Came by for dinner the other night and it was a tasty experience. Made a reservation and our table was ready upon arrival. Parking is available in the private lot or on nearby residential streets. Dining is available either inside the dining room, at the bar, or outdoors on the covered patio. Flea Street is featured in the Michelin guide. Our waitress was phenomenal the entire evening, being very sweet and attentive. She was quite talented too! ;) Meal started off with the complimentary biscuit, served with a side of beautiful butter, salt, as well as a piece of carrot. This was decent as the biscuit was merely lukewarm. The lamb chop as a snack was quite tasty. These were sold per piece and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The farmers salad, dungeness crab cake, as well as the cured trout small plates were all quite tasty. Loved how premium and light the farmer's salad was. The dungeness crab cake was super light and tasty too! The cured trout was excellent with the homemade potato chips! The cioppino was gigantic and perfect for sharing. It featured a ton of premium seafood, from clams, mussels, calamari, shrimp, as well as a couple pieces of black cod fish along with a few pieces of toasted bread! Finished off the meal with an apple galette which was tasty and served with a scoop of ice cream which was surprisingly a touch lacklustre... Flea Street is an icon in Menlo Park so it was both sad and shocking how disappointed we were in our latest visit. * Food was inventive, tasty (saucing on oysters so creative, smoked trout on chips fun!), but a few critical misses (lamb chop was overcooked, mocktail was sour and otherwise bland). * Prices have been hiked so high to be on par with Michelin starred restaurants, but this is no Protege. * Portion size of every main dish was small - felt stingy. On that note, it seems penny-wise pound foolish to charge $4/person for extra table biscuits - this was new * Service was friendly but a bit amateur - some communication problems, got our order wrong. * Outdoor seating can be loud when Alameda has higher traffic. Due to summer, it was fairly quiet. * Oddly, a Carl Carlton album seemed to be on repeat last night - we heard it cycle through twice (Bad Mama Jama). Flea Street has been doing farm-to-table since the 1980s, and somehow we had never been there until last Friday night. Glad to discover it! This place is a cute little neighborhood spot that you might accidentally drive by. They have cute mismatched china plates and a comfortable atmosphere. The food was all 5 stars. We had: Small starter: smoked trout Seasonal salad (we didn't notice it came with meat on it. That was the only bummer--we're pescatarians, so discarded that.) Entrees: Greek islands black cod with wheat berries and veggies; definitely 5 stars Loved the cocktails too. Well-balanced and we appreciated that they weren't overly sweet at all: Pumpkin smash with bourbon Rye manhattan Pumpkin espresso martini I appreciated that the service staff let us know about the automatic 20% gratuity service charge they add to the bill. I tried this place for the first time and it was okay. The parking is difficult especially if the lot in the back is full/almost full. The ambiance inside is really nice though and the service is great as well. The menu isn't too big and there's not many vegetarian options. We got complimentary buttermilk bread which came with butter and tomatoes which was nice. For the appetizer we got the toast which was the only vegetarian option. The spread on it wasn't very good and I didn't love the taste. For my entree I got the carbonara and asked for it with no meat. It was very expensive for the portion size. The flavor was okay and noodles weren't cooked that well. The drink I got was really good- the spicy watermelon margarita. For dessert we got the dark chocolate cake/pie and cherry ice cream. The taste was off for both items so I probably wouldn't get again. All the food and drink was plated nicely but overall not worth the price. read more

I have always had Flea Street as the best restaurant in the area. Had not dined here in many years since moving to LA. Was happy to return for dinner this weekend. I admire both the food and the ethos. Have a lot of respect for the way Chef Cool runs the business. Overall, I am afraid I was not as impressed this time as I have been in the past. It's still an excellent restaurant - I love the dining room, and the service was warm and professional. But there were enough small details that fell just a bit short that I can't help feeling mildly disappointed. For an appetizer I had the lamb chop. This was the highlight of the evening by far. Probably the most perfectly prepared lamb chop I've ever had. There was no pink when I cut it, which scared me, but it was so tender and delicious. The pistachio crust and whatever sauce came with it complemented each other beautifully. The buttermilk biscuit was good, but not mind-blowing. I prefer plenty of versions I've had in the South. Personally I'm not a fan of a pale biscuit. I think one wants some browning for depth. The butter was beautiful, very nice presentation and really excellent butter. Loved the Maldon salt but the little spoon was useless; you can't pick up less than like 20 grains at a time, which is far too much to put on a bite of bread. So it felt gimmicky in the end. I also didn't get the pumpkin seeds thing. Our server said you can eat them whole, but I found trying to do so quite unpleasant. Too much chewing. We mostly ignored these. For the main course I had the mushroom risotto and the vegetarian tasting. To be honest, neither dish seemed particularly inspired to me. The mushroom risotto was tasty but did little to elevate beyond the sum of its parts. It tasted like arborio rice with cheese and wild mushrooms, which it was. Mine badly needed salt, and I am no saltnik :/ I was disappointed to have to season my food at such a fine restaurant. In fairness, this has never happened to me at Flea Street before. Biggest letdown for me was the vegetarian tasting, which I've always wanted to try but never summoned the courage to order in lieu of meat. The polenta was delicious and perfectly cooked, but the romesco lacked depth of flavor for me. The artichoke pie was bland, mostly tasting of, well, artichoke. The green olives in my opinion were an odd choice of garnish for a dish that already mostly tasted green-herbaceous; I would have preferred some contrast. I liked the flavor of the hearty bean soup but it needed more complementary acidity for my taste. The root vegetables, frankly, were just boring and felt low effort. Also, some of my parsnips were undercooked. I like a toothsome veg, but this was actually hard in the middle. Last time I ate here, I was blown away. This time I had a good dinner. Recently, I went to Flea Street. I got the Dungeness Crab Gnocchi, Fresh Pasta Carbonara, Which Came First: The Chicken or the Egg, Slow Braised Grass-Fed Short Rib, and Lavender Lemonade. The crab in the crab gnocchi had a delicate texture and the dish came with enough crab and sauce for each bite of gnocchi. The carbonara was delicious because the sauce was creamy and it was served with pork belly that they cured in-house. Next was the lavender lemonade. The lavender is a bit strong, but does not overpower the lemonade. By the way, they served biscuits while we waited for our mains and they were good, but the butter was amazing. It had a swirly appearance that looked so beautiful that you wouldn't want to break it. The short rib is good: the meat was tender and the potatoes were well cooked, crispy on the outside and pillow soft on the inside. This place is def on the top of our list of restaurants. Pricey, but the quality of food is great. We had a reservation at 5:45pm on a Saturday evening and it wasn't too busy when we arrived; however, that quickly changed as the night progressed. We appreciated the lady at the front on her attempt to get us an outdoor table, but after a "no" then "yes" then "no" again, we ended up w/ just keeping our table inside. The distance of each table was perfect, as that allows privacy for each table. Based on our experience, some places, esp for tables of two's are arranged so closely together that at some point, it just becomes awkward to hear other ppl's conversation and vice versa. FYI, we sat just right behind the main entrance door, next to the glass window and close to the kitchen (which wasn't loud at all). Our waiter was extremely friendly, polite, attentive, and knowledgeable. We had ordered a couple of appetizers and entrees and shared a dessert, all of which were perfectly seasoned (less if anything) and Michelin plated. For appetizers, we ordered: McFarland Smoked Trout (a bit basic) and Grass Fed Steak Tartar. For entrees, we ordered: House Made Ricotta Chive Gnocchi (delicious w/o it being overpowering. One of the best dishes I've had), and Pasture Raised Bone-In Pork Chop (similar to something at Selby's and this was by far way better, hands down). For dessert, we ordered: Just Peachy. I don't even know what to say about this. It tastes just as good as it looks. Get it if you can. We also had an opportunity to chat w/ the owner and that was a nice addition to our dinner. Honestly, it kinda reminds me of chef Ramsey a little bit. It shows a lot about their character and their love/passion for the food they create and the restaurant they share w/ people. TLDR extremely expensive for the food so don't go unless someone else is paying. I came here to meet a new friend and I believe based on location and the price the clienteles are mostly VCs. The restaurant is very unassuming in a tiny strip mall that's almost like a small office building that some boutique VC firms would choose. I didn't even find the restaurant name so I had to rely on address to make sure I'm at the right place. The interior is much more welcoming and service is good. Btw they already baked in the service charge/tip at 20% in the check so don't add more at the tip line at the check (I think that's super annoying they don't make it more clear on the check). The food is ridiculously expensive. I don't know why they name the restaurant flea street when they charge so much. A tomato soup is over $25 and a vegetarian option entree is over $40. It's not the price per se but what you get for the price. The other options are even more expensive at some over $70 (if it were like aged steak or something then the price might be justified but nope). Anyways I think the food is way overpriced and I didn't even care to take pictures of the entree and that's probably telling. Btw nope the vegetarian food is very under welcoming and I only ordered it because nothing else looked appetizing and the guy paying is vegetarian. Having just dined at Chez Panisse, I had a baseline for what "fine dining" was supposed to be. Let me tell ya, Flea St really knocked it out of the park. My dining companions and I all agree that our experience at Flea St really outshined CP. From the dishes to the service, everything was really top shelf. The 4 of us ordered: Starters: As Kneaded Toast of the Moment Goodness, this was amazing. The combination of the blue cheese, herbs, and figs and lightly toasted bread, it was perfect. Peach and Heirloom Salad Just a summery, savory and sweet, herbaceous yet rich salad. Mains: Corn to be Wild Risotto Ricotta Chive Gnocchi Slow Roasted Short Rib Halibut Cheek Picatta Of the mains, the stand out was the gnocchi. It was the best gnocchi I've ever had, anywhere. At our table we'd collectively travelled extensively, both domestically and internationally, so that's our basis for comparison. The weakest dish was the halibut. It's been about 25+ years since I last visited Flea Street and happy to make a return visit. Food is delicious and always changing based on the season and highlighting local products. When you dine at Flea Street you taste the freshness of each ingredient and how well they complement each component. :: Brussel sprouts - crispy, with pomegranate, butternut squash and creaminess from the pecorino - probably one of the best I've had at a restaurant. :: Risotto - creamy rich, flavorful with parsnip and Parmesan ($39) - delicious and decadent...and a bit extravagant with no protein :: Miso Black Cod - perfectly cooked, flaky, with a light miso broth. :: Date Cake - when received it was a bit laughable as it was literally a small, ramekin-sized cake cut in half and presented on the plate. Flea Street is such a warm and inviting restaurant with amazing food that I would describe as Farm to Table Californian. They have ample vegetarian options also. Bryan said they are updating their dessert menu. They change up their menu to include seasonal item as that are locally sourced. This is a great date place, especially when on a date with my friends and family. Big bonus points for a sophisticated and inclusive non alcoholic drink menu. As a non drinker I appreciate this so much. The service is impeccable and reminds me of Las Vegas in that one never needs to ask for a drink to be filled, or a plate to be cleared. Amazing service from Ciara and Sergio. The food was absolutely delicious. From the moment we walked in, the hostess was incredibly kind and helpful. Our drinks came out quickly and were smooth. The biscuits and bread that is brought to the table with butter squiggles and fig jam were a wonderful way to start the night. The toast of the day was surprising delightful. Surprising because I don't believe we have ever had frozen shaved tomato but it worked so well with the oil oiled bread and burrata. We could have eaten 10 of these. I had the vegetarian tasting plate and my husband had the short ribs. Mine was so much food I couldn't even finish but vegetables never tasted so good. I tried some of the short rib and it was wonderfully seasoned and perfectly cooked, The pumpkin spice martini was delightful and the little raspberry muffins given with the check were the perfect finish to the night. My husband took me here for dinner on a date night since it is Michelin plated. The restaurant seems like it's in a old house. At least where we sat, it's a quieter restaurant since the dining table spread out in the different rooms of the house. Probably not a great spot for something like a first date where you might want more commotion around you. The crowd is more mature... I was in bit of a sticker shock by the wine by the glass menu, since everything was over 20, but the wine I got (picked the cheapest!), was really a beautiful red that I really enjoyed. Service was absolutely wonderful- definitely on par with other high end restaurants in the area. It was nice that the owner also stopped by to say hi. They start you off with complimentary biscuits and bread that come with ribboned sheets of butter. We had the grilled Jimmy Nardello. I would've thought it was named after someone at the restaurant, but it's a type of red pepper. I'm not a huge red pepper fan, but these were really cooked and flavored to perfection with pine nuts, feta and garlic and went really great on bread. Pacific coast catch was a nice lightly battered fish, presented on a tomato based sauce and whipped potato. We ended the meal with the Peach Cobbler, which was made to order. I'm not a huge fruit- based dessert fan, but the freshly based crust was amazing with the ice cream. Overall, excellent service, delicious food. An upscale restaurant located near Stanford University. When you walk in, it feels like you're inside a family home with cool artwork on the walls. Very romantic and intimate ambiance! We started the night with delicious bread and biscuits served with potatoes and butter. The biscuits were soft and tasty, but the bread was ordinary. The braised short ribs were well-seasoned! I've known about the Flea Street Cafe in Menlo Park for 40 years or so, but last night was the first time I went there. We invited a couple of friends to join us to celebrate my wife's birthday. The restaurant has a really nice ambiance inside. We were seated at a 4-person table overlooking the front of the restaurant. We started by ordering drinks. We had read that Joan Baez is a frequent diner and likes Lavender Lemon Drop, so two of us had that, and my friend and I had the aged Manhattan. Both drinks were great. I especially liked the attention to detail in how the Lemon Drops were served with a refill amount in a small bottle of chilled ice. We started with a garden salad and Brussels Sprouts; two had salmon, my wife had the vegetarian-tasting plate, and one person had the braised short ribs. Overall, all of the food was fantastic. We appreciate the excellent service we had from our waiter. Overall, it was a delightful evening. The place was expensive, and I knew they put a 20% service charge on every bill. My love interest made reservations for this hidden gem. Conveniently they have a decent sized parking lot which comes in handy because this place can fill up quick. We opted to dine outside on the deck area with plenty of heaters and pillows to make you as comfortable as possible outdoors. We looked around inside for a few minutes and I can tell you that we were just in the mood for outdoor dining because the inside was very sleek, clean and impressive to dine in as well. We started with some crunchy pink shrimp that came with some sauce at the bottom of the bowl and lemon slices. All mixed together is everything you didn't know you needed but glad you had. The bread and ribbon looking butter is a good addition to your meal if not by itself just to snack on. I had a sour beer and I was very pleased by it along with the lavender lemon drop that seemed to be at every table. They clearly know what they're doing behind the bar. We both almost ordered the black cod but I decided I'd try more on the menu for a full assessment. The cod was too legit all the way through with everything on the dish. My scallops however left me scratching my head. It says yams and Brussel sprouts so I assumed I'd have a decent amount of sides to eat but I was sadly mistaken.. no worries, as I asked our very helpful and attentive waiter who asked the kitchen if I can get a side of rice out asap even though they don't normally do sides a la carte. The rice came out in less than 2 minutes and my dish was complete and satisfying. Now that's what I call service! Although there were only 2 people in our party, they automatically give 20% tip to the waiters but I felt the need to show my appreciation for my waiter and gave him a good amount on top of that. I recently crossed this restaurant off my bucket-list as part of a graduation dinner. Lovely ambiance - especially our outside booth, attentive service, and delicious and creative drinks. I love how their menu is built around the seasonality and strengths of local farms, which they list by name on the menu. I ordered the house negroni, which was solid. For an appetizer, I went with Yelp's recommendation of the smoked trout - thank you all, this was the right move. The basket of bread and biscuits with fancy butter was a delight. I went with the vegetarian sampler - a four item set of heirloom beans with pesto, an asparagus risotto, a gnocchi with morels and peas (this was the BEST dish of the night!), and a carrot tartlet with fava puree (close contender for favorite). We were stuffed but split a dessert anyway - it's strawberry season so the strawberry lavender shortcake was the clear choice. They also brought a plate of fresh, warm cookies with the check - which I actually still have in a take home box to try later today (like I said, we were FULL full even before the shortcake). The star of the night was the pork chop served over a delicate and delicious bed of risotto. The rock fish with saffron sauce was to die for. The drinks were amazing and had a beautiful presentation. Service was exceptional as ever. Our servers, Angel, José, Alonso, Cristy, Julio and Eloy were very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Ashamed to say that this is the first time I have eaten at Flea St., even though it's been here since 1980 and I grew up in the area. On the pricey side, but WELL worth it. All, and I mean ALL of the offerings are fresh crafted deliciousness! The cocktails, bread plate, the first course, entrees, wine list and desserts are unique and varied enough to please any palette. Wonderful!!! A lovely restaurant with fantastic service. Went here this evening and I was impressed!! I loved the fact that they offered a gluten free bread appetizer - it was delicious and it was a treat to have a bread that didn't feel like a substitute. The smoked trout salad was yummy. The mushroom risotto was wholesome and full of flavor. The chocolate torte was rich and creamy. I asked my husband how we had lived in the area so long and not been here for dinner! Great little spot in Meno Park. Very sustainable and everything is locally sourced, and you can taste it. Drinks were good, the Pinot noir Juice especially. The food was properly seasoned, and cooked to perfection. Highlights include: House made butter milk biscuits- tender and full of flavor, make sure you add a pinch of the sea salt to the butter and pile on the fig jam! Lamb chop - definitely a must order. Gnocchi - delightfully light and fluffy Salmon - specifically the cream less creamed corn, the corn was a revelation and my new favorite way to have corn. Short ribs- braised beautifully, and very flavorful. Ricotta pumpkin cheesecake- absolutely delicious The only slight hiccup was two of our dishes were served without silverware. Other than that, service was great, very friendly and helpful. We got a chance to speak to Bryan, the chef and he was gracious enough to go over the restaurant's ethos and how they source their product. Very cozy place, we will definitely be back! read more

Loved the cozy local vibes at this restaurant! The staff were very friendly and attentive the whole time too. The free biscuits for appetizers were divine. Spread some ribbon butter and sprinkle a little bit of salt and it's perfection. I wanted to ask for more but was too shy lol. We ordered the rack of lamb as an appetizer - we thought it would be too small but it was just the perfect size given its richness. It was amazing. For entrees, we ordered the short ribs and risotto. The short ribs melts in your mouth and was very tasty. The risotto was almost too rich for my taste. To be honest it was not my favorite because of the earthy flavors but it was still good. We came here without a reservation on a Tuesday night. My party of four was seated promptly and at a lovely inside table. The table was set with the most quirky and cute tableware. I adored the green glasses, and the mis matched plates were adorable. The restaurant brought out some of their famous buns (bread) with curled butter. What a treat! Everyone thought they were amazing. We all ordered the same thing - the vegetarian sampler. Are we vegetarians? No. Did we want to pick our plates? Yes! Absolutely every bite was scrumptious. Over-priced considering the service. The wait staff is very young. For such an expensive meal, I expected seasoned professionals to staff the dining room. The servers were very stiff and somewhat awkward. I felt like I was in a culinary school, not a high-end establishment. The cursory birthday wishes felt forced and disingenuous. They clearly had a pre-printed menu for such an occasion and brought it out without a smile or even a nod. Most of the servers avoided looking at us. It was a little off-putting. It took me a good 30 minutes to completely relax after arriving. It just didn't feel very welcoming, although the hostess did her best. It didn't help that the first words our server said were, "The chef needs you to order everything at once." I didn't realize we were there to please the chef--and that's what it felt like based on the content and delivery of that message. Overall, I would say don't go there. It was not worth the high price, and wasn't nearly as enjoyable as I had hoped. read more

After a long flight from Portugal, I decided to go for a nice dinner. Upon arrival at Flea Street Cafe, I found what I was looking for. A charming restaurant with a cozy bar and welcoming staff. The food was superb and the presentation, a feast for the eyes and soul. The service timing, exemplary. Fine dining done right . I am only here a short time but will make sure to visit again. One of the best dining experiences ever. We sampled several starters which were ample and delicious. We split the salad, a wedge with a perfectly balance vinaigrette that had hints of fennel plus bacon, blue cheese, and egg. We split the main, wild salmon deep fried but not greasy at all and slightly rare. The Merry Edwards Pinot Noir called me back for a second glass. A small band treated us to hits from Dylan, The Birds, and Leonard Cohen, all freshly interpreted. The owner and founder greeted us as did other lovely guests.
