We bought some dive computers here. They are advanced, and, well... we are not. The owner sat and worked with us for a few hours on the weekend to make sure we had everything setup the right way. Don't do your scuba review here. I am PADI AOW certified with about 80 lifetime dives but had not been in a year and went here for a review course before an international trip. I've had many review courses over the years and typically you suit up and get in the pool, practice buoyancy, mask clearing and buddy breathing. PADI requires only those three skills for the course and it's fun, but this instructor told me and the one other guy in the class at the outset he didn't believe in that and would test us on all 20 skills on their list and if we didn't like it we should leave now. After we'd paid. We spent the next 2.5 hours in the deep end of a 78 degree pool. It was like army basic training. And when I said I hadn't signed up to take all my gear off and put it back on while treading water he said I was whining. Go to Oceans First, much better. read more

Of course my big 100 air tank got delivered by another dive shop to Flatirons Scuba ... of course they called me right away to let me know it came to them somehow (they knew to call me because they had done a hydro test on it before)... of course I rolled up to retrieve it and then asked if they could inspect/recertify it on short notice... of course they inspected it and helped me out while I waited on the comfy couch. Barbie was informative,. friendly and excited for me. My fiance and I just completed our class instruction and confined water dives. We've passed our knowledge exams and we will be joining Flatirons in Homestead Crater in January to complete our open water dives. We worked with our primary instructor Barbie, with help from two other instructors, Phil and Shannon, with Lisa assisting. They were incredibly patient with the class's questions and our initial failed attempts at demonstrating skills in the pool, and instilled plenty of confidence as we moved through the course. All of the students in our class passed the knowledge exam. I can't speak highly enough about the professionalism, support, patience, and knowledge of the staff. We had a blast, and we can't wait to complete the course with them and get our open water diver certifications before we go dive the Maldives next year! read more

I took my SCUBA cert class here and the staff couldn't be friendlier. My instructor is Sean and he seems very competent and likable. The prices in the pro-shop do seem to be quite high however. I am all about supporting locally owned businesses, as I too was an independent retailer. However the prices are literally +double of what you can find the same equipment for online. I understand they have overhead and need to be a little more than online, but I was able to buy the same fins online for $100 less than the shop. That's pretty significant. That being said, when I need to pick-up something small, I will try to give them the business. They really seem to instill a sense of camaraderie with their fellow divers through customer appreciation events and organized trips. read more

These guys are simply the best. I have been going to Flatirons since they opened at 120th and Sheridan. I did my initial open water course at a different shop and did my advanced class with Rob from Flatirons. Great experience with a super teacher. I have referred several friends here for instruction. I gave my nephew a class for his birthday one year. He was working as a chef. The hours he worked were basically the same as when the classes were offered, so the guys worked with him and he ended up with basically a private course. When it came time to get our granddaughter certified we took her to Flatirons. She was just barely old enough and her instructor took great care to work with her and make sure the important information in the classes stuck in her young brain. At the shop where I did my first course I always felt pressured to buy something when I walked through the door. That has never been the case at Flatirons. Greg and Rob don't do the high pressure thing. I have actually had them talk me out of buying things! I could have stopped after the first sentence: These guys are simply the best! read more

Flatirons Scuba and Travel is the best dive shop in the Denver and Boulder Area! As a very active scuba diver in a land locked state, Flatirons Scuba meets all my needs. Rob and Greg (the owners) are very friendly and greet you at the door immediately. Both the owners (along with Charlie) have been in the business for a long time and know what divers and snorkelers need. They carry some of the most reputable brands in the business (Aqua Lung, Scuba Pro, Henderson) and they often have good deals on dive gear. Servicing your equipment is easy with them and they usually have a good turnaround time. In terms of instruction and scuba diving training, many of their instructors have been teaching for years and they make the classes fun and safe. Unfortunately, Flatirons Scuba does not have their own pool, but they keep good relationships with community pools around the area. Flatirons Scuba has great travel destinations and offer many different travel choices for divers and snorkelers (and they even have non-diving trips available). The owners and Charlie have been to most of the places they advertise and they make sure everyone going on the trips are prepared. The dive leaders are also really friendly, fun and competent divers. Super Rude! Went in to replace a mask with a broken seal and purchase a dive computer. I was questioned that my mask was even leaking. Yup, pretty easy to figure out if a mask is leaking. I was pointed to a mask similar to the one I already have and I was shocked at the price. I was laughed at and told he needed to "run a business". I was not shown masks in my price range or even asked if he could help me find something else in my price range online. After a quick search, I was able to find the same mask I was shown for 30-40% less in multiple locations. All within 5 minutes I was made to feel stupid and laughed at.... I obviously left without making any purchases, I will not return and I would not recommend to anyone. read more

I can't say enough positive things about this dive shop and their staff! I just completed my open water scuba certification with Flatirons Scuba and it was an awesome experience. The first weekend I completed my pool dives with Mike (instructor) and Mark (divemaster). I was nervous about scuba diving and they eased my nerves through their teaching style and encouragement. They gave me confidence going into my open water dives the following weekend. For the open water dives I went to Aurora Reservoir and completed the course under the direction of Caleb (instructor) and Nick (divemaster). I'll be honest, diving at the reservoir is not exactly the best time. Visibility is really low and there's just nothing to see. However, Caleb and Nick made the entire group feel comfortable, confident, and most importantly made us laugh. Even though it was terrible diving conditions, I'm really happy that I was able to complete my open water dives locally so when I'm on my honeymoon I can enjoy the dives! Caleb told us after you dive in the reservoir you'll feel really confident diving in beautiful oceans (totally believe it)! I really appreciate everyone in the shop that helped me along the way. They all were so supportive and made for a wonderful experience. Side tip: if you have challenges equalizing your ears buy the scuba ear plugs - life changing!!! read more

I really struggled with anxiety during much of the process and literally every single one of my instructors was there for me to help me get through the dives and be successful. A few months ago my wife and I decided that we would take scuba lessons for our upcoming trip to Belize. We talked to a few people and did a lot of research on yelp and going to different shops and we decided to drive a little bit further and use flat irons for our basic training so we could do our open waters on our upcoming Christmas vacation. We ended up buying mask and snorkel equipment from them and the service knowledge and laid-back approach of the staff was just what we were looking for. Never once did I feel pressure to buy the more expensive mask just the one that fit my face the best. We ended up getting lessons for our two older teenagers in when the mask was not fitting my 15-year-old daughter's face the way it should on the first day of the lessons they brought a bag of mass the next day for her to try so she couldn't find a mask that fit properly. And returned the mask for a street over exchange that she end up liking...it was less expensive than the one that we had bought the night before. Our instructor Russ very attentive, fun and engaging. The four of us had a blast. Even after it took my wife over an hour and a halfto learn one skill that of course my teenagers got in about two minutes....clearing your mask of water. She was having a pretty difficult time and never once where they condescending, they were very very patient as she was working very hard to get the skill down. For those of you that haven't dived there's a person called the dive master he kind of sits back and make sure everything's OK. I'm pretty sure his name was Dave during our training when my wife could not do the skill he helped her so the rest of the class could move forward until she got the scale down. She was very close to giving up that his patients and low-pressure approach was just what she needed. The thing I like the most about flat irons was their staff. They were very honest, Diving is not cheap. But they were very upfront with fees. And they were by far one of the best values in town. There is a dive shop literally five minutes from my house. I went in there and they told me that their fees were very very cheap and that other shops with nickel and dime you. But I just felt uncomfortable there and so I went back to flat irons and reviewed their pricing and at the end of the day they were about $400 less than the place next to my house. Ironically the shop close to my house had a bunch of Nicolin diming fees. Plus the staff on the shop close to our house, seemed a lot more pushy. So basically with flat irons you'll get a very good price on your training and staff that I felt truly cared that we got the right products in the right training thank you everyone at. I have more than 15 years of scuba diving experience and Greg and Rob are always willing to help with a friendly answer for any of my questions about parts and service of my gear. They even found a hard to find valve for my regulator and they just charged me for the part. Prices for service and parts are fair and competitive. After meeting Jay in our Enriched Air Class, we knew he was the right person to do our Rescue Diver Training which is a serious course where your instructor really matters. A number of years back I decided to take the plunge (pun intended) into the world of Scuba. I have, exclusively, done all my training with Flatirons Scuba including my initial pool work, class room work , and then open water at a very cold Carter lake. I have bought multiple wet suits along with a bunch of other equipment over the years, and most recently got my regulator serviced and took a Nitrox course which they setup for me personally since I couldn't fit into to their regular course schedule. The are always friendly and knowledgeable, and even though I am only in there every now and then they always seem to remember me. I suppose the only thing is that their prices are not always competitive with on-line, but I can tell you from experience there is a reason you want to buy locally. They stand behind all their equipment, and they will help you out with any questions. They have let me test out equipment, and refresh my memory before a trip during one of there pool classes at no charge. Thank you for all the years of great service. read more

Used to be a good store but service and customer service has gone away. I just had my husband and my regs serviced there ($350+) as we have done for many years and it was incorrectly serviced so it leaked and the octo free flowed. Thankfully we tested it out in the reservoir before our big trip. I went in right after and let them know that it wasn't serviced correctly and the lady in the store was snippy with me for saying it. I got a call from the manager (owner) letting me know that they only pay 10 dollars an hour to their employees so I shouldn't be giving them my complaints because that will cause them to quit. I said that I spoke to the person in the store at the time, that it was serviced incorrectly and I needed it tomorrow and that I was polite. When we went to pick it up (two things were incorrectly serviced - a diaphragm and the second stage) the lady was snippy again with my husband. I understand mistakes happen but customer service is about making sure things happen correctly without arguing. Sorry Flatirons after 15 years of coming to you we won't be coming back. read more
