The booths have been updated to include additional plexiglass barrier around the top. We ordered Fried Oysters and the Shani Dhabi, as with all their meals they serve their amazing salsa with wonton chips. It is just that, chunky, fresh, and really was perfect with wonton chips. Pan Fried oysters were fantastic, nicely battered and fried, served in the shell with a delicious mix of flavors. This restaurant is probably the most expensive one that I've been to in years and the food can speak for itself. We had reservations at 6:30 pm on a Saturday night so there was no waiting time. We had a party of six, five adults and one child and the seating arrangement was interesting -- two tables, one party of two, and one party of four. The menu was elaborate and simple at the same time. We each shared some appetizers and each ordered our own entrees. I ordered the Seasoned Peppered Ahi, which was basically seared tuna order a plate of noodles and mushrooms. So the reason why we came to this restaurant was to celebrate my dad's eightieth birthday. The service was great, and he ordered the Halibut correct me if I'm wrong. We stayed at the restaurant for about two hours, the service being slow but steady. After looking at approx 15 different restaurants, we decided to stop in to the flying fish grill. It is very cute and intimate setting. We didn't have a reservation, but the host was able to squeeze us in, despite the fact that there are only 45 seats in this underground restaurant. We started with the garlic edamame, which was absolutely delicious. I ordered the halibut, and it was by far the best halibut I've ever had in my entire life. I couldn't even eat anything else on the plate because I didn't want to take away from the deliciousness of the fish. I'm sure everything else is amazing on the menu, but if you are a fan of halibut, even if you aren't a fan of halibut, get the it! We are going to be here for three days and I would love to be able to eat here for every single meal and try everything on the menu. run don't walk if you're in the area and looking for a fantastic dining experience. If you're in the area, definitely stop by Flying Fish Grill for a delicious dinner. Because of the pandemic, we decided to make reservations just in case. I'm so glad that we did because nearly every seat was taken at 7:30pm. Since it does get chilly in Carmel, they had several heat lamps set up to ensure patrons would be comfortable. 1. Raw oysters: these aren't on the menu, but we decided to ask if they served any. Served with a mignonette and a spicy sauce (I forget what it was called), the half dozen oysters weren't too bad, considering it was an off-season. 2. Black bean halibut: my boyfriend seemed to enjoy this more than I did. The black bean sauce imparts an umami flavor to the dish, and the en papillote cooking technique resulted in a juicy, well-cooked piece of fish. 3. Almond sea bass: the almond crust was an interesting way to coat the sea bass, but I enjoyed it. The potatoes were delicious, but I wasn't a huge fan of the Chinese cabbage and rock shrimp stir fry. My partner and I celebrated our anniversary at FFG last month and had a really pleasant time. It has a unique ambiance of feeling casual and upscale at the same time based on its decor and quality of the menu. The team put a little celebratory table topper on our table for the occasion. Our waiter was pretty attentive throughout the meal. He was very specific and clearly had done this thousands of times. The panfried oysters ($17) were pricey but delicious - definitely worth it if you like oysters. The Alaskan Black Cod ($31) was very delicious and an interesting combination of leeks, couscous, papaya, and avocado; I would never have thought those ingredients go together, but each bit was delicious. The seafood pasta ($28) was generous in the amount of fish and was creamy without being over-the-top. Overall, the menu is innovative and fun to look through. Our waiter pointed out that the dessert menu hasn't changed since the establishment opened, which is pretty neat. That being said, we weren't deeply enticed by anything on the dessert menu. We got green tea ice cream, though, which our waiter put a candle in and comped for our anniversary. read more

My family and I fly in from Colorado multiple times per year to eat here. Ownership has changed since Ken and Tina retired, but EVERYTHING is the same. We were "walk-ins" and Rick (Mgr/Server) was most GRACIOUS in accommodating us! His customer service skills were EXEMPLARY! Attentive, professional AND gracious he deserves special KUDOS for providing us with a wonderful dining experience! The Menu (see pics) was well rounded and not EXTENSIVE...which to me was a definite plus. In my opinion (yours may be different) too many items on a multiple page menu screams "we do nothing REALLY WELL here, yet we serve everything but the kitchen sink." We ordered (see pics) the California Tower (3.5/5), Nikumaki (4.5/5), Pan Fried Oysters (4/5), Almond Sea Bass (5/5). Winners were Almond Sea Bass...ya, order THIS, the Nikumaki and the Fried Oysters! Sooooo, why not 5 Stars? Well...honestly, the "value" factor didn't quite fall into place. Got the crab tower, black bean halibut, and almond sea bass. First off, the fried wonton and salsa here is amazing. The wonton isn't hard or stuff and still has reasonable crunch to it. And this makes the texture super nice when you eat it cause it just kind of crumbles in your mouth when you eat it with salsa. The dungeoness crab tower is actually just a California roll composed in another way. It has sushi, seaweed, avocado, and rice. There was a fair amount of crab on it so I was pleasantly surprised. Was kind of nice just eating crab and rice and choosing which bites would have more crab. The sea bass was really good. The sauce is a little thick and sweet and the sea bass sits on some mashed potatoes. The potatoes and the sauce go very well. The sea bass itself was also cooked so the outside was seared nicely (with carmelizes almonds). The black bean halibut was Asian style since it used fermented black beans. It gave it a much stronger taste and added to the fish since the fish didn't have too much flavor as it was just steamed over a bed of veggies Also got the banana sundae. I don't understand how this restaurant has such great reviews. Our hotel called and got us reservations 8:30pm on a Saturday night. We arrived on time and were seated next to the fireplace. The service was very slow. It took a while before we got menus, water and our orders taken. We ordered the edamame, the Tuna tartar and the almond sea bass. Honestly, the edamame was the best out of all the food. The tuna was so bland, it tasted plain. No flavor. The thin slices of toast served with it were soggy and stale. The edamame had great flavor and was possibly the best dish of the night... Sad to say that. The almond sea bass tasted like a fish you'd get at a catering hall for a cheap wedding. The sauce was goopy and the flavors didn't even stand out to me. After we ate, it also took a while to pay so I ended up having to flag down a bus boy to hand over our bill. Flying Fish has such a sweet group of people working the restaurant. They really take care of you. The food is quite good and so are the desserts. In our group we had the Halibut, Sea Bass, Ahi, and Seafood pasta. We all enjoyed our meals. Our server even brought us out a green tea ice cream scoop to try because my girlfriend said it was favorite. The chocolate decadence cake was delicious.
