Back to talking about Flour Chylde Bakery; I eyed it while driving through downtown Novato. This is a totally a 100% gluten free bakery. Ya! A few years back I began my appreciation of gluten free desserts and pastries. Prior to that I always thought gluten free equated to dry, crumbly, and tasteless. But gluten free done right is moist and flavorful. And oh boy, this bakery gets it right! I bought a shortbread cookie with jam filling, a mini carrot cake cupcake, and a mini coconut cupcake. Yummy! To name a few items, they have breads, cupcakes, cookies, baguettes, seasonal pies, and breakfast pastries. Get this...they serve sandwiches. They are served on their baked bread! $6.50. Plus they serve coffee drinks. Sorry I wasn't paying attention to that menu of drinks. The front door is an old fashion porch screen door...very cute. The interior has a modern farm kitchen theme. There are several small tables inside and a few outside. The gal they helped us was very friendly and outgoing. I had a great first time visit. This innovative gluten-free bakery in downtown Novato and at the Marin farmers market on Sundays is a secret worth sharing. I adore their rustic lemon and rustic orange tortee. Everything else is wonderful too but those two are my favorites. I no longer live in Novato but when I go back to the bay area to visit, I always place a call in order that I pick up on my way through downtown Novato on my way home to Oregon. These tortes freeze really well. Just be sure to cut them before you freeze them. Nine years ago when I got married and Novato, I chose these and others for our wedding cakes. Wow! This bakery is the only place I've found good gluten free baked goods that don't taste like dust! The cakes are deliciously moist and you can tell they use high-quality ingredients. My favorite is the Lindzer because you can really taste the almond flavor, but I've never had a cake that I didn't like here. Wowee!!! I went to the Napa Valley / Calistoga Farmer's Market and found Flour Chylde Bakery goods. Let me first start by saying that I am typically not a sweets kinda guy. As I walked into the Farmer's Market, the gent working the booth offered me a sample of the almond cake. I tasted it and thought it was okay. After walking by the booth one more time, I spy with my little eye a small cake that looked like lemon cake, dusted with grated coconut. I decided to go in for the kill! I'm glad that I did. The lemon coconut cake ($4) was DELICIOUS! It was a very tart and sweet lemon cake that was moist (almost to the point of being wet) and covered with fine coconut flakes. I enjoyed every bite of it! Grade: A! I decided to go back a third time and get some cakes to go and share with friends. I got another lemon coconut cake, the chocolate flourless tort, the almond chocolate cake, and the almond cake ($17.50 for 4 items). I became the superhero of the day with bringing these treats to share! ** I tried to engage the person at the booth to understand more about the product. I asked questions as, Are you the Pastery Chef? Is your store in town? What is the specialty item from the store? Etc. He was pretty quick and blunt with his answers, as he was too focused on making sales. (I learned he was the "Sales Manager" for the store). I recently started baking flourless cakes and seriously, it's not an easy task to make fluffy and light cakes but with a firm chewiness to them. And if you are health conscious (high in nutrient such as protein, low in carbohydrates and sugar, etc), or need to have wheat / gluten free desserts, Flour Chylde is definitely a great choice. So when I saw the setup I must have to check it out. The owner was very nice and providing different samples of the cakes he made. Oh boy, I love all of them! The wheat/gluten free Rapture Torte was very filled with happy cocoa chocolate, made with almond meal and brown rice flour. It's very delicious with an intimate taste. There is butter in some of these goodies just so you know. The also wheat/gluten free rustic lemon tart that was sublime as they use the whole lemon into the tart! I was shocked that the bitterness of the skin did not get into it, but rather gave a fragrant kick. Each piece costs about 4 to 5 dollars. Not cheap from the first look but did you know that the tarts are a bit more dense and so smaller and fewer bites will already happily satisfy your craving, mentally and physically. read more

The Mission Community Market is one of my more favorite things in the Mission, I have lived here a long time. I visited Flour Chylde Bakery on Aug 21st and Nile was working the stand. I watched Nile treat some fairer skinned people very kindly with smiles and free samples, including large cookies to take home. I did not get any samples or any niceties, basically it was a similar experience to G.K. 's one star review describing it as Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde of customer service. Flour Chylde Bakery is not an actual 'SF community' business as they are located in Marin County and Nile clearly does not live in San Francisco as he was not sensitive to city 'social norms'. Is there any way for Flour Chylde Bakery to address this issue and the various other major issues regarding their customer service by former customers are posting and talking about publicly (filter at the top by rating there are a lot of one stars)? There is a lot of hostility in the Mission these days (with housing and buses, ect) the last thing I need is to go to the farmers market and have a similar experience. read more

I am so impressed by this bakery, it is better than most regular bakeries I visited before I was diagnosed with celiac disease. My grandma bought me some pastries and rolls here so I wouldn't feel left out during Easter brunch and dinner. My food looked better than everyone else's and I'm almost certain it tasted better too. All the pastries looked so cute that I had to try some of their products. The flourless chocolate torte is not bad, but nothing that I cannot bake myself with some cocoa powder, sugar, and butter. Their ginger macroon has a very sweet glaze on the outside. Their cranberry-ginger cookie sandwich was the biggest turn-off for me though; between the two super-sweet shortbread cookies is a layer of super-sweet icing. I got a little sick after eating just one cookie sandwich. After I got home, I realized that the math does not come out right. Was really unimpressed :( I don't normally eat gluten free desserts but the carrot cupcake was pretty dry and tasteless. I'm also not a fan of brownies but it tasted better than the cupcake however it still wasn't anything special. Both weren't terrible tasting but I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to pay the hefty price tag for mediocre tasting desserts. People seem to like their chocolate chip cookie so maybe I'll try that next time they're at my local farmers market. read more

For me, this place is all about its tortes. The french pastries are just too flat for my taste... I prefer the type from Tartine, la Farine, or Rustic... but the tortes... lemme tell you about those rich, sweet, buttery, moist, full of flavor tortes... Lemon coconut chocolate Pumpkin with cream cheese atop $9 for both, and small.... I'd say about 3" in diameter or so? savor the bites! TO DIE FOR. I believe I have found a new go-to bakery the next time I am in Novato - FlourChyld. Being the fan of baked goods I tried a sampler of almost everything in their case - money be damned! Delish cakes such as Lemon Coconut, Pure Chocolate, Rapture, and my favorite, Vanilla Bean. It's good and bad FlourChyld is so far away from where I live. First of all, I read some of the lower ratings and it usually states something about not trying gluten free desserts before. That will play a HUGE part in how the rating and review should go. Most gluten free things SUCK. They really do. Especially bread and pastries. They tend to be super dry. I've tried many gluten free desserts before and they are usually forgettable. Enter Flour Chylde Bakery. I was fortunate to catch them at one of their farmer's market spots. The person staffing the booth was friendly and gave us a killer deal since it was the end of the day. Despite being end of the day goods, they were still so moist and delicious. I'm speaking on the tortes. Those seem to be the hit with me. I didn't even realize they were gluten free and was prepared to have difficult breathing and to become bloated, but then my wife indicated they are gluten free. I was amazed and so was my wife. Being as that she's been with me during the early days where gluten free products were difficult to find--especially desserts, and as mentioned usually suck. As mentioned, my favorite were the tortes. We had the lemon ones and the vanilla. The distinct flavors were evident in both. They were moist, yet didn't break apart like a lot of earlier gluten free desserts. They kept their integrity and I seriously didn't think they were gluten free. If I had one criticism, they were a bit rich and sweet. Some may consider them a tad bit on the "just a little bit too sweet", but it was ok for me. We got some other pastries I don't recall the name for, but they too were moist and decadent. The cookies were of great consistency and had that slightly crisp outside but chewy texture. This place gets a perfect scorer for me because it's probably the best gluten free desserts I've tried. It's tough to compare a gluten free bakery vs a regular bakery then rank the gluten free bakery based on your experience with the regular. It just isnt fair. Apples and oranges. If you don't have celiac nor are sensitive to gluten, you will probably be dissapointed with this place. But for those who are strict about their Gluten Free diet, I know how difficult it is to satisfy your sweet tooth, but now you have this place. read more

I've only visited them when they're at the San Carlos' Farmer's Market: Hot Harvest Nights on Thursdays. The gentleman that's always assisting me is extremely helpful and friendly. You can tell he's very passionate about their products. He's lets you try many of the items and is more than happy to explain what everything is. Items I've tried: Little Black Dress: A combination of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and Brandy Rustic Orange Torte: A moist orange cake with whole almonds and no wheat flour Lemon Coconut Torte: This cake combines the texture of coconut along with the intense flavor of a lemon bar Pumpkin Cake: Dense, moist pumpkin cake filled with vanilla frosting, plus dairy and gluten-free Chocolate Devil's Food Cake: Dark Chocolate cake filled and covered with swirls of dark fudge icing Chocolate Bourbon Chocolate Peanut Butter My favorites are the Little Black Dress, the chocolate bourbon and the chocolate peanut butter. I typically stay away from gluten-free items because they're either dry, tastes too powdery, or lacking in flavor. The little cakes & tortes here are none of that. Flavors are very strong and the cakes moist. I always have to get a Little Black dress at the very least when I go to the market but I usually get a seasonal item as well. Lovely sunny little cafe in picturesque Novato. The staff are very nice and eager to please. I got there early and the latte did not come out right because the machine had not warmed up. The lady making it noticed even before she served it and made me another as soon as the machine was up to the task. The condiment stand had Truvia (stevia), C&H sugar, raw sugar and wooden stirrers. Such a difference from Dunkin Donuts in my hometown of Boston. The gluten free flaxseed muffin was delicious. I will be back to try the egg breakfast sandwiches and savory croissants. read more

Nice french style decor and a cute bakery to go to in the historic downtown novato area. But their selection is very limited. Not a lot of options, and they run out of stuff pretty early on in the day (i went on a saturday, maybe its different on weekdays) The prices are good, and the sandwiches also looked good, although I didn't try them. I first tried this place when they came down to the San Carlos Farmer's Market and I'm so glad they did. Delicious! I love their pumpkin bread ($8) - moist and tasty and it's almost all gone. Sad to say I didn't share it with anyone yet.. I also tried their Macaroon Torte - which was really good. The coconut flakes taste good. The Chocolate Torte with caramel - It was too chocolatey and rich for me. I wish it had more caramel in it. The top part of the Torte was delicious though.
