I am a comic book novice. Don't get me wrong, my level of nerd is high, but I never had more than a passing interest in comic books. That all changed about 10 weeks ago when my favorite TV show continued in comic book format. I contacted Flying Colors Comics via email, to make sure they would be carrying the title I'm interested in. Joe the owner got back to me in a timely fashion, and even set me up on a courtesy call list. This means they call me the day before or the day of to let me know my comics are in and they are kept behind the counter for me. I had NO idea comics came with multiple awesome covers! I have mainly dealt with Aaron in the store and he is the main one who calls me to tel me my comics are in. I find him very knowledgeable. I even asked for his help in selecting comics for my pre-teen nephews. I would recommend this store to any novice or experienced comic collector. read more

I used to love this Store alot, especially in the late 1990's through the 2000's, since then I have moved further away. I was used to very helpful and nice customer service that I once got at this store. What happened? I had a unusual request in tracking down a issue that was not present at my local comic book shop for Free Comic Book day. I am some what elderly and Retired. I've been collecting Comics for well over 50 years. Anyways, Being that as it may, that Flying Colors was the Originator of "Free Comic Book Day". I decided I might give them a Try in tracking down a missed issue. Granted I was going a few days after the event. I thought I could ask them for a favor, to which I was willing to make a small nominal purchase of say $5 to $10 , in order to obtain the book I had missed out on Saturday. To get there , I took a afternoon off to drive up there as it is 40 miles from where I live by road. Anyways, The gentle man who was helping me , at first sad , "Well you know Free comic book day ended on Saturday", To which I am fully aware of that, and I mentioned I had patronize my own local shop in my Area that very day. if I had the time I would of gone up to Flying Colors. So anyways As I am looking for a book to buy to obtain the book I wanted, he suddenly pulls what I consider to be a real Dick move on his part.. He said "If you want the free comic, you'll have to spend a minimum of $25" To which I replied "I'm sorry, but I am a retired person, , I not only spent precious gas in getting to your store, I am limited to a budget around $10", to which he replied, his own wife limits him too a similar budget!". At this point I was expecting maybe a bit of compassion, especially since the book was originally given for free, and I too , Understand the position they're in as a business, but that Comment about having to spend $25, completely struck me from Left field . up until that point I was willing to buy a book or two, but his comment killed it... It's just as well that I've moved out of that area where Flying Colors is, , now I know why it's called "Flying", because they don't give a Flying Fuck about their Customers and their lack of compassion towards someone who has read and collected books for well over 50 years, definitely shows... I will not be back!!! (P.S. this is not the first time they've missed a opportunity with me as a customer, What happened? You guys used to be really cool!) read more

A great place to visit, let alone buy comics. Flying Colors Comics & Other Cool Stuff are always well stocked and offer a vast selection. My kids love coming here and just losing themselves in discovering new titles or revisiting old faves. The staff are true comic book fans, are very knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. When we're in Concord, we try to make it a point to visit. Always a great experience coming here. read more

Flying Colors is THE best comic store I've ever been to. I shopped there as a kid - and met several artists that the owner, Joe, was able to bring in - and still compare it to every comic store I go into today. I live in New York, and when I'm back in the area, I still stop by. Not only is Joe one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, he's also enthusiastic about the art form of comics and will spend more time than could possibly be profitable for him explaining and showing comics that he likes to imbue his customers with the same. I'm still influenced to this day. All of the books on the racks are in perfect condition and the back issues are all fairly priced based upon their condition - which is almost always above good. The graphic novel collection is amazing considering the space they take up and provide an easy way for anyone new to the medium to catch up. If I still lived in Concord, I'd still shop there. As is it, I'll just never forgive any other store for not being as good. read more

I have been to several comic book stores over the years and Flying Colors is the best! They have the best selection out there. They also include a nice assortment of action figures and collectibles. The employees there are extremely helpful and knowledgable. I have never stumped them with a question. I have never felt like they would rather be doing something else. And, they have given me great recommendations on what to read. I also want to mention that Free Comic Book Day is great there. I bring all of my kids and they love it. They can't wait for it every year and they have a great time. I have been going to Flying Colors since I was a little kid. I loved it then and I love it now. I used to ride my bike an extra two miles to go there instead of a closer shop. read more

Awesome comic book and collectable store. The owner Joe and his wife are about as nice a couple as you will ever meet. I have taken my kids to a few other comic book stores over the years and if they don't know you, you might as well be invisible. Not the case at Flying Colors, everyone if very friendly and helpful. My kids love this place and my kids look forward to the first Saturday in May (Free Comic Book Day) every year like it was an extra Christmas. Just too many cool things to mention. Saw the place and popped my head in for a quick look with my 4yr old son. We stayed for an hour and spent over $100 LOL. It's well organized. Has a lot of selections from toys, comics, posters and memorabilia. The Friendly staff is always an added bonus! One of the rare GOOD comic book stores left in the business! read more

This was my first comic book shop so it holds a very special place in my heart lol. I remember walking in not knowing what I wanted other than to look like I did, which I'm sure was a dead giveaway. But despite that, the staff was and has always been really friendly. I think of all the shops I've been too since then; they probably have the most generous free comic book day loot, and as the name implies they have a lot of other really cool items for sale that they've adorned the shop with that's always fun to admire though less fun to dust I'm sure lol. Another thing I appreciate is they don't keep most of their inventory in plastic slipcases. I bet that's a pet peeve for some, but If I'm looking into a new series I want to make sure the illustrations are quality, otherwise idc how interesting the story is, if I'm staring at Minecraft level doodles I'm not interested. And the fact that I don't have to wonder if it's appropriate to open it up, or have to awkwardly deal with putting it back as perfectly as it was like my poor attempt to re-fold a t-shirt in that evil way all retailers fold them is something I value a lot more than those stupid book condoms lol. read more

This is the story of the comic book store that made me switch to digital comics. I came to this comic book store to catch up on about 3 months of comics after moving across the state. This store not only has a poor archive system, but they also charge you a quarter more for every issue they retrieve from the back. Not a huge deal if it is one or two comics, however, when you are getting around 10, (and ones that are already a dollar more, like Action comics) it adds up. On top of that, they bring the comics out of the back unprotected. I don't expect mint condition but at least cover it up of you are going to have it in the back gathering dust! And if a quarter wasn't enough of a raise in price for a 3 month old comic, I had to pay even more to get sleeves for said comics. Maybe I was spoiled by my last comic book store where the owner would track down comics for me outside of his shop if he didn't have them and ALWAYS gave me sleeves (even if it was an issue from 1992) and had a great archive section (even though his shop was literally half the size of this one) that went down in price as time went on, or maybe this shop just sucks. I don't know because I'm not going back and I've since switched to digital comics on my iPad or ordering them online if I want the physical copy. read more

Soooooo...when I went in yesterday...BTW..I've been by this place a total, super, plethorally amount of times...until..well YESTERDAY..I remember seeing the ads on TV with the owners daughter, of course I forgot her name, this was about 18 years ago..Time machine... Present day..year 2016..yes it is..so..when I walked in yesterday I knew one thing I was going to buy, a bumper sticker that has a finger pointing from a hand, and the bumper sticker reads" Get off your damn phone!" I love that!! Isn't that great!!! To many stupid, law braking, idiot morons use cell phones..WHILE DRIVING..IT IS ILLEGAL YOU SELFISH IDIOTS!!! Hang up the phone and try driving!!! I don't read comics, but my brother comes here every Wednesday (when they are open a little later than usual for new-comic shipments) and I go along sometimes. There are certain things that make a comic shop stand out to me. With Flying Colors it's the presentation. Mostly well done, though with new issues kindof scattered it can make hunting dificult, and a bit off the normal beaten path for me. Still the store looks like a big chain as far as cleanliness...something a lot of other stores, even the really good ones miss more often than not. This may become my new "backup store"...I normally get my books in Dublin and I know the new owner looks to Flying Colors for how he wants the store to look eventually, and I think given time it'll get there. My wife bought me a couple of figurines that I wasn't totally into for Father's Day. Life happened and it took me over a month to get back and exchange for something I really wanted. I had hoped a judgment call could be made, being that this a mom/pop shop, but they enforced their 2-week return policy. This exchange was totally my excuse to upgrade with my wife's blessing! My hubby is a regular here and loves this place! I'm not a comic book anything but I wanted to write about Andy.... I am in the field of education and I have seen him interact with children on 2 occasions that made me smile.... The first time he took at least 8 minutes talking to a young child about good guys and bad guys of a series... and patiently answered all the questions he was asked... today my husband excitedly took our 5 month old son into the store for the first time and Andy stopped what he was doing to help us find a good first "comic book" and we ended up with Star Wars Heros.... My son has decided he is now officially a Comic Book Nerd, so for the next few years at least we will be making the rounds of every comic purveyor in Northern California. So far Flying Colors is the nicest store we've been to in terms of (a) service (b) selection and (c) layout. Everything is right there before your eyes, well organized and with plenty of room to move around. An excellent representation of everything that's currently in print. Obviously the owner is a comic fanatic himself and not just in business to make money. Unlike many of the stores we've visited lately, Flying Colors places a strong emphasis on the daily comic strip as an art form, versus the super hero comics that my son loves. I love the layout of this store, how everything is so easy to find and there's ample space to stand and page through a book before buying it. Most comic book purveyors do not offer this kind of clean, well-lit atmosphere for their customers. Five stars. read more

Flying Colors is one of the best, if not the best Bay Area comic book shops. I've always had good experiances there. Only issue I've had is some of the employees can be a bit intimidating when it comes to asking questions about comics, as someone who doesn't know a lot about comics a bit more friendly approach could be helpfull. read more

Amazing store, great employees. Given the owner's standing among comics retailers, I would also say that this is one of the most important comic book stores in the world. Shop has the perfect balance of trades, new issues and gifts/merch. If it came out this week, you'll find it at Flying Colors. There are a few knocks against it for the olden tyme collectors: Very few back issues and an iffy selection of manga. However, this is probably the best business model a comic shop could follow these days. If you want back issues, you can get them online for little to nothing, and if you want manga, you can find it at any major book store. I used to go in every Wednesday, but have only had a couple of opportunities to be back since I've moved. I miss the ritual terribly--especially when I find myself calling around to shops closer to me, hoping one of them actually got the new issue of ___ that week. read more

This is what a comic shop should be. Good selection of comics AND ACTION FIGURES and a knowledgeable staff. They flag "this weeks" new books as well as "last weeks" books so you can easily identify what's new. They are a little hit and miss on the special order stuff and I had to get used to the idea of them being open at 11AM, even on weekends but they balance that out by staying open to 7PM and 8PM I believe on comic wednesdays. read more

I spent about an hour and a half in this store today, spent $10 and walked out with a bundle of great stuff! They have a ton of really good back issue comics and magazines, a lot of hard to find stuff. I asked one of the employees if they had something specific and he spent about 10 minutes in the back room looking for me. They didn't end up having what I was looking for, but the guy didn't seem to mind spending his time to look for me. When I moved out to Walnut Creek from Alameda, I needed to find a more local comic book shop where I could pick up my monthly issue of Darkwing Duck: The Duck Knight Returns (Let's Get Dangerous!) This place is great because they will pull aside my comic and keep it behind the counter for me to pick up at my convenience. They even call me the same day to remind me that they have it (which is great because sometimes I *do* forget). I'm not a comic book person (just a DWD fan) but if I ever require anything else comic-related, I'm confident these guys can help me out. The staff is super friendly and eager to please. This is a pretty decent but a bit smaller comic book store. They have tons of figurines and a pretty solid selection of comics. I enjoy their wall of old and expensive comics (kind of like a museum of sorts). The staff is very nice and enjoy striking a conversation about anything comic related. At one point they were selling comic books by weight and getting rid of tons of comics which was pretty cool (though I don't think they are doing that anymore). Overall great little shop! read more

Seriously, this is probably the best comic book shop you will find that is outside of a major metropolitan area like San Fransisco or L.A. It has stayed true to comics by dodging the RPG and DVD trash cluttering other shops. It is totally family friendly. I'm pretty sure that Joe, the proprietor, is the man behind the nationally celebrated Free Comic Book Day. You can tell he loves his work. Everybody working in the shop is down to earth and friendly. The staff has a massive amount of comic book knowledge, it's ridiculous how much they know. They have everything you can imagine in stock and if on the rare occasion they don't, they will hunt it down for you. Everyone should check this place out. It's a pop culture gem. read more

I have been shopping at Flying Colors since about 1990 if I remember correctly, and have never had a negative experience. When I take my 7 y/o son with me, there is a young lady that works there that is always so friendly with him, and when my wife stops in for me with a list, all she has to do is walk up to a salesperson, and they find everything for her. This shop is the opposite of every "comic book guy" sterotype, and I highly recommend it for the comic buying public. ; ) read more
