Love the pizza. But just recently tried to order 4 pizzas for my office. Tried to call the 4th street store 5 times and no answer. Phone number says it is not valid.. then tried to order online and could process!!!!!! I had to go to Ankeny location and they indicated they heard there was trouble with communication there. The crust of the pizza is literally a baked pita chip topped with flavor less ingredients, besides the overload of dressing. We wanted to check out the fusion of pizza and asian cuisine. Unfortunately, the fryer was down, so we couldn't try the chinese cheesesticks. But we did get a few pizzas - Mac and Cheese, Crab Rangoon, and Orange Chicken. All of them were very good. I liked the Crab Rangoon the best, although the Orange Chicken was a close second. The Orange Chicken was a little dry for me, but was still tasty. We also got a side salad, which was just ok. But you don't come to Fong's pizza for a side salad. We visited Fong's on 22 Oct. Everything was fine, except I wouldn't recommend the Ramen Pizza, as it was soggy and had little taste. The main problem is when it was time to pay. Our server brought us our ticket and I handed her cash for payment. She didn't know how to figure out the change, but she told me they rounded up on the bill, so there would be no change returned. I then asked if she meant to say they rounded down,but she said no, they rounded up. So...unless you don't mind being short changed or basically stolen from, pay with credit card or exact change. I love this place! I tried eating here a couple weeks ago, but couldn't find any place to park. Came back today, and was able to find on street parking! Had I have known then what I know now, I would have gladly paid for parking. The menu is funky is funky, fresh, and has plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options. There selections of brews looked good too. I debated over a couple standard type pizzas, then asked my server for guidance. I ordered the Fongolian Beef pizza. Delicious! The toppings were very much like Mongolian beef and served on a crisp, tasty thin crust. The crust was amazing and really complimented the toppings. Service was great! Ok, I was a little hesitant on going to a Chinese-Italian pizza place but this restaurant opened my eyes to a wonderful new fusion. We ordered the General Tsos Chicken Pizza and the Mac and Cheese Pizza. So to start, my coworker recommended this place to me since she is from the area but she, admittedly, is not a huge spice person. So out of all of their pizzas, she highly recommended the Mac and Cheese pizza and she did not let me down. Unlike other mac and cheese pizzas I've tried, this one has a real thin and crisp crust. The crust basically was just a way to transport their perfectly creamy and cheesy mac and cheese into my mouth. This is these best mac and cheese pizza I've ever experienced and would definitely order it again! The General Tsos Chicken Pizza was my choice purely because that is the dish I typically order from most Chinese restaurants. This pizza was AMAZING! It was such an odd combination of Asian chicken and Italian pizza but it worked so well together. This pizza honestly made me sad that I wouldn't be in town long enough to try all of the other pizzas listed in the Asian pizza section of their menu.... Stopped on a Friday at the Forest location at about 2pm and they were out of slices of pizza so I called the 4th St location and they said they had a few slices left. They stop selling slices at 2. When I arrived I told her I was there for some slices of pizza and was pleasantly surprised they gave me all of the slices they had left for FREE! Literally planned a trip to Des Moines to come here! I never got to Des Moines much growing up if at all. My girlfriend was there a lot with family in Iowa. She would NOT stop raving about the Crab Rangoon Pizza...so we planned a weekend getaway for pizza. Having been there its fun trying to explain the place to others. Its a pizza place, with a Chinese food place name, and they have a tiki bar. Oh...and you can do Kamakaze shots while you wear a Chinese fighter pilot helmet! (must do for the mandatory photo opp!) The drinks and the food were worth the trip and we're already planning another trip back with some friends. The place is usually busy so don't plan on being in and out fast. Enjoy a drink or two at the bar and plan ahead. They do a good job of flipping tables so you won't wait too long. read more

The crab rangoon pizza is a must when you go, and the tiki drinks are excellent. The staff were all friendly and quick to help in any way they could, and did a great job providing a fun environment. I recommend the crab rangoon pizza (along with everyone else on this site). It's a classic and a staple. They have some other funky options such as: mac n cheese (OK), honey and garlic (amazing) and loaded potato (it sounds like it would be good) If you're feeling some drinks, get the kamikaze shot (complete with helmet) or some local beer. Attended Iowa for a business meeting and the locals raved about this place. I was very hesitant about eating at a pizza joint called FONGS. Once you get their the name makes since. It looks like a Chinese food joint that failed and the owners decided to bring the far East to Iowa with an Italian flair of pizza pies. We orders the meatzilla which consist of 3 meats and I would rate it 4 stars. Crab Rangoon was a big hit and I would definitely give it 5 stars. Loaded potatoes was 4 stars. To make the Midwestern stay more exciting, DL & I entered into a funky fusion, divey-feelin' resto with a primary purpose of eating for the fun of it on an early weekday dinner. From the entrance & beyond random pictures & knick knacks, like bumper stickers and the Waving Kittens, scatter around the bar area, the booths, and the front window. I knew of this place based on local talks and photo-gawking on pizzas with ingredients uncommonly utilized on fusion pizzas that CPK can't really beat. The pizza that caught our attention the most, months before we finally entered and devoured, was called the Crab Rangoon Pizza--nope, I'm not the one messing around with words this time =P. We decided, with our waitress' second-hand approval, to have the CRP on white, thin crust ($11.99 for 10") cut in 6 slices. To balance both the ingredient intake throughout and curiosity factor, we ordered a veggie-filled Shroomin pizza on wheat, hand-tossed thick dough ($10.99 for 10"). First I'll note about our quick vegetarian feat. Let's just say that our curiosity & nutrient consumption were surely satisfying, realizing that the portabella, mushrooms, spinach, onion, and roasted pepper gave a decent oomph with very mild mozzi cheese & a subtle tang from their "delicious [pinkish] sauce." Their hand-tossed dough, however, was a bit too stiff, but it was something expected due to ordering it on wheat. The one with the unusual toppings, on the other hand, was--well--unexpectedly & surprisingly delicious! The thin crust excellently supported the sweet & creamy Rangoon topped with imitation crab, green onion, mellow mozzi & asiago cheese, crunchy egg roll/won ton chips, and impressively sweet chili sauce. It was so weirdly addictive we really annihilated the whole 10 incher (I ate 1/2, so did he), only leaving off 2 slices of the Shroomin for our breakfast leftover. I loved the brilliant spread of the ingredients that I'll choose this over the regular Crab Rangoon any day. In addition, I honestly wouldn't mind spendin' maybe $2.50 more if they replace the imitator with the real shreds. So if you're travelling to Des Moines, business or pleasure-wise, I think you should schedule about 2 hours of your time to give Fong's a fun try. I was additionally surprised for service to be inviting, the crowd volume to increase when it wasn't peak hours yet, and Fong's closing time of 2am. The only caveat I encountered was the women's one-stalled restroom, where I was much more bothered with the strange cigarette smoke than the setup itself. 3.5 stars obviously rounded up with my tease of the CRP slice, plus other Chinese pizzas like Moo Shu Pork and Kung Pao. read more

Ah Fong's! Not sure how I can describe this place but I will try my best! First off its most certainly interesting. Not only from the food and pizza standpoint but also the staff. I will be honest, love them both! Staff are super nice, BUT most importantly relaxed. Juuuust go with the flow, why the stress or pressure, you're here to enjoy. Moving on to the more important piece, the pizzas! Wow, talk about delicious oddities!! It was $20. Wow. It was thin, very thin. It's pretty much crust, cream cheese and fried wonton. you can get 2 pizzas from Casey's for $20. I repeat: there's NO MEAT on the pizza. i think if you order an alcoholic drink from 2 to 6 Monday to Friday, you get a slice of pizza. I wish the waitress would tell us, without being asked about it. The Ankeny location is going to be open on May 8th, just in case you're wondering.
