of meat omelet, oatmeal, granola & yogurt. The omelet was well-liked, the oats disappeared, the granola was okay. The service was excellent. The decor is possibly redone from the time of previous owner's, but still delightfully retro. I like the wooden beams on the ceiling, they reminded me of railroad ties. Pretty affordable also, most items in the 7-10$ range, plus or minus. read more

Don't believe the hype. This place is definitely overrated. According to their website this place is newly remodeled and can seat 240 people yet the decor is stuck in the 70's and they couldn't seat our party of 6 so we had to sit in separate booths. I ordered Biscuits and gravy and after waiting about an hour (short staffed I suppose) I received dry biscuits even with the gravy on em (hardly sausage gravy) & the pancakes were too tough to cut with a butter knife. My poached eggs came over hard and I ended up sending them back, the coffee is weak- but I drink it strong so I wont hold that against them. Overall this was a disappointing experience & I won't be visiting again. read more

When I used to live in Traverse City, my Dad and I often met here on a Sunday morning for breakfast before heading across the street to Meijer for grocery shopping. That was about eight years ago and I don't really remember the food being spectacular. It was decent but nothing to rave about. Visited again a few days ago while I'm in town visiting family (I live in California now). We had planned on going to Bubba's downtown but discovered they don't serve breakfast during the week. Bummer. So, we headed to the Flap Jack Shack. I ordered the eggs benedict which was their special. Let me just say that my Mom makes a mean eggs benedict so I'm kind of hard to impress when it comes to this particular dish. That being said, this was really the most mediocre eggs benedict I have ever had. I don't mind runny eggs, in fact, I prefer a creamy runny yolk...but whites that are still clear? Um...I'll pass. Our waitress was nice and they seem to have redecorated since last I visited...very retro. Cute. Which is the only reason why I gave it two instead of one star.
