This is by far the best non-dairy ice cream I've ever had. The coconut milk makes it a little thicker than how I typically like my ice cream, but it's still creamy and delicious. Between the matcha white chocolate chip flavor and the cotton candy flavor we got, the matcha wins. It literally tasted just like dairy matcha ice cream, but without the stomachache. The coconut milk was a little more prominent in the cotton candy, but overall still a yummy flavor (maybe a little sweet near the end of my scoop). The interior is very spacious with lots of seating. Yummy spot with vegan ice cream! Didn't know this was vegan until after asking for samples, but you would never know! Flavors change regularly--I ended up with a Lemon Meringue Pie and Earl Grey mix. Both flavors had chunks of crust in them which made it veryyyyy delicious. I got a cookie on the side, but you can have a staff member make a cookie sandwich fresh or you can grab frozen ones from the freezer. Select flavors are also available from their freezer in pint sizes. It's important to note that I do not have any dietary restrictions and am an ice cream connoisseur. Basically, I'm used to classic dairy forward ice cream, which you inevitably compare dairy-free ice cream to. I loved FoMu. I got a scoop of the dark chocolate rocky road. I looove dark chocolate anything and FoMu's ice cream is so creamy despite being dairy-free. It doesn't have any weird aftertaste like a lot of coconut/almond milk ice creams. I think FoMu's ice cream could probably beat out a lot of regular ice cream. They have so many cool flavors and such good quality. It is a bit expensive but what do you expect from vegan ice cream in the South End? It was about $5 for a small cup. There's no indoor seating right now because of COVID, but it had a great vibe and clean (including a clean bathroom). The service was great. Yum! My friends were raving about this place while we were thrifting and so we decided to stop by. I love how you can order 2 different flavors in a mini cup (It is a bit expensive, $4.55 for the tiny cup) but most novelty vegan stores are like that. I bought the seasonal flavors, apple cider donut and pumpkin pie. The apple cider donut had an interesting texture and apparently there are pieces of apple cider donut inside! The pumpkin pie flavor was rich and delicious. Although it is a small size, I thoroughly enjoyed the dessert. After hearing about all the hype, I went to FoMu on Tuesday, to take advantage of taco Tuesday. On Tuesdays, you can get their homemade ice cream tacos. It is large, delicious, and will make you forget all about those choco tacos that you ate when you were young. As for their usual items, they have extensive menu of flavors of ice cream that you won't see at a grocery store ice cream section or even at most ice cream shops. Avocado and Banoffee Pie caught my eyes and we ended up trying Banoffee Pie, which tasted even better than it sounded. I'm a real ice cream fan with a love/hate relationship due to my lactose intolerance, so I was very curious when it came to FoMu. The space is very large for an ice cream shop and had a very chill vibe. I was intially hesitant because I can get really particular about coconut flavored things, but the cookies and cream ice cream. WOW, it was amazing. The texture was a bit different, but I really enjoyed how it was different, if that makes sense. Also, the coconut just adds such a pleasant hint of flavor to the ice cream. Absolutely delicious. Surprise! Fomu's in the South End! Hey! Actually, I had already heard, so spotting it on the corner away from us wasn't a complete shock to me. My friend, however, was surprised. And stoked. We had just been saying if only there were an ice cream or froyo place just about HERE (as we looked around) since otherwise we were about to part ways - me to the right and her left. Yes, we were lazy. But it was hot, and also we didn't have that much time to cure our craving for a little something sweet. Fomu's storefront is not at all wide, but quite deep indeed. But for ice cream, one tends to be willing to trek a bit. For coconut cream based frozen treats... sure, why not. We tried a few samples scooped up for us on popsicle sticks. The flavors I tried were not as coconut evident as in my vague recollections of my visit to the original Allston location many moons ago, which in my opinion was great! Their ice cream is $3.50 for a mini, $4.50 small (1 scoop), $5.95 regular (2 scoops), $7.95 pint, and $6.95/$7.95 for a sundae. Choice of cup or cone (cake or sugar), but an extra buck for a waffle cone. The mini looked way too small - more like dessert for a doll. So I went with the small which I was able to fill with two flavors: Peanut Butter Mud Pie and Banoffee Pie. I guess I got my pie a la mode! The Almond Raspberry Crumble had good flavor, but was too high a crumble to ice cream ratio for me. I prefer my ice creams smooth with smaller bits. There was some seating at this location, as well as a child sized table which seemed to handle adults just as well for those of mixed company. Water was available along the wall by the freezer which housed ice cream cakes (I think he said they were $39.95?) and some prepacked pints and ice cream sandwiches. With summer only just beginning, my evening's companion is sure to be back, dragging her lactose intolerant counterpart along to enjoy a frozen treat some hot day. 3.5 stars read more

I have been going to FoMu for years, and have always had wonderful experiences there. Even if you aren't vegan or have allergies, if you love ice cream you should definitely give FoMu a try. My boyfriend has a dairy allergy so FoMu is our favorite ice cream spot in the city. We usually go to the South End location, but the Jamaica Plain and Allston locations are just as good but South End has way more seating. The bf and I just went to the South End location for dessert and we were excited to see new seasonal flavors on the menu. Service is always very friendly/polite, and FoMu let's you sample as many flavors as you want and they let you combine flavors. I tried the peanut butter and chocolate cookie but settled on a small cup with the lemon merengue and cotton candy flavors and bf got the chocolate cookie dough and more cookies than cream. We enjoyed everything per usual. FoMu flavors always taste exactly like the flavor they're named after. If you're not too adventurous, I'd definitely recommend the strawberry, it's the best strawberry ice cream I've ever had--vegan or otherwise. I haven't had the best milkshakes there, but the baked goods never disappoint. I love the magic bars and the chocolate chip cookies. I think Fomu is good but overhyped. I tried the blueberry shortbread and people in my party tried the raspberry and strawberry rhubarb flavors. All were strong, natural tasting flavors (I think my favorite was the strawberry). Yes it is vegan ice cream. Even with the rich coconut base, there was a slight iciness that I typically get with nondairy ice creams. Depending on the flavor, the coconut-iness comes out more - for example it was pretty strong in the bluberry but less noticeable in the strawberry and raspberry. I also tasted a sliminess (especially when it started to melt) that typically comes from thickeners, again pretty common in nondairy ice creams. I know people say this place is great regardless of whether you're vegan or not, but I have to disagree. There is definitely a noticeable texture difference compared to regular ice cream. read more

FoMu has surprisingly delicious ice cream! The shop itself is really hip, and rather spacious. There is a large community table and various other seating; when we came after dinner, there wasn't a lack of space. They also have a cute kids area! To order, you go all the way to the back of the shop, and there's a board with all the flavors instead of the flavors being on display. We got the cold brew coffee flavor, which is a nice coffee flavor with hints of coconut. I really appreciated how it wasn't too sweet. However, I do have to say that since they use coconut milk, the flavor of coconut is definitely present; it might not be a great place for people who don't like coconut flavors. They also have smoothies and our friend really enjoyed his, though they didn't have all the fruits for his smoothies. All in all, a great alternative to milk-based ice cream!
