    Maduro Old Fashioned

Newest kid on the South Miami block Flight West shines with exceptional service, creative cocktails, and inspired takes on classic menu favorites. While we definitely have had some great dining staples and short term spots, I've never considered South Miami to be a foodie destination. The latest crop of restaurants in the area are rapidly challenging that assertion. Situated next door to Italian rockstar Mano Libera, Flight West has some big shoes to fill in its culinary endeavors with its prime corner location. They're still in their soft opening phase, but have quickly found their footing with their eclectic menu focused on global ingredients with a fusion flare. Our server Savannah (sp) was very sweet along with another server who never hesitated if something was needed. The attention paid to cocktails, presentation, and service was appreciated, and it's a detail I hope the restaurant maintains as they become further established. My husband started with the signature Maduro Old Fashioned, which packed too strong of a punch for my palette, but he loved. The branded ice cube and plantain chip garnish was a fun touch. I wanted something low abv, and asked for a dressed up club soda with St. Germain, cucumber, and lemon, and it was perfection in a wine glass and the perfect refreshing sip. Next time I'll take one of their signature cocktails for a spin. Quite a few of the appetizers were calling my name, but we decided on the calamari. It was well seasoned with the jalapeño aioli, lime zest, and pickled radishes offering a nice brightness to offset the fried squid. We really enjoyed this dish. For entree I had the garlic & herb mussels. They're noted to be served in a citrus herb broth, which if I'm being honest didn't seem like an accurate description. I was expecting something much lighter and herbaceous, but instead the sauce was a sweet umami flavor bomb with surprising smokey notes. They were absolutely delicious! I'm not sure if they changed the recipe post menu, but it was a very pleasant surprise, and I highly recommend trying them. My husband opted for the Madagascar prawns. This is definitely a show stopper on the plate, being one of their largest dishes on the menu, but not my personal favorite (particularly at the price point). The grilled Madagascar shrimp are on a California king size bed of rice bathed in coconut milk and slathered with a Thai inspired tangy coconut curry. The flavors worked really well together but there's only so much rice once can eat, and the two of us struggled to even make a dent. I think lightening the carb load with some sauteed spinach, sugar snaps, or broccolini on the plate would bring some balance. I think also a price point in the $50s may be a little less painful for what is essentially two very large shrimp. While it was very tasty, out of the three dishes we got this is probably the only one we wouldn't repeat in the future. Overall we really enjoyed Flight West and are excited to see more restaurants of their caliber in our cute little neck of the swamp. It's been a long time since a restaurant really rocked my tastebuds so we will definitely be back!

Food is secondary at this new trendy spot in SoMi. Drinks are delish! Definitely worth checking out for happy hour! Service at the bar is 5 stars!

Susy and I went for date night and the experience was amazing. The martini presentation was special. See photo. We had the grilled octopus and the branzino. Both were among the best we have ever had. The chef and kitchen staff really know their craft. À++. Service was great too. For sure we will be back. One word of warning. The À/C is blasting and Susy was freezing during dinner. I was fine but I suggest ladies bring a wrap.

From the moment we sat down, the guy looked annoyed that we were there. Zero greeting, zero eye contact. We waited almost 10 minutes just to get acknowledged while he was chatting with another customers at the other end of the bar. When he finally took our order, he barely listened. I asked for a classic Old Fashioned and he brought me something that tasted like watered-down whiskey with too much bitters and a random orange slice thrown in. My friend's whiskey sour was unbalanced -- definitely not worth the $18 price tag. I politely mentioned to recommend us another drinks options he just shrugged and said "we don't have that" Not offer another choice or an apology. The drinks were mediocre at best, but his attitude made it worse. He ignored us most of the night and acted annoyed every time we ordered. Zero professionalism. The place has a great vibe but with service like this, is not worth to spend almost $200 dollars there for few drinks. I don't remember his name but he was tall, Latin and maybe from Colombia. We just wanted to report his behavior to management but in a Saturday's night you just don't want to ruined more. Next.

So, let's get into it: I don't know about you, but the one thing I do not enjoy doing is driving and circling around, being lost, just to find an establishment. So, I love that this restaurant is so easy to find with good signage, lots of nearby parking, both street and lots. Anywho, once I parked, the manager Judd was so friendly and kind and directed me to the table where my friend was seated. He overheard that I was kind of speaking loud over the music when I barely had a voice due to losing it from another event, so he kindly turned down the music for us. Once there, service was quick and attentive. I got a Fresh Paloma for my drink and the Seared Salmon for dinner. The drink was a good size and tasted good, no complaints there. As for the dinner, WOW. This was delicious, I would get this again. The flavors were there and the portions were just perfect (not too much and not too little, I usually never get enough or leave with leftovers). Also, not overpriced for Miami in my opinion. Aside from that, I did try some of my friend's off-menu pasta and it was really yummy. Furthermore, they have great weekly specials: (Note, subject to change. Please check Instagram or call for Current Week): Tuesday: Burgers and Bottles, $10 Burgers and Half off Select Bottles of Wine Wednesday: Double Loyalty Points and Fire, Flour & Fizz ($12 Pizzas, $12 Aperol Spritz, $7 Prosecco, 5pm-close) Thursday Ladies Night: Complimentary Bubbly for Ladies 4pm-7pm Sunday: 10am-4pm Bloody Mary Bar Go check it out, I don't think you'll regret it. Everything was phenomenal, and our server, Catty, was wonderful. The crudo, croquettes, and beef tartare were absolute standouts--wow. The porterhouse was cooked to perfection, and every single side was incredible. You have to try the French onion mashed potatoes and the Brussels sprouts. We somehow still made room for dessert, and it was amazing too, even though we were sooo full. We had plenty of leftovers to take home! From the food to the service, everything was exceptional. Definitely Michelin-worthy in my opinion. Can't wait to come back!

We were sat immediately and they had a printed sign with our name on it on our table. That was a nice touch. The service was VERY slow! We waited at least 10 minutes before the waiter (Danny/Daniel) ever came over to offer us water. Another 20 minutes later and we still hadn't ordered our food. My friend's iced tea still hadn't arrived. I had to go to the hostess stand and tell them that we'd been there for half an hour and hadn't even ordered yet. We never even saw our waiter during that time. Eventually a manager came over and took our order. I ordered the Hamachi Crudo as my appetizer and the salmon as my entree, and the blueberry lemon cheesecake for my dessert. My friend ordered the same thing, except the cookie as her dessert. My other friend ordered the Cesar salad as her appetizer and the Beauty chicken sando as her entree. The Hamachi was absolutely delicious (but incredibly small). The Cesar salad was HUGE! It was almost 2:30 by the time we got our entrees (1.5 hours after arriving). Our salmons were barely warm, meaning that they had been ready for a while, but they had been left sitting in the kitchen. We had arrived pretty hungry, and since our appetizer was only 3-4 bites, and it'd already been an hour and a half, we weren't about to send our food back to be heated up. The salmon, although not hot, was good. I liked the sauce it came in. It was a little over cooked on the outside. But, overall and well made, tasty dish. My friend liked her chicken sandwich. It came with about 2-4 big "fries". Upon using the ladies room, I discovered that the hand dryer was not working. It was 3pm (2 hours later) when we received our desserts. We had to add more time to the parking meter. The waiter informed us that he couldn't offer us any coffee as the machine was being serviced. The restaurant looks nice. The chairs are comfortable. It's nicely decorated. The music was great- mostly 80's music. All in all, we were pretty disappointed in our experience. As a Michelin Guide restaurant, we expected more. Better/faster service, for sure! A working coffee machine. Hot food. I'm glad I came for Miami Spice. I probably won't be returning. If I do return I'll ask for a different waiter.
