Another awesome meal! We enjoyed drinks, main, and dessert as we celebrated a milestone birthday.

Very disappointing visit for my first, and last, time amidst all the hype of others. We had a party of four and shared a few appetizers, the shrimp cocktail and the seared scallops. The scallops were medium in size and were served only two on a plate for $16, way overpriced for what was served. Shrimp cocktail had four for about the same price but nothing special. This was the start and it went down from there.........The flank steak entree was a tough cut by all accounts and the scallop entree only had four(4) scallops for $34, again way overpriced for a scallop dish. The other two entrees, the filet and the short rib were OK but again not worth the price of admission. We had coffee, espresso and four deserts and along with drinks we racked up a healthy tab. Now for the worst part.....after 2 hours of wining and dining we we were asked to leave our table!! The excuse was that they had other people waiting yet as we walked out at 7:45pm, there were seven(7) empty tables including two large tables on the main dining floor. We sat in the bar area for the next 15 minutes and no one entered after we left. We then waited outside for another 15 minutes and still no one entered. I doubt they were going to have enough clientele to fill those tables after 8:15pm as that is when most establishments are beyond the nightly rush. I have never, in 50 years of dining out, been asked to leave my table after dropping $250 plus on a dinner. This was incredible and uncalled for and we, the four of us, will NEVER be back again and not recommend the place to anyone. This is NOT customer service and will only to continue to drive people away. Good Luck in future and you need to properly train your staff. read more

After having such a wonderful experience at Lunch, my wife and I decided to try dinner at Flavor on Main. Wow! the Filet Mignon was amazing! Cooked to perfection. My wife had the Crab Cakes and again, blown away! Big chunks of crab with no fillers! The ambiance was even nicer by candle light. Their service is unmatched anywhere in Culpeper. If there is one complaint (and I use the word lightly) the bread was just a bit salty. But I assure you it did not take a away from my evening one bit. The Dr. says I should cut out bread anyway! read more

Always a delight coming in. Service is always great with servers that remember you to the point of asking if you want the same cocktail or wine you got last time. Food is consistently great. Overall not bad. The best analogy I can give you is if you can image a student driver in a formula1 race car, that's how the steak was. The steak was a perfect cut, sadly it was not seasoned and cooked medium well even though I asked for medium. The experience was nice. I wouldn't put this place in the same category as a traditional pinky out joint. For good food and a nice ambiance this is probably the best you'll get in Culpeper. Little gem in downtown Culpepper. Service was prompt, respectful and just enough contact where our needs were totally met without feeling rushed or over cared for. Food was just delicious, would highly recommend the gnocchi starter, light fluffy and spot on. The Duck and flank steak was also just spot on with temperature and flavor. You know how you go to a great place the first time and then you go again and you are disappointed? Well, IT DID NOT HAPPEN! Hubs and I took his mom out for her final day with us before heading back to NY. I had the chicken parm started with their absolutely fabulous calamari. Hubs had the duck sausage started with their equally amazing shrimp. Mom had the scallops and couldn't get over how amazing her dish was. She kept saying, "oh my god" between bites. We followed up with strawberry cheesecake, cannoli, and gosh this chocolate decant thing...no clue the name. The service was impeccable. Still, I have nothing to wish was different or better. I doubt I ever will. We adore this restaurant from the hostess, the waitstaff, and clearly the most talented chefs in Virginia! read more

Culpeper is a cute town and has awesome food. We've been trying to go here but keep forgetting the limited hours of operation, especially Sunday and Monday! That's town wide; Not just Flavor on the Main. The food was fantastic! We had the crab tower appetizer, unexpected presentation, and thoroughly satisfied with our decision. My husband got the 32 DAY DRY AGED FILET MIGNON which was delicious, made as requested, medium, and well flavored. I had the SOUTHERN COMFORT TRADITIONAL ... Lightly fried which I appreciated. Overall we we're glad we had to chance to eat there... We'll be there again for another date night :) read more

Everything was excellent! We tried two appetizers before dinner, the oyster Rockefeller and the stuffed meatloaf, both were awesome. The meatloaf was bacon wrapped and stuffed with mac and cheese, about the best appetizer I have ever had. For the main course, I had scallops placed on very tasty risotto and peas. My husband had flank steak on potatoes. It was perfectly cooked and very tender. This was one of the best dinners we have had in a very long time. read more

Came to Culpepper this past week for a wedding and got to enjoy brunch this past Friday at this adorable and trendy restaurant. The buffalo chicken wrap was great, and the bring your own bubbles was a delightful option. The cocktail list was extensive and very hip and trendy, the gatsby was my personal favorite. read more

This just in from the "Long Overdue Review Department", with strong appreciation given to the "Glad I Take Notes Department". Unearthed almost too late a $100 gift certificate for this spot that my brother had sent me for Xmas 2016 & realizing that it was about to expire, husband & I popped in for dinner on 12/19/17. And were very glad that we did, as that dinner was 100% better than the previous time. Husband started off with his favorite "Gin Rickey", which he really enjoyed. At first I was tempted to try their "Bees Knees", but the menu description had it containing orange juice which didn't really appeal to me. (Normally it's supposed to contain just gin, honey, & lemon juice.) Instead I ending up going with one of my, my mother's, & great aunt's all-time favorite cocktails - a "Sidecar" (basically cognac, Cointreau, & lemon juice). Let me tell you, they make a mean one here & it was perfectly concocted & delicious. For appetizers, husband had the crab cake, which came with a small chicory side salad. It was pure lump crabmeat & no filler, but was awfully bland (he gave me a taste). Even a little salt would've helped. But that was really the only snafu of the evening. I had the fried calamari, which was a decent portion (probably around a dozen pieces) & was served with a small garnish of slaw & an extremely spicy & utterly delicious dipping sauce that seemed to be comprised of some type of Chinese-style apricot/peach duck sauce with a goodly amount of chili-garlic sauce mixed in. It was addictive, & husband said it should have been served with his bland crab cake - lol! Anyway, I loved it! For entrees, husband went with the "Shrimp Fra Diavolo", which consisted of a large portion of linguine topped with large shrimp in an extremely spicy tomato sauce. Have to admit that, unlike any other restaurant we've ever visited outside of authentic Szechuan, when this place says "spicy" the dish is definitely spicy (which is the way it should be). I went with one of that night's specials, the "Duck Duo", which was a seared sliced duck breast & a confited (is that a word?) duck leg served over a bed of roasted red potatoes with a garnish of pencil asparagus. It was beautifully presented & absolutely delicious. And, lucky for me, just a little too much for one sitting, so I ended up taking about half of it home for an encore performance as my lunch the following day. We both enjoyed a nice bottle of Prosecco with the meal, as well as slices of fresh creamy cheesecake for dessert. Service was prompt, friendly, & professional without being intrusive or cloying. The original bill for this spectacular feast came to $140, but with the $100 gift certificate from my brother, we ended up just having to leave $68. (Of course we always tip on the original amount, as everyone should under these circumstances.) Bottom Line: Although we haven't been back yet, we definitely plan to soon. read more

Well, I can only tell you of my experience. The atmosphere was good and wait staff was very good. Everything about this restaurant says great place. However unfortunately my order was not great and it made me actually sick to my stomach. I ordered the sesame seared tuna which was ok however arrived at room temperature. That should have been a warning. Then I ordered the Shrimp and grits. A dish I've had many times. The grits were full of cheese and very thick. Not for my taste. When I arrived home, I quickly realized eating the "seared" tuna was a mistake. Just my experience, everyone at my table enjoyed their meal. read more

A great place to take a date. Decor is set in the 1920's but the menu is quite contemporary with wonderful flavorful dishes presented in an elegant manor. The wait staff was friendly and courteous. I liked the roasted red pepper bisque, the exotic mushroom fettuccine. My date had arugula salad w salmon that liked delicious. She said it was. I recommend this restaurant as a classy all around dining experience. read more

This restaurant has an amazing atmosphere and top of the line food. I sat at a table near the kitchen and you can watch the chef (very cute, by the way) and his staff prepare your food. The wait staff was so helpful and courteous. They even helped me feel alright when my date was a late show. I highly recommend this quaint place in Culpeper. read more

Being our first time here, my husband and I were delighted to find this little gem in the heart of downtown Culpeper! Everything from the staff to the super spectacular food was very impressive! Being a former chef, the outstanding attention to detail was very evident! Although we were there for the Valentine's Day special dinner we didn't have a chance to experience the raved about homemade pasta and gnochhi entrees that the chef makes by hand in house! We will be sure to try it on our next visit! The only thing was that they don't have a sign directly on the outside of the restaurant so you really have to know were it is. Once you've found it you'll know where to look. I would also like to do a special shout-out to our waiter Joseph how was adorable! I visited here for the first time during Restaurant Week, and was blown away by their incredible dining experience they offered. Small space without being crowded, great food, warm atmosphere. Their cod was perfectly cooked, as was the steak, and their desserts were mouth-watering. Overpriced, service good, food average. Had dinner with some friends there and the server was nice and professional. It was pretty loud in the restaurant. The menu is VERY limited. We all ordered something different and no one in my party was overly impressed. Very small portions. My steak was ok, my potatoes Au gratin were pretty tasteless and my asparagus consisted of 5 tiny stalks way over cooked. 5 of us with a few beers was $200.00. Way too much for what we got and for the quality. There are much better restaurants around Culpeper. read more

Been to Flavor on Main in Culpeper half a dozen times in the past year, make a point of stopping by and enjoying the great cocktails and food every time we pass through. Never had any troubles before! To my surprise this evening, we arrive and order our food and drinks expecting the same. Drinks were great, app was great but began to notice that patrons who had arrived after us were starting to get their food! No worries...until they started finishing their food and ordering desserts, paying their bills. The waitress, who was great by the way, began to apologize for the wait. Food finally came, great flavor, if only a little cool. Asked for the check and the chef/manager...who proceeded to make a scene and blame us for too high of expectations...that it takes 35 minutes to cook a steak. Most embarrassing experience I have ever had at a restaurant. Truly disappointing considering the quality of food and service in the past. If you go, make sure that you don't expect to be treated with respect, I certainly don't and will not be returning. read more

Just had dinner there with my husband celebrating our anniversary. I have to admit, after reading the "few" negative reviews, I was not expecting much, but wanted to have our own experience. This is not our first time dinning at Flavor, but it's been a while since we've been there. From the host at the door to the bartender to the waitresses/waiters we had nothing other than smiles, pleasant and great service. The appetizers (Flavors salad & wings) were delicious and ahhhh the Entrées (the flank & filet mignon) were absolutely fabulous. We loved our our food and service and will definitely return. My husband and I had our first dining experience here last night. To say we were pleased would be an understatement. From the time we stood at the front entrance to the time we left, we were in awe of just how incredible the experience was. The decor is impeccable and well-appointed. The waitstaff was professionally dressed and conducted themselves accordingly. We were immediately seated and water was brought to our table. Our waitress was so friendly and attentive the entire time. She took our drink orders. I ordered a Mint Julep and heaven.....simply heaven. We started with the fried calamari. I guess I should have started with this review that hubs and I are extremely picky foodies. We know what we like, how we want it, and will pay whatever to get it. We don't do chain restaurants and we make it a point to support all local businesses. Anyhow, one of our tests of a restaurant of this caliber is to order the fried calamari and see what is what. This dish was amazing. The calamari was not mushy or still, the breading not too light and not too thick. The sauce complemented the flavors of both the calamari and the amazing peppers served with the dish. I knew we were headed for a great meal at this point. I then ordered a drink called the Hoosegow--another amazing cocktail. (Yes I am up to having two drinks). We then ordered our entrees. I had the salmon and my husband had the Chicken Arianna. The salmon again, perfection. So many restaurants overcook salmon and it loses all its flavor. The salmon was served with fingerling potatoes and encircled with a divine sauce. My husband's reaction to the chicken was "damn" between bites. Needless to say, we are now beyond impressed and wondered why we didn't get to this place as soon as we moved back to the area in October. Oh yes, I ordered another drink, The Harlem Swank. To top off the meal we then ordered, these squared ice creme sandwich pieces, and I got the brownie drizzled with caramel sauce and vanilla ice creme. Nothing about that dish came from a box or a bucket. All of it was created in that glorious kitchen by an amazingly talented chef and his staff. My husband was moved to go to the window in the kitchen and compliment the chef on the line of masterpieces that were brought to the table. I wish I could come up with just one thing we noted that was off....just one, but I can't there were none. I highly recommend that if you are anywhere near the Culpeper area, you owe it to your taste buds to give this place a go. We will be back. Outstanding place. read more

This restaurant was our go to for the last few years. We haven't been here in quite some time, and went for a special occasion. The waiter we had was so soft spoken, never introduced himself either, and seemed a bit out of his element. The place was not packed at all, but it took 45 minutes to get our appetizers. We ordered probably the easiest things to execute too; shrimp cocktail, and the seared tuna. I finally got my shrimp cocktail, and they didn't come out with my husbands tuna. No one said sorry, or anything. They just said it will be right out, and we got it 15 minutes later. I understand mistakes happen, but an apology goes quite a long way. The shrimp were over cooked, by a lot, and the tuna was meh. We had ordered the NY strip and fries, and I ordered the surf and turf special. When I had asked the waiter if it was the one with the soft shell crab on it he said yes. I added lobster to my dinner. We had now been there for an hour and a half. They said there were no ny strips so my husband got the prime rib instead. When the food came out, I was a bit baffled. My plate had a filet, scallops, Brussels sprouts, like 2 tablespoons of mashed potato and an uncracked lobster tail on it. At this point, I wasn't going to bother sending this back. We had already been there so long and the waiter was again MIA. The steak was cooked medium well, I ordered medium rare. The scallops had zero color, the Brussels sprouts were hard as a rock. The lobster tail, which I had to cut through the shell with a knife (never seen it served like that as a stand-alone) was so over cooked i could have chewed on it for an hour. The prime rib my husband ordered was over cooked, served with a teaspoons worth of sauce, and the potatoes that came with where were sopping with oil. So two hours and 180$ later, we were left with disappointment. This is precisely the reason we stopped going to Foti's. I don't know what's happening around here but one of the biggest perks of living in this town was the array of great food and service, and that seems to be disappearing Update 1/1. The food was AWFUL. Ordered the "lobster bisque", which had, zero lobster in it, was room temperature and tasted like cream with salt water and extra salt. I ordered the flank steak which was my go to back when the restaurant was good. The steak was gray, no sear, and tasted like pure soy sauce with salt on it. The potato gratin which used to be amazing was a sloppy mess, and the potatoes were not cooked through. They gave me 4 tiny asparagus, that were like 2 inches long, and cooked to death. The plate looked like it was plated by throwing the food from 3 feet away, and tasted like it was then run through a salt mine. I tasted my husband tomahawk pork, on special, and it tasted like salt pork, the kind you use like an inch of to flavor an entire pot of greens. It was so tough and dry, and the salt was nauseating. I actually had to spit it out, which I have never done. The green beans were so overcooked they were shriveled and brown, the potatoes were unevenly cut and basically raw and had zero flavor. The lobster tail I ordered to go with my steak was again, really overcooked, I couldn't chew through it. It must have been frozen and defrosted a couple times after it was cooked because it had absolutely zero flavor to it. I can't believe how far down hill this place went. read more

I had a terrible lunch experience here. I walked in for an early lunch. I already knew what I wanted so ordered the chicken salad wrap in lettuce leaf right away. 30 minutes later I still did not have my food. The waitress gave the excuse that there was only one chef when there's normally two, but I was literally the 4th person in the restaurant and no one walked in after me. When I finally got my food, it was nothing like the description on the menu. The menu said it had lemon and cilantro. There was neither and it was flavorless. And it had raisins in it. NOT what I ordered. I ate because I was hungry and working and had no more time to find something else. I won't write any restaurant off after one bad experience because any establishment can have an off day, but I was very upset after this. Update: The owner of the establishment very quickly contacted me and offered a gift certificate and promptly mailed it to me. I live far away so I wasn't able to use it yet, but will post another update after I do. Adding a star for caring and follow through. read more

Friendly staff, good food, nice atmosphere. Went here with some colleagues. I ordered the tuna appetizer which was well executed and full flavor. Several sauces complemented the meat. I then had shrimp and grits. The flavor was well enough but the grits were ore al dente than i am used to. Portions were reasonable. Good place to visit if you are in town. read more

My wife & I had been planning for a while to try Flavor On Main, so we decided her birthday would be the perfect occasion. We were skeptical initially, having visited other restaurants with a heavy appeal utilizing retro design but always seeming to run into a wall on the culinary end. That is not the case with Flavor On Main. I made our dinner reservations conveniently here on Yelp. We arrived 10 mins after our reservation time, due to weather complications, trees in the road, etc - but the friendly staff accommodated us immediately upon our arrival. Back to that retro design - Flavor On Main is an early 1900's cinematic/glam/noir vibe with modern touches. Portraits of Joan Crawford & other movie greats adorn the walls. The overall design hearkens back to the dinner clubs you would see in films from 1930's-40's. We loved it. On to the food... For appetizers we enjoyed their fresh bread accompanied w Himalayan Salted Butter. We also ordered the Crab/Cucumber Tower - which is a blue crab dip with avocado and cucumber stacked w greens, finished with an Asian sauce, lightly drizzled. That's the best way I can describe it, other than to say that it was amazing. For dinner, my wife ordered the Grouper, which came with roasted Brussels sprout petals and a wild rice with an amazing mushroom cream sauce, apparently infused w Frangelico. Cooked perfectly, tasted awesomely. I ordered the crabcakes, which were served w asparagus atop truffle oil potato mash, complimented by a remoulade sauce with a little bit of extra smokiness to it. I loved the crab cakes - they were delicate, coated in panko & pan sauteed. I appreciated the lack of filler in the crab cake, allowing for the freshness of the crab to shine through. Asparagus cooked perfectly, and the mashed potatoes were seasoned nicely, didn't go crazy on the truffle factor. It can be make or break with truffle oil - this was definitely make. Dessert - we got a slice of pistachio pie & a slice of banana pie, which were incredible. We took dessert to-go - bc we were too full to enjoy it there. No, you will not leave Flavor On Main hungry. In all, Flavor On Main is amazing. They are passionate about food & about creating aesthetic & culinary experiences for patrons. On our way out, my wife & I thanked them audaciously, proclaiming their rock stardom. 5 Stars. read more
