Foley - I am disappointed and dislike to update my review but my previous review is not right. After a few years of not working with Foley we have uncovered problems with one of the big projects they worked on (commercial nor residential) I'm thankful for my husband who understands electric (we're recently married and he has been helping me) who has saved me money on correcting some errors and understanding what was done. Seems workmanship was lazy and that I was upsold equipment that was uncessary or overkill Sorry Foley to write this review - after having my husband and another electrician review your work I am just bummed about what we have found. read more

We have worked on and off with Foley electric over the years and had generally good results. Unfortunately, with recent staff changes, it has become impossible to continue to be a client. We asked them for a project proposal and quote for a large project at our property and were promised a quote within a few days. Nothing. We followed up, and were again promised a quote within a few days. Nothing. We followed up, spoke with the office, and were vehemently promised a quote within a few days. Nothing. So now we are moving on, disappointed that a previously good service provider is no longer a serious one. read more

I needed a circuit switch to 240 to accomodate a dual fuel range. Garry came out looked at everything and we agreed on terms. The assigned electrician came out about 8 days before the appliance delivery. Very nice and professional. The day of range delivery and install, there was a slight hiccup due to the discrepancy between the manufacturer paperwork and what the new range really needed. All was resolved. Everyone was very nice, professional, and committed. This includes Anne in the office, Garry senior electrician/scheduler, and the electrician (I think Morgan or Logan). I called for help at 8:30 in the morning after the alarm on the space heater in the bathroom went off and I found the outlet hot to the touch. A technician was at my door in less than 2 hours. He discovered the bathroom outlet did not have a ground wire (yikes), and was able to install one by running a wire through the attic craw space. He then installed a new outlet, plus replace another in the living room, before lunch. The technician was professional, polite, and efficient, and I will call them again and recommend them. read more

Very happy with the work done for two different projects. First was upgrading wiring for an induction cooktop include wire replacement, circuit breaker upgrade, and required under house work. Second, was adding wiring and circuit for heat pump water heater which also required under house work. Work was done on time and cost matched budget. read more

Michael and his team were fantastic. They were so well versed with Menlo Park permits and were on top of getting the main panel installed and permitted. They could not have made my life easier. I wasted 2 days trying to guess what the city needs in terms of submission and I got it rejected. They gave us the advice on what panel to install to get the house ready in the future for EV charging. What a great team. read more

Had a great experience with Foley! I had an issue with a few room ceiling lights randomly losing power and it could have been a variety of things causing. The team took time to maximize time (and thus cost to me) and fix the safety issues they found along the way. They were quick and efficient and very kind in explaing what they found. I am appalled by the practice of this business and its employees. So sad too because this was recommended by my neighbors with positive Yelp reviews. 1) I was quoted $245 for the first hour, higher than the subsequent hourly rate because it includes travel time: and when the bill came, it showed "including travel time" means to charge extra half an hour at the technician's rate, and had nothing to do with $245 rate except it is now much higher. 2) I was quoted hourly rate after the first hour at $185: when the bill came, another $45 was added because the technician brought someone with him that I was never told. The other person provided a little help but mostly was given a lesson at this job. Why was I getting the impression they thought that I was clueless and helpless, and most of all, thoughtless and could not see what they were doing? By the way, I have a Master's Degree in Computer Science, so I am not a complete fool. 3) Having been burned so many times by contractors changing rates on the fly, refusing to finish work as promised unless more than the agreed amount was paid, etc., I am now in the habit of documenting their work and their hours. They took such a long break that I questioned right there and then to be sure that time was not charged to me. Yet, the bill came, a full hour more than my logged time - at the rate of the technician plus the unauthorized apprentice! 4) After sending them a screenshot of my notes and voicing my objection, they adjusted the bill: but only to remove the extra untold and unauthorized apprentice's fees. Expected me to be fully satisfied. Would anyone be in my position? In case one wonders if this is a case of "he says she says", please remember in these modern days, phone companies can easily pull out records, and AAA (came to open the truck in which they left their keys, and they could not finish work without certain tools and materials in the truck) has records as well. read more

Final price was what we agreed upon and even though everything feels expensive in the Bay Area, I feel like the price was fair given the quality of the work and the time it took to complete. Our house was an oven with the warm weather. Bruno installed 2 new ceiling fans and voila, we can sleep now. They helped with switches, light timers, specialty lighting fixtures, the works. I had a long list of items and all were addressed. It only took a few days from my original contact to the appointment. They will remain our go to electricians. read more

They were pretty quick to respond to our call but unable (or unwilling) to resolve either of the issues we called them for. Our spa had shorted the GFCI. They confirmed that but were not willing to look at the spa for the souce fo the short. (A spa repairman came later and did that in 5 minutes). Then he looked at our ceiling fan which had just stopped working. He couldn't take the fixture apart just looking up at it and playing with the remote. He said I should just get a new one. Later, a handyman came and fixed it in 30 minutes. He seemed satisfied to collect his service charge and didn't fix anything or professionally diagnose it. Then, we got their bill. I will pay the bill but I was not happy with the service or competence level and will not be using this firm again. read more

Well we finally embarked on fixing up some of our old electrical in our house - mainly upgrading the main circuit breaker panel and grounding the office outlets, adding some new outlets and switches, etc. We chose Foley Electric based on the fairly good reviews here and on Checkbook, and they actually were the least expensive of the three electricians we talked to. Earl and team did the work in about 3 or 4 days. Everything proceeded smoothly and things looked nice. After they wrapped up all was well ... UNTIL... about a week later we started having weird electrical issues again, but worse than before. The kitchen appliances had low power, and the lights would get brighter when those appliances were used, and would flicker when the printer was turned on, the office circuit breaker would sometimes trip if the garbage disposal was used. Foley Electric had scheduled PG&E to come out and redo some connections, so I was hoping that would fix the problem but it didn't. Electricians thought it was likely a PG&E problem, PG&E blamed the electricians. In fact every single PG&E guy made some sort of remark about electricians - "I don't trust them", "they're in it for the money", "I bet this wasn't inspected', etc. etc. while saying it was probably a problem inside the house. Meanwhile the problems continued. After visits from a few PG&E teams where they were pretty sure it wasn't their problem, Earl came out again and rechecked everything at the house - all looked good on the inside. He called up PG&E, and this guy (who still made remarks about not trusting electricians), brought a device called SuperBeast which could measure the voltage and determine whether the problem was outside or inside. Why they didn't do that test on their previous visits is beyond me, but it showed that yes indeed the problem was outside. So he then fixed the problem - and now all is great! So thank you to Foley Electric for doing a good job and persisting with PG&E - I would use them again without hesitation. And PG&E why did it take you guys several visits (and it was hard to get them out in the first place) and all that mouthing off about electricians before finally figuring out it was YOUR problem in the first place? I would give these giys 10 starts if I could. I bought my light fixture in Pakistan and had it shipped here. A beautiful piece but with several problems: - it was a flush mount so it needed to be converted - the bulbs it required were specialized European style candle lights - because it was over 300 pounds I needed an extra beam in my ceiling. - because the ceiling was so high we needed a scaffold to hang it. We were getting ridiculous quotes from different people to the point where I was thinking about just selling the damned thing! John sent his team, they had the fixture sent to an external party who did a very clean job of converting it into a chandleier. It was taking them longer than planned but John kept me posted on any or even no progress made which is typically a difficult call to make to your customer when you have bad news to give them. His guys came and installed the chandelier. It looks gorgeous, I'm so glad and was so thankful to Yelp that we found these people!! I called Foley Electric after I could not get my original electrician to come fix a problem with a light fixture that was installed by him a year ago. This company runs a professional operation. I called and actually spoke with a person! She took my info and I received a call back promptly. Eric came out to troubleshoot my problem. He had to order a part and called me when it came in to arrange a time to come back out. It's all fixed now and I am very happy with the work. Eric is knowledgeable, prompt and courteous. Our experience with Foley electric was amazing! We had an emergency need because a tree fell down on our property and knocked our electrical box down with the line. It was a Friday night on memorial weekend and they sent several men out to get us back up and running. They even dealt with PGE and the county for permits required to finish the job. Sadly, I am sending this 1-star review in response to a visit by them on Dec 30, 2016, for installing 2 extra circuit breakers on account of a breaker that was overloaded. I'm posting this review because I got 2 letters from San Mateo county this year [2018] saying that the permits Foley got for the work had not received final inspections. The work was done without a permit and seems to have caused 2 false alarms outside my condo and repairs to the [broken] alarm, for which I was billed $1580 and fined $500. The extra circuit breakers were not to code. The code changed, on its regular schedule, on Jan 1, 2017; the permit was obtained by Foley electric in 2017. John Philpot from Foley complained that of course circuit breakers installed in like September of the previous year weren't up to code, but I pointed out that these were installed Dec 30, with the work completed ~Jan 2, 2017. Foley electric said they would pay the $1580 bill and sent me a document saying they HAD paid me this money, which was not true. Quite a dreadful experience, which is not over yet, 14 months later! Hence the 1-star review. read more

I called Foley based on all these terrific reviews and I was really ready to like them: The electrician called me back right away, sounded very competent and confident and we scheduled a convenient time. The time for the appointment came, but he didn't show up and he didn't call. About an hour after the appointment was supposed to have started, I called the office and asked what I should expect. The woman was very nice and said she'd have to call me back--and she did, about an hour later to say that my appointment had somehow been deleted and that no one was available. I had scheduled this work based on a deadline. It really needed to be done. The inconvience and additional expense this caused was signficant. From Foley there were lots of apologies, but no action. I think all these reviews are probably right on--if you can get the electrician to actually show up. read more

I've had them do 3 projects on my house and each time was to my satisfaction. Most recently had 2 outlets and an overhead light replaced. He took the time to troubleshoot the living room outlet problem and found a melted plastic housing over a wire in the kitchen outlet that was on the same circuit. He fixed that and then the outlet. Reserving one star until we receive the invoice but based on the experience we had with Joe and Eric today they deserve the fifth. They arrived promptly at 8:15 as scheduled and dove into our list of tasks. We were impressed that they didn't try to upsell us but were very honest about the issues, a couple of them being as simple as faulty lightbulbs. Joe also offered suggestions for future work. My experience with Foley Electric has been extremely positive. We have had our main circuit breaker replaced (twice...fortunately it was at two different homes) and a new fuse box with a 220 line to a hot tub installed. Working the Michael, the process was thoroughly explained, well-executed and done with high customer satisfaction. I ended up having multiple conversations with Michael and every time I end the phone call, I wish more contractors had his approach to helping their customers. He has a very calm demeanor (much appreciated when it comes to the potential hazards of electrical problems) and doesn't seem to mind explaining all options available to you. I also have had to delay a few projects and this has never been an issue. I am a local residential real estate agent who has been using the services of John Philpott and Michael Hansen at Foley Electric for years. I know when I give their names to clients I can count on expert knowledge and prompt service. My most recent experience related to an unsafe panel located in a closet which is generally an installation that is no longer permitted. John came out to diagnose the problem immediately (on a week-end) and made provision for the homeowners' safety until the repair could be completed. He was also available to talk to the homeowners in the evening by telephone to discuss the diagnosis, estimated cost to repair and the permit process with the local jurisdiction. I was skeptical at first when my landlord was going to send out his team of electricians because well let's face it, his handyman is really just an old drunk who really should be called the not so handyman. During a recent electric outage that took place on a Friday afternoon, it was almost impossible to find an electrician who would come out to fix a problem resetting our master fuse box. Another company recommended Foley Electric. Foley responded immediately by having an electrician to our house in 1/2 hour.
