I went with an Old Fashioned and a warm, soft pretzel with honey butter... and both hit the spot. They also have a full bar plus coffee and tea, so there's something for everyone whether you're here for the drinks, a bite, or a little friendly Mahjong competition. Just a couple days ago a friend mentioned Fox Den was one of her favorite coffee places. I guess it was just a little out of the way for me. I didn't make my own coffee this morning on purpose. We were going out to get coffee and a bag of whole beans from one of my favorite FC coffee shops. I suddenly realized I could use this opportunity to finally stop by Fox Den. The SO asks if I want to go there instead. I say yes, but with a little hesitation. I mean how good can this place really be? Will it live up to expectations? Does the "No Waste" theme come at the cost of compromising coffee quality? Upon entering the cafe, I see a wall of mugs to choose from. I pick the Mickey Mouse one. I place my standard new coffee shop order-a cortado and drip coffee. The barista taking my order says that's his favorite mug. The drip coffee comes first. I chose the light roast. It has mild acid, barely perceptible bitterness, and nice smoothe coffee flavor. I really can't ask for a more balanced cup of coffee. One of the best drip coffees I've had in a cafe. My cortado is up. The barista apologizes for his subpar latte art. It's not that bad. Consistently good latte art is not as easy as some baristas make it look, and baristas are allowed to be human. Besides, this is not the Louvre and art is not what I'm here for, no apology necessary. This cortado is excellent. The high quality pulled shots of expresso shine through the nicely steamed whole milk. I have to know which blends they used in my drinks. El Zorro for the cortado and Foxy Gal for the drip. I compliment the other barista on the shop's coffee. She humbly tells me, "the shots are pulling well today". Typically, when I get my usual cortado and drip coffee, one is better than the other, even if slightly so. Not today. Today both are of equally high caliber. It is a good coffee day.

As we were wandering northward someone started suggested G&B. My reaction was absolutely not, why don't we go to Persimmon instead? "Oh, I've heard good things - where is it?" There. "Where?" Right there. "I don't see it." That door directly across the street from us! Persimmon is quite inconspicuous from the street, but is one of Fort Collins' hidden in plain sight gems. That proved to be a good thing on a day where thousands of people pretty much had the same thought of needing something to warm up - while there were throngs at other places we passed by Persimmon was nearly empty. Our group of 6 easily found a comfy spot for our group. It turns out the we beat the lunch rush - it started to get quite busy once noon rolled around. After perusing the menu for warm drinks a few decided they were hungry so food was ordered as well. I had a matcha latte, unsweetened, and it was a perfect choice to warm up after being out in the wind and bluster that morning. They use a ceremonial grade matcha, which I found to be smooth and really not bitter. I also shared a pastrami sandwich with one of my friends - they were nice enough to bring out the sandwich halves on two plates. While not a New York deli kind of sandwich, it was good - quality ingredients on focaccia. They source their pastrami from a specialty butcher in Denver, though I've forgotten their name. Sandwiches are served with kettle chips that are light, crispy, and not too oily. In a previous visit I had their tuna sandwich and sampled some appetizers. The tuna sandwich was among the best I have ever had - I can't really put my finger on why but I do remember that my first bite wowed me. I didn't see the meze sampler on the menu this time, but as I recall the beet hummus was a standout. I don't lunch out in Old Town very often, but Persimmon is always such a pleasure.
