I had been here once prior to this visit and remembered it as being good, so I went ahead and encouraged my part of 6 to stop here for lunch. We had a descent wait until we were seated, but it was expected on a Saturday with a party of our size. Once we were seated and had ordered, it took over FORTY MINUTES to receive our food. About a minute before our meals arrived a male (who didn't introduce himself) said that he knew we had been waiting awhile and was "pushing the kitchen" to get our food out. I think he mumbled "sorry guys" as he walked away. Once we did get our food, which consisted of two fish sandwiches, a piece of blackened fish, a salad, and a shrimp po'boy (aka nothing complicated), everything was cold. One member of our party had ordered the homemade chips which were dark brown and burnt. The po'boy had maybe a total of four cold fried shrimp on it. Two members of our party ordered the cheese grits and they were totally different--one was thick and yellow and the other was white and watery. Basically, we waited 40 minutes to receive cold food of sub-par quality. Very disappointing and it was truly difficult to pay for. read more

After having some time to digest, I can honestly say this is not the place it once was. I had had my first encounter with the cracker cafe about six years ago on a family trip and fell in love with their crab-stuffed flounder. I have recommended this place to anyone willing to listen, but today I was faced with a bitter reality. My friend and I had been driving up from Miami since 6 am and as soon as we left our baggage in the hotel we sprinted for the Cracker. I was incredibly excited. We sat down in a small table near a window and the waitress took our drink order. She soon came back for our lunch order and I asked for crabcakes and my friend for fried alligator and conch fritters. When our order was ready it was plopped down on our table and the waitress rolled her eyes at my friend. The food was terrible, granted neither of us have anything else to compare gator and conch to but not even my crabcakes were decent. The waitress also split our bill without asking us and when it was time to pay she ripped my friends credit card out of her hand. My fiance and I stumbeled into this restaurant when we were doing the tourist tumble down George St on Memorial Day. We chose to sit inside, because it was so hot, but the patio looked shaded and welcoming. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. The dining room was packed, but we felt very well taken care of. I ordered a draft beer (had to in that FL heat) and crabcakes. They were great. The flavor was delicious and they were just the right consistancy, not too mushy, not too dry. My fiance had the Minorcan Chowder, which he said was very good. He also had the Shrimp Po'Boy which he said was amazing. We both had fries on the side and agreed they were some of the best we've had in a while, crispy and not too greasy. We suggest you order the Minorcan clam chowder with the hot datil peppers, the conch (say "conk") fritters which come with a cocktail sauce, the fried green tomatoes with the remoulade sauce and the Florida Cracker Oyster poorboy (say "po'boy") cut in half for you and your significant other (say " girlfriend "). We were greeted by two over-eager hostesses who were extremely friendly and extremely, very happy to seat us and answer our questions about the food. We were sat on the porch, but with all the fans even on a hot day it felt VERY comfortable! Our waiter was super quick to greet us, show us the specials and take our order. Even though they seemed busy our drinks AND food came out super fast. We had the conch fritters and cornbread basket. Conch fritters were slightly overcooked on the outside but I'm still leaving a 5 star review because the inside was amazing and I'm easy to please... so I gladly ate them regardless of being a little dark on the outside. The cornbread basket was 5-star worthy!! So yummy and the honey butter was just icing on the cake! Definitely worth stopping in for a drink or some food! Ive eaten here many times, but its been a few years since i moved to Jax..this visit was sooo good! The fried green tomatoes were crisp, slightly spicy and really just perfect! The fried shrimp are butterflied like i like and the pink sauce is a nice change from regular tartar sauce! The sides were well seasoned and also, different than fries & veggies. Certainly not spicy, and I would dare say it didn't taste much different than broiled. My wife had one of the specials - spicy broiled shrimp over ceaser salad. The shrimp were pretty good - spicy, unlike the blackened fish. Mom had a burger (I think?) and enjoyed it. My son also had a burger, with fries. I tasted both, and the fries were great - that kid of rough edged fries that are kinda seasoned, extra crispy. The burger was also pretty tasty, and the portion was a good size for a kids meal -- I think the price on that was about $5.95 Mom says the coffee was really good. Although the waitress did forget to bring it throughout the entire meal, and was hard to catch. She was quite friendly though overall. They serve dinner after 5 pm as well - I didn't see the menu, but I'd say this is a better option for lunch anyway. Just a hunch. Based on the informal ambiance when I first came in, I figured this place would have a menu full of burgers and not much else, but my brother ordered steak and I ordered coconut shrimp, and both were really good. I had a couple bites of the steak, and that was the most impressive of the two dishes. Really really flavorful, cooked perfectly, and wonderfully tender! The service was fine, but not exceptional. I was very disappointed in the almost complete lack of vegetables on the menu (the veggies of the day were lima beans and potato salad ... really?), and the side salad was pretty much just iceberg lettuce with some dressing, but I think that's pretty common at restaurants in this area. I should have known that trouble was brewing when the watiress let my empty Diet Coke sit for over ten minutes before refilling it. Once the food came out, I had to request more fries, since the ones that originally came out were cold. How this happened, I'm not exactly sure, since 7 or so of us ordered fries. After that, my friend who ordered a salad had to wait over five minutes before she got silverware. We had to flag down a server for that also. The food was OK, nothing to rave about. Outside the restaurant they post a list of all the Covid Virus precautions they are taking which included waiters wearing a mask. Once seated our male waiter arrived without a mask. He additionally talked to customers telling them that the virus was only killing people with prior health problems. The food was okay, but I will not return to a restaurant that openly advertises they are following Covid precautions and then allow one waiter to serve without a mask. Everyone else working in the restaurant wore a mask and gloves - including the hostess outside the restaurant handing out menus. I come here every year for one thing and one thing only and that is their New England Clam Chowder! The absolute very best I have ever had, and I've had a lot of chowder all over the country. The tarragon and thyme that flavors this chowder puts it over the top. They have other wonderful things on the menu but I get the Chowder every time. It is a spoonful of Ahhhhhhh!!!! The house salad is also very good. It is a huge bowl of leafy greens, mandarin oranges, tomatoes, red onions, carrots, cucumbers and sliced apples, with a sesame seed dressing.
