    Potato Dog
    Ray B.

Check out the potato dogs! According to Laura, they are the most delicious potato dogs. The world has ever known. Some people would even say they're better than a hotdog or a hamburger. I personally have never eaten the potato dog, but looking at the pictures I would like to I took 20 pictures. Pictures are awesome. Pictures are sometimes better than food. Sometimes they satisfy your hunger in a way that Food never could is that poetic. I don't know you tell me

Don't when thus place changed hands but as an original Oakland resident I jave to say it's not as I remember it. I understand things change but I can't recommend this place. I walked out of Buttercup Grill after being seated and waiting for 10 minutes to jabe anyone speak to me, so I drove up the block for a simple late breakfast and no other expectations. After choosing a seat I asked for coffee, greapfeuit juice 3 eggs over easy, potatoes, bacon and toast. I didnt gett the coffee, the home fries with burnt onions that came out of the precooked pan was on the plate along with four pieces of bacon. Also on the plate was two pre-cooked croutons called toast. Having to flag down the preoccupied waitrest not tending to four people I asked for "not burnt and dry toast". 5 minuets later I wanted to just pay and leave at another disappointment in sevice.

    Waffle Combo
    Abigail N.

The waffle combo which I ordered was pretty decent! The eggs were cooked how I requested and the waffle sure was a waffle. It didn't do anything spectacular to impress me, but it was tasty as such things go. However, my boyfriend ordered the BLT and he was extremely disappointed. We're not sure how one makes a bad BLT, but they managed. To add insult to injury the fries were then soggy Another peeve of mine occurred. There were six people at our table, three of whom ordered omelettes. The server didn't know what omelette he was brining to the table. Then, the meals came out in waves. Like, three breakfasts were delivered, then we got to wait another 15 minutes before the second three breakfasts were delivered. Because everyone at the table was trying to be polite, the people who were served first waited for the people who still needed their plates. This meant that half the people at the table ate cold breakfasts, which was especially unfortunate for those who got omelettes.

this is the phone number she brought me to "take it up with our insurance if you go to the hospital"

I am so disappointed. I've been coming to the Oakland grill for decades. I always order the crab Benedict. We have since moved across the country and upon arriving back to the bay for a visit, we decided to hit the Oakland Grill for breakfast. This is the first thing I've eaten all day. I felt that the crab tasted a bit off, but my husband tried it and said it tasted okay, so I kept eating. A few minutes later I was throwing up the whole meal in the bathroom. I told our waitress and over 15 minutes went by while she deliberated with her manager about the validity of my complaint. Our waitress came back and said "Our manager says that we just got a new supply in, so there's nothing wrong with the food. Maybe you have an allergy, but here is the number you can call if you go to the hospital and you can file with our insurance--" "Um, okay, but I just threw up the whole meal in your bathroom. Can you rectify the bill to reflect that and take my meal off? It's not really okay that someone gets sick in your restaurant from the food and you come back with 'file a complaint with our insurance'-- we're on a trip back in the Bay, so no I won't be going to the hospital" *mind you, I'm also 6 months pregnant* my face is red, capillaries burst in my eyes from vomiting-- The toilet was full of vomit, I feel like I should've shown it to her, but of course I flushed and wiped things down (after asking for paper towels, because there weren't any) because I'm not disgusting and didn't think I would be met with the rebuttal I got. So she went back to talk to the manager, and came back again and said "She says everything is just free and she wants to know if you need us to call an ambulance" which would have been a kind gesture if it wasn't insulting. The manager was incredibly rude, basically just wanted to shoo us out the door, and did not apologize or seem concerned. The server was very polite. So what the biggest disappointment is, is that the Oakland Grill is ruined for me now. It went from being a favorite place to having the worst customer service experience I've ever had. I've worked in food service-- you simply apologize, comp the entree and move on. But here we are and they've lost a customer. Of course, we still tipped our waitress on the full ticket value and told her we appreciated her going back and forth. We had no problem with paying the bill, but I'm shocked to have been met with a clap-back after they all clearly saw me (and probably heard me) come out from vomiting in the bathroom twice-- red faced, flushed, with capillaries burst around my eyes from the pressure of getting sick. So if you decide to go, don't order the "real crab"

I recently visited this breakfast spot and left feeling underwhelmed. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy yet the service didn't reflect that. I ordered the scramble combo while my boyfriend had the pancake combo. Unfortunately, the sides for his meal didn't arrive until after we had both already finished eating, which really threw off the whole experience. We also weren't really checked in on during our meal, even though we noticed surrounding tables getting attention multiple times. While the food itself was decent--nothing bad, but nothing memorable either--the lack of attentiveness stood out more than the meal. We did bring the issue to the host's attention and to their credit the bill was adjusted accordingly. The staff was friendly overall and the ambiance of the restaurant was fine but nothing special. In the end while it wasn't a terrible experience it's not a place I'd go out of my way to return to.

    New York Scramble

Walked in here with a friend Sunday morning, was expecting a crowd, but thankfully there were a couple empty tables and we were seated right away. Firstly - The gentleman at the casher was the only person that provided us with any service, despite there being other staff members assisting other tables. Secondly - the food was ok. My friend got some kind of omelet and did not even eat half of it, because of their being no real flavor. I got the New York Scramble and I had the same experience no real flavor and pretty small size for what the price is. Overall I appreciate that they had seats available, but the flavor of the food and the prices are not for me. I do not mind paying $$$ but the flavor has to be there or at least the portion size should justify it.

I ordered the Joe Special with spinach, mushrooms, garlic, and onions and it was absolutely delicious. The combination was perfect, and the side of potatoes with sour cream was amazing too. I also loved the fresh pineapple and orange on the side. It's such a nice touch and really enhances the overall taste of the meal. I also ordered French toast and coffee and everything came out great. What really stood out to me was the service. They checked on me every few minutes to make sure I didn't need anything, which made the experience feel welcoming and genuine. This place truly doesn't miss. I left happy and satisfied and will definitely be back.

I'm bumping up this review. This spot is that locals, "greasy" spoon serving up huge portions of brunch. While I haven't tried everything, our most recent visit with kids in tow provided friendly, quick service, large, stick to your bones portions and tasty food. While maybe not "bougie", it was a great spot in an area lacking a ton of options. To note: We arrived about 1:30, 30 minutes or so before closing time, and there was no line, and they quickly served us. A few people came in even closer to closing time and were still seated. My son's kids breakfast at $10 included a mickey mouse pancake, 2 strips of bacon (wish that was crispier) and an egg. He of course ordered a hot chocolate that came with a tower of whipped cream. He was living the good life. My Colorado omelet at $16 was enough for two (and my husband and I did share it). Huge omelet with potatoes and a piece of toast. It was delicious with the only critique: the toast was not the highest quality bread, but all good. (I would have also loved some fruit as pictured in photos, but not this time) The menu has a little something for everyone, the place is a diner style with a bunch of tables, booths and a long counter. I'd like to add, they have huge windows, letting the natural sunlight pour in. It's really cozy. 100% a gem in an area that is losing businesses left and right. This is a staple, it's kid friendly and while I don't do brunch often, I'd recommend this place to anyone needing to cure a hangover, fill up a belly or just enjoy some eating out.

    Joe's Special & Crab Cake Benedict 3/5
    Kyrie S.

My boyfriend decided to take me here since he grew up eating from this restaurant as he raved about it in the car ride there explaining how good it is. As excited I was for him, we were left disappointed in our breakfast. The Joes special was so weird... the eggs lacked so much flavor while the potatoes were SO salty. It didn't balance eachother out because of how bland or salty a bite was. Crab cake benedict was okay. The crab cake itself was mostly dough rather than filling. The potatoes again were super salty. Service was great, kind staff. As my boyfriend sat and ate his meal he was really disappointed and I had to listen in the car ride home about how the quality went down and the food was ok.

    Ashley C.

Service was very fast and I was able to get seated quickly for Weekend brunch. Although the potatoes were softer than I'd prefer, the servings were large and I'd always prefer to leave full than hungry for more! The interior feels very simple and old school. I'd recommend if you're in the area, but nothing was out of the ordinary.

I've came in once or twice before and the food is always good and service is fast. This place is usually very busy and only serves breakfast and lunch. The restaurant itself is very casual and located right in the midst of the produce market in Oakland. After not being here for a while (only because it's a little out of the way for me) I can tell you that the food and service is still constant. A must return spot when in the area.

I love Hole in the wall eateries! Wooden benches give authentic vibes. Food and service was a pleasant surprise. Chicken was well cooked and seasoned as well as breakfast potatoes. The WAFFLE YUM! Mimosas were great! Different flavors to choose from. Will definitely be back!

First time going to Oakland Grill and I must say, everything was beyond my expectations. I called Easter morning to check the wait time, and upon arrival the owners had a booth already waiting for me. I ordered the Colorado Omelette and my boyfriend ordered the Oakland Grill Omelette. We also both shared an order of French toast. The order came out in a timely fashion and everything was very delicious. Both Omelette orders come with country potatoes that were very tasty. My omelette had avocado included and they were beyond generous with the portions. Another thing I would like to mention is that the service was very attentive. You have personnel walking down the isles checking up on you and making sure everything is up to par. The location has plenty of parking so you do not have to worry about where to park. I will be coming back soon.

Do they have gluten free toast or pancakes?

    I wish!

After the new ownership, things certainly changed. Have they gone back to the excellent food and service they were known for?

Probably not. We were die hards for Oakland Grill for many years. This business was sold back then and the new owners actually told me they weren't going to change anything, but we know how that went. One slice in an order of toast, really? I'm sure… Read more

    Do they have bottomless mimosas?

Unfortunately the mimosa are not bottomless.

Do they have weekday bottomless mimosas?

Don't think so but I went on Sunday Morning and it was an option.

Is there another way to go up the stairs, like an elevator? I'll be with my grandparents and a large party. It looks like there's room for a large party upstairs.

Sorry no elevator service but they do have restrooms on the 2nd floor.

    Do they have mimosas here?

    Yes

Can i take my non service dog? Is there outside dog friendly space?

Unfortunately, Oakland Grill does not have any outdoor seating. You should still go check it out though - one of my favorites in Oakland!

Do they have tv's to watch any sports?

    No they don't.

Then, you gotta do everything yourself. Keeping in mind the pricing and you would at least think you wouldn't have to get your own water?? And God forbid you want a separate tab, becasue now your ordering for yourself through a qr code like its doordash, just to find out that the website doesn't work when trying to pay, then they have the audacity to ask for a tip on the website?? Who am I tipping if I did everything myself? Anyways, we ended up just ordering through the waiter. I know that the restaurant is like this rustic millennial burger spot where they do odd stuff but this really threw me off. On top of this, I came with an elderly and when she asked for a water the waiter pretty rudely told her that it was self serving. Maybe this is nitpicking, and maybe we just got a bad apple, but our waiter seemed very unprofessional and spoke to us like we bullied him in high school. Additionally, while ordering, damn near the whole menu was out of stock. You would think that the two dollar charge for every ingredient added on your pizza would pay for some pesto. The menu is already not that big and suddenly it was reduced to only a couple of items. I would maybe understand if we had come later, but it was 4pm. Now for the famous outdoor seating, if you REALLY want to go here, please just eat inside. Yes it was cute, but leaves and seeds were constantly falling into our hair, drinks, and food. Maybe it would've been nicer to have lids on your cups so you weren't literally drinking around Lord-knows-what in your cup. Hopefully the seeds from the trees have protein, because I know I ate some. Finally, about the actual food, I will say that it was pretty good, and it came quickly! However, a burger from in n out or a pizza from blaze pizza is around the same quality for a more reasonable price. As for the pizza, it was pretty good and able to be shared with 2-3 people. Just avoid the "spicy" fries because they are just regular fries drowing in paprika lol. Overall, there are so many other cute spots like this around so just go to one of those.

On top of really slow service there was an older man who sat in the table next to us and kept talking to us looking at our food. He literally was asking me if you support trump do you like him. He kept telling us how he knew the owner and his wife and has come to this place for 100 times over years and everything is free for him here. First of all, my order was TO-GO. And let me tell you... when I got home and opened that bag, I was honestly blown away. My food was packaged with so much care, precision, and pride--it was neat, organized, and handled like it actually mattered. That alone told me everything about the level of service in that building. Candalen--YOU DID THAT. The attention to detail on my plate did not go unnoticed. You treated my food like it was being served in-house, and that speaks volumes about your work ethic and pride in what you do. Aaron--listen... that peach lemon drop??? BABY. That was my first time trying one and it was EVERYTHING. Smooth, flavorful, perfectly balanced--you made that drink an experience all by itself. I will be back JUST for that. And let's talk about the vibe--the music, the energy, the atmosphere--it all came together in a way that made the entire visit feel GOOD. Not just food... a whole experience. But what really stands out is this: It has been a LONG time since I've experienced service this genuine, this intentional, and this excellent. Not rushed, not careless--EXCEPTIONAL. Management, if you are reading this--please understand--you have some powerful people on your team. Candalen and Aaron are the kind of employees that elevate a brand. They are the reason people come back. They are the reason I will be telling others. This wasn't just a good experience. This was the kind of experience that turns customers into loyal supporters. Finally, we were so excited to see it was open on a Saturday an we came in for lunch. To order you need to scan the QR code and pay plus tip before a single person spoke to us or offered us help. From the menu we saw they were out of beef ribs, smoked chicken, rib tips, no peach cobbler, no banana pudding and no kool aid. I come for their brisket and my friend loves ribs so we went ahead and ordered combo plates to share. Mine was the brisket with a side of collard greens, she had the pork ribs, a hotlink with a side of Mac-n-cheese, & cornbread. For drinks we had lemonade and an Arnold Palmer. I'm not sure what has happened over the last few months but the quality of the food, the service and the expectation to pay and tip up front were very disappointing. The greens, Mac cheese, brisket and ribs were cold. The hotlink wasn't BBQ'ed it was pan fried. Everything tasted like warmed up leftovers and we will not return. For 2 of us to eat it came to $100 and we were not satisfied. The dining room is an attractive space, it was completely empty. The staff was unclear about what we ordered, had to be told to bring our drinks, bartender is also working as server and apologized for his uncertainty. I suggest this restaurant hire and train more staff if they intend to keep their doors open.

While this visit was in between the lunch and dinner rush, unfortunately I think they are understaffed because at the time we sat down there was only 1 person who was busing tables and taking orders. As a result, it took a while for them to be able to stop by our table and provide water, take our order, etc. There was quite a long wait between sitting down to ordering to actually receiving our food. By the time we had actually received our food, almost an hour had passed. While we were waiting, a few other servers eventually joined, but service was still pretty bare for us and we never received refills on water or plates to eat off of when we received our food. I understand that staffing and a backup in the kitchen are out of the staff's control, but it would've definitely helped for us to know in advance how long to expect to wait to align our expectations and arrange our plans for the day. Would advise giving customers a quick heads up/warning because that on its own would've made a big difference. As for the actual food, we ordered the mac trio with elote mac, chicken pot pie mac, and kogi short rib mac (for an extra fee). The elote mac was the best and most flavorful, the short rib mac was okay but not amazing or worth the extra money, and the chicken pot pie mac was very bland/flavorless and didn't have much chicken in it. The food didn't feel like it warranted the wait time and because of that I would not return.

My only question is....WHY haven't I been here sooner?! I…read morewas craving pastrami, so I looked on yelp for pastrami in the area. My mom and I came in around 2pm on Monday (8/11). It's a cute delicatessen/restaurant. You order at the counter and they bring your food to you. Immediately the staff was so friendly and welcoming. The woman at the register was very nice and asked if we had any questions. My mom and I shared a pastrami sandwich, Brussels sprouts, fries, and slaw. It was reasonably priced for the Bay Area. When they brought the food to the table I was shocked. Everything looked amazing and very appetizing, and the portions were much bigger than expected. Before she brought the sandwich over, she asked if we were sharing it and was so nice to split it into 2 plates for us. That was very kind for her to do. Let's start with the French fries. Omg they were perfectly crisp but still fluffy on the inside. They had so much flavor probably because of the beef tallow and had just the right amount of salt on them. There was a side of mayonnaise with the fries, and it tasted homemade. I meant to ask them if it was. It was very good lol I couldn't get enough. The poppyseed slaw was very refreshing and it was tangy and sweet. We loved that the cabbage remained crispy and it was great for a warm day. The fried Brussels sprouts were full of flavor. They were a nice balance of sweet and salty. I loved the bacon on them. The hot pastrami sandwich definitely satisfied my pastrami craving! There was just the right ratio of meat-cheese-sauerkraut-mustard-dressing. The bread tasted freshly baked as well. It was full of flavor. And the side salad that came with the sandwich was excellent. We loved the tanginess of the dressing. We were shocked that there wasn't more people inside, but also for 2pm on a Monday, it probably was just an off hour. We had so many leftovers as we both don't eat very much, but lol as soon as I got home I started eating some more of the slaw and salad. Can't wait to eat the rest for lunch tomorrow. We are already planning on coming back to try the meatballs next time and definitely trying their Indian cuisine! I'll have to bring my husband here next. Thank you guys for an amazing lunch!

I'm sure there are other good things here but I keep just getting the cheese steak. The picture…read moredoesn't do it justice. It's a warm, crunchy roll, the chopped steak and cheese are perfect, and there's a salad next to it so you can take a bite of that while you're waiting for the next bit of your sandwich to cool down. Do yourself a favor and order this in instead of carrying it out. The roll is warm and crunchy and I think too much time in a bag would make everything less delicious. (I'm sure it's still good, it's just *better* if you can eat it when it's fresh.) I swear one of these days I'll try something else on the menu.

WHEN: Thur @4pm I…read morewanted to come here at opening time for a few reasons: - PARKING: It's downtown so not sure how parking would be. But lucky for us, we found free parking just around the corner! When we left around 5pm, more opened up! I'm guessing it's because the auto repair shop was closing. - THE CROWD: This place is popular and there is usually a line. Though they have a great amount of seatings available (outdoors), but I prefer a space I don't feel like I have to menu ear so much around. - THE FISHWICH THAT SELLS OUT: I was told about this special fried fish sandwich that sells out. So in order to guarantee there will be one for me to order, gotta get there early! It's my first time, and here's what I had: THE FISHWICH - $14.50 Panko crusted rockfish, American cheese, Pickle, Shredded Cabbage, Tartar, Potato Bun. This is a limited supply item that is only available Wed-Sat until sellout. A friend shared it was amazing, but sadly I couldn't agree from one reason: This was bland. I love the softness of the potato bun, the crispy and hot pink-crusted textures, and the generous amount of tartar sauce. But I tasted nothing--just all sorts of texture. I owned up top it though and finished the entire thing. Was I satisfied? No, but my belly is full! THE DRIVE THRU - $10.50 American cheese, Schmalz onion, Pickle, Lettuce, tomato, Special Sauce, Sesame Bun. Overall decent burger, and I enjoyed it. Really can't say more without comparing it to SCOLARI'S but it's a solid burger. HAND CUT FRENCH FRIES - $5.35 Blanched and Fried chipperbec potatoes. I think I enjoyed these fries because they remind me of SCOLARI'S friends, heh. I was surprised I did not see o any of their merch for sale because I'm digging that carton character icon! The brewery it shared a space with has a decent amount of merch though!

Quality/Quantity - We almost did NOT come today. After circling for parking 3+ times, I told the…read morefamily if we don't find a space this last drive by, we will go to a different place for dinner and a different brewery! Got lucky and parked two blocks away. Lovely's restaurant is also here on the Two Pitchers Brewing premises. See pictures and other 5 star Yelp review. The food was amazing! I was worried when I first saw what my daughter and wife ordered as that was not my wife's usual type of food.. Corn Fritters - My order. The oil they fried this in was dark; I was worried that the oil was old...? But it tasted fresh and good. I would get this again, but prefer a lighter oil next time please. The Chili Willie - My wife's order?!?! And this was good. The jalapenos gave it the perfect kick. I told my wife I am here for the beer, and as light eaters I just wanted to share something with them. Classic Fried Chicken Sandwich - No surprise my daughter's order. Well she wanted your sold out Fish & Chips (which is weird because I think she ate that last night also...?). This was also made-to-order fresh! The chicken had a good crisp until the last bite and was moist inside! Fried perfectly. She also ordered Chili Cheese Fries with that; I guess that is the theme today. Lastly, the soft serve looked so good but too bad it would clash with my beer drinking, lol. To compliment my dinner, or the other way around, lol. Two Pitchers Brewing: 10 of their beers are on tap and the rest are guests' taps. So of course, I had to try their $3 Signature Lager which was too light for me. You basically get what you pay for. Next... Pale Ale - $7, now that's more like it! No IPA today, so I had to settle. My daughter got the Yard Bird, Strawberry Lemonade Beer; it suited her. Ready for my 3rd beer, when my daughter said she wanted to go home and party some more?!?! So I abided. Ambiance - Cool space. Lots of semi private spaces that you can rent. See pictures or their website. Very kid and dog friendly! Unisex restrooms with outside sinks, thank you! NO parking! So bad on a Saturday evening, that we almost did not come. Open 6 days a week. See pictures or their website. Closed on Mondays. Service - Counters service. For both Lovely's and the bar. The outdoor bar is WAY faster service than the inside bar, just an FYI. Same team, but more organized. Price - $49 + generous tip. Including a 3% operations fee/credit card fee, see the small print on the very bottom of the menu. Expensive, even for the Bay Area. But that is the price for quality. 20% gratuity for orders over $250. Owner Comment - Congrats to the building since 1919. Congrats on your success since 2021. Glad we were able to visit. Are you the same owners as Two Pitchers Brewing?

Inside there's the actual bar area that's low lit and more intimate and a bigger seating area with huge TV screens. Cocktails were good. We went with the Spicy Lil Burro which was a spicy margarita with honey and lime. The Nikkei Margarita which was a tamarind margarita was also solid. Started with the Brussels Sprouts which had the perfect glaze and the almonds added an extra crunch to them. The Fish-N-Chips were fresh and perfectly battered. Fries golden crispy. The Yard Birds was the winner of the night. Succulent and juicy inside but crunchy on the outside. Great portion of chicken. The biscuit was fluffy and paired well with the hot honey and chicken. The Mac salad was okay. It had a little flavor out of the ordinary that didn't taste great. Service was good and attentive. Parking can be difficult and limited as they share a parking lot with a cannabis shop and the security is strict. There is some street parking around

The inside has a nice modern look and there is a lounge to the side open for happy hour. We sat in there which has its own bar. It is very cozy. My husband ordered a Caesar salad and I ordered the French Onion soup with a bacon grilled cheese. Our waiter started off well but when he came to get our orders he didn't write anything down and I had to repeat myself twice. The first time he was facing my husband, the second he came to my side and I pointed at the menu while slowly repeating my order. I simply wanted a grilled cheese with bacon added no avocado as it is advertised as an add on, on the menu. As he walked away a part of me knew my order was going to be messed up. Low and behold my soup arrives with a side of bacon. I then explained again what I ordered. A few moments pass and he comes back and then my husband explains what I wanted. I'm not sure if it was a language barrier but it just didn't seem to register. I truly did not think asking for soup & bacon grilled cheese would be so difficult. By this time my husband had already received his salad which was delicious. Finally, he comes back with my soup, a grilled cheese and the bacon ON THE SIDE. If I ordered a bacon grilled cheese why would you give me like this? Why not make my grilled cheese and add the bacon inside? To make matters worse the French onion soup was so bland not even salt could save it. It tasted like a nothingness broth. The grilled cheese was better once I made it myself. The waiter never came back to check on us. The manager hovered by for a while but we had to even flag him down for the check. I left hungry and got a meal at the airport. Would not recommend. If you can't remember an order as a waiter please just write it down.
