This is a must stop on the way to McCall or if you're in the area. Many of their pastries have a huckleberry option. We got a huckleberry bar, chocolate bar, hot chocolate, and huckleberry mocha. The pastries were the lightest I've had in a long time. The frosting was perfectly light as well. I was surprised my mocha had real pieces of huckleberry in it! That tells you how fresh ingredients are! Staff was friendly and the interior was very inviting. There is not much room so if there is a line, be patient. I've raved about Flight of Fancy once ago, and here I am years later doing so again. You can't go wrong here, whether it's sweet or savory your taste buds are craving. I visited the bakery twice during my weekend in Donnelly. On the first day, my husband and I shared a breakfast burrito (scrambled eggs, sausage, salsa, hash browns, dried, cheese, wrapped with a wheat tortilla, $7.00), a cream cheese lemon muffin ($3.00) and a huckleberry donut ($2.00). The burrito was delicious. It was generously packed with all the goods and served at the perfect temperature. Full of flavor, I didn't even need any hot sauce. The muffin was rich, baked with a yummy ball of cream cheese in the middle. You'll want a big glass of milk to go with this one. The huckleberry donut was absolutely out-of-this-world. The frosting was wonderfully creamy and bursting with flavors of fresh, Idaho huckleberry. If you're a tourist, this is a MUST TRY. On day two, my husband ordered another burrito because he was so impressed with the first. I went for the breakfast sandwich ($7.00) which was unlike any I had ever had before. It's a thick slice of delicious, homemade frittata (eggs, cheese, green chiles, salsa, sour cream, dried onion and flour ) with cheddar cheese between two slices of focaccia. I can't say enough good things about it. Each bite was phenomenal. The frittata was incredibly well seasoned as was the focaccia. I will be returning for this sandwich and more sweet treats. Great little bakery- we always stop here when traveling through or staying in town. Ladies who work here are hard working and very friendly. Great inside or outside seating areas. They always have a selection of huckleberry items. Everything from quiche, donuts, danishes, pound cake, coffees, even cakes and pies to custom order. Such. Good. Fresh. Pastries! Very relieved to find this bakery in Donnelly, as it's the only place in town with an espresso machine. We arrived at 7:45am to find freshly baked muffins coming out of the oven and fresh coffee being brewed. All things huckleberry are fantastic, but the lemon curd muffin is also excellent. When ordering espresso drinks, keep in mind they only use one shot regardless of drink size, so be sure to specify # of shots when ordering. While we love stopping at Flight of Fancy on our way through Donelly, we have been very frustrated that they seem to rarely be open. We left Boise by 10 so that we could intentionally stop there for lunch. According to Google, they opened at 9:00 on Friday. Nope, they were closed. Flight of Fancy has the best maple bars in all of Valley County. The only time I've had a better maple bar was the last time I visited Vermont. After my third experience here, it is going down in the books as the "Fight or Flight" cafe. From now on, I will choose flight instead of fight with the ladies who work there. Their homemade goods are extremely sweet, but their service certainly taints it. I walked in this morning for some coffee and to treat my grandparents to some baked items (who live down the street) and brought my three year old daughter. After reading the options, my daughter chose a chocolate donut with sprinkles. This experience waned as the older woman made an offhand comment while I was ordering,"that's enough donuts," that I ignored and continued to order. They seemed annoyed to answer my inquiries for recommendations, and the older woman was having difficulty understanding our order, so the younger woman making our coffee repeated it loud and clear in an irritated tone. After tipping them and walking out, I noticed they gave me a different donut instead. It wouldn't have been an issue, but any parent knows it can be to a three-year old. So, I returned and said "No problem, I'd like to buy the chocolate one with sprinkles" that my daughter ordered (instead of attempting to return the one that was already bagged). The young lady took my money, looked at me and stated: "IT PAYS TO ORDER MORE CLEARLY." I walked out feeling like I was left with a bag full of bittersweet baked goods and a slap in the face. If I were to go back, it would be remove the tip I left. When I told my husband about this interaction, he made me vow to never buy from them again. It is too bad, because it is conveniently located, has fresh food and an inviting garden. I wonder how long they can go on treating people like this. We stopped here sort of out of necessity on the way back from Jug Mountain Ranch on our way for a soak in Gold Fork Hot Springs - we'd heard they had good grab and go options and needed a quick bite. What a cool place! If it's not apparent, Flight of Fancy is an ode to aviation - the decor is dedicated to pilots and there's even a cool bomber jacket hanging by the door when you enter. They have samples of their huckleberry loaf (definitely try some baked goods!) and I am sad we didn't have more time to hang out. They have an extensive menu, and I would like to try more of it when we are in town. Since we were short on time, we both got panini sandwiches to go, and they may have been the best panini I have ever had. They use homemade sourdough, and as any sando aficionado can tell you, the bread makes a BIG difference. What a cute spot! Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. read more

WOW! Do yourself a favor and stop by this place when in Donnelly or even just passing through. In the Summer, the outside yard and porch around the house is blooming with tons of greenery, plants, veggies, and even fruit! It's like sitting in a Garden while you enjoy your amazing coffee and pastries. I came in with my family (we are black) and you can tell the main counter lady did not like our service, she answered all of our questions with whispers and side eye, slammed down milk containers, pitchers and cups between every order. STOP. Park your car. And walk into this little gem. You won't be disappointed. First off, the rating on this place does not do it justice what so ever. We stopped in on our way home from McCall with the intentions of just getting a cup of coffee. Well...long story short we left with more than just a great cup of coffee. Maybe it was the smell of handmade Croissants being baked in the oven or the 'still warm' huckleberry or other various options of muffins that roped us in. My husband ordered one of their breakfast sandwiches while I opted for a Huckelberry muffin (and in a moment of weakness one of their freshly baked croissants) to go with my Latte. Coffee was on point and the pastries were nothing short of amazing. Everything is HOMEMADE, from scratch and made with love. Service was awesome and so friendly. The owner bakes everything herself and clearly loves what she does- so stop in and say hi. From this point on, our new tradition will be to stop here every time we come to McCall. Naughty Cakes. The name just begs you to buy them and when you see that more than ample swirl of frosting rising high above what looks like a cupcake, you know you will like it. Although the cake is similar in shape to a cupcake, there is a difference in quality. These babies aren't hastily mixed up and thrown in a paper cup. The consistency is dense and moist and the flavor is richer than Daddy Warbucks. They usually have a Chardonnay cake with a white frosting and a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting (by usually, I mean before they sell out--you might want to call ahead). My favorite is the Chardonnay but the chocolate is fantastic too. Once, during the Donnelly Huckleberry festival (I think its usually in August), I had the great fortune to try their Chardonnay Naughty Cake with a sweet addition of huckleberries. But, it is all about the frosting in my mind. There is enough to get your fill and just shy of overkill. Just the way I like it. Their cinnamon rolls are outstanding as are their other assorted pastries and cookies (hint: try anything with huckleberry. Actually, just try everything). They just might have the best bran muffin I've ever tasted. Of course, they have various coffee concoctions if you are so inclined. Did I mention they also have the best chocolate chip cookies I have ever had? If you are lucky enough to catch them coming out of the oven, do not pass them by. The owners are there during the normal business hours and are a riot. They are so nice and truly funny. It is a great experience ordering something (read Naughty Cakes) here because they always have something to say. It is a small space but they have a few tables and it is definitely cozy. You can order their cheesecake online (haven't tried it but I am confident that they would be outstanding) at dessertjunkies.com and you may be able to convince them to ship some Naughty Cakes, but do try to go there if you are in, say, a 500 mile radius (that would include Boise, BTW). read more

Very disappointed. While staying outside of Donnelly I was hoping to come to town on a Saturday morning to get a little homework done for an online class and get a great coffee and treat. Coffee was fine and so was the huckleberry coconut bar but I won't ever come here again after seeing how the gal there (assuming an owner) treated her customers. She was not pleasant to us and we went to sit down I was hoping to plug in my laptop and get set up for work. Meanwhile, some girls came in to order and stated what they wanted and she corrected their order and told them what they were ordering in barista terminology. A gentleman walked in shortly after and asked about the restroom and she started saying where it was and as he began moving that way she sternly scolded him saying "you need to listen to what I'm saying". Finally, we asked for the wifi and she kept asking if we would be there long. She gave us the password and told us the rules were no plugging in anything. At this point we were the only people inside but she told us where we had to sit or else insisted "the wifi works great outside". I ordered cupcakes for my son's birthday and asked if they could be delivered to his school. Susan was extraordinarily helpful - she arranged for the delivery of the cupcakes and even called the school to ensure that they would be delivered at a convenient time. When I asked my son, he volunteered that the cupcakes were "really good!!!" - which is quite the compliment! I couldn't have been more delighted with the service and response - and with the results. Skip this place. A baked item is not worth being visibly hated. Some of the rudest customer service I've ever experienced. Not only does she have a sign on the door as you enter and another at the cash register telling customers that if they are not polite and patient they should not come in (to be honest, I thought the signs were funny before I met who I think is the owner or the baker or both), but the woman behind the counter was confrontational and flat-out rude. Now, I gave her the benefit of the doubt at first as I'm sure Donnelly has seen its fair share of impolite and impatient tourists but I was judged as being one of these people just for walking in her door. I have stopped here 3 times in the last 2 years and each time the customer service was awful and the women very unwelcoming. I spend a lot of time in Donnelley and sometimes need to use wifi to send an email for work. Each time they have told me not to take up a table if using internet and each time there were open tables. I have watched the owners set their own laptop up on table and walk away. Yesterday I witnessed them telling another customer that kids could only come in if they were quiet. We were treated unkindly and was asked to keep our meeting short to keep from tying up the table even though we purchased beverages and were the only patrons in the building. We have a cabin outside of Donnelly and come up for a few weeks each summer. Flight of Fancy is a true rare gem in this small mountain community. The quality of the desserts and baked good is amazing--such a refreshing change from the mass produced bakery chains like Panera in Southern California. True, they often have small inventory or are sold out of some items; however, that is just the trade off for having extremely fresh goods in a town with a population of 139!
