This place had been on my list of Places to Try for a while, but I didn't know I'd like it this much! It's in the corner of a little center near the Galleria. I had to make a U-turn to get into the parking lot because I was going westbound and I didn't see the sign at all until I was already turning into the place. I was there to meet up with a friend of mine that I hadn't seen in a while. She ended not being able to make it due to a work emergency, but I waited there for about 40 minutes when we both were still hopeful she could make it. I got in at around 11 AM on a Sunday morning. The tables were mostly filled and there was a steady stream of customers coming and going; some to stay and others had ordered something to-go (they came in cake boxes but weren't open so I sadly didn't get to see what they had ordered). It's a cute little place with plenty of tables inside and out. There are shelves with various imported items that you could purchase like Nutella (not sure if that's imported, though) and jam as well as olives. There is also an open counter display with their crepe station and savory items like quiches and sandwiches (closest to the doors) all the way to the pastries by the cash register. The spread looks amazing! In the back are some baskets with these long baguettes that made my inner self battle between the desire to play Swords with them or just devour them like the carb-loving fiend I am. While waiting, I decided to ask the Crepe lady behind the counter what I could eat. I'm vegetarian (easy enough) but I don't eat onion, garlic, leeks, or chives (that's the hard part). There are menus by the door but the menus don't tell you everything. Plus, there seems to be specials - there was a Brie and Fig Sandwich that was offered when I was there but was not listed on the menu - so the menu was just for their staple menu items. The lady referred me to another man who referred me to the Chef (1/2 of the owners). He seemed nice? Well, the French aren't known to be as foolishly smile-prone like most Americans appear to be, so I'm sure he was all smiles inside. Anyway, I explained my dietary restrictions and with a moment of thought, he told me I could eat there. I didn't think that was all that helpful, but I took it.. and decided to play it safe. Once it was confirmed that my friend probably couldn't join, I finally got in line. You order at the cash register and the lady (the Chef's wife, I'm guessing) got the things you wanted if they were ready, like the croissants and pastries! I ended up getting the Four Cheese Crepe which came with a simple side salad as well as a water. There is a self-service station off to the side. Because I had been salivating over their goodies for so long, I also ended up getting an Almond Croissant, and 3 other pastries to-go. I just randomly picked the pastries, but one of them was coffee-esque in cream puff form, the other was labeled with Chocolate Pistachio, and the last one was nameless. One thing to note here: the crepes are not made to order. That's not to say they aren't fresh - just efficient. The crepe lady would pre-make a set amount of crepes and the Chef would put them together. Once he was almost done with the stack of pre-made crepes, the lady would make more. I didn't taste anything other than awesome crepe skin - light and the edges were still slightly crispy. No complaints! The filling was amazing - it was cheesy and I. Love. Cheese. There's really nothing that could go wrong. The side salad was fresh (nothing wilted) and the dressing used was light and was more of a simple vinaigrette. I didn't detect any garlic or onion in any form. I was ecstatic, because though amazing, the crepe was essentially melted fat folded in a thin carb skin. The staff there was used to me loitering about and was nevertheless helpful; they had even told me I could sit down when I informed them I was waiting for a friend. When I finished, my plates were cleared almost immediately to get it out of my way (I had whipped out my phone to respond to my friend who was still stuck at work). I shared the croissant with my husband shortly after I returned home later that day. It was still great and the thing is HUGE. It was pretty much the same diameter as my appetizer plate and was lightly topped with sliced almonds and had a great almond filling that reached almost one end to the other! The pastries were shared later that night with 4 others. Everything was amazing, but just a note of warning: the Chocolate Pistachio comes with rum-soaked cherries dispersed in the middle. They did NOT skimp on the rum. Just saying. All in all: good service, great food, and the seating/atmosphere is clean and open. I returned the next weekend for a "light" breakfast with my sister and brother in law at 9 AM: Almond Croissant, Pain au Chocolat, and a Chocolate Croissant. Don't judge it from the outside, where it is crammed into a small corner of this huge L shaped shopping center, and parking is frustrating...please don't judge it until you step inside and try some of their great food! Decent brunch option in H town. Not crowded on a Sunday morning. Parking was easy. We got the almond croissant. It was not the kind of flanky but more on the soggy end. I don't mind having a soggy croissant as long as the flavor is there. But if you are a fan of flanky croissant, this might not be your type. We also got the Kyle salad. It was refreshing. I can compare this place to Common Bond... But common bond is in a better location. This place is kinda hidden. The decorations are nice and reminds me of how a small bakery/market would look like in Paris.. They have seasonings and such you can buy. Almond croissant (5/5): this isn't your regular almond croissant.. It has a name but I forgot, but it's so moist and delicious! Love almond croissants so get this if u do as well! All sandwiches come with a side of salad which seemed to be dressed in light oil and house made chips. Roast beef sandwich $12.50 (5/5): horseradish mayo is sooooooo bomb so it def made this sandwich a memorable one for my bf and I.. I didn't really like my grilled chicken sandwich so I was eating off his. The bread is amazing. Probably will get this next time! Flo Paris, yay for being open on Dimanche (Sunday). My favorite standard -- French Riviera -- is not. This is a cute alternative just up the street on the corner of Chimney Rock and Westheimer and tucked into a little corner. Despite that the seating is relatively spacious inside. Were it not flooding for the second weekend in a row, I'm sure patio seating would have been out, too. I came here for croissants, and I have notoriously picky friends. I didn't look terribly hard on my first visit, but all croissant varietals were $4: regular, almond, chocolate, pain au chocolat, avec fromage... They also had French baguettes that you could take to-go, but no sourdough. (I'm still looking for a bakery that sells these...) All-in-all it was a very nice place that I'd be likely to go to again. I came here for breakfast on a weekday and there wasn't a crowd. I was greeted by a nice young man (wish I had asked his name) and he was very nice and helpful as well as the young lady at the cashier. I am so glad I found this bakery/cafe it is real treat! The aroma of fresh pastries hit me as soon as I walked into the door. I ordered 2 breakfast items as well as a side of bacon and 3 different pastries. My order came out to $43 which isn't bad at all! My croissant benedict with spinach and salmon was delicious! The croissant was nice and flaky on the outside and soft and buttery on the inside. I don't even like croissants or eat them often but this was real yummy! I had the red velvet cake, Exotic passion fruit cake and a Strawberry Chantilly. At first, due to my lack of experience with French pastries, I felt unqualified to leave a review. Then, upon realizing that most of the existing reviews are left by female dessert enthusiasts, an idea popped into my head. Here's a review for the dudes who are not that into desserts but came because their wife/girlfriend/sister/daughter wanted to. Get the Salmon Sandwich. It's literally a giant piece of baguette with a large piece of salmon in the middle. It's pre-made and when you buy it, they press it down flat for you so it would fit into your mouth. It's huge and it's guaranteed to take a while to finish. Great way to pass time! =) But in all seriousness, the salmon sandwich was actually pretty good, thought it was quite expensive. I would also suggest trying one of their savory crepes. Their crepes are on the thicker side, which actually make the dish feel more like an entree instead of a dessert. Now for the desserts. We tried 3 of them but I honest have no idea what they are. They taste pretty good though, not overly sweet. The interior is very modern but seating is limited so be ready to wait for a table. FOOD POISONING I asked my husband to pick some items up from the French Riviera Bakery and he went to Flo Paris by mistake. The person at the counter must have realized his error, because he ordered things that aren't on their menu--mushroom quiche, ham and cheese croissant, fruit salad, a regular eclair. The clerk said nothing, but substituted quiche lorraine, skewered fruit and a chocolate filled eclair that seemed not quite freshly backed. I ate the food anyway and had barely finished when I had to run to the bathroom to throw up. The last time I threw up was too many years ago to even remember. I assume all this was accidental, nothing intentional on the part of the Flo Paris clerk who may have guessed he meant to go to their competition. Also, the location is in the corner of a strip mall. Despite the great Yelp reviews, I was skeptical. We were four. The coffee was weak and the lattes acceptable but nothing special. (I'm building up here.) The rest. So freakin' good. The French onion soup had the perfect proportion of melts cheese to bread to onion soup. It was just the right temperature, brothy vs greasiness, and sweet onion to savory soup. The baguette was perfect. Super crisp/hard crust and wonderfully yeasty with a bite inside. The pastries: fig tart. Just the right amount of fig in each bite, perfectly ripe. The tart was sturdy and buttery without being too crisp. The flourless chocolate cake was super super chocolaty but not too sweet to be inedible. The macaroon was delicious. Ok not perfect texturally but pretty darn close. Had such a wonderful meal. Randomly chose to eat at this place when I was in the area, I had high hopes for this place. Photos looked amazing, the desserts looked delicious when I walked in and it had fairly decent reviews. However, my experience was not that awesome and fabulous. If I were to compare it to any other restaurant I would say it is very similar to that of Jason's Deli, but more high end. The food is decent. Nothing super special even though it is very different from most places. But the flavors weren't "wow". I ordered the Salmon Tandori: the salmon was almost canned flaked salmon-like, dry, and rather "fishy"; not fresh. The sauteed mushrooms didn't feel sauteed. It actually tasted like it came out of a can. It didn't have that rich umami taste that sauteed mushrooms give off. The bread itself was good, but the filling itself was disappointing. The dressing and flavoring wasn't anything special as well. The meal comes with the house salad, which is just a simple 3 lettuce salad with balsamic dressing, and chips which from what I can tell, just comes out of a bag and not even house made. I also had one fruit tart, 2 macarons, and the creme brulee. I just want to express how disappointed I am about the desserts. They look amazing, but they taste...less amazing. My fruit tart, the filling was not rich at all, the fruit was nicely glazed, but the actual tart itself is where it loses a lot of points for me. The tart was definitely overly cooked; I was looking forward to a flaky-buttery tart crust, but it was so hard it was almost like taking a bite out of a stale cookie. Not enjoyable at all. The creme brulee had no vanilla flavors or aroma coming from it at all, no richness, not creamy, absolute garbage. As for the macarons, which I find it ridiculous because it is a french confectionery, was over priced and absolutely not worth your money. I apologize I didn't take any pictures of the desserts, but please believe me when I say that they macarons I purchased, the feet of the cookie didn't even form and it didn't rise at all which made the confectionery very dense and chewy to the point where it stuck to your teeth. The ganache for the chocolate one was decent, but the pistachio buttercream was almost too watery like eating flat whipped cream. Really perplexed by how quickly Flo Paris has gone downhill. The last time I was there I had their house smoked salmon which was sweet and amazing but this time, it didn't taste like it was house smoked but rather store bought. And to make matters worse they added pickles that were heavy on the vinegar which ruined the smoked salmon taste. The menu states the sandwich comes with cucumbers; yes, pickles are cucumbers, but there's a difference between fresh cucumbers (like they had last time and are supposed to have) and extremely acidic pickles that ruin a meal. If they were on the side that would have been great but they hide them in the sandwich and you don't realize they're in there until you take a bite. The other disappointing aspect of my meal this weekend was the bread. It's supposed to come on a fresh baguette but it came on a fluffy chewy bolillo. I go to Flo Paris for the baguettes not a bolillo I can get in the grocery store. I also had the cream of mushroom soup and that's exactly what it was: a can of mushrooms dumped into heavy cream. It wasn't terrible but cream of mushroom soup should be pureed mushrooms with cream, not cream with obvious canned mushrooms dumped in. I noticed they had a "Help Wanted" sign so perhaps whomever they lost was the glue that held this place together in the kitchen because the food is nothing like it was in June. I ordered a Orange Chocolate Mousse cake and a Vanilla Latte for a little over $10. The Vanilla Latte wasn't as sweet as others I've tried, which I personally liked. The mousse cake was amazing. The orange definitely balanced out the richness of the chocolate. Great variety of breads, sweets, lunch options, and crepes (both sweet and savory). Excited to come back and try the breakfast and lunch menus. The staff is incredibly nice, as is the decor. Clean, open, and plentiful seating. Since FLO Paris is in a giant shopping center, there is a lot more parking than other comparable places in Houston (we found great parking around noon on a Saturday). There are some busy restaurants in the same shopping center (i.e. Cafe Lili), so I'm not sure parking will be as easy to find later in the day. Plus, FLO has only been open a week as of today, so I'm sure there will be a lot more activity in the coming months. read more
