I came with my husband for some post-dinner dessert. We walked over and ordered two small ice creams in cups. The service was fast - they are efficient with samples. My husband had the chocolate pudding and I got raspberry crumble. The flavors were tasty! My complaint about mine is that there was way too much of the oat crumble. It was almost like having a lot of chewy granola in my ice cream. I prefer a finer, crispier granola. In general, over time you start to notice the coconut flavor of the ice cream base which isn't my favorite. That's the cost of eating vegan ice cream I suppose. We sat inside at a big picnic-style table inside and enjoyed the ambiance for a bit. Would recommend for a small treat if you're nearby, but if there is a J.P. Licks across the street I'd choose that over Fomu any day. read more

I've been to FoMu a few times and am always underwhelmed. While the ice cream is pretty good, I don't think it's good enough to be as expensive as it is, especially with a lot of other creameries and ice cream manufacturers having vegan options, as well. During my last visit to FoMu, I tried the cookies and cream ice cream and was somewhat disappointed. The taste of coconut in the ice cream overpowered the actual flavor. On the bright side, the texture is fantastic and the ice cream is rich and creamy. The grasshopper pie flavor is incredible. If FoMu were more affordable, I wouldn't hesitate to give 4 or 5 stars. I just don't think the ice cream is special enough to warrant such high prices. read more

I admit, I was skeptical. Was FoMu merely another morsel of a Vegan agenda? A part of the Trendy Healthier Foods agenda? After all, the ice cream I grew up eating usually came from the overly suckled teat of a cow (see general concerns about the contemporary dairy industry). I stand corrected. After my aunt told me at least eighty-six times over the course of two weeks that I HAVE TO GO TO FOMU when I'm in Boston, and others recommended the place, I decided that a visit would be obligatory. I strolled into FoMu South End on a sunny, warm day. Dry, but an excellent time for ice cream. But (allow me to briefly push my agenda) as I've said and will say again: ~~~IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE HOT TO EAT ICE CREAM.~~~ Back to it: I strolled into the chilled, nicely decorated FoMu in the South End, sampled several flavors, and ultimately settled on the avocado ice cream. If you think avocado can only be savory, you need to reevaluate your beliefs. This was some thick avocado goodness. Cold and creamy, the ice cream yielded that sweet, sweet sensation as it melted and oozed down my gullet, into my entrails. TLDR; the ice cream was great. As creamy, if not CREAMIER, as cow milk ice cream. And much more sustainable! Note that I deducted a single (1) star for the prices. Although unsurprising, FoMu is expensive. Expect to spend over $5 for an ice cream. Don't go to FoMu expecting some sort of sweet watery sludge. Although there isn't a single drop of animal milk, the ice cream here rivals that of Stewart's Shops in upstate New York. I would recommend, just save up the funds first. read more

The ice cream are not located in clear sight to see what each flavor looks like; instead, they are located to the back wall behind the counter. However, the staff is willing to make the walk back there with sample spoons in hand if you'd like to try a couple flavors before ordering. I love that they are environmentally friendly and use compostable material for the bowls, spoons, napkins, etc. I was hoping to get lavender ice cream after seeing it in photos. However, the ice cream flavors are seasonal and/or rotate, and that flavor was not available. Thus, I ordered a brownie with cookies & cream ice cream, drizzled with hot fudge and caramel, and topped off with spiced nuts. The brownie appeared to be dark chocolate, and was hard since it had been sitting out behind the counter. It would've been great if they could store it better or warm it up before serving. The cookies & cream ice cream was divine. It was creamy and spoon-licking delightful. It could fool a dairy aficionado into believing that it was made using milk; NOPE, it's all dairy-free. I had the Apple cider donut ice cream, and the flavor was spot on. It had pieces of actual apple cider donuts mixed in, and it brought me right into the fall mood. A vast space not only for the south end, but for an ice cream shop in general. The menu features basics(that's where I stay) and then your wacky, I mean creative flavors. The Cool thing about fomu is the ice cream is made from scratch with real, plant-based ingredients. How does this end up being the end product? I have no idea. All I know is that the strawberry is freaking delicious. Like the best I've ever had delicious. My sample size is minimal at best, but I think I just might have found my favorite ice cream shop! Came here on a Friday night with one of my class mates not realizing it was vegan. The vibe is great, love the atmosphere. A very long, open space. Wish there was a more accessible layout for seating. The line up area is also a mess, super chaotic and hard to speak to staff. Once they serve you, you still have to wait to pay and the ice cream melts so quickly that it's half goop by the time you do pay. The staff were friendly enough, but when I asked if there was water the employee rolled his eyes at me. The ice cream itself was not my favourite. It's very sticky and dry, afterwards I realize that it's because it's vegan. The taste of my cookies and cream was not what I expected. Chucks of pie crust, real strawberry pieces and flavor, not artificial. I could not get enough. My husband had the mint chocolate chip on a waffle cone. Worth the trip for us. FoMu's ice cream is impressive - they are all made with a coconut base, yet they taste very close to regular ice cream. The base is a peanut butter flavored ice cream, which is rich and creamy, but not heavy. You can taste a hint of coconut flavor, though it is barely detectable. I absolutely LOVED the chocolate cookie crumbles mixed in the ice cream - they weren't soggy at all, and the crumbles added texture and a delicious chocolate flavor. This flavor tasted like peanut butter chocolate cups which is always a plus :) STRAWBERRY RHUBARB PIE - 4.5 STARS Though I didn't get a full size, I had a few samples of these hehe! The strawberry flavor tastes super natural and fresh, and there was a hint of rhubarb that made this very unique. I absolutely loved the pie mix-in, which made me feel like I was taking a bite of pie! Got the chocolate and Oreo ice cream. I have never really had good vegan ice cream, texture, consistency and taste are always off. This place was good but wouldn't necessarily come again unless I needed vegan ice cream. I will say compared to all the other vegan dessert places, you cant really taste the coconut milk - u can taste the flavor. Loved the place though - very clean, the water cups really helped on a hot night, also loved how late it was open compared to other places in Boston. read more
