I arrived 5 minutes before my 8:00am appointment and I checked in online to ensure that I was ready for the appt when called. The doctor leisurely walked in at 8:23am, said hello to the staff as he walked by then exited the waiting area. I was called in to the exam room at 8:30 am. After a brief exam by the tech, I'm still waiting to see the doctor and it's 9:10am. If patients are expected to arrive on time why are the docs permitted to walk in late? First time seeing this doc and I don't have a good feeling. Do better with your time Flaum Eye and have more respect for your patients' time. read more

I had LASIK eye surgery done last week. I had both eyes corrected for distance vision, as well as having astigmatisms in both eyes corrected. It was faster, easier and more pleasant than I could have imagined, and I am so glad I chose Flaum! I started my journey by having consultations done at all the places offering laser surgery in Rochester (Roch Eye Assoc, Robbins and Flaum). Ten years ago I did the same thing, but because of my astigmatism, I was told my vision could not be corrected to 20/20. Technology has changed a lot in the last 5 yrs, so I was anxious to to see if things were different and if all the places would agree I could now be corrected. Everywhere I went I heard the same message that if you were not a good candidate they wouldn't do the surgery. In my case, I was happy to hear the that my vision and astigmatism could be fully corrected with the lasers of today. Ultimately what made me choose Flaum was their thoroughness. I attended an hour-long seminar during which we watched a comprehensive Powerpoint presentation, heard from all their staff doctors, got to ask our own questions, and took a tour of the facility. After completing the seminar, I signed up for a 2-hour personal consultation. The $100 fee was waived because I attended the seminar. During the consultation, my eyes were dilated, and the size of my pupils were measured. In addition, they mapped the surface of my eye, did all the usual tests you have done at the eye doctor, and showed me the exact nature of my aberrations and explained what they would do to correct them. I thought the level of information presented to me was excellent. I then told my primary care physician about my decision to have LASIK and when I told them I had chosen Dr. Scott MacRae at Flaum my doctor told me she was glad because he is hands down the best. Every person I came into contact with was professional, thorough, patient, informative, etc. Someone at Flaum was always available to answer my questions, either by phone or by email. I felt very confident in their abilities and recommendations, and I was not disappointed. I could go on and on about my exact experience under the laser and during the first week of healing, but since that is very subjective I'll leave off here. I highly recommend Flaum, but also recommend you do your research and check out all the places to find the one that feels best for you. Laser surgery is permanent, and you will have a relationship with the doctor and his staff for at least a year after, so making sure you are comfortable is really key! read more

It's been four days since my LASIK surgery at Flaum Eye Institute and it's wonderful to be able to see without the assistance of glasses or contacts! Simply to wake up in the morning and not have to fumble for my glasses is amazing! Years ago I mentioned my desire for surgery to my optometrist who quickly squelched the idea. He deduced that my age, the condition of my eyes, and some other fatuity disqualified me. Having found a phenomenal optician, that provided a steady diet of funky glasses, I was content. Earlier this spring I took my Mom to have her cataracts removed -- NOT at Flaum. While waiting in the patient lounge I flipped through the company's multiple booklets and brochures, discovering that much advances had occurred in LASIK in recent history. I began researching a number of local facilities that performed LASIK surgery and was immediately impressed with Flaum Eye Institute. One of the reasons they rose above the rest was because the staff was prompt, professional, and courteous. I chose to attend one of their seminars before sitting down for a one-on-one consultation. It was super thorough and comprehensive. We were introduced to many of the staff members we would be regularly interacting with: Dr. MacRae, the surgeon; Dr. Dickerson, the ophthalmologist; Wendy, (I am not precisely sure what her title is, but she is with you throughout each step of your LASIK journey), along with several administrative staff. They tutored us on the history of LASIK, Dr. MacRae's lengthy and notable career, the physiology, technology, and science behind LASIK, as well as other facets of the process via PowerPoint presentation and lectures. Video of an actual surgery was shown -- which I refrained from watching! The seminar concluded with a Q&A session and a tour of the facility. We left with a folder full of information which included a print out of the PowerPoint. When I went in for my one-on-one consultation with Dr. Dickerson, he explained precisely what my issues were -- concluding that, indeed I was a good candidate for the surgery. Afterward one of the administrative staff reviewed the legal and financial details with me in private. She clearly explained what the fee covered, as well as some possible future scenarios. (I will tell you that Flaum is not the least inexpensive provider. I could have gone elsewhere and saved anywhere from $300 - $1200. However, I deemed them to be the most qualified and capable -- by far -- and eye sight is not something that should be gambled with.) By the time the procedure came along I was well informed of what was going to take place. The toughest part was wrapping my brain around the idea of having a laser pointed at my eye. The staff, recognizing it's more mental "pain" and stress than anything else, repeatedly reassured and informed me of what was occurring. I was aware of every noise, smell, and movement before it happened, eliminating undue distress or alarm. When my Mom had her post-op session at another facility, I found the employee to be hurried and blunt. After my surgery Wendy sat down with my husband and I, and in contrast, was thorough, kind, professional, and answered all of my questions patiently. You relationship with your LASIK surgeon will be a long one (part of the fee includes one day, one week, and one month follow-up). Make sure you choose the best. Got my LASIK done here March 2013. A year later and I couldn't be happier. It's like I never wore glasses. $100 for the initial consultation which lasts about an hour and a half and you will be told if you are a good candidate for LASIK or not. I have had friends who have been here after I recommended this place and some of them have been told they are not good candidates. They will not offer it if they don't think you'll benefit which is great. The consultation fee is subtracted from you surgery total if you do decide to get it done. They also hold regular seminars if you have questions about LASIK or just want information. Everything from the initial consultation to the surgery the post op and the subsequent office visits have been very satisfying experiences and all staff members have been very welcoming attentive and helpful. Dr. McRae did a great job and has lived up to his reputation as one of the leading eye surgeons in the area. He was recommended to me by the chief of ophthalmology at the University of Rochester and Rochester General Hospital who I know through my profession and it was the right decision. I will recommend them to anyone considering LASIK. This is the real deal. There's just something about getting LASIK done at the mall with a Groupon that is wrong (LASIK MD I'm looking at you!) Dr. MacRae.Performed Lasik Eye surgery to correct my mid range vision, after doing so I now have permanently damaged to my eye sight. He refused to run any of the tests. He kept insisting it would all pass. Finally I turning to another surgeon in town . Doc Reed. After many tests I finally was given some answer's. Doc MacRae, Damaged my pupils . I have to use drops every day for the rest of my life or I see double. I can't tolerate bright light even from indoor lighting. I have constant spasms. The medication I have to use is called Alphagan, its quit expensive. Doc Reeds office has taken pictures of the Damage witch show white like patches causing the distorted vision. They suggested I get fitted for Hard contacts that can help reshape the eye, help with the distortion. Again very expensive. Theses are custom fit and not comfortable. My eye sight was 100% better before the surgery Doc MacRae has done nothing to Acknowledge the damage and pain he has caused me. Please don't trust this Man. read more

The little things no one else would even notice that they do to help patients through every stage and really walk the journey alongside of them, well, I've just not seen this type of incredible care in any other ophthalmology/LASIK practice - and I've been to hundreds of them across 3 countries in my previous job. Let me give you my professional history as it is relevant to this review: I started out as a certified ophthalmic assistant at age 22, specializing in refractive surgery with corneal doctors for about 5 yrs, and by age 27, I was hired by Bausch & Lomb to be a Clinical Applications specialist for the Northeast territory. Basically, I trained doctors, techs, and nurses how to use the excimer laser, the diagnostic equipment, and the microkeratome. But my job was often times comprehensive, in that some sites were just beginning, so I went through the whole laser suite/surgery center set up and flow from beginning to end with them, including first cases. Often sites had brand new staff who never had experience assisting or working up LASIK patients. Many times throughout our training position, myself, or other trainers around the country, were teaching from scratch. I did more than train as well: collected outcomes data, lectured at special meetings, devised and developed training tools, and worked with doctor consultants and engineering colleagues to optimize results and software. Within a couple of years, I became the National Training Manager for the USA. A couple years after that and I was promoted to the head of the Training & Clinical Applications Specialist department for North & South America. So to tell you that I've worked with a ton of LASIK practices, doctors, and techs/nurses is a giant understatement. I've had so much experience in the field with other practices that when I decided to hang up my travelling hat, I knew the only place I wanted to help manage was Dr. MacRae's practice, if they would have me :). Being the patient is completely different than managing the practice day to day, and until I experienced my evaluation, consent, and surgery from the other side, I truly couldn't appreciate the skill set each individual brings to the patient. My team literally asked me to critique them and let them know what they could have done better - not too many people can show that kind of vulnerability. And they weren't out to "impress" me, they treated me just as they would anyone else who came in for an appointment or surgery. The pressure was on the night I had my surgery with 30+ Optometrists in our office and many people at home watching live surgery, and not one person on staff faltered or blinked an eye - they all hosted a large group of doctors for a couple of hours before surgery (after being at work since 7:30am) in addition to teaching/explaining the procedure as it was happening...and they simply rose even higher in their quality of care, efficiency, and thoroughness. Would you feel nervous having surgery knowing the team had been working for 12 straight hours just prior? While we don't treat this way, this situation was the case for me! You would have thought I was the first case of the day. I've seen and heard these technicians and doctors talk and work with/treat thousands of patients in the last (almost) 4 years...being on the receiving end, well, wow, I couldn't be more proud of each and every one. I struggled to find even 1 thing to critique - outside of waiving a magic wand to fix my eyes, of course smile emoticon:) While I know no one is perfect, and don't expect perfection of anyone, including myself(!), they were darn close to it, and I know that with each patient who walks through our door, calls our office or emails us questions, I can, with 100% confidence, say this team we've assembled is unsurpassable in experience, skill, kindness, care, and heart. read more
