My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of dining at The Flying Pig for a Saturday night date, we got there quite early so it wasn't too crowded. We started by trying some of their cocktails: the High Noon, and another whose name escapes me. However, the real star was the Southern Drawl, it was a refreshing and sweet little drink. To kick things off, we opted for the deviled eggs and pork belly to share. The deviled eggs, brined in sweet tea, offered a unique twist, though they could've used a touch more seasoning, a little Maldon salt. The pork belly, however, was a triumph. While the pork itself needed a bit more salt, the corn cake pancake really balanced it out, resulting in a delicious appetizer. For our main course we went with the steak (which was a NY strip if I remember correctly) and mashed potatoes, along with r the shrimp and grits. The steak, ordered medium rare, was more on the rare side, we didn't mind but I bet other people would make a fuzz about it. It was still perfectly seasoned and that made up for it. The shrimp and grits allowed for customization with optional cheese and bacon for the grits. Although I opted out, the dish was still a hit, with only a minor complaint about the trinity red sauce overpowering the grits slightly. The atmosphere was cozy, the service attentive, and the pricing felt right for the quality of the dining experience. I look forward to returning and trying more stuff! read more

One of our favorite places to eat whenever we're in Oceanside! Recently had dinner there on a busy Saturday evening, the wine bar was packed with a private event, the restaurant was full as well, but the vibe was great, the service was spot on, the charcuterie board & pork belly apps we ordered were amazing, and the fried chicken thighs....omg....to die for! Came in here for a Christmas Eve meal. The service was great. There was one waiter handling the holiday rush, and he was kind, helpful, and we felt taken care of despite his load. So I really wanted to like The Flying Pig. After all, 1436 reviews and almost 5 stars, it's gotta be good, right? Unfortunately, our experience was the total opposite. We came here for dinner before the YEE at the School of Hard Locks (https://www.yelp.com/biz/yelp-elite-event-school-of-hard-locks-oceanside). Their online menu looked great and they have a Happy Hour from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm which worked perfectly with our timing. We arrived at 5:07 pm, there was one couple seated at the table below the Flying Pig logo and about 5 people seated at the bar. The decor is cool. Menus are encased in record sleeves which is cool. Hubby got a Doors Album and I got a Steve Winwood album. There's an upside-down airplane near the front. The water glasses are old-school tumblers that are seriously heavy. Plates are mix and match, think Goodwill castoffs where no two are the same but it works with the decor. Not wanting to eat too much before the YEE we got several small items to share: the salt and vinegar fries, fritters, Caesar salad, bacon mac n' cheese, and 626 flatbread. I got the Track 7 Nukin Futz Imperial Peanut Butter Chocolate Cream Porter. The matchstick fries had potential but they lacked vinegar and were cold. The fritters (think hush puppies), 7 pieces of fried batter smaller than a donut hole with green onions and a tiny pencil eraser sized piece of burnt bacon in each drizzled with honey, were tasty and hot. At $5 Happy Hour pricing worth it. I wouldn't want to pay $8 (normal price). Loved the presentation of the Caesar Salad, something you'd see at an upscale restaurant with large pieces of thick bacon was a nice touch but the dressing missed the mark and was flavorless. The toppings on the 626 flatbread were generous but it wasn't very warm. Because of all the positive reviews, we had such high hopes for the Bacon Mac N Cheese but we disappointed. Not only was it cold, sure there was steam coming off the dish and the pan was warm, but the inside was practically chilled. I got the impression that it's one of those prepare ahead, store in the fridge, and then heat up when someone orders it. You know it's cold when the cheese sticks together and doesn't even get gooey or stringy. Not only was it cold, it was flavorless. On the positive, there were huge chunks of bacon. Our server was nice and on top of things, hence the saving grace of a 2 vs a 1-star rating. The big question: would I go back again? Had we come during a busy time or towards closing, the cold food could be explained. But we arrived early, didn't order anything hard to cook or prepare nor did we make any menu substitutions. I loved the cool atmosphere, the service was good, and who doesn't love everything with bacon. But flavorless cold food I can do without. So maybe, maybe not... read more

Our server was literally the nicest person ever! The chef brought our food out as soon as each plate was done which was great as we ate it all fresh! The alcohol was also great! This was my 2nd time coming here and it was just as good the 2nd time. Free street parking nearby. There was a little line and had to wait a few minutes to get a good table. The menu has several starters/appetizers we tried the bread with goat cheese and garlic. It is delicious but I wish the bread was more like a crustini and not so crumbly. I got the burger about $15 and it was cooked a perfect medium rare. The burger was juicy, flavorful and delicious. It comes with some tasty thin fries. They are good I just wish they were a thicker cut. I spread the extra goat cheese on the burger and it was delicious. I also got to try a bite of the jhidori chicken about $18 and it was moist, juicy and flavorful. I also got to try a bite of their specialty pork chop and grits and it is worth every penny of the $25. I also got to try the cheesecake with a jam or glaze and it is a wonderful dessert and way to finish The service is very friendly and they were constantly refilling drinks and checking to see if we needed anything . Flying Pig has a unique layout with a large outdoor patio, a "fancy" dining room (heard the servers saying that - so cute!), a smaller casual dining room, a bar, AND a street-facing counter! Depending on your mood or your group, there's a seating option for everyone. I sat at the bar and had great service from several different staff members. Everyone was super friendly, gave good recommendations, and had a great service style. Plenty of time between check-ins so I didn't feel smothered, but my drinks were never empty and dishes were cleared promptly when done. The food was outstanding! I got the cauliflower, the Caesar salad, and their cheesy grits. Oh lordy, every bite was amazing. The cauliflower stole the show. This place has been in Oceanside for many years, their new location is so much easier to get to, at least if you're on foot: parking is still parking at the beach. I'm not a fan of taking up sidewalk space for restaurant use but that seems to be the norm in Oceanside now. read more

Brussels sprouts brought me in... Only to be severely disappointed that they took it off the menu... mainly because other places were copying their menu!! Which saw because we almost went to one cause they had Brussels sprouts. The menu really didn't interest me. Server was patient, walked us through must have items. He said the pork, though didn't sound that great, was life changing... I went for the prime rib special. I can't remember what it was called, I don't care for fatty cuts and he said there was no fat, just soft and tender. Chef definitely likes the fried egg. Put it on top of a pork chops and grits, my hubs doesn't care for grits, but put his faith in the chef. He says it was the best meal he has ever had in his life. We were here on vacation and he wanted to eat here every day! We will be back one day, and I'm sure they'll still be around. read more

After spending the day walking the Oceanside beach I got a hankering for a salad. So I did a quick search for places to get a salad and this nice place caught my interest. It's a nice intimate spot with outside seating and friendly staff. Today I ordered the kitchen sink salad with fried chicken and the pork sando. Both choices were absolutely to die for and were special in their own way. The pork sando was full of flavor with the highlight being the dijonnaise just bringing all the flavors from the pork and pickles. The fries were a decent portion but seasoned perfectly salt and pepper style. The kitchen sink salad was delicious from the sliced apples, olives, sun dried tomatoes and the chicken was cooked perfectly. Unfortunately some of my turn offs were the lettuce in the salad not being cut up and just being huge chunks of leaves. Also the pork in the salad tasted dry and unflavorful.
