Man if you knew Al's cafe on Seminary this is almost the exact same hell they might as well be brothers. But it's a good hole in the wall spot for breakfast. I've always had good food from here just about anything you can think of. It's clean and it's a small spot so expect to either wait to sit or get your food Togo to avoid having to wait outside. The people are quick and friendly and amazing at how fast they can get you your food knowing that they are there early to prep ahead of time. Check them out at least one time! read more

I've been to some of the other Fong's before in Oakland, assuming they're all connected, so when I was in the area I decided to meet up a friend there. Their indoor seating was closed/unavailable, so they only take take-out orders. I tried and recommend their groundbeef scramble, and salmon croquette meal (it usually comes with grits, I ordered it with rice). Both of the entrees came with bread. - A person who ordered before me ordered their salmon croquette well done (to make it crispier, I much try that next time) The staff turned around the order relatively quickly. There was a good amount of tasty food for the price. When you're in East Oakland and looking for breakfast other than fast food, this is a good option. I'd go again. read more

Yes, the cook time can be a little slow--but that's because there's just one chef and one waitress running the whole show. And let me tell you, they are crushing it. Every dish is made fresh to order, and they always get my breakfast just the way I like it. Have been getting my Al's Special with hot links, super soft eggs, spinach for years and they nail it every single time. The attention to detail and care they put into each plate is something you just don't find at chain spots. Service and wait times can be hit or miss depending on what time you make your order as the two person team handles phone orders/ in person orders/ Doordash/Uber Delivery orders all at once but it's totally worth the wait for me. She answered the phone right away one star. Second star bc they got my order correct. She was sort of rude rushing me off the phone! I barely could tell her my order! Slow down have some more patience please!!!! Now I get the food very promptly. I didn't even know how long it would be bc she didn't tell me. I couldn't asks bc she hung up so quickly. The food was 3 scrambled mighty small eggs I would say. I asked for cheese big mistake slice of melted cheese everywhere besides on the eggs! Hot link was good but over cooked taste like beef jerky. There is no parking lot so parking can be annoying ESPECIALLY on the weekends ( they're busy every weekend ! ) you can sit and eat inside which I have before , but it's easy to get skipped in there if it's busy since it's walk ins & pick up orders coming in hot lol ! Generally I'll call my order in and pick it up . The food : simple classic breakfast . They have breakfast specials and combos , pancakes & French toast . Salmon croquettes... even fried pork chop or steak and egg for breakfast . MY go to is really simple . Grits extra cheese and sausage . Never have been disappointed with my food here . Fong's use to be the spot. I know they were closed down for a few months. Plus, I heard they were robbed and now the place has tanked. Part of Fong's best feature was being able to chill with a cup of coffee and chop it up with regulars. Now you can't come inside , you can't sit, the staff acts like you're a criminal and everything is at the door takeout. Unfortunately for me nothing about Fong's seems homie or original anymore. As an East Oakland native, this place is a staple location for quick good breakfast eats. *Please note it is CASH ONLY* Although I do not currently live in Oakland, I frequent Fong's if not every trip home at least every other trip home. I typically get grits, eggs, salmon croquettes or french toast. Fong's never disappoints. The wait depends on whether you call in or order in, I have never dined in but I may have to give it a try. You can count on your meals being consistent at this place. In the 20+ years I have been frequenting this establishment, I have never had a bad breakfast -knock on wood-. They also have a Fong's Restaurant on Seminary, but for some reason it isn't quite as good. The location is a bit sketchy and there will probably be someone panhandling outside, but if you're looking for the place to sit and listen to the locals talk about neighborhood happenings you've found it. If you go in the early AM, you can catch the "old man shift" - my favorite. The later it gets, the younger (and louder) the patrons are. I noticed instantly how quaint and homely it felt, but also how intimate, special this small cafe felt in a locale burgeoning with innovation and pushing away the traditional. 2 eggs and chicken apple sausage with hash browns and a chat with Grandma was all I needed to sauce the soul. This place is an essential stop for anyone living in the neighborhood, or anyone who wants great breakfast. Friendly customer service from mostly Chinese folks behind the counter and a diverse clientele, mostly African American and Latino. Both times I've ordered I've been only white person there. Fresh ingredients prepared with care and flavored that are spot on. I had the fried pork chops with grits. Hot damn! So great. Our kids love their French toast. On a prior occasion I had the "everything but the kitchen sink" hash. Awesome. If you ever wonder about racism in Oakland's restaurant scene, just walk into this place and imagine it dropped into Montclair or Piedmont - it'd have thousands of 4-5 star reviews and prices twice as high, but the customers would be mostly white. This place is good fast breakfast food- great as any you'll find in Oakland. We like Montclair Egg Shop but this has become our Go-to take out place on weekends when cooking seems impossible.
